Art Paper and Paper Art

Yes it is only a sheet of paper. But Peter Callesen saw the possibilities
to make a wonderful art out of it.

Lately I have worked almost exclusively with white paper in different objects, paper cuts, installations and performances. A large part of my work is made from A4 sheets of paper. It is probably the most common and consumed media used for carrying information today. This is why we rarely notice the actual materiality of the A4 paper. By taking away all the information and starting from scratch using the blank white A4 paper sheet for my creations, I feel I have found a material that we are all able to relate to, and at the same time the A4 paper sheet is neutral and open to fill with different meaning. The thin white paper gives the paper sculptures a frailty that underlines the tragic and romantic theme of my works.

The paper cut sculptures explore the probable and magical transformation of the flat sheet of paper into figures that expand into the space surrounding them. The negative and absent 2 dimensional space left by the cut, points out the contrast to the 3 dimensional reality it creates, even though the figures still stick to their origin without the possibility of escaping. In that sense there is also an aspect of something tragic in many of the cuts.

Recently I have worked with the notion of complexity in the piece ‘White Diary’. It presents a human head with a sketchbook in the centre. Out from the pages of the book grows a complex thought-process as an imaginative landscape filled with details and fairytale stories. This maze mapping of the brain shows at the same time confusion and a feeling of getting lost in the detail, which in turn disables any rational overview for a while. Not until the sculpture is seen at a distance and its entirety drawn in can you create order in the chaos.

Some of the paper works are coloured and framed. Others are larger installations such as one to one copies of stairs and ladders made out of thin white paper. These works derive from earlier pieces such as ‘Bridge’ and ‘Still Life’. They deal with dreams and the impossible. But the stairs and ladders represent a more fragile and almost sublime form. The trashy style in earlier works has developed into a more precise aesthetics. These works exist in the gap between the recognizable everyday object and the fragile and spherical condition and material in which they appear. The whiteness, the ideal pure copy of something real as well as the vertical direction coherent in most of my paper works, could also indicate the aspect of something platonic or religious.

Another returning theme in my work is the reinterpretation of classical fairytales associated with a more general interest in memory in connection to childhood. This theme is also present in ‘Crossing’, ‘Castle’, and ‘Jukebox’ which are examples of playful performances that exist in the lost land of childhood - between dream and reality. It is in this meeting or confrontation of these two conditions, in a kind of utopian embodiment, that these works become alive, often in a tragicomic way.

A continual figure in my earlier performances and later drawings is ‘The Dying Swan’, who can be described as a hybrid between ‘The Ugly Duckling’ and a human figure. ‘The Dying Swan’ reveals different layers of identity, and often he strives at being somebody or somewhere else or tries to achieve the impossible. He is, however, always confronted with reality and failure. In his interaction and power play with the audience his physical presence often creates an intense and uncomfortable atmosphere. In the drawings ‘The Dying Swan’ creates his own universe, where he seems to be trapped in impossible situations and circles, dealing with death, rebirth, self-creation, and self-destruction.

Imagine the world without Filipinos. It's probably a bit different. No, come on, examine and really imagine what it's like for a world to exist without us balut-eating species. For sure it would be a surprise for you and you'll realize that it's completely different.

If there were no Pinoys, the Karaoke that was invented by Roberto del Rosario, will not exist. On a more serious note, if Fe del Mundo wasn't born, studies that contributed to the invention of the incubator would not have surfaced. Millions and millions of babies would have had difficulty fighting for their lives if not for that piece of equipment.

More examples? Simple lang! Kung walang Pinoy, walang fishballs, walang jeep, walang Manny Pacquiao, maraming wala. Pati ikaw, wala rin.

Anywhere you go, there's a Filipino that is making the world go round in his own little way. Sadly, the usual case is, many Filipinos have little faith in themselves. More often than not, many Pinoys aspire to be someone else they are not.

