From the field to the needle continued - dyeing

OK, are you ready for this, we’ve got 10 minutes before I need to go back downstairs and turn the hob off. This post is huge so take a deep breath right now and make sure you’re sitting comfortably – you might even have grown a beard by the time you get to the end!

First up… get the pan on the stove

Then, gather together the ingredients

Not forgetting the actual fleece

I’m going to dye 200g, so onto the scales it goes

Next the fleece needs to soak in water

probably for longer than I leave it in there.

and, of course, being wool, it doesn’t want to go into the water, so a bit of gentle encouragement is called for

(sexy hand, or what?)

Back to the ingredients. First read the destructions (and then ignore then, usually)

and weigh out the dye – 4g for 200g fleece

and 12g of fixing agent (ammonium sulphate – I think, I’ll have to check when I go back downstairs in a sec))

Pop the fixing agent in the water and then dilute the dye with hot water

Add fibre protection – 4ml for 200g fibre

And finally, chuck in the squeezed out, but still damp, fleece

make sure it all gets under the water

and cook for 30 minutes

I don’t know whether you can see in that last picture, but the fleece is already turning different shades of turquoise – the lens kept steaming up, though.

Right, my 30 minutes are up, so I’ll pop downstairs and turn the heat off.

Then, after CSI, I will rinse the fibre, so I’ll see you after 10pm.

Olga and Her husband, Kevin, are the brains behind K & O jewellery. Together, they make individually designed and handmade jewellery at their home in Greater Manchester, working hard to create pieces that stand out and will draw attention when worn. And, honestly, I think you’ll agree that this small sample is great. There’s plenty more over in the shop, so whizz over there and take a look.

Cards with a Difference

The name says it all, really. If you are looking for a card with a difference you should try this fab shop on Folksy. Tanya can can personalise any card and add any verse you wish to the inside of a greeting card. Further more, your wish is, apparently, her command !

March Hares Special Report

I’ve been listing with the Folksy listing club since 1st June 2010, though I have to admit that some months have gone a little bit astray.

However, so far this month, I think I’m keeping up. There are lots of new faces in the March Hares and I wanted to share with you some of the new-to-me names so that you could see what fantastic delights are in store for you when you pop over there to get a Mother’s Day pressie – or any pressie for that matter!

I’m going to start the ball rolling with Sketchstitch, a little shop of original paintings, drawings, cards and so much more. Here you will find quirky, cute, original work at very affordable prices. With a background in printed textiles, Yvonne likes to work in mixed media including gouache, fabric, papers, ink and pencil. She works from imagination creating a variety of characters and imagery and I LOVE everything in her shop.

So if you’ve never been to Folksy, now is a good time to start. Here are just a few of the delights awaiting you in Yvonne’s little shop. All the pictures are live, so I’ve made it even easier for you to pop over there and bag yourself an original piece of work without breaking the bank.

The nerve wracking spin drying stage

Next instalment coming right up…

So, I took a smaller piece off the fleece and here it is languishing in the sink

Then I put it in an old pillow case – I swear blind that this case contains fibre and not kittens – honest!

Then it was into the washing machine. Can you see what I have to contend with? What a mess and it’s not all mine. Anyway, I could just about reach. Set the washer to SPIN, not wash as per last time (doh) and waited.

And the moment of truth – are the kittens still alive? No, no, I mean is the fibre felted?

SUCCESS

Right, now we let it dry and then we’ll set about dying it in the morning.

After removing the fleece (and washing the walls down) this is what remained in the bath

So the fleece is now in the sink – yes, that was SINK, not sick! Please try your best not to get too offended by the fashionable bathroom fittings

not too bad, I thought.

OK, next in with the clean water – this the proof

10 seconds later

But what’s that speck in the bottom right?, I hear you cry…are you ready for this?

Now, I suppose it’s time to repeat the process.

OK, some of you may have noticed that I'm spinning my own yarn now, but have you ever wondered how the yarn gets from the sheep to your living room?

This is a short history of one particular BFL whole fleece that arrived yesterday.

First the fleece is picked over for poo etc (well, the powers that be call it vegetable matter, but let's be honest, they mean poo!)

