The Believing Heart of a Child

Believing as a child believes is essential...

You tell them something--they believe you...

What must we do? Go to Christ as your children, and my children come to us.

Seeking words, wisdom, attention, love...fellowship...a Relationship.

Without communication--there is no relationship.

We are discussing problems of lack of communication in our Young Adult class on Wednesday nights. Communication is one key ingredient to a good marriage. Good communication.

If you want THE relationship with God that He desires to have with you--you must first open your heart and your mouth. Share your heart with Him...holding nothing back...

Who could resist the look of the expressive face turned upward in devotion?

No one.

When you devote your heart and life to Christ Jesus--you will then begin to fully realize how His devotion saved YOUR soul.

Givers and Takers—Movers and Shakers

Matthew 25:31-46 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on His right and the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

For I was hungry
and you gave Me something to eat;
I was thirsty
and you gave Me something to drink;
I was a stranger and you took Me in;
I was naked and you clothed Me;
I was sick and you took care of Me;
I was in prison and you visited Me.’

“Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or without clothes and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and visit You?’

I know which side I want to stand on. But to be found standing on that side, we must be found “doing” –or LIVING—working with all that we have for Jesus. If we focus only on the “task”…and not Him, then it becomes our god…HE alone is to be worshipped.

· When we get caught up in the details we lose sight of what we are here for…not for us…but for HIM…and others.

V 35: For I was hungry…

What is the world hungry for? Let’s roll back the clock to a year in your teens…what were you hungry for?

Most of us could and would answer—attention.

To be noticed—

to matter.

To be valued.

Too often we discover all around us are people who struggle living daily—feeling that they have no value—they are starving to death for someone to share a piece of life with them. Most of the time—they want more than a smile. They need an ear—a shoulder.

Sunday afternoon—I was sitting on my porch—the birds chirping—the ceiling fan stirred the warm air—and I hear the rustling of leaves.

Scurry—stop. Scurry—stop.

I hear it…but I don’t see it.

I don’t get up. I continue doing what I set out to do…

That’s what we do. Day after day—we hear them.

The people.

We even sometimes smell them. We know they’re there.

Some of the time we even may acknowledge them—but there are days when they are a bother.

Their noise and needs and even existence seem to interrupt whatever nice flow of life we have.

I had gone out to my porch to soak up HIM. I wanted to be alone with Him. My head leaned back on the padding of my chair—and all of a sudden—HIS creation interrupts my quiet. ……………My private world…

They are hungry…

They thirst…

They have questions…

We have answers…yet we are so tucked inside our world…with a nice “do not disturb” sign on the door of our hearts and minds—refusing to answer.

We may not wear a visible sign, but the very fact that we “look away”—tells the tale.

We know in our hearts—although—to admit it to another—we would never do…

but God knows. He’s not deaf, nor is He blind.

They have needs—just as we do—and what if the one He sent to be the ear or shoulder—passed them by as a nuisance….a bother.

Refusing to hear…

Refusing to help…

Yet there are those individuals who look for opportunities to help. Who don’t mind the interruption to their day…thinking that possibly here is a chance to serve God by serving another. Here is a chance to love God by loving another…here is a chance to feed God…by feeding another….VISIT with God---by visiting another.

I cannot presume to label you—sheep from goats…although, the label is clear to His eyes…but just as quick as you can change your mind—you can change your label—with the HELP of God. God knows who and what each of us are—HE knows the hidden places of our hearts…and whatever we are today…HE can change tomorrow…If you’re a taker---He can help you become a giver…

If I were to pen this same passage today—this is what it might say:

“All the nations—every tribe and tongue—man-woman-teenager—boy or girl will be gathered before Him and HE will separate them one from another. Just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

He will put the givers on His right…and the takers on His left…Then the King will say to those on His right, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father-inherit the Kingdom—which was prepared for you from the very beginning of the world…

…For I was a runaway teenager,

Lost in my own world of “self”

Without clothes or food—and no one to help.

Yet you fed me plenty and clothed me clean,

Loved me without judgment—treated me like a queen.

I was the mother of the runaway teenager…

On no shoulder could I cry,

When that same teenager still full of strife,

Turned up months later—

Yet now carrying life.

You pulled me to you and let me cry….

Then wiped my tears until they dried.

I was the sister—who had nothing to drink—

Parched from life of sin on the brink.

My heart bore the scars of neglect and abuse—

With calluses of a lifetime and feelings of no use.

You opened your heart and your home so free

You poured me a drink—Living Water it was, all for me.

My sin took me far—stripped me bare—dumped me out

Yet in my cell you reached in—because you had no doubt

That the One who died for you…did the same for me

And because of your love…today I am free.

Then the righteous will answer Him, Lord, when did we see you as a runaway, as one of pain, starving, homeless and hopeless? When did we clothe you or visit you in prison’s chains…

And the king will answer; whatever you did for one of my beloved daughters…you did for me.”

Picture with me two scenes:

1) A 14 year old girl, sweaty and fearful. Tears streaming as pain after pain grips her young body. Her mother nearby, her father perhaps waiting outside—head hanging—there’s no one to call. Her body tenses as each pain tears at her for release, when finally a small life struggles out—to be held and gazed upon by those who are not sure they can handle this red, wrinkled life. Tears flood the older mother’s eyes as she sees with clarity all that her young daughter, now a mother will have to give up. Years of teenage antics and fun have just been replaced by wee morning hour feedings, burp cloths and dirty diapers. The older mother wears guilt like a cape, heavy and scratchy like rough wool around her drooping shoulders. Who will help?

2) A young couple in the next room, hands clasp tight as the final push brings forth new life. A wriggling, screaming baby emerges into a world of lights. Excitement and tears of joy rush the room—as they snap pictures of her exquisitely fluid arrival taking place. The calls begin to go out and come in, announcing with great delight—the Joy that was born today.

Both births took place…on the same day—somewhere in USA. One full of joy—one less than the ideal situation…One needed help… the other…most likely had more help than they knew what to do with.

What do we do? There are those in our cities, in our communities, neighborhoods and even churches…in need.

Hurting. Hungry. Hopeless. What can we do for them?

Here are just a few things we can do:

1) Pray for them. They need to KNOW someone is praying—and they need to know you care.

2) Give. Of your time, your money or other resources and your love.

a. Maybe you can sew. Sew baby blankets. Sew burp cloths. Wrap them up in pretty packages and give them to your local Pregnancy Crisis Center—or health department that works in the school system with the pregnant teens. Or give towel/wash cloth soap sets to your local homeless shelter.

b. Maybe you are gifted in having a “listening ear”. They need counselors in crisis centers and homeless shelters—those who they will screen and feel qualified to be there for them. People need to know other people care.

3) Think of creative ways to bless them. “Diaper month.” “Bib and Blanket” month. For homeless shelters, think beyond that—soap, hand sanitizers, toilet tissue, tooth brushes and toothpaste, combs, hairbrush, the list can go on and on…WHAT ABOUT BIBLES? What if you placed some Bibles in every shelter—they don’t have to be expensive— give them hope of life…LIFE.

Every donation makes a difference.

4) Get involved. That’s the biggest thing. Maybe you don’t have an area you feel particularly gifted in…

show up…show interest…show CHRIST.

What would HE do?

He would be a “giver”…a mover and shaker…

In A Hurry?

In a hurry to meet us, little Stephanie from Honduras, grabbed one wrong flip-flop.

I know that because the next day, she had on one of the same ones, and it’s mate.

This brought a question to my heart. Are we in that big of a rush to meet with Jesus?

So hurried that we scramble each morning, hoping not to miss an opportunity to show Him how much we love Him?

Probably not—for most of us. I know I like things orderly. Timely. Even though I have found I work best under pressure—I like to take my time, plan things out—cross all the “t’s” and dot all the “i’s”. Sometimes I even get distracted on my way to meet with Him in my morning devotion. I spy some laundry in front of the machine, decide now is a good time to put on a load to wash—you know—while I read and pray.

Then, my feet feel the grainy remnants of yesterday on the floor. I grab the broom.
And as I step on the sidetracks of the morning, I remind myself of my purpose.

Spend time with Jesus. Meet with Him. Go to Him. First. While the day is yet fresh—without the beads of perspiration.

