Conference Edition

So I had to go to Vegas this week for a safety conference. Because if you didn't know already, I am a safety nerd and that is what I do for work.

It was hot in Vegas this week, but if you attend any type of conferences you know that they run the AC at a brisk 62 degrees (or something close) and you loose the feeling in your toes because you are wearing sandal because it is 104 degrees.

Needless to say, dressing for this conference was a bit challenging for me. A lot of the attendees dressed really casually (jeans, shorts, t-shirts), but that is not me and I had "networking" and "face time" events to fit in during the day as well. I opted for comfortable, cool and still somewhat office attire. I ended up in sone variety of dress an cardigan every day.

Monday and Wednesday were my favorites this week. Thursday was half meetings/half travel day so I went more for comfort for the flight home.

The pictures were a challenge as I had crappy lighting in my room and I wasn't up for trying to find some other place to snap them. Sometimes they were an after thought - hence the wrinkles in Tuesday's dress - I had finished the day and started to change when I remembered I needed a picture.

I missed Friday because I was brain dead and didn't take a picture.

Well. I am a bit late and a bit light on this post, but I still wanted to do it. Last week I was all gung-ho to get a picture all 5 days, then I ended up working out at one of our facilities which means jeans. And I don't like pictures of me in jeans and work shirts, so I didn't take any pictures. I did manage to start and end the week with a picture, though.

I made a new friend, the adorable oskarsmomma, on Instagram a few weeks ago and she does this fun link up on Fridays and I am going to join in this week.

It is called Curvy Girl Fashion Friday, and she post pictures of her cute outfits from the week. Since I am not very good at taking pictures of my outfits everyday during a week, I am going to use a few outfits from the last couple of weeks and make an effort next week to take some more pictures.

Apparently I wear a lot of dresses. Which isn't really true, because I don't wear dresses very often. Maybe that is why I take pictures in dresses. Anyway, the weather has started warming up here, so dresses are a pretty good choice.

I also got a new 'do last night, which you can see in the last pic. I had Ashley, my lovely stylist, go a little shorter on the cut then style it up for me because I was meeting some friends for drinks after my appointment. Last night after my appointment:

I really like the "up" style, but I wasn't so sure about doing it on my own and everyday, but most the folks at work today were nice about it so we will see about keeping it "up".

The Tooth Fairy Strikes Again

My baby girl is growing up way too fast.

Now a kindergartener, she reads, writes, spells, does math, ties her shoes and so much more. Granted she could tie her shoes and read a little before kindergarten, but it all seems like so much more, especially with the end of the school year approaching.

She is also losing teeth. Lots of teeth. Last night she lost her 4th tooth in 5 months. I was pretty excited for her when she showed me that her 2 bottom teeth were starting to get loose back in December. A couple of her friends in 1st grade had lost some teeth and she was pretty excited about the tooth fairy.

Then a week later one of those teeth was suddenly was loose enough for me to pull out, so I pulled it. And she was thrilled. It didn't hurt and didn't bleed much which made it much easier on both of us.

We decided to make a pretty big deal about the toot fairy. Marly has her own fairy named Pixie and she left a note with her coins. (I need to find that note because I will do something similar when Bubba loses his first tooth.) And Pixie, the Tooth Fairy, left 2 "big coins" (half dollars) that were hit. We went with half dollars because I think that is what my parents left and it is easier to convince the kiddos to put them in the piggy bank instead of spending them because they are "special".

We weren't really ready for the tooth fairy to visit because I didn't think her tooth was that loose, but I managed to scrounge up a handful of half dollars by going through my old piggy bank that sits on Peanut's dresser.

Less than a month later, she was complaining about her other bottom tooth hurting and being lose and we just told her to leave it alone. Low and behold 2 nights later at dinner, she bit into her sandwich, got a funny look on her face, reached in her mouth and pulled out her own tooth. Again, it was all good because it didn't hurt and there was very little bleeding. The tooth fairy came again and left 2 more "big coins" that were put in the piggy bank.

Follow that up with a call I get from Hubby while I am on a work trip the first week of March. He tells me that Peanut has lost yet another tooth (#3 for those who have lost count) and it fell out at school.

Peanut gets on the phone and when I ask her about it, she tells me that she was swinging on the monkey bars with her library book in her both and the the book flew out of her mouth, taking her tooth with it. A little confused, I had to have her repeat the story again. I could not make this stuff up if I tried.

She found the tooth in the bark and took it to the school nurse who gave her a little treasure box to bring it home in. Her top two teeth were barely wiggly when I left for my trip and now she is missing one and the other is slightly wigglier and Peanut is 2 half dollars richer.

