Shawn is correct, the fan may appear to be clean on the outside but it is invariably blocked inside. Once the fan and heat sink are removed, open the fan itself up by removing the tiny screws that hold it together. Now fold back the fan from the vent part and gently lift the rotor blad from the spindle. Now clean the rotor blade with some cleaning product (I used a bathroom cleaner type spray). Leave to soak and then wash off and dry properly.

Now look inside the body of the fan at the vents and clean out all the dirt and dust with a can of compressed air. Do not get cleaning product near this part as it contains the magnetic conductor. A vacuum cleaner may not get in there as it is tiny.

Once the fan is all clean, put the dry rotor blade back on the spindle, fold the fan casing back down and reinsert those tiny screws.

You will now need to clean the old thermal paste off the heatsink and the CPU/Grapics Chip. Use a lint free cloth, and a soft plastic spudger and 90% alcohol solution to remove all the residue. DO NOT use any metal tool to scrape off the muck as you must not scratch the heatsink pads or CPU/Graphics Chip. Any scratches on the heatsink will reduce its ability to disipate the heat.

Once the Heatsink pads/CPU/Graphics chips are all nice and clean, you need to apply some decent thermal paste (eg arctic 5 or MX-2). Apply only a small quantity like size of a small peppercorn to the middle of both the CPU chip and Graphics chip. This will spread evenly when the heatsink is reattached to the board covering the surface of each of those 2 chips sufficiently. If you apply too much paste it will go all over the processor and board which will prevent efficient heat transfer and possibly cause failure of the chips and surrounding components.

It is an easy job but dont rush it or start without the necessary tools/products mentioned above.

My VPC-EC idles at 29 and never seems to go above 60 having carried out this procedure. The fan is very quiet, only really noticeable between 50 and 60 degrees.

Good luck.

Thanks for the procedure. I found my blockage was mostly on the interior side of the heat sink. It is really hard to get to and clean thoroughly since it's covered by the fan shroud. You can inspect it with a flashlight. Make sure to get this area clean as the dust on the blades probably has minimal impact.

Andrew, maybe you're battery is run down. Let it charge a bit before restarting. I've had that problem with my old laptop battery that was close to death.

After disassembly, I cleaned the fan with a vacuum cleaner. Then I fixed all the parts back. But the laptop won't turn on, the power buttons blinks every 2 seconds after attempted to switch on the laptop. I've redisassemble and checked everything inside it is screwed back into each position for 3 times now. Same problem occurs. Anyone knows as to why this happen?