Here's the whole fleece, weighing about 2kg - head at the top of the picture (I think)

Next it needs a bath, oh boy, does it need a bath?

So it goes into the stunningly up-to-date pink (yuk) bath and becomes this primordial mess.

It's going to stay there for 24 hours so hubby won't be overly pleased with the pervading sheep smell in our bedroom - Tough!

I'll be back tomorrow with the next stages - what's the betting it's raining cats and dogs so I won't be able to dry it properly?

My new work space...the story so far

Hi, all. Yesterday I was a very naughty girl. I went to Staples to buy a new desk chair and came out with a new all-in-one PC as well! Oops. Oh, and a new wireless printer . Oh and 4 boxes of ink. That'll teach Hubby to make less than savoury remarks on Facebook about my digestive system!

At this point I'd like to stop and thank my little brother for coming to my defence...aww he does love me, really.

Anyway, back to the PC...

Mark (wonderful Hubby, kiss, kiss) has decided, after 23 years of living with me, that he cannot stand my mess any longer. He has tried really hard - I'd have blown a gasket a long time ago, I mean the place really IS untidy.

Here's a little taster of the currently shared study AFTER I have started tidying up!

Believe me, this is the study on a good day! Just look at my work room...

But, I've been clearing it up for weeks and weeks and when we bought Christian a new computer for his birthday (with the help of my wonderful Auntie Maureen) I thought I might be able to use that for my work.

So,when shopping for a chair yesterday, I heard a little voice in my ear telling me that the old PC won't start, won't stop, won't play music right, won't keep going, freezes, etc., you get the picture? No, it wasn't my inner voice, it was my daughter, Joanna!

Anyway, she prevailed and I came away with this lovely PC - something I'd never even heard of. All the workings are in the monitor and everything else is wireless. Theoretically, I can get Freeview, but I can't (not bothered), but the biggest fun is that it is touch screen - cool, or what?

I'm still tidying and sorting the new registered office of The Little Bead Box (The Dressing Room, off the Bedroom, 2 Eccles Close etc.), but look at the difference - I need a medal. Mark says he'll pay ANYTHING and DO anything to get me out of the study - YAH

Look, you can see the desk!!!!! AND a bit of floor...

Folksy Friday: 16.07.10 - Lucite Flowers...and then some!

For anyone who's been on Mars this week and doesn't know already, I took delivery of 5400 Lucite flowers last Thursday afternoon. I was so excited, though I must admit that I was a little LESS excited after sorting them all out!

The BIG DAY dawns and my beautiful, longed for Lucite flowers arrive

Work In progress - No eating at the dining table for a couple of days (didn't go down too well with Hubby)

2 days in and there are NOWHERE NEAR enough bags considering that amount of blood sweat and tears that went into sorting them out.

It was worth it, though, to see my first 10 bags of Button Flowers disappear un under 2 hours!

To date, I've sold my Lucite flowers to 8 different designers:-

Christian's Birthday at the Weekend

Wow, it was only yesterday that I had him, at 32 weeks, by emergency section, after developing Pre-Eclampsia. Now I'm taking pictures of his 11th birthday bash, and he's gone off on the bus to "big school" this morning for his induction day.

Folksy Friday - 02.07.10: Some of the shops visited by Mish73

Dear fellow Folksters (and anyone else daft enough to read these ramblings),

The following shops have all got one thing in common, well, actually they've got lots of things in common, but the one thing that connects them all, as far as this post is concerned, is the fact they have have all sold items to Mish73.

But who is Mish73, I hear you cry?

As far as I can work out, Mish73 is just a normal gal, just like anyone else, and you can keep up to date with her exploits by following her blog, The Crafty Learner.

However, she does have one important thing that makes her a bit different - (well, I'm sure she has many, but the one I'm interested in is this: she is a MASSIVE supporter of UK crafts and has shown this by buying 129 items from 60 folksy shops in just 6 weeks. (I'm sure this figure is out of date, but I'd daren't ask for an update - I might faint!)

This post isn't about Mish73, herself, more about the shops she has chosen to buy from, mine included.