One of many things I have taken away from our Mission Trip to Honduras is the way the children ran to meet us every single morning.

Who knows how long they waited at the top of the hill. (Sidenote: There is One waiting for you today....at the top of whatever hill you are trying to climb...ask for help...)

While in Honduras, my roommate, Marcella and I rose very early every morning in anticipation of what the day would bring. Knowing we needed to tuck into our hearts every single fragment of the day—tie it securely and never forget what God has done—where He brought us from—and where the journey would lead us all—as we take His hand and grip it fiercely.

All the way home.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place. And He was praying there.” Mark 1:35 NIV

We don’t have much more of the journey ahead. Meet with Jesus in the quiet place.

The early place.

Give Him your day—before it takes over your mind….let Him have it all.

There have been many times—my quiet time was when the house was still again—after the ravages of the day had taken it’s toll--that was when He refreshed my soul, refueled my mind—and it was needed. So necessary.

Whatever your time—wherever or however it takes place—meet with Him.

Not much time left....

Go Ahead….arrest me!

After watching this brief video clip--the southern mama in me rose up...and I said..."tear her fanny up!"

Okay, don’t write me any “hate mail”…but really. Can you see yourself there? Not the dad—filming the ridiculous display of what many of our children are “daily” doing to parents…but do you see yourself as the whiney child on the floor? Uhmm…what would your mother or dad have done? If you answered “tear her fanny up”…you are from my generation….if you answered, “put her in time out and take away her “blankey”…uhmmm, I’m not sure where you are from, but seriously, I don’t want to be around your kids.

As I watched this “precious ~~brat~~ child” on the floor (sorry that slipped out) I thought of how often we react to God when He asks us to do the “simplest” things…really. You don’t believe me? Press the rewind button on your last episode with God’s voice in your ear/heart and check again.

That’s what I thought. A definite whine. “But I can’t do that….I don’t know how….what if they laugh at me….what if they don’t listen….what if….”

It’s a whine. No matter how you word it…sweeten it…it’s still a whine.

I know. I’ve done it.

I think today should be –“remove the thumb from your mouth and stop whining day”. (Yes, even my grandson, Zack! DO IT ZACK!)

Okay. Sorry. This was a very non-spiritual sounding post

…but she started it…..

Oh and to clarify, MSN news article had stated in their title that she “avoided” chores…she didn’t. She just made the headlines…. and probably over 1,000 Americans will watch this today-tonight and have varying opinions. One observed she was in her pajamas…and that it should be “expected” for her to act this way when tired….Whatever.

Okay…so NOT spiritual. Sorry y’all. It won’t happen again.

Complacent?

That’s a word that’s been on my lips a few times today…especially in thinking of how some are towards growth…seeking God for more…and especially in living outside of the walls we’ve secured around our lives. Complacent.

I was one. With a capital “C”. It makes me nauseated now to think of how I was—and would still be had God not gotten my attention with life…

You know…life. The daily stuff that happens and then all of a sudden, life smacks you in the head with a brutal sharpness that causes your eyes to sting.

God will deal with complacent…and I personally believe it nauseates Him.

What do you do with this disease? Is it treatable?

I say, “yes”. But it takes some knee work. As in getting down on them and seeking God—asking for forgiveness for the hardness of our hearts and the blindness of our eyes to the plight of others.

I’ve witnessed complacency. It sits comfortably on church pews all across our nation. It has soft knees and not so soft hearts. I’ve seen complacency fill a pulpit…from real life—to televangelist. Those seeking that dollar bill…or mega-dollar bills. Nauseating.

The day we went to the temples in Cambodia, I struggled inside with what I witnessed. People kneeling before a lie…seeking to please a lie. Walking miles in the heat for a lie…tears formed in my eyes as I watched one young woman, possibly early 20’s kneel down and offer something to the dead stone.

But think for just a minute what we are doing every single day. We offer up hours of our lives to dead stone. Maybe it’s not stone, but it’s dead nonetheless. It not only steals your time…but it steals your family. It steals your future…and if I may be so bold to say (I may as well be bold—I told God I’d type what He dictated), I believe it will steal your eternity in heaven…and hand deliver you one to hell. Ouch. That hurt.

Where are you sowing seeds of life? In your church? In your neighborhood? Community?

Or in dead stone.

I’ve spent all the time I intend to with dead stone…I determined a few years ago, that God would have my full attention. If He chose to rearrange my whole life—He could. If He chooses now to send me across the “pond”…I’m His to send.

Truthfully, I am dealing with things since my return. The first trip to Honduras brought things into focus…now, the lens of my camera has been cleaned again. Bolivia brought insight and clarity. Cambodia brings urgency. An urgency that cannot be ignored.

When I came home from Honduras…God really began to deal with me about how I spent my time and money. I worked on it…with His guidance and help. I told a dear pastor friend today, Bolivia was different. Maybe it was because Jeff and I were there together—but there was a feeling of dog-tired-joy. Joy like I’ve never experienced. Peace.

Tonight—as I sit here—reliving moments of the past 3 years, I am praying for more insight into His plan. I will change-rearrange-do what needs to be done to fall in line behind Him. Following Him has been my “sign-off” on my blog for many years, then, I changed it to “Giving Him All”. When I give Him my ALL, I am following Him…and I don’t intend to stop.

I can promise you I won’t be a favorite. It happens when I leave and see God somewhere where the people are hungry for Him and then come home to where the complacent out-number the hungry…even in our own church. My mouth sometimes gets in gear and I can’t stop it…so—if you are one of the complacent…you might want to avoid me for a while.

If you are not sold out completely—willing to give it all up for Him—then I’m afraid you are like the girl in the picture. Standing before the dead stone. You may not be bowing down…but you are there…stuck inside the rocky walls of life…and life has a tendency of crashing down…

Might I add—a crash helmet won’t help…

Only the helmet of salvation will.

Ephesians 6:10-18 NLT

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

A Girl Named Nary

Are you up for a walk? It’s not far…(well, actually if you are standing by the road in front of their house it’s not far…but if you are still here—then it’s about a 13 hour plane ride and 12 hour time zone away.)

And it is hot. Right now it’s lunch time in Cambodia. And it’s very hot—sticky and there is quite a bit of dust in the air from the motorbikes.

So, if you’ve got a bandana or handkerchief, you might want to cover your mouth….otherwise, your throat and lungs will fill with the awful red colored dust and dirt….not so good.

We’re going to Nary’s house with my dear friend Rene`.

Rene` is the sponsor of a young girl from the Ampil School. She has a quiet nature, but loves fun things. This was one visit I was especially looking forward to, not having my own sponsored child in Cambodia, this was the next best thing. Rene` invited us all to take part. I got to be the photographer, Vanessa was the prayer partner, and Becky was the videographer.

Rene` planned it all out in advance. She bought gifts for the mom and dad and made a bracelet for Nary. She had other gifts for her, but the time, effort and thought put into each gift touched our hearts. It was indeed a holy moment watching the two of them meet.

We were all crying by the time we left.

Vanessa prayed the most anointed prayer over the family, which was interpreted and we all prayed along in our hearts—asking God to draw this family into the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, if they were not already His own.

Nary’s mom was so excited to have Rene` there that day. She had cleaned and brewed a pot of tea, which she set out immediately in her best china tea pot. I had to slip over to Ly, one of the interpreter’s and let him know quietly that Rene` was taking medication that would make her very sick if she partook of anything other than what her system was accustomed to. I asked him to please let the family know that we were deeply touched by their generosity, but for Rene`’s health sake, she shouldn’t risk it. They were okay with that—didn’t seem offended in the least, as a matter of fact, their faces were wreathed in pleased smiles as we took the last photo’s before leaving.

Nary’s mom also brought out the family picture album. It was the sweetest thing I’d ever seen. You do that for your relatives who haven’t seen your own children in a long time…to me that was Nary’s mom’s way of letting Rene` know “she was family”. I even took pictures of her pictures of Nary as a baby and toddler. She also showed us the whole family. Nary is the youngest of three.

As we had begun the week singing a song called, “Holy Spirit Rain Down”, it happened that day underneath the tin roof of their open home. The most precious anointing of the Holy Spirit poured down on us that day—and I am so grateful that Rene` asked us to join her.