Then last night. When I picked the kiddos up from school, the first thing out of Peanut's mouth is that her loose tooth hurts. You would think by now that I would know that means it is ready too come out, but I had just checked it a night or two before and it was still pretty well in.

After we get home and settled, she started complaining about it again and I tell her I will check it after dinner. She continued to whine about it so I asked her if she wanted me to pull it out. She walked over, opened her mouth and I pulled it. I honestly didn't think it was going to come out, but sure enough, there it was in my fingers.

Peanut was thrilled and started dancing around. I told her to go rinse her mouth because this one surprised me with the bleeding.She rinsed and rinsed and rinsed and it wouldn't stop, so we held a wet paper towel on it until it quit. I was kind of bothered by how much it bled, but it didn't phase the kid one bit.

She had a solid 1/4 inch gap between her front upper teeth to start with (which I loved), then she lost one tooth and now the other. She now has a VERY large gap in the front of her mouth which is going to make a few things a little harder. Like eating some foods and saying some words.

Her bottom two teeth have started coming in and I hope the top two come in, at least a little, before she loses any more.

I haven't written a real post in months. Months. I am not even sure any cares because it has been so long.

I opened up the dash board and there were drafts for posts from early December through last months. Drafts for Bubba's 3rd Birthday, Christmas, our snow day, the kids first attempts at skiing, Peanut's birthday, Travels with Coffee Mug and more. I may try and go back and write those. I may just try and move forward.

For a while there I was having that "to blog or not to blog" debate in my head. I am still not really sure where I stand on it. I am thinking I will give it another shot and see if I can actually post on a semi-regular basis.

I have opened up the computer to write about the million things I have floating around in my brain...Bubba potty training himself at 2.5, our family trip to Oregon, Thanksgiving, Bubba's 3rd birthday, getting ready for Christmas, Peanut losing her firts tooth...and I realized that it has been a month since I last posted and longer than that since I really "wrote" anything.

And then the thoughts of giving up the blog start swirling. Do I just give it? Who?how many people really read and would care? What could I do to really push the blog forward? Do I really want to be a full time blogger? The answer is I don't know. So for now, I will keep sporadically posting and trying to document those moments that mean so much to me and go from there.

Reading: T he Witching Hour by Ann Rice. I have read it before, but I love to pull it out this time of year and read it again. There are 3 books in the series and the first is my favorite.

Listening To: Skyfall by Adele. Loved the movie, love the song.

Hoping: I don't eat too much on Thanksgiving. I doubt it, though. Thanksgiving with my in-laws is always a feast and the food is almost as good as the company and I indulge in both.

Eating: Awesome fudge from Karma, my sister-in-laws store.

Watching on TV: Try to write while laughing at Colbert.

Enjoying: Thanksgiving vacation and some time away from work. I love my job, but sometimes it gets a little stressful so a break is good.

Dreading: The pile of email waiting for me when I get back to work.

Wearing: PJ's because it is 1:13 am and I should be in bed.

Inspired by: My mother-in-law. We looked through some of her scrapbooks and now I want to get home and work on mine.

Excited About: Seeing family tomorrow at Thanksgiving dinner. A new baby, grandparents, cousins and more.

Craving: Hubby's cherry pie. It is my favorite and we will be cutting into it tomorrow after turkey!

Our Bubba is a talker. I don't remember at what age he started, but whenever it was, he hasn't slowed down since. He is at that questioning stage where he asks why and what ALL. THE. TIME. but he is so dang cute when he asks. He has this way of tipping his head slightly and scrunching up his nose when he asks me for the 17th time if what I am drinking is lemalade.

"You drinking lemalade?"

"Yes, Bubba, I am drinking lemonade."

"I like lemalade?"

"Yes, Bubba. You like lemalade."

"I have some lemalade, please."

"Sure, Bubba. Just a minute."

"You drinking lemalade?"

"Yes, Bubba,"

"I like lemalade?"

"Yes, Bubba,"

"You're lemalade all gone?"

"Yes, Bubba. My lemonade is all gone."

"I drink my lemalade all gone?"

This goes on. And on. And on. Until he finishes his cup of of lemonade and is distracted by something else.

He is constantly spouting crazy things that make me and Hubby laugh. I wish I were better about writing them down, but if I were, this post would be three times longer.

Indulging In: Mini Peanut Butter Cups and Diet Coke. I blame Halloween.

Loving the Color: Red. An oldie but goodie I come back to this time of year.