I have broken them down into 5 sections, and though I was hoping to feature the actual items bought, I find that this is far too complicated for a hot an humid Thursday afternoon/dank and gloomy Friday morning. So, I will pick a favourite of mine from each of the shops that answered my thread on the folksy forum. Thank goodness only 27 replied!!

The end of a (mini) era - June Loons: LAST DAY

Well, we made it. The June Loons Listing Club has ended. This blog is late , of course, but I'm working on the principle is "better late, than never".

Has the June Loons Listing Club worked for me?

You can bet your life, it has!

Wow, what an experience. Six weeks ago I decided to let my shop limp off into the sunset, which it was well on the way to doing, anyway. I hadn’t sold much, and I certainly hadn’t made much money.

For some reason I wondered about the forum and decided to get on and say hello as a last ditch attempt. I’m not really sure why this happened, but it did.

The difference in my sales has been staggering - but let’s take a closer look at what’s actually happened:

· I’ve promoted the shop and met some really wonderful people along the way.

· I’ve seen some gorgeous items (and bought quite a few, too – shush, don’t tell Hubby).

· I’ve had a wonderful time, and I’ve sold 100 items in June through Folksy – all thanks to the June Loons Listing Club.

· I’ve been challenged

· AND, I’ve been supported every step of the way. I’m never going to be able to make a living out of it, but I’m having the time of my life and keeping busy, to boot. This is actually more important to me and my family.

· I get out of bed with a spring in my step and rush downstairs to list every morning, never once thinking, “Oh, I can’t be bothered, today”.

Oh, yes, the June Loons has worked for me, and then some…July Jesters, here I come!

A treat just for me...because I'm worth it!

Folksy folk will know what I was worried about yesterday - I don't want to share with anyone else.

I feel like I aged 10 years in a couple of hours, and I already have the heart of a person 24 years older than myself, according to Flora.

Now the palpations have calmed down a bit I decided to treat myself to something lovely.

I don't normally buy jewellery, being able to make it myself, but I absolutely fell in love with these ear-rings when they were listed yesterday, so I've gone made and bought them!

I'd like to say THANK-YOU to Mary Elliot Jewellery for cheering me up this morning.

I've added a link to the picture - but you won't be able to buy them, they're all mine now - you'd better hope Mary lists another pair if you love them too!

On the chicken front...

My timid Welsummer, Holly, roosted with the Pekins last night and they were all still alive this morning, so things are definitely looking up.

I'm off to get a nice new gate for the enclosure this morning, so I'm all excited and life is cool.

Folksy Friday: 25th June - Chickens

As I said, my chicken coop flooded last week. Fortunately, the hens don’t use it, preferring the lovely new, “handmade in the next village” coop I bought them. The original one was really for a bit of shelter and was a cheap import. However, flooding is flooding, and the suppliers very graciously agreed to a full refund after me having sent them LOADS of detailed pics of the water running down the inside walls!

Then I got some new hens, which are housed in the dodgy coop at the moment and I got to thinking about water and chickens etc.

Yesterday’s entry featured some lovely water-themed pieces from some wonderful Folksy sellers, and today I’m carrying on the general theme with a feature on chickens.

Yes, chickens! On Folksy, yes!

When I started looking for chickens on Folksy, I didn’t really expect to find any – how wrong can you be?

First up is Melisa Moody with her shop, Sugarplum Kawaii: next comes Alison Deegan with her detailed lino cut print, which can be found in her shop, Hand-printed by A. Deegan: following nicely on is Connie Yates, Konnie Kapow, with her fabulous Chicken note cards (a pack of which I’ve just bought!)

And last, but by no means least is my absolute favourite…The Beach Hutchy from LittleHutchys

That’s all folksy, or should I say “Folksy folks”?

Water, water, everywhere continued…

When the chicken coop flooded last week I got to thinking about water – lots of it!

Here are the results of my musings…

These lovely pieces are from Charlotte Hupfield Ceramics, Gimme that Thing and Diomo Glass.

So far, we’ve not had any rain to speak of, so the new hens are at least dry. It’s looking a bit dubious today – keep your fingers crossed.

Of course, I noticed it was raining as soon as I published this comment!