Grass may seem greener on the other side, but really, it is time to change that way of thinking. We have to start looking at ourselves to finally realize that this nation, with its culture and identity, is filled with so many things to be truly proud of and to be happy with. This is what “Yabang Pinoy” is all about.

A bunch of young, active and nationalistic Filipinos realized that one of the gravest problems faced by the Philippines today is Filipinos not believing in their nationality and doubting their identity. Thus, the “Yabang Pinoy” campaign was born.

This advocacy aims to raise awareness and heighten Filipino people's ethos, dignity and pride by making a statement through the use of a piece of braided abaca band. The abaca band, crafted by underprivileged communities and made from the strongest natural fiber that is unique to the Philippines, aims to constantly remind Filipinos that we are tough, resilient, and exceptional. .

If you have been looking for a way to constantly remind the Filipino people to take pride of their nationality and to unite the Filipino people in believing in themselves and in fellow Filipinos— this is a way!

We might wake up one day confused with our identity, or are we already? Let's all join hands and unite before it's too late. Or better yet, wear that band and be proud. Michael Phelps set an Olympic record in the preliminary heats of the men's 400-meter individual medley. He followed that up in the final by winning the gold medal, as well as breaking his previous world record by nearly two seconds.

Phelps swam the first leg of the men's 4x100m freestyle relay in a time of 47.51 seconds (an American record for the 100 m freestyle), and won his second gold medal of the 2008 Olympics, as well as setting his second world record of the Olympics (3:08.24). Teammate Jason Lezak finished ahead of the silver medalists French team by eight hundredths of a second. The top five teams in the final finished ahead of the world record of 3:12.23 set the day before by the American B team in a preliminary heat.

For his third race, Phelps broke his previous World Record in the 200-meter freestyle by nearly a second and won his third gold medal. He also set his third world record at the Olympics, 1:42.96, winning by nearly two seconds over silver medalist Park Tae-hwan. Phelps became only the fifth Olympic athlete in history to win nine career gold medals, along with Mark Spitz, Larissa Latynina, Paavo Nurmi, and Carl Lewis.

The next day, Phelps would have two finals. In his first event, the 200-meter butterfly, Phelps made it four events, four gold medals and four world records by swimming the final in 1:52.03, defeating silver medalist Laszlo Cseh by almost seven-tenths of a second despite his goggles filling with water and being unable to "see anything for the last 100 [meters]." This fourth gold medal was his 10th, and made him the all-time leader for most Olympic gold medals won by an individual.

Less than one hour after his gold medal victory in the 200-meter butterfly, Phelps swam the lead-off leg of the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay. He won his fifth gold and set his fifth world record as the American team finished first with a time of 6:58.56. 10 Days before his birthday Isaac Hayes found by his wife dead on the floor near the treadmill. Isaac Lee Hayes, Jr was an American soul and funk singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, arranger, composer, and actor.

Who is Isaac Hayes?

Hayes was one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records, where he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s. In the late 1960s, Hayes became a recording artist, and recorded successful soul albums such as Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971) as the Stax label's premier artist.

Alongside his work in popular music, Hayes was a film score composer for motion pictures. His best known work, for the 1971 blaxploitation film Shaft, earned Hayes an Academy Award for Best Original Song (the first Academy Award received by an African-American in a non-acting category) and two Grammy Awards. He received a third Grammy for the album Black Moses.

In 1992, in recognition of his humanitarian work, he was crowned an honorary king of Ghana's Ada district. From 1997 to 2006, he provided the voice for the character "Chef" on the Comedy Central animated TV series South Park.

Hayes was found unconscious in his home located just east of Memphis, Tennessee on August 10, 2008 as reported by the Shelby County, Tennessee Sheriff's Department. A Shelby County Sheriff's deputy responded to Hayes' home after his wife found him on the floor near a still-running treadmill. Hayes was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, where he was pronounced dead at 2:08pm. - wikipedia
