Going Back to Nature, Yelena Yemchuck captures Kirsten Dunst in “The Girl Who Walks on Air” for the current issue of Vogue Italia. While not completely flatlining, Kirsten’s career has been floundering in the last few years, as this one-time indie-queen has been fighting some personal issues. I’m not a huge fan of the actress, but I’m all for artists getting their mojo back. And I did love her in the movie where she played a 1920′s mistress to the Cosmopolitan Magazine-Magnate. She was the ultimate “flapper-girl” with just the right amount of sass & frass.

KALAMAZOO--The Western Film Society will present the critically acclaimed film "Melancholia" Friday through Sunday, Feb. 17-19, at Western Michigan University's Little Theatre. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7 and 9:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 and 5 p.m. General admission is $5 and $3 for WMU students with a valid Bronco Card.

"Melancholia" is the latest film from director Lars von Trier. Kirsten Dunst stars as a young bride named Justine, a role that garnered her a Best Actress win at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Justine's world, nay the earth itself, is thrown into chaos by the imminent approach of a new stellar body—a previously unknown massive blue planet that could mark the end of life as we know it. "Melancholia" has a run time of 136 minutes and is rated R for graphic nudity, sexual content and adult language. The film, released in May 2011, is shown in English.

Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia” is a ravishing, emotional and often very funny film about a wedding gone wrong, the end of the world and a woman suffering from profound depression. It’s a story of competing and oppositional impulses, a story in two sections that’s about two sisters and two planets. It’s also the story of its director’s internal struggle, meaning his own struggle with mental illness and his struggle with maturity. After making the most composed and beautiful and conspicuously adult film of his career, von Trier seemed to wish to thrust it away or destroy it, which was partly why he got in all that trouble last spring by saying stupid things about Hitler.

Kirsten Dunst and Other Stars Skype in for Sandro Kopp's Internet-Age Portraits

NEW YORK— Actor and artist Sandro Kopp has the aura of celebrity about him. A New Zealander via Germany, Kopp has appeared as an elf in Lord of the Rings III: Return of the King and a centaur in the Chronicles of Narnia. These days he also takes a role as romatic companion to the British actress Tilda Swinton. When ARTINFO met Kopp at his latest exhibition “There You Are,” a solo show of portrait paintings at Lehmann Maupin gallery in the Lower East Side, the shaggily bearded artist had the comfortable air of someone surrounded by famous friends — which, of course, he was.

The exhibition features a series of hazy facial close-ups, slightly abstract and painted in eye-pleasing jewel tones. Walking around the gallery, viewers will slowly recognize one portrait sitter after another — is that R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe? Chinese performance artist Zhang Huan? Kirsten Dunst? Yet the sensation that every image is flattened and discolored in the same oddly familiar way slowly creeps in. After enough time is spent with the work (or the press release is perused) realization dawns: these are portraits painted over Skype, the online video tool that has forever changed how we communicate with each other.

“I spend a fair bit of time on the road, and also I live in the middle of Scotland, so it’s difficult to find sitters up there sometimes,” Kopp explained. Painting via Skype, using a far-flung network of friends as subjects, only seemed natural. “It’s a chance for me to connect with people,” he said. Kopp’s first Skype painting was of Indian-American jewelry designer Waris Ahluwalia; several portraits of Ahluwalia are on display in a room on Lehmann Maupin’s second floor.

The portraits are painted from live Skype chats rather than photographs or screengrabs. The presence of a living, breathing model is important for the artist, even over the Internet: “I need the other to contribute themselves as much as possible,” Kopp said. A video recording of one sitting shows Kopp and Ahluwalia chatting, blasting music, and pulling practical jokes with the computer camera as the session goes on (each painting requires two to three hours of sitting). Photographer Ryan McGinley, another of Kopp’s subjects, told ARTINFO that sitting for Kopp “was like a therapy session.”