Drinking: AM – ALL the COFFEE, Mid-Day – Diet Coke, PM – Wine, wine, wine

Eating: Edamame and orange salad

Watching on TV: Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl. I still love my Vampire Diaries, but I found PLL and LOVE it. And Gossip Girl is finishing up I must see how it ends.

Dreaming of: A new pair of fall leather boots to wear with skirts.

Dreading: All the whining. And all the drama of a certain kindergartner. I don’t think I will survive the teen years if this is any indication of things to come.

Saying: "Quit hitting/picking on/wrestling/teasing your brother/sister!"

Wearing: All the sweaters and scarves! I love fall and an excuse to wear cozy sweaters and colorful fabric swathed around my neck.

Looking for: a better way to manage my temper with the kindergartner and her defiance. Other than more wine.

Excited About:Halloween and trick-or-treating with the kids. Their excitement is my excitement and they are JACKED about their costumes and CANDY.

Making: A few last Halloween decorations for around the house.

Feeling: Exhausted. Lots of stress at work and lots of kid drama at home.

Where I Rage About Poor Service, Again

I must attract poor service, because last year I wrote about the crappy experience we had with Pottery Barn and a doll, and now this.

About 6 weeks ago I asked the kiddos what they wanted to be for Halloween so I could get on the ball and get their costumes made or ordered or combination of the two. Neither kid had any idea so we Googled kids Halloween costumes and started looking at pictures. The minute saw this:

she was done. She made up her mind and didn't even want to entertain the thought of being something else.

Bubba, who wants to do what ever his Sissy does, chose this costume:

I was okay with the choices because they were age appropriate (some of the girls costumes were not) and the were fairly cheap.

Done and done.

I started looking at local places for costumes and there are the usual chain stores, but the they were definitely cheaper online so I found a couple of sites and signed up for newsletters for sales.

Last week a deal showed up that was too good to be true - 20% off and $4.99 shipping. SOLD!

I got online during my lunch hour and started on my order. Well, the $4.99 shipping wasn't going to get the costumes here in time for a party on Saturday, so I paid a little more to have them here by Wednesday to be on the safe side and finished my order. I got my order confirmation email and then my shipping confirmation email. All was good.

Well, Wednesday came and went and no costumes so I looked at the tracking info and they were going to be here Thursday. I was okay with that. Then I noticed at the bottom of the shipping email the 2 costumes were listed as 1 order, but as 2 different shipping orders and only 1 had shipped.

I sorta freaked out and called the company customer service number after 30 minutes of trying to find it on their website. I gave the customer service rep my order number and she pulls it up and tells me the Pink Bat Girl costume is unavailable and I lost it.

I was able to place in my cart, order and pay for - including expedited shipping - an item that was unavailable with no indication that it was low quantity or unavailable. Then I get a confirmation that my order has been placed, then shipped with no notice that I am not getting part of said order.

I DON'T THINK SO. (picture a 5'2" version of the She-Hulk appearing)

I didn't get any email or other notice that part of my order would NEVER arrive. That is not cool with me and I let her know it. She apologized for the inconvenience and said she could refund the costume cost. I told her that the inconvenience was I know have a 5.5 year old who has a party in 2 days and no costume, specifically the costume she has been telling her friends about for weeks. She again tells me she will refund the costume cost and I inform her she will refund the costume cost and all my shipping and end the call by telling her I will be contacting the company with a complaint about their system.

I then proceed to call every Target, Wal-Mart and K-Mart in the Valley and none of them have this costume. I get online and find that is is unavailable on most of the costume and party websites. As a list ditch effort I check Amazon.

AND THERE IT IS. (picture little angles singing hallelujah while dancing around my head)

The right size and half price and on Prime.

Thanks the baby Jesus for Amazon and Amazon Prime.

I got that bad boy ordered, paid $3.99 for overnight and I am watching the tracking like a hawk. It is scheduled to be at my house when I get home.

Crisis averted.

You might be asking why I didn't order it from Amazon in the first place? Well, is was more expensive at the time I ordered it, and I am cheap. That's why.

Anyway, I will be sharing with the original costume company my thoughts and opinions on my experience. I am not calling them out here because I want to give them a chance to explain. I will keep you posted on how it goes.

How I Handled the First Day of Kindergarten

I think we all managed to survive the first day of Kindergarten.

Some of us fared better than others.

Peanut rocked, of course.
I could barely keep my shit together.
Hubby was cool as a cucumber as always.
Bubba was unfazed.

Actually, it was a really great day for us. Peanut started Kindergarten, and that is one of those milestones that we as parents strive for. Basically, I kept my shit well enough together for the last 5 years to get my kid to the point where she is independent enough to go off to school without me. And she was excited and ready. No tears, no fear or apprehension - she was just ready. And I was sad and proud.