One of the neatest things happened when we got back to Ampil School. Nary saw Rene` in the school yard talking with some of the other children and left her class immediately and ran out to greet her again and hug her neck. That was so precious to us. Of course, we were all blubbering in tears again at the love and appreciation of this dear child.

12 Hours Away

I’m up.

It’s 2:13 p.m. in the afternoon in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

My body thinks it’s still there. My mind goes there every day. The picture I can’t get out of my head is the children busing themselves home from school….in their boats. Some paddling only a few hundred yards away, some paddling a few miles.
I remember seeing the smiling face of the little boy that at the home visit, we discovered he had a club foot (cleft foot). He wants to become a nurse…our nurses attended his infected toe.

He smiled on.

These children know no other kind of life than the life of the river.

They live on it. They sleep on thin grass mats in their homes on the river. And their body waste goes into it. As the children were leaving, I saw a little one take her bowl that is used to dish water from the boat to keep it from sinking, she scooped water from the river and drank it. I shudder.

There are some children who yet need a sponsor.

What does sponsorship do?

Sponsorship through Mission of Mercy provides them a hot meal, clean water (Mission of Mercy has purchased water filters for the homes in the floating village). Sponsorship ensures that each sponsored child gets proper medical and dental care. They are taught not only to read, write and skills they will need later on, they learn about the love of Jesus Christ and that He gave His life for each one of them…that they are as important to Him as a child living in a palace.

My eyes have been opened to more of the world than before…I am accountable to those I meet—and to what I know.

When talking and sharing with some last week, it was shared with me the need for teachers. Teachers of the English language. In their villages and schools. I instantly thought of those young adults—unmarried—ready to start their lives outside of the homes of their parents—yet not knowing exactly what God has called them to….what about teaching?

Something that struck me especially hard when visiting the Dream Center, is the lack of proper cooking facility they have. Each student is required to cook their own meals—from start to finish. They learn by helping each other. Those older who know how, teach those younger who cannot. They learn.
It was said that they need to know how to care for themselves beyond the walls of the school. They need to be independent. They don’t need coddling--they need LOVING.

Life is tough...everywhere. Not just here...and not just there.

I thought of America…and what we have turned out kids into. Dependent—"I can’t do anything for myself” bunch of young people who think the world owes them a living. When I typed that I instantly thought of those who, reading this would take offense to this post. Maybe your kids aren’t like that at all….but then, maybe they are.

Could your 12 year old prepare his or her own meal from start to finish—(more than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich), clean up after themselves—and know automatically to finish their homework before play?

Uhm…there are no X-Boxes, no Gameboy’s, no IPad, IPod’s etc. The kids at The Dream Center are there to learn. Life skills. How to survive—to make a living at something. To be an entrepreneur. To dream beyond the floating village where they came from…

They have been teaching them to “dream big”. When we stop dreaming….we stop doing…and when we stop doing…we stop living.

I play a small part in the dreams of a young girl in the Dominican Republic. Several women who participated in this trip to Cambodia, now play a part in the dreams of Cambodian children—and they have hope. Would you like to do that? Would you like to ensure that a child has a chance to keep dreaming—beyond the watery walls of their homes?

It’s the need to See-More. Be-More. Do-More.

I had a thought as we were hugging necks and wiping tears for the last time at the Dream Center when we were leaving—Heaven will reveal all that we have accomplished while on this trip. Things we never even witnessed will be revealed. The sewing of curtains by ladies in the West Florida District did more than just take up time and space in our lives…it enhanced the lives of over 40 kids and youth. It showed them that there is beauty in the surrounding world and they could take part in it.

I believe that every day, when they look at their brightly colored walls, they will remember us. They will remember what our white skin looked like, and out diverse voices sounded like. Four of us had a REAL Southern drawl. Imagine that.

As Vanessa, Becky, Rene, and I stood in the room of these girls on the last day, they asked us to sing to them. We sang again, “Holy Spirit Rain Down”. He did.

The girls lifted their hands, with eyes closed, tears coursing, and prayers going up to heaven…the Holy Spirit indeed rained down His mighty presence.

Thank You Jesus for the opportunity to share life for a week with such incredible people, as those we met in Cambodia.

By the way, many of the teens pictured come from the floating village….they have a sponsor….they have a hope and dream of a future beyond the muddy waters of the Ton Le Sap.

A Monday Song

The sounds of the birds...the feel of the soft southern breeze blew through me yesterday morning like Heaven's sweet Breath.

Yet amidst this encounter...these faces still flood my heart and mind.

I can't wait to tell you more about the trip...but for now, it's 6:18. Follow Him to the World

On the 6^th plane ride, sandwiched in the middle row—in the middle seat of the middle row—I was leaned forward, elbows on the tray in front of me—head in my hands—crying silently before the LORD…as He reminded me of His position in the middle.

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Jesus was the man in the middle. The man suspended between heaven and earth…the man hanging in the middle of two choices. Life or death.

On January 6, 2011 God sent me an invitation to join Him on a journey.

With only a nano-second’s worth of hesitation, I said “Yes”!

This journey would take me to Egypt. I was so excited. I planned it out ahead of time of how it would feel to walk “on” the soil that the Israelites walked from bondage into freedom. I expected God to reveal Himself to me—maybe even through a burning bush. Soon though, the pause button was pressed on that invitation.

For weeks, each night as I lay down, I would question God on that invitation. “Did You ask me to see if I’d say yes? Or did You have a purpose?”

We all know that when we walk with God, He orchestrates every single event in our lives. Nothing comes to us without being filtered or sifted through His hands.

At the end of 2011 the destination changed. It was announced to the team that our mission was Cambodia. Some pulled from the trip. I could not. Something inside me told me this was for me.

In prayer one morning at the kitchen sink, I began to pray over the trip, questioning God about the change. “Why did you offer Egypt, when all along You knew it would be Cambodia?”

His reply, “You wouldn’t have jumped at the chance to go to Cambodia.” He was right.

I have questioned Him about many things over the past many months…He has reminded me over and over, “Trust Me. I have the plan—it’s timed just right”.

If you’ve followed my blogsite you are familiar with what I’ve witnessed. Yet there was so much I’ve saved to share in person at my church.

The heat was one thing you need to keep in mind though…If you turned the a/c off, and you piled in an eight passenger van—oh, say about 20 people, in about 30 minutes of body heat combination, the heat you feel might be close to what we felt. The only difference would be the hot sun beating on your head intensifying it. And the smell—of the non-deodorized armpits….

The heat was unbearable at times—we had sweat pouring and pooling every minute of the day. I fought the enemy every single day as he attacked my mind. Others fought more prior to the trip—and he did try me before the trip—but I’d always grab a song and start singing it in my head. Or a Bible verse.

But the day came, when standing in Cambodia, in the heat of the day—when a song was not coming to my mind. Nor could I grab a verse from a file I had tucked away in my heart. Self was the focus.

I believe for most of us—the thoughts centered around our sweating—overheated—suffering from jet lag—headache shrouded selves.

Instead of the God thoughts—this is what came to me:

“This is just too much. You probably need to let this be your last mission trip; This is too hard. You know it would be easier to stay home and just pray for a team—or even send a few dollars now and then—but you really need to consider not doing this anymore.”

If God had called me to praying and giving—then by doing so I would be completely glorifying Him—but when He called me to going—then I’d be walking in disobedience to choose the other—even though they are both good. We are to give—we are to pray—but He told me to GO as well.

I have to confess—I let the enemy talk a whole paragraph full before I asked God to shut him up….God quickly reminded me that Ephesians 6:12-18 tells me what I should be wearing every day—and how I should fight these mind attacks.

Every day it was a battle. I’d sweat—there was a few times of tension between some—and the enemy was trying us all….

After working in 143 degree weather every day, it was too exhausting to write. Instead, I’d get up between 2 and 3, go to the bathroom and sit and write and post the message/devotion from the previous day. Even while I was a few degrees cooler, the enemy still tried. “You can’t write. There’s no way you can do justice to what you’ve seen—why don’t you do something easier…less stressful.” Again, I recognized the enemy working—trying to use my mind and flesh against me. We need to realize that he uses them together to destroy God’s work—and God’s worker.

