And her two in-depth reports provide a disturbing view of a territory some now call a “prison” under the rule of Sharia law.

We missed these reports when they first aired on CBC’s flagship news program, The National, but we saw them Wednesday night when they aired again. They’re highly recommended.

Have you heard of it? Facebook?

Well, we have this page over there, you see, and up until recently, it was mainly a translator station for this blog, dumbly repeating everything we published.

But now, we’re curating a slightly different flavor of public media content on our Facebook page. There’s all the stuff you find here, and we’re sharing other things we find throughout the day.

Here’s the thing: Graham and I are busy people, and while we only have a small amount of time to compose posts each day, we’re actually discovering a lot more public media content that we want to share. So what we’re doing on Facebook is simply hitting the share button for good stuff when we don’t have time to write a post about it.

Should we put that stuff here, too? That’s a good question. This is kind of a wonky issue, but what we find is that Wordpress (the blogging software we use) is designed for an older kind of blogging that involves writing text, assembling photos and links, laying everything out, hitting the publish button.

The new kind of blogging is what you do on Facebook when you share something you like: you enter the URL, Facebook grabs the content for you and you can publish it instantly, with or without comment. Posterous does something like this, too. There’s a place for both kinds of blogging. The problem is when the mechanics get in the way of sharing.

Well enough shoptalk. The bottom line is this: we have TONS of excellent public media content to share, and while there all kinds of factors that prevent us from sharing more of it, Facebook’s easy platform takes care of one factor, and the result: you’ll find even more public media content on our Facebook page.

Over and out, Mediavores.

On this 40th anniversary of the Moon landing, NPR has released an exclusive story this morning about the video of the landing.

It’s a great story with a sad ending, and yet, maybe it’s not quite the end. After three years of searching for tapes of the original footage of the Apollo 11 moonwalk, NASA video specialists say the tapes were probably destroyed.

Unbelievable, yet true, apparently. As they explain in Nell Greenfieldboyce’s report, NASA had launched satellites that were spitting out so much data, that NASA faced a shortage of tapes on which to store it.

And so, NASA withdrew about 40,000 boxes of tapes from the archives. And erased them. And that’s probably what happened to the original tapes of one of the most important moments in the history of humankind.

Now some good news: technicians took the existing footage from film libraries around the world, and cleaned it up. And today, NASA is releasing it. It looks good.

Listen to the story and watch the video.

For Mediavores who can’t turn away from Supreme Court confirmation hearings, here’s a couple of items from the Wayback Machine–also known as the NPR archives. The hearings for Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and John Roberts were separated by a mere six months (January 2006 for Alito, September 2005 for Roberts). So far, race has been the dominant hot-button issue during the Sotomayor hearings. Abortion, civil rights, and privacy were front and center when Alito and Roberts each faced the Senators. And, per usual, the hearings provided a forum for the Democrats and Republicans to make many a political speech. We wonder if Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) will warn his colleagues against “politicizing the judiciary” during the Sotomayor hearings as he did during the Roberts hearings.

Listen to NPR’s audio highlights of the opening day confirmation hearings for Alito here, and for Roberts here.

Listen live at 12pm ET/9am PT

A few years ago, we were eating at a rather chic restaurant in Chicago, and the server brought to our table a plate that wasn’t listed on the tasting menu. It was foie gras, which is hardly an unusual dish for a restaurant. But the server, with a smile, made a point of telling us that the item, which he didn’t identify, was “compliments of the house.”

For awhile, selling foie gras on a restaurant menu was illegal in Chicago. That’s no longer the case. But the debate about foie gras, and the practice of overfeeding geese or ducks to produce an enlarged liver, is far from over.

Chicago Tribune reporter Mark Caro has written The Foie Gras Wars, about the battle over the delicacy in Chicago, and the wider debate about the treatment of animals.

He’s Steve Scher’s guest on KUOW’s Weekday, and Chef John Sundstrom of Lark in Seattle, will join the discussion.

Listen live or on-demand.

Marketplace: Wal-Mart has angered competing retailers. Not by undercutting prices, but by coming out in support of some of the Obama Administration’s health care reform proposals. And the National Retail Federation is pushing back.

The World: Jeb Sharp guest hosts today. She’ll speak with the BBC’s Martin Patience about increased troop levels for American forces in Afghanistan, and what appears to be a corresponding increase in casualties among US and international forces there.

All Things Considered: Madeleine Brand co-hosts with Robert Siegel. Given Brand’s experience with Day-to-Day at NPR West, she is well positioned for today’s stories on California’s political and economic struggles. After Ina Jaffe delivers a report on some of the challenges of governing the nation’s largest state, Brand speaks with an economist about how California’s budget crisis might affect other states.

Plenty of convenience stores selling soda, ketchup, unhealthy frozen burritos and chips; but where’s the fruit and vegetables?

The special irony of the Central Valley is that it produces the fruits and vegetables that most of the rest of eat. It’s all shipped away.

But The Kitchen Sisters highlight a few efforts to change this. In their piece “Breadbasket Blues” (it aired on Morning Edition last Friday), they look at a program that offers free fruits and vegetables to local residents, as well as another that “plants” farm stands in places like school campuses and encourages new farmer’s markets. Part of this story is also about wiser use of public spaces – not just for community gardens, which is a great idea – but also as spaces for relaxation and exercise.

The hearings begin today and we expect tons of coverage, with NPR News in the lead.

NPR will offer stations live coverage of the hearings from beginning to end. We don’t expect a large number of stations to offer this option, but you can access it easily online.

NPR is also offering evening summaries of the day’s events, with Linda Wertheimer and Nina Totenberg. These air live at 7pm ET/4pm PT, although some stations may delay the shows, particularly in the West.

And on Tuesday and Wednesday, Neal Conan will host what NPR calls Special Coverage of the hearings at 3pm ET/12pm PT. This is part of the Talk of the Nation block, but some stations that don’t normally carry the show may choose to take the special coverage.

And, of course, this is in addition to the coverage on Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

There’s a toxic legacy from years of mining, and pollution seeps into the environment.

The original mine owners went out of business a long time ago, and the Environmental Protection Agency has been trying to create incentives to get the new owners to clean them up. Now, the EPA is offering “brownfield” grants to mine owners for the first time, and once the owners have cleaned up the mines, they’re shielded from future litigation.