I am sad because I mourn the baby that Peanut was. I am sad that she is growing up faster than I am ready for. I am sad because she was the one who made me a mama and she needed me to teach her things. And she is the one who taught me so much ~ not only how to be a parent, but how to be her mama. Now she needs a different kind of teacher.

I am also so very proud of her. I celebrate the amazing person that she is becoming everyday. She is smart, so smart and so ready to be learning everything she can at school. I am so excited to share in all of her new experiences, starting with this one.

The first day of kindergarten is a venerable right of passage that signals the end of babyhood and bestows a new identity on all who enter. For the next 15 + years she will identify herself by her position on the educational ladder: "Hi, my name is Peanut and I'm in kindergarten ... I'm in 4th grade ... I am a freshman, a senior, a graduate student ..."

Well, today was the day.

The first day of Kindergarten.

And since my heart has exploded in a million pieces and I can barely keep it together. I am going to post a great poem about the first day of school that I saw on Zoo Keeper Jess's Instagram. (I also found a million post containing it, but no author.)

The Places You'll Go ~ Kindergarten

My Dear Peanut,

The right words escape me now, as they always do when I want to write or talk about something that affects my heart so much.

Today I went with you to your Kindergarten Orientation and tomorrow is your first day. The excitement and joy you have for school makes my heart swell with pride, but also makes me sigh with a little bit of sadness that you ARE ready to grow up and go to school.

You are so eager to be part of a “real” class at a “real” school as you have been referring to it since we started getting ready for Kindergarten. You are more than ready to start learning “big kid things” and you have been practicing your writing all summer.

I did catch glimpses that my little girl was not quite so big today, too. It melted my heart that you reached up to hold my hand as we walked into your classroom and you saw all the other kids and parents. And how you slid a little closer to lean on me when talking with your teacher.

What an amazing adventure you are beginning and I am so lucky to be your mama and be able to tag along for the ride. I am in awe every day or you (and your brother) – how much you learn and grow in the hours I am away from you while at work.

I know you have an absolutely amazing future ahead of you and it starts tomorrow. Peanut, take life by horns, take advantage of every opportunity you can, take chances sometimes, but most importantly ~ enjoy the ride.

I love you and I am so proud of you. Today and every day.

Time With My Girl

My baby girl is starting Kindergarten in 2 weeks.

Kindergarten.

2 weeks.

::cue crazy emotional, big ugly cry fest.::

Because, y'all -

KINDERGARTEN!

2 WEEKS!

So, to cerebrate/forget the inevitable/use up some vacation/most importantly ~ spend some fun time with my girl, I took the day off from workand Peanut and I headed to the water park.

Now, I am not a fan of wearing a swinsuit. Ever. Especially in public and in front of a boatload of other people, but I would do anything for my girl. Including wearing a swimsuit in public.

We got there right as the park opened and we were the first ones in, which meant I was able to score great shaded chairs by the kiddie pool and Peanut was the first to go down the kiddie slide.

We spent the majority of the day floating the lazy river, but to mix it up, we would hang in the wave pool and laugh as we were thrown around by the big waves. I took every precaution to keep my already damaged skin protected and LOVED the hat my dear friend Fabiola gave me.

We ended the day with a swirled ice cream in the shade before going to pick Bubba up from school and heading home. Both of us were beat, but neither of us could quit smiling. to quote my Peanut and Disney's Tangled "Best. Day. Ever."

Driving home from picking the kids up from school, I ask Peanut why her teacher told me she was being a bad listener, which is unusual for her . I got no response.

I asked if she was tired.

No.

If she was upset about somenthing.

No.

I again asked her why she chose to no listen to her teacher.

"Becuase!" she pouted.

"Because is not answer."

Quips my 2.5 year old Bubba in his Most. Serious Voice. Ever.

Future DH for the Seattle Mariners

Ever since playing with this baseball tee and pitching machine at a kiddo birthday party, Hubby has wanted it for ~~himself~~ the kids.

We finally bought it last weekend and set it up at my parents house.

Bubba is apparently a natural as this was just one of many hits.

I am an Auntie!!!

Technically for the 3rd time because I have an awesome niece and nephew from Hubby's brother's family, but my baby brother and his lovely wife just had their first baby, Tyler James.

And it is different this time because my brother is a DAD now.

And new baby Tyler is amazing.

And I am his Auntie.

I wish they lived closer or at least it was easier to get to NYC from here because I can't tell you how much I want to love on that squishy baby.