As I sat there, I began to cry out to God, hot tears falling, the Holy Spirit descended with a cool washing freshness that came on my weary spirit and calmed my mind. It was going to be okay. I handed Him the pen, and He began to write it on my heart. Each time I felt a pause, I’d seek Him for more. This happened every morning around 3 a.m. I waited….He came.

The day we set out for the floating school was 144. And as long as you weren’t sitting in the back of the boat, next to the smoking –thundering engine, it would be bearable…guess where I sat?

The enemy was trying—but that morning I determined to have such non- stop dialogue with Jesus that the enemy would have no room to squeeze in a word.

As I began to see tarps, tin and strips of bamboo as makeshift roofs held up with limbless tree poles, or bamboo poles, the heaviness in my heart increased.

We had worked around and had fallen in love with the teenagers in the dream center for a couple of days, and now we would see firsthand just where most of them came from.

You will see in photo’s in the coming days, some sights that will break your heart—but this is part of God’s world that he WANTS us to see. There is beauty tucked in alongside the ugly of life—we have to choose what we focus on.

Seeing with eyes guided by the Holy Spirit will convict and compel you. It will change you. You may even be a bit unbearable to those who refuse to change their lens…which would sharpen their focus. It’s more comfortable to stay in the life of “soft focus”. In photography, soft focus is where you concentrate on one small area and let the surrounding area blur into the background. That’s exactly what many churches of today are doing.

We have so centralized our focus on one area that we’ve forgotten there is a world out there that is hurting—suffering—hungry—naked and needy.

What we’ve done is choose the comfortable things—the jobs of ministry that require very little work—very little alteration to our lens—or our lifestyle.

Matthew 25:41-46 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

NOTICE they called Him LORD. They knew who He was—I believe Jesus was letting those in His audience and us know—that just because we wear the t-shirt bearing HIS name—and pray over our meals—attend services—pay tithes—does not mean that we’ve got it all together and are serving Him with all we have…it means we’re doing what’s expected. The normal.

It’s all good things—yet there is something else He is requiring…

He wants to change your lens—adjust your focus—remove the filter to enable you to see HIS world….all the heart breaking ugly-as well as the beautiful.

It’s our choice—we are on one side of Christ. To the right or to the left. Just as the two thieves. We are mentally making a decision---our actions reflect that decision made.

We can keep right on doing the few things we are doing with about as much passion as a pencil eraser—or we can put a “for sale” sign in our yard and sell out to God. (Don’t leave here and say I told you to sell your house)

If God told you to sell what you have and meet Me in Cambodia—or Africa—or Bolivia—or the back woods of Northwest Florida…we must be willing—or we will miss out on more than just an opportunity to be used of HIM. We may perhaps miss out on the grandest view of all.

Friends, the Lord reminded me again, we cannot afford to miss an opportunity to see His world…be His hands…in caring for those around us. We must open our hearts..change our focus—remove self from the equation.

Stitching A Dream

When the day began, we knew our emotions would be heavily involved….more so than any other day for me. For some, their home visit was the most emotional day—Rene’s home visit will come in a later post as I need time to assimilate all I saw and heard.

Today, I will take you back to yesterday. Remember, there’s nothing we can change from yesterday—but we can make a difference in our tomorrow by seeing with clear vision (beyond ourselves)—and taking on the challenge of changing things for someone’s future.

Yesterday was warm…I laughed quietly to myself at that—because I had read on someone’s facebook page from home that it was “hot”. Girl, let me tell you…you don’t know hot…and I didn’t either until I came here. So, buck up—wear looser clothing, get comfortable. This will be a long day.

We began with breakfast—and I know, this has been so unlike other mission trips I’ve posted. We posted the food in Honduras, I posted Jeff’s food from Peru just a few months past my return, then we posted every morsel I think, when we went to Bolivia. I’ve not shown you much food…reason? Well, it’s really too hot to eat—even though we’ve eaten…and my mind has not been on the food, even though I’ve enjoyed what I ate—it’s been on the people.

Our last work day at The Dream Center began with us hearing the testimony of Dareth’s wife, Thida (another day for that one too). I’ve never been more amazed at the hand of God than when I sat before this couple and heard all that God worked in their lives—and you need to know—there are things that God does in YOUR life that you have not a clue about. Things He delivers you and I FROM –and that we may never know this side of living. Yet it happens. Daily.

We toured the upstairs class rooms of the school—they were pretty much what I expected after working in the dorm rooms and being in the chapel. Neat-Clean-Simple.

The Dream Center was built by a professional baseball player just over a year ago. The land was purchased and the buildings I have shown you were all constructed for just over $500,000. (I think I remembered that figure correctly.) That is pretty amazing—

As soon as the tour was complete, we quickly began completing our work—in the short time we had until they left for school. A team set out to hang the curtains (Rene and Becky’s assignment), finish the painting (that was Vanessa’s and my assignment), and a group played basket ball and volley ball with the boys, while a group of women did manicures and washed the feet of the girls. I don’t have pictures of any of the activities because I was busy ~~sweating~~ painting, but my friend, Lois Solet, professional photographer went around gathering all the memories in her camera for each of us to take home! What a blessing!

Rene grabbed some shots of the curtain details. I have to say a HUGE thank you to the women of the West Florida District, who came out on a Saturday—some driving for 2 hours, lugging sewing machines, irons, and necessities to complete the project assignment our team was given. (I am humbled and thankful for all the help we received.) Two of our churches took fabric back to their church and had the women’s sewing group work on them (Refuge AG and Heritage AG). Refuge AG, Sister Betty Richardson, and Cindy Pettis monogramed the curtains so that we could leave behind a bit of us on the last day.

After we completed the work, revealing time was here! We were all so excited—I was mentally challenging myself to hold it together. I remembered the morning the ladies assembled to sew and we all began to pray—as each individual prayed over their work back at home, the product of that work had traveled around the world completing a seam in the fabric of His love for us as each (proverbs) woman gives of herself. The two fabrics of lives had finally come together—and soon the picture would be complete.

We gathered in the rooms in as small a group as possible (as much as 36 women can), so as not to overwhelm them…and in they came. Hands in the air, covering their faces, smiling with joy, us trying to fight tears, then finally giving up…let them course down our dirty, sweaty faces. Let them see our love in liquid form—as we envision HIS love in bright red liquid form as it pooled at the foot of the cross.

These girls had made their way into our hearts—and us theirs. Beautiful, plush bears had been supplied for every girl. Ribbons of bright matching colors were added, and blankets along with a gift bag of necessities and treats were put on each bed.

There are still some needs. There are a couple of girls who do not yet have a bed. They sleep on the floor. There are a few who don’t have a mattress (the thin mat)—we had taken up money for use at the center, hopefully, this bed situation will be corrected soon.

There are things that I saw that maybe no one else saw. Things that others may have witnessed that I missed….we each have memories from this day—some I’m not ready to share…it will come though. Much of this will be shared in person—maybe one person at a time, or maybe in a group—but know this: they have left their mark on us with indelible ink…

A few last shots before we set out today—on our last visit with Cambodia. We leave tonight for home—but our team won’t arrive until Saturday afternoon.

Watering Life

All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, he devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from him. 2 Samuel 14:14 NLT

Yesterday, you and I can’t have back. No do-overs.

We don’t live in the movie set of “Groundhog Day”….we can’t work at it until we get it right—treating people as if they don’t exist. Just because we don’t see people everyday who live on the other side of the world, certainly does not mean they don’t exist.

Ly Mak (pronounced, Lee Maah), an incredible man with a heart for Jesus Christ and his people, has shared something of their culture with me everyday. “The greatest thing you can do for another is “show them how”.

Ly’s words strike at the heart of all cultures. As we constantly “give” to our own children, they constantly “expect”. And many times, they turn from what we give, to what the world gives—but the world gives death. Nothing. Only Christ Jesus gives life everlasting…water from the purist Source.

Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:13-14 NLT

These children were washing their pots. This was something they had been taught to do—by demonstration. They learned how to pump the water from someone who was familiar with the water pump, teaching them.