Kopp works to replicate as closely as possible the image he sees on the computer screen — hence the blocky abstraction, due to Skype’s pixelization. “There’s an immediacy to the picture, which makes it a lot easier, because you’re not distracted by too much detail,” he said. The colors of the portraits also reflect the digital context: several of the portrait subjects are illuminated only by the cold, blue light of a laptop display.

In his portraits, Kopp hopes to combine a “super old-fashioned medium” like oil painting with something “very, very contemporary.” Still, Skype is not exactly new — the video conferencing software was introduced in 2006 — and its use has spread far beyond global-trotting cultural circles. “Yesterday, I Skyped my mom just for the exhibition opening. It’s so much more immediate than a phone call or anything else,” Kopp said. “It’s really like science fiction is now.”

Hollywood star Kirsten Dunst was recently spotted searching for her missing cat with the help of her actor-boyfriend Garrett Hedlund. Dunst, 29, was joined by Hedlund as she cycled around her neighbourhood in Toluca Lake, California, pasting ‘Lost Cat’ posters on trees and lamp-posts in a bid to
find out her pet, the Daily Express reported. Dunst describes little Tazzy as grey/white and specifies that it is not wearing a collar. She also offers an unspecified reward for whoever manages to find the cat.

Kirsten Dunst claims her life has remained normal despite her career. Although the 'Melancholia' star - who first shot to fame in 'Interview With The Vampire' at the age of 12 - suffered with depression issues in the past, she wouldn't change her upbringing and believes her parents did the right thing in letting her become an actress.

She said: "My parents did a really good job with me. I was a very extrovert kid and it felt normal to me to act. I've never been a prima donna so I never had problems. I always went to regular schools - I always had my seat at the cafeteria when I came back from acting and I never felt like an alien in my life because of what I did.

"My mum wasn't my manager but she was always with me on set. She would bring the pasta machine and make home-made pasta wherever we went. My mum was way more laid back than my dad, so I had a good balance."

Kirsten - who is thought to be dating Garrett Hedlund - also revealed her career occurred by accident when people recommended she take part in commercials because she was such a "happy child". She added: "My mother told me that when I was born she just knew I would be an actress. Every time we'd go to the grocery store, everyone would come up to her and say, 'Your daughter is so animated, she's such a happy child, she has such a light. You should put her in commercials.' My mum thought, 'Ok we'll try acting and put away some money for college'. I booked my first commercial and that was it."

Kirsten Dunst publicly accepted her new romance by kissing her rumoured beau, ‘On the Road’ co-star Garrett Hedlund, at a film festival. The duo was seen at a star-studded party at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, reports people.

The couple arrived together at a dinner bash Monday for her upcoming movie ‘The Bachelorette’.
They kissed and hugged, and also grooved with fellow guests, including actors Will Ferrell, Justin Long and Rashida Jones.

"Kirsten and Garrett have been spending time together since the holidays. They were friends on the set of `On the Road`, and now they`ve grown closer. They spent Christmas together and he feels very strongly about her," said a source.

Kirsten Dunst loves being surprised in her relationships. The 'Melancholia' actress - who has previously dated stars including Hollywood hunk Jake Gyllenhaal and Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell - claims she doesn't care what a guy does for a living as long as he makes her laugh and is honest.

She said: "When it comes to dating someone, I don't care what you do. Just as long as you make me laugh, you're a good person, you surprise me and we're honest with each other."The 29-year-old actress also believes it is important to retain some independence while in a relationship or the romance is likely to turn sour. She said: "It's important to have your own life. As soon as you give up too much of yourself it just turns bad."

Kirsten also admitted that as she gets older she prefers to be friends with someone before dating them because she can't rely on "instant chemistry" to help form a long lasting relationship. She told Live magazine: "My experience is that as you get older you try to pick a partner who you're friends with. It's hard to find balance and that's not going to come with the 'instant chemistry' kind of people."