I GOTTA figure how to get back to NYC soon so I can love on him.

Oh, wait, I didn't tell you about the amazing weekend trip I took to NYC for my awesome sister-in-laws baby shower so I could deliver this adorable diaper cake in person?

Monkey lovie blanket as a topper. So cute. Tied with a fabric ribbon from the AWESOME sheets, blankets and toys my mom made for the baby.

Well, maybe I will get around to finishing that post. Why? It was an awesome trip. I love New York, especially Brooklyn where they live. The baby shower was great. I did lots of sight-seeing and walking. And I took lots of pictures that you should see.

So Much More

There is so much more I ~~want~~ need to write about here, but it is tough stuff and I am struggling to get the words out.

I haven't been able to write here in awhile. I have the time and the topics to write about, but I just don't. Can't. A combo of both.

I want to come back here and write and post cute pictures and share the good, the bad and the ugly, I am just struggling with it for lots or reasons, most of which I hope to write about. Some day.

For now, I want to brag about my most amazing Peanut.

Peanut turned 5 in February. She is very much a girly girl and has long, long girly hair. Up until December, when she moved to the 5's class at school, any mention of cutting her hair instantly brought on a dramatic and emphatic NO! Even trimming her hair was a challenge.

Sometime after changing classes, turning 5 and starting the discussions of kindergarten, she began to ease up on the hair. She eventually agreed that she would let me take her to get a big girl haircut before school started in the fall. She was actually excited about it. We talked about how she was lucky to have such nice hair and that if she was willing to cut it short, she might have enough hair that she could donate it for kids who don't have hair.

Then in early may, invitations came out from the school that they were having a "graduation" for the kids that would be heading to kindergarten in the fall. Peanut was SO excited. So excited about graduation and school and summer and swimming that she decided she wanted her hair after graduation. So I made the appointment with my wonderful stylist to have it done.

First we had graduation with her long hair.

The next day it was off to the salon where she showed Karyssa how short she wanted it. Karyssa braided it up as required and then did it. She cut off all my baby girls hair. I was so proud of Peanut ~ no tears or drama, just excitement.

Done! And super cute. She has always wanted curly hair so she asked Karyssa to do it and she was more than happy to oblige.

When were done, we went and celebrated with ice cream at Cold Stone and I saw the beginnings of pink eye. My cute girl with short curly hair and a puffy eye.

Washed and dried and ready for bed. Her looks much better after 2 doses of drops. Thank goodness for weekend clinics.

When it was all done, she cut off over 12 inches of hair un-braided that measured between 11 and 12 inches braided.

She was excited to send it to "the kids who need hair at Lots of Love because she has pretty hair and some one would like her hair."

So, yeah there is much more I could write about and should write about here. Deep and heavy and tough stuff. But stuff like this, my Peanut and Bubba doing things that amaze me, that is what I live and love so I choose to write about it instead.

I lied about my age to get my first tattoo, which I now hate and want to cover up with something new.
I am a night owl and routinely stay up past midnight, even though I get up anywhere from 5:30 6:00 am everyday.
Some days I don't drink a drop of water, but I drink at least 2 cups of coffee everyday.
I can't live without Soft Lips chapstick in Cherry.
I competed on the Women's Mining Team in college.
Yo Gabba Gabba creeps me out and both my kids hate it.

I am pretty flexible about most stuff with the kids, but I am stickler for bedtimes and we stick to them 99% of the time.

Is it better to get married when you’re younger or wait until you’re older? Not sure what the definition of younger or older is but I would lean toward the older side. I was 27. I think it give a person the chance to find out who they are as an individual before committing to be part of a team.
Earrings, Bracelets/Watch or Necklace – which one is always on, no matter what? Watch. I have 7-8 and even though they are all at different times (set ahead so I won't be late) and I usually use my phone to see what time it is, I never leave the house with out one.
The job you never want to have? Any job where I would have tell a perent they lost a child. Not because I don'[t think it is a good job, I just know I am not strong enough to do it. I admaire the love and strength those people have and the comfort they bring to those families.
Your Favorite Charity? Tough one because we give to a few - the local Rescue Mission, local Food Bank, Women's and Children's Alliance, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and in the past Susan G Koman

The hardest period in your life? 98-99 - I had done horribly in college the year before, was living at home not getting along with my parents and then one of my dearest friends passed away from leukemia at 20.

Tennis Shoes or High Heels – and the what are the favorite pair? Out of the 2 choices, tennis shoes, but I love flip flops. Favorite pair of tennis shoes - white converse