Ampil School in Cambodia is a school sponsored by Mission of Mercy, but operated by the government. Mission of Mercy is able to have chapel with the children once a week…it’s a way of watering once a week.

Let me ask you…are you watering? As your life is daily spilling out like water, are you watering anyone with the Word? With a heart of love for others—as Jesus’ example and very words instructed…

Matthew 18:14 says, “Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish”.

Question: Are you a follower of Christ? Do you live your life seeking to do HIS will everyday? This verse is our reason for doing what we do….it is our Father’s will do teach them—“show” them as Ly reminded me. Not only how to live and function daily, but how to know Christ. Mission of Mercy takes this responsibility to heart—they show—they teach. If we do not teach—they perish. They perish of lack of knowledge. The water is spilled out on the ground daily and never comes back—and never nourishes anyone. When this happens, we have failed to do the will of the Father. Obedience doesn’t happen by accident.

There are faces you pass everyday in Walmart—on the street—in restaurants—maybe in your own home—they need love. They need teaching. They need showing and teaching by example.

Where are you watering? Is your life spilling out uncontrollably before you in days never to be regained? My heart breaks at the sight of all these children— knowing what they come from and what kind of existence they go back into when they leave this school—with it’s nice buildings.

I’ve heard horror stories of parents who sell their children to a stranger—at the “promise” of an education or better life, for as little as $50, only to have their child sold into sex slavery. It happens to children everyday. All over the world.

The seeds must be sown into their lives now—watered daily by the Word. LOVE must be poured out—it will not happen by accident. It will be our own sacrifice and determination that sees the job done. You know, when we get to heaven, we won’t be asked, “How much did you make?” But rather— “What did you do with what I gave you”…(remember the parable of the talents?)

What are you doing with what you have?

This post probably seemed hard to read. I won’t apologize. Let me just tell you—seeing what I’ve seen has been HARD to see. If I were in front of you, I’d probably lean forward and say that with a passion that made my eyes brim with tears as they’ve done everyday since arriving. Once you’ve seen you are responsible (reading is seeing). I am responsible to the child we sponsor. She doesn’t live here—but she does live. And I must water.

Some of you, since reading that last statement, may never come back to this blog—because you are not sure you want to be responsible…or, maybe you know you don’t want to be responsible. But—since God’s Word “says” it already—YOU ALREADY WERE RESPONSIBLE. I simply showed you the pictures to make it alive in your part of the world.

Thank you for praying…today (it’s Thursday here), we will go back to The Dream Center to finish the painting, hang the curtains (THANK YOU ladies of the West Florida District A/G!), play with the kids, share tons of love, shed many tears and feel the Holy Spirit—Rain Down. (That’s another blog—as are my home visit’s from yesterday. There is only so much Kleenex in Walmart-and I encourage you—get a few boxes.)

Mission of Mercy ~ Mechrey Floating School

She extends a helping hand to the poor and opens her arms to the needy. Proverbs 31:20 NLT

The most talked about woman in the Old Testament I think, is the Proverbs 31 woman. There are groups named after her, websites bearing her name, and women all over long to be characterized as that “proverbs woman”.

I’ve found a common thread in what makes her the way she is. I purposefully used present tense in that statement, because the “proverbs woman” exists today.

The common thread is that she is constantly looking outside herself at the needs of others. She works hard because of the needs of her family and she speaks wise because of the needs of those around her.

“…extends a helping hand to the poor…”

I’ve seen poor in America…we have a “system” called welfare that we depend on to do the job…and look how it has affected our people.

Lazy. Waiting for someone else to do the job. “Feed me, cloth me, shelter me”—the system cries.

Rarely do we look the needs in the eye….but on Tuesday, I saw the needs in the eyes of many. It was not only the need to be fed, clothed, or even educated, but the greater need was the need to be loved. And when we truly “love” beyond ourselves, the other needs are met. Why? Because we love.

Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard. Proverbs 21:13 NKJV

Open ears, open hearts, and open eyes will share and show love. This is the thing I have discovered since last night. I didn’t see one out begging yesterday. They are all working for what they ate. They ate very little—but they worked to provide.

To see the needs of others, we must be looking. We can choose to sit in our easy chair—or be seeking ways to help another. (Don’t think for a second I’m saying you can’t sit in your chair and relax—for Jesus set the example of resting—BUT—He went about daily meeting the needs of others.) The choice is ours—close off our hearts—or open them wide. When we open our hearts to love as Jesus loved—there is no stopping the power of God in our lives as we walk in His ways and speak His Truth.

Before you look at these pictures and tell me what you think—let me remind you that you cannot smell this picture, nor can you hear the sounds. Those two vital parts of our senses bring the picture to life. Take my word for it…

We left early yesterday morning, set out on a mission to minister. To play with children, teach them songs, and share the love of Jesus. We passed out treats, school supplies, blankets and toys. You may question why a blanket in this heat. They are so accustomed to this weather that when it turns cooler, they are truly cold.

We traveled the muddy waters (which is way more than mud) for about 30 minutes to the Mechrey Floating School which is the village school operated and supported by Mission of Mercy.

Ride with me while I take you back down the river….

Grab a seat, keep your hands inside the boat—don’t trail them in the water—

We were in two boats, with the supplies packed on top—now for the full effect of your ride, stand near a car exhaust that is a “smoker with an oil problem”. Stand REAL close. Like maybe put your face in a position to be bathed in the smoke….oh, almost forgot, make sure the muffler has a hole in it—and turn up the volume.

Okay. I think you might get the picture. --Wait, one more thing, turn up the heat. Enough to make your sweat pool and run…everywhere.

If the love of Christ is overruling the flesh…your face will be wreathed in smiles like Jamie’s was as the anticipation built for the children she had come half way around the world to meet.

We were a group of 36 American women, a sight to behold on the rough clay banks of the river that morning. We had several pair of eyes staring at the spectacle of us climbing into the boats, settling and resettling ourselves into the seats. Many came for a closer look at these “strange birds” here in their land.

We gave candy to the children who came to inspect these women on a mission. We all know children love candy—especially some that they’ve never seen before. The bright colored wrappers of the lollipops made them hold out their hands in anticipation of what was inside.

Finally turned around in the right direction, we’re off!

I won’t post all the pictures here (the visit to the school alone resulted in 678 pictures)—nor will I tell all here today—I’m still wrapping my mind around what I saw. But a few pictures I want to share that I think will tell the story without very many words.

A special thank you to those who prayed yesterday…God is as awesome –ON TIME—God—EVERY TIME. Nothing escapes HIS vision. Nothing is beyond His knowledge. Before we set out yesterday—the day was in His calendar. The choice is ours to see with His eyes, or refuse to see—and harden our hearts to the plight of so many. When we see with His eyes—we see with love. And that love of Christ sets out to make a difference in the world….one child at a time.

How can you make a difference? Open your eyes and see the needs around you. Seek God about sponsoring a child. I am showing you the needs here—but there are needs all over the world. Even out your own back door. But you have to look.

Visit Mission of Mercy and see all the ways you could help make a difference. You can’t take on the world…but you can help one child. Maybe more. We waste far more than $34 a month on trivial things…what if that same $34 went to educate, feed and administer medical and dental care to a child who without you, would not learn, or be taken care of. I’m not sure what the average life span in the village is, but it can’t be very old. (Not when they drink the same water that their waste has emptied into.) Mission of Mercy works to meet the critical needs of the children. They also work hand in hand with Convoy of Hope in times of crisis.

My question to us all today: What are we going to do with what we have? Candy stated it very well on Sunday, “They do so much with so little, yet we do so little with so much”.

Work Day 2-Cambodia

I didn’t have one drop of energy to blog last night…so sorry if you were waiting on pictures!

There are several artists in the group! They have enjoyed bringing cheer and color to the girls rooms!

Okay, NEAT thing---Shauna Wigington, the young lady who preached for us on Sunday is the granddaughter (along with her sister, Luanna in the back of the room here) of one of our former pastor’s, Reverend Henry Barfield! Bro. Barfield was my pastor when I was a teenager! This was a sweet surprise! God knew all those years ago when I used to see Shauna when she would visit her grandparents that one day…she and I would be in Cambodia on a mission together…

While we rested yesterday from the heat and painting project, we were joined by a group of precious girls….and we sang with them…it was incredibly sweet.

I just wish they wore name tags like we do so we could remember their names! The one on my right was their worship leader Sunday—awesome heart for God.

We will actually see where she came from today (it’s 5:00 a.m. here)

Pressing on in the Journey

I want to share some thoughts with you for just a minute. Philippians 3:16 says "...hold on to the progress we have already made"...

I pray before I write, speak, teach--whatever, there is nothing I can do without the Holy Spirit leading and guiding everystep (word). BUT with God--the Word says, I can do ALL things--because HE is my strength--none of my own.

When climbing these steps yesterday I had to remind myself of HIS strength.

When we had first begun the trek up to the top, we had gone about half way, had stopped to breathe. I was sort of straggling behind--mostly because I didn't want my eyes to miss a single thing that HE might have put in my path for me to see. (It's our responsibility to "LOOK"--you will understand that more later.)

As I was hesitating at the next doorway that led to the next level, looking out over the fields of precisely placed stones, a tall gray haired man appeared coming out of the doorway, looked straight at me and said, "Climb all the way to the top. The view is worth it."

Well, if you know me at all, I pondered this, rolled it back and forth in my heart and knew God was speaking to me through a man I had never laid eyes on. It actually went with some words the Lord gave me on the plane and I scribbled them down.

Philippians 3:12- 14 "I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us." (NLT) emphasis mine.

When I listened to the missionary speak yesterday, I reliazed there is a pattern to what God is saying to me. Forgetting what is behind. If Darth, the missionary, had not purposefully laid every tormenting pain behind him and walked out of that pain to serve God with all his heart, there would be hundreds of children not yet reached today. Hundreds more hungry. Hundreds without the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. He and his wife Thida have instilled in the lives of every single child they have contacted--a purpose and faith in Christ Jesus.

We are to do the same.

Right now, millions believe a lie.

The lie they believe is not alive--cannot save--cannot heal--cannot rescue--does not love.

The lie they believe kills. It kills dreams and visions. Offers no hope for a future...for life everlasting....only death.

What Darth and Thida have they freely give. As Peter and John were at the gate called Beautiful (Acts 3:1-10), they stand with no alms--but rich in Christ Jesus--willing and ready to give all they have.

What are we giving? Without our help--they remain just as they are. Crippled. Blind. Deaf. Mute. Without hope--no dreams--or visions of a future outside the walls of lies.

You and I both have something we can give. Whether you are ever able to make the journey here or not--you can still go. You go by sponsoring a child. Giving them hope. A chance at a better life--one filled with the TRUTH --the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

It will take a sacrifice on the part of some. But that is what God calls us to do--give freely of what we have. Let me share one more passage of Paul's writing to the church at Philippi:

Philippians 4:15-19 As you know, you Philippians were the only ones who gave me financial help when I first brought you the Good News and then traveled on from Macedonia. No other church did this. Even when I was in Thessalonica you sent help more than once. I don’t say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to recieve a reward for your kindness. At the moment I have all I need—and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with Epaphroditus. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God. And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. (NLT emphasis mine)

What are you willing to share--to give up so that a child--can know the truth that will set her free?

Think about what you spend $34 for each month. In reality--this is little more than a shirt. As a couple, you can't eat out for $34. If you sacrificed an evening out so that a child could know...thing of the value that is over the steak and salad....

I'm not trying to "convince" you--I am following the leading of the Holy Spirit in my typing, and if in reading you are convicted...then HE is speaking to your heart--not me.

I pray always that these words are not mine--but rather HIS alone. And all glory goes to my Father.

Visit the Mission of Mercy site today and read about how you can become involved in the life of one child. Hang his or her picture on your refrigerator with your kids and grandkids. Let God multiply what you have by sharing with another. God's multiplication is far different from ours. We think in terms of money...always. But His blessings are far beyond any paper money that can burn or be stolen.

Above all...don't stop climbing. Keep pursuing the heart of God...let HIM do all the leading. But resolve to follow HIM anywhere.

Can I give you a hint...when you hear in your mind, "that's too much for you--or too hard--or what will people think... or any negative thought", you are on the right track...just keep pressing on. The devil wants to stop you--but straighten your back and climb higher.

The view is so worth the journey.

Church in Cambodia

Today was a really good day. We started it out going to church at the Dream Center at 8:00 this morning. Words fail to describe the feeling that comes over you hearing a song sung in two different languages…but it was amazing.

Their worship team was anointed—and lifted their hearts and voices as one to The One….amazing.

As I stood there with the others singing and praising, I began to wonder how it all must sound to our Father…music beyond imagination. One song, many voices, different languages…sweet aroma.

Vanessa and I sang a song, Jamey gave her testimony—the abbreviated version (those kids really couldn’t understand the full story—but what a blessing she was! She is such an “on fire” woman for God and she blesses everyone she comes into contact with! An amazing witness and testimony of God’s saving, redeeming, and life changing power!

Shauna Wigington brought us THE word for the hour…and for every single soul present.

After the service, we went outside to interact with the kids for a bit, play some games and and change up the order of the day. After the games and activity time with the kids, we went back inside and heard the most amazing testimony of the A/G Missionary over The Dream Center. His testimony was printed up in the Pentecostal Evangel in 2006 (which I will later share). Tonight is not the night for the details—the reality of what he experienced and shared—and then what we saw today at the temples we visited, has my mind unable to grasp it enough to do it justice. I will share a few pictures—and retire for the night. It has been a long EXHAUSTING day.

Tomorrow we will go back to the dream center and finish the painting—it will be an amazing day—completing the project (please pray that there are no setbacks on anything).

Tuesday is the day we will travel to the floating school…did I tell you it was about a 30 minute boat ride away? (Are you praying?) These boats will take 36 women to the village where we will do home visits with some of the children that are sponsored by the women who are with us….that will be a life changing day—I am certain. Some are concerned about the bathrooms….as they have no electricity…and they “float” on the water.

We’ll see….

I’ve learned a lot of information about the public school system here…it’s free…but it costs A LOT. According to the missionary, the kids can go to school, but the fees for everything is astronomical. The government pays the teachers about $30 a month—but many times the teacher will go for months and not be paid…therefore the teacher will refuse to teach the kids during the day, instead choosing to force the parents to hire him or her out as a private tutor for their children in the evenings. If the parents refuse, the children are treated harshly and even punished during the school day.

The Dream Center is “dream” come true for the children that attend. It is a vocational school, teaching them all life skills, as well as gives them training in computer, music, and Bible Studies. Dreams

Saturday (which was your Friday), as we traveled to the Dream Center by bus to begin our first day of work, I noticed much of the roadside shack/shops and terrain was very similar to where we visited in Bolivia…in that it was in a very poor state. Much activity in third world countries may be similar—

Children with very little clothes or food.—Very little chance of a future…or maybe vacant of dreams and hopes of something more….

We passed many motorbikes with several people on them—of all ages. Stacked and layered on the bikes to make insure safety? Really? We would stroke out over that at home. Yet it’s their way of life here. The motorcycle that caught my attention and kept me thinking on it most of the day was a pink bike, with a couple of young kids on it---and the word “dream” painted on the side.

Since words themselves, tend to catch my attention, this word caught it and held it as I began to think of the kind of dreams these children may have.

A dream to own a car? No. Probably not.

A dream to have a family? Maybe.

A dream for education? Why not?

A dream to make a difference? I think so. We will hear the testimony of ones this week who are making a difference (more on that later in the week).

Our dreams and hopes keep us going---they give us a focus beyond the pain of today. Many of these children endure such hardships, all they can see is what today brings…very little hope for future dreams.

What I’ve learned is that when you sponsor a child—you give them a chance to actually dream. To have a hope beyond the rice patties—beyond the fields of life stealing hard labor. You give their dreams a chance to grow. For $34 a month many of these ladies on this trip have planted a seed of hope—and the promise of dreams into the hearts and lives of children and teens.

As we stepped off the bus, the smells were familiar. It smelled like life—with the struggles and hardships that we have a tendency to turn our backs on. I mean, let’s be honest. If it smells, we turn away… If it causes us to “miss out on what we want”, we have a tendency to say, “well that’s not for us to worry about”….

In Matthew 28:18-20, when Jesus gave His disciples the Great Commission, He didn’t say, if it smells pleasant…

or “if it fits within your schedule”….

or He didn’t even say, “if it works out in your budget”…

He simply said GO. Tell them. Teach them. Baptize them. I’m afraid we’ve lived in a world of convenience so long we think everything MUST revolve around our convenience.

Yes, I am writing this from a room that is “not” cool. The a/c doesn’t work as it should—and yes, we could go downstairs and complain….but you know, I have felt convicted of that particular complaint…my eyes sting with tears this morning as I recall how many complaints my lips have uttered for my own selfish desires. And yet He still blesses me.

My grandchildren have food. Shelter. Opportunities for education that is FREE.

Look at the faces in the pictures. Picture yourself giving up something to enable them to dream. Giving them a hope for a better tomorrow. One where they too can make a difference in the life of another.

Thank you Mission of Mercy for giving this opportunity “to the utter most” parts of the world.

Day “Two” of Traveling

We began this morning with prayer and breakfast….in that order. The Presence of God was so real—having heard amazing testimonies from others—and praising and singing songs to the Most High God, the little band of traveling missionaries you see here were blessed to be together. Only God could do something as amazing as this!

We sang and prayed last night (Thursday night), ate REAL Chicago style pizza—that tasted more like a huge mozzarella stick with a crust—and then settled in to sleep. Even though the air conditioner in our room wasn’t functioning as well as the one in Vanessa’s girls room across the hall—we found we couldn’t complain. (Do NOT tell Jeff that I was hot and didn’t complain)

We are right now sitting (as I’m typing) in the airplane—that HUGE plane—and are experiencing turbulence…to the max. I am remembering a discussion with one of the ladies before leaving—she having never flown before—me—sounding like a “pro” although, I’m FAR from it (I question everything!), I told her, “just think of it as a bumpy bus ride”. Trying to assure her ahead of time for the high sky-ruts in the road….yet I didn’t think it would be this rough. Funny though. As I’m typing, my keyboard is shifting—I keep erasing what I’ve typed because I keep hitting the “wrong” key.

I have just been told we are above Canada right now.

Wow. Hello, Ann, We are passing your boarders. Well, probably not, but we are crossing your country. I’d stop in for a spell, but I’m afraid we’re in a bit of a hurry today. We have children to meet—and work to do.

We have just discovered the two rows in front of us is a family (complete with grandmother, aunt, and children) of our fellowship—originally from Vietnam, having been in the US for a while, they are returning home. Husband is a teacher, she is a mission worker. Again, Wow.

Last night, as we returned to our room to “settle before Him”, and talk, we read from yesterday’s devotion, Jesus Calling: “Let me help you through this day. The challenges you face are far too great for you to handle alone. You are keenly aware of your helplessness in the scheme of events you face. this awareness opens up a choice: to doggedly go it alone or to walk with Me in humble steps of dependence.” (Jesus Calling, Sarah Young)

He wants us to depend on Him…not choosing our own path, but following the one HE laid out.

He has a plan…and His plan is good. Psalms 143:8 says “Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.

We are blessed to be able to travel with this team of women, and Mission of Mercy trip director, Candy Wigington—many new friendships are forged along the way…all in HIS plan.

I can’t wait to see what HE unfolds next. One thing I know: At every single point of crisis—or what we “thought” was a crisis—HE was there. This morning as we prayed, we sang,

“He is here, hallelujah,

He is here…amen,

He is here Holy Holy, I will bless His name again,

He is here,

listen closely, hear Him calling out your name,

He is here, you can touch Him,

YOU will never be the same”….*

We serve a God who IS here….and He will meet us there as well.

The Windy City

Truly it is. Windy Chicago.

We arrived here late this afternoon, having encountered delays in Washington DC.

I'm thrilled to have washed off the airplane--have my stomach full of a steak and cheese Subway sandwich, yet I did so without thinking of those who won't be able to "wash off the day" with a simple shower or bath. Nor will they fill their tummies with any sustenance.

As I packed yesterday and worked around the house, getting all my errands finished--and the details of "leaving" home behind, I found myself battling. That will sound odd to many --but believe me it was very real. I won't go into all the details of the battle, but the enemy is out to kill-steal-and destroy...and believe me--he is on his job. IF he can get you to doubt your purpose he will do his best to make you believe you "have no purpose". BUT YOU DO!

Mission of Mercy is a purpose FILLED ministry--out to meet the needs of children all around the globe. In poverty sticken areas such as the one we will be working this next week, Siem Reap, Cambodia--I already know that this will be a life altering trip.

Just a tidbit since arriving--leaving out some struggles--we were picked up by the hotel shuttle bus and when it pulled up--we were taken aback by the outside appearance. A large cardboard covered one window where a "rock" had hit the window and busted it.....hmmmm. Made us question the hotel...but when we arrived--we were very pleased.

We all praised the LORD sitting together tonight--thankful for how God brought us all together.

Now we are all together in one place, Rene, Jamie, Joanna, Vanessa, myself...and last but not least, Becky. (God has stretched us all today!) (There are 36 ladies in all from various states)

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24 NIV

How Far Can You See?

Without my glasses, I can't see very far....
But with my glasses on --or my contacts in, my eyesight is much better....

Still there are things I cannot see.

Every time I see this particular sign near my folk's house, I think about our trust in God. Our sight is limited. Therefore we must put our faith, hope, confidence and complete trust in Him...who sees all things.

Are there things blocking your vision?

My vision has been blocked, distorted--and blinded at times.

There have been times when I "thought" I knew the outcome of a situation--yet I was surprised....

He alone knows the outcome of this particular mission trip to Cambodia.

Jeff will deliver 3 of us to the airport tomorrow morning very early--and we will leave here--knowing that God already knows what is across the water...

He knows the "who"--the "what"--the "how"....and the why. It's because of HIM that we go.

As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. 2 Samuel 22:31 NKJV

I cannot fully express to you tonight in words all that I have felt today. To say this day has been emotionally tumultuous would be mild. I had to put my hope and trust in HIM early this morning...and remind myself that HE planned this trip--not me--all day long.

We (the girls going) really appreciate your prayers. If you wake up during the night...please pray for us....when you sit down to your meal...please pray for those we will be feeding...we will be feeding them "Jesus"....with all we have in our hearts. The school where we will be part of the time doing VBS has no electricity....no running water....are you getting the picture? Go to the blog I wrote the other day and look at the photos....

We are packed to the MAX with supplies and gifts for the children. Jeff helped me rearrange and shift my "stuff" several times to get the weight right....(Pray).

As internet works...we will both post each night. PRAY that the internet works without ANY complications. I believe HE cares about EVERY detail of our lives.

Keep your eyes and heart open--even though you can't see over the hill...

He can.

Cambodia Bound

Wow.

It seems like only last week...yet this journey began last year.

This week I will be traveling with a few friends...on a mission....

Our mission is to minister in every way we possibly can to the lives and hearts of children across--way-- way--- way--- across the water.

Many of these little children live on the water. In housing like we've never seen. Some, I've been told may sleep in a small boat at night with a tarp stretched over the top. (This breaks a mama's heart)

I will be one of two official bloggers for the trip! I will get the link of the other one and you can keep up REALLY well with the happenings over there. (Way over there.)

The flight is (I think) 12 hours or more--and they are 12 hours (or more) ahead of our time zone.

Am I nervous you asked? Not especially.

This trip has been on God's calendar for so long...and yet the day I thought I was signing up for another trip--(the one that got cancelled), He knew in advance. He also knows me by heart--and knows that I might have shied away from this particular trip....but this trip...even more than any other---is an ordained trip for "this messenger".

We will work with Mission of Mercy at the Dream Center, as well as the Mission of Mercy School in the village :)

I will upload a picture of the Dream Center later--with a special project that many of the ladies of the West Florida District Assemblies of God-took to heart and sewing machine!

A wonderful sewing day making curtains for the Dream Center dorm rooms--where we sewed "seams" and sowed "seeds" into lives most of those will not see this side of heaven...but that didn't matter.

What really mattered was the lives we could share Christ with...here and there.

Toothbrushes have been donated-(Thanks to Savanah's mom!)-gifts bought and readied for the trip. Some have asked if they can donate and send....the answer? Yes. Make it small--no liquids--no guns or anything resembling war toys. Coloring books, crayons, fun stickers, balloons, flat puzzles, etc. You can drop off at the District office no later than Monday, March 5, 2012--or call me and let me know you are coming and I will meet you there!

And Pray. Pray. Pray. This is the longest (so far) trip I've been on. Pray for the families of all that are going--that all stay healthy and safe--so that we can focus on what we are sent to do.

Give them Jesus.

Sweet Times-Mother-Daughter’s Retreat

As we gathered in the condo unit provided to us by dear friends, the worries and stress began to melt away. (Okay, if I’m going to be REAL honest, it took several hours, a few tears, and a “mother” talk.)

I believe, with all my heart—we are the most blessed daughters (and 1 son, Jeff) on the planet. Our mother is a treasure—beyond all treasures.

On Saturday we did the unthinkable with Pier Park less than 5 minutes away…we stayed in our jammies until 3 o’clock in the afternoon! We drank coffee, chia tea, and relaxed. This was a retreat focused on Him. The Giver of Life.

As we each poured out some “life issues” we each took turns pouring in to the other one. And finally, we laid it all down at the foot of the cross. We prayed—each in turn—for the others in the family. Every single name was called. Every single need was mentioned. Every tear was caught by the Hand that holds us all…..His.

We finally left that afternoon and headed to Pier Park—not necessarily to “shop”, but instead to look (and eat). Red Robin offered us up some tasty burgers…and of course the “Towering Onion”. This was such a different retreat—shopping was really not on our minds….we relished time spent together. The couch—with the glass door facing the gulf was the place to burrow down and rest. Reflecting as twice a beautiful bird joined us…and y’all….this little bird had a purple necklace on. Purple feathers laced it’s pretty neck….we noticed.

If you don’t notice things that God puts in your path—shame on you.

Psalms 37:23-24 says, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall for the LORD holds them by the hand.” (NLT, emphasis mine)

What an incredibly sweet God we serve.

I know many have noticed the lack of blogs…the reason? Busy. Much of my time is spent “writing” things out in my prayer journal, rather than putting them here….it is a time of seasoning—and testing that I’m in right now. The seasoning is where He is adding things to my heart and spirit—that I pray is bringing Him glory.

A Letter From Wanda

If Wanda could write a note from heaven today, this is what it "might" say...

Dearest Sisters,

I love what you're doing for the Lord! It is so exciting to see and hear the good reports being broadcast throughout heaven of the lives being touched and hearts changing---eyes looking to Christ! As it is written in the Most Holy Word, "Therefore since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfector of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of God's throne."

Paul's words are so fitting for what I need to share---however, I will change the word "brothers" to "sisters"---for dear ones, that is what you are!

"When I came to you, sisters, announcing the testimony of God to you, I did not come with brilliance of speech or wisdom. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and power, so that your faith might not be based on men's wisdom, but on God's power." (1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Holman CSB) I can say with all assurance for your sometimes weary hearts, "No eye has seen, no ear heard and you could not imagine---try as you might---the glories awaiting your souls---what God has prepared for those who truly love Him!" (paraphrased 1 Corinthians 2:9)

I think, after having met that dear brother Paul, who penned those words to the Church at Corinth, he truly meant an exclamation point to end that sentence! He is full of the brightest joy you can imagine!
If I could share with you my heart from this side today, it would be, keep on. Go further. Tell more. Love deeper. Live everyday as if you'd not have another. Take delight in the simple things. See God in everything. Let go of the burdens you are trying to carry alone. He really is there to lift you up! Most of all, never quit---don't look back. Only ahead at what lies before you! The journey is so worth the destination!---no matter how rocky at times.

It's almost time! We are anticipating the trumpet sound as you are! For when that sound is heard---we will be joined again! And joined as the spotless Bride of Christ! I love you all!

Now, before anyone thinks I've lost my marbles, ---I do know that this didn't come from Wanda---but if she could share with us today...maybe this is what she would encourage us to do. Don't you think?

In my cleaning out and going through books, I found one of her note cards that I had bought her several years ago. Only one card left. It is blank. The message was clear to me. No words could express fully the joy, the prize, the splendor she has experienced so far! I am glad for her...although there are days my heart aches to see her. I know one day soon we will!

I wrote this poem shortly after the funeral and shared it for the first time in 2009, and wanted to share it again today. I hope if you are reading this, and don't know the LORD, I pray with all my heart that you will "seek HIM". Seek to know Him---and love Him with all your heart.....the journey is not long now. Only a little way left to go.

Family, don't cry for me now.
For the place I am saving,
Is for the way you are each paving,
That others should know Him.
As we were all taught.

So love one another,
Clinging only to Him,
Know that I'm whole now,
And happy with Him.

For you all I'll be waiting,
Just a hop skip and jump,
Soon you'll all join me,
Why, you're over the hump!

Remember it takes dedication,
Determined heart too,
The way won't be easy,
But this I know you can do.

Musings From February~The Steadfast Anchor

If you have any familiarity with trees at all...you recognize this shedding trunk.

If you have any imagination at all (as Anne of Green Gables might say), you will see that the frail, even crispy slices of this tree resembles the fragile dollar bill. Yes. You heard me right.

Actually for two little girls, who had never even held a dollar bill, these pieces of crepe myrtle tree trunk fit the bill for us playing "store keepers", selling watermelons by the road side at our grandmother's house in the summer. To be more precise, it was "Mamo's house".

The road was the very old fashioned kind. (Just as everything else in those days.) Simple sand and clay mixture. Just plain dirt. As we stood in the shade of the crepe myrtle tree, the idea of using the curling, pieces of tree bark as paper money seemed ideal to the two little girls under the age of 6.

Very few cars passed by, but that really didn't matter. Wanda and I had fun just playing in the yard.

Outside, near the kitchen window, Mamo had a very primitive old wooden bench. The bench was quickly transformed every time we came to visit into a cook top for Wanda and me. We cooked in a tin can with water, everything from flower petals to fresh grass clippings, adding a little dirt as a substitute for salt and pepper for taste.

No, we did not "really" taste it...we just imagined it. Drawing imaginary houses in the dirt with a stick, we imagined that our houses were large and that we lived close to one another.

As adults, only parts of the childhood dreams came true.

While our houses were not large, we finally were able to live near one another for about 3 years, ending February 12, 2008. I enjoyed the ability to be at her house within 5 minutes if needed, but the talking on the phone was a constant.

Everyday at work and every almost afternoon while going home, Wanda called both me and Aimee.

It's sweet and funny how our conversations always wound up to one big question. Almost every single day. "What are you cooking for supper?"

Sharing recipes and ideas for organizing was a constant topic of conversation between us girls. It was these sweet memories that traipsed around in our heads and hearts as the days went by.

At Christmas in 2007, which in my mind seems like just a few weeks ago, Wanda's skin coloring was not good and her breathing was labored. I looked at her when they came into our house for our Christmas Eve Family Supper, and without the medical training my sister, Aimee has I knew there was something very wrong. Wanda had oxygen at home to assist her, even had a portable tank, but she didn't want to be treated as if she was having problems. She wanted to be normal. And be treated normal. No extra attention. An oxygen tank would cause others to treat her "special". Wanda didn't want that.

After supper we had prayer and sharing, as is our tradition. We prayed long for Wanda. Mother stood before us and described the feelings and prayers that the LORD had woke her with in the wee hours of several mornings in the past few days.

"Family, you will need to be on your knees more than you ever have before, if you intend to make it in these last days. We will face things harder than we've ever faced. It will take prayer. But family, the LORD reminded me to anchor to HIM---the Anchor holds."

...those words rang over and over in my heart and mind for many days. Still they do almost weekly.

The Anchor holds.

I soon realized the truth in her words. About the Anchor.

We all did.

As life for us changed on February 12, 2008, our God did not change. His promises that we had read all of our lives, became our life line.

The TRUTH held us fast.

I don't know what you are struggling with today, but let me assure you that the Anchor of Christ held us, and He will hold you....no matter what you are facing.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
