If you’re reading this, you’re probably curious about period underwear – either you’re thinking of trying it, or you already own some and want to make them last. Either way, you’re in the right place.

They only save you money if you take proper care of them. Unlike disposables that you just toss, period underwear needs a little TLC to keep it performing its best. The good news? It’s not complicated. After using them for years and testing dozens of brands, I’ve perfected a simple care routine that keeps mine in great shape.

Ways to Wash, Dry, & Maintain Period Underwear

I absolutely love period underwear. They’ve been one of my favorite zero-waste swaps, but here’s the thing: they’re not just for eco-warriors. Even if sustainability isn’t your top priority, period underwear offers serious benefits. They’re more comfortable than pads, less fuss than cups, and can save you hundreds of dollars over time.

How Many Pairs Do You Really Need?

When I first started with period underwear, this was my biggest question. Through trial and error (and some leaks I’d rather forget), here’s what I’ve learned:

For light to moderate flows:

Absolute minimum: 2 pairs (but you’ll be doing laundry constantly)

Comfortable amount: 3-4 pairs (this is my sweet spot)

Ideal for convenience: 5-6 pairs

For heavy flows:

You’ll want at least 5 pairs

7-10 pairs if you don’t want to wash daily

Pro tip: Different brands have different absorbencies. Some of my Modibodi pairs can last 12-24 hours, while thinner styles need changing every 4-6 hours. Factor this in when deciding how many you need.

Getting the Most Out of Your Period Underwear

The beauty of period underwear is its simplicity. Unlike cups that have a learning curve or pads that can shift around, these work exactly like regular underwear – just put them on and go about your day.

But there are some usage tips I’ve picked up:

Change frequency depends on your flow and the underwear’s absorbency. Start by changing as often as you would with pads, then adjust as you learn their limits.

Layer protection on heavy days. I sometimes use a menstrual disc with my underwear for extra security.

Choose the right style – some are better for overnight, others for workouts.

Also Read: How to Clean Your Reusable Period Products Between Uses

How Do You Wash Period Underwear?

This is where most people get nervous, but don’t worry – it’s easier than you think. The golden rule: always rinse them as soon as possible after wearing. Letting blood dry makes stains set and can lead to odors over time. Here’s my two-step washing method to wash period underwear:

Step 1: Immediate Rinse

I do this right in my bathtub to contain any mess. There are two ways I approach it:

The Slow Water Method

Let cool water run gently over the underwear

Use my hands to massage out the blood

Catch the water in a bucket to reuse for plants (yes, really!)

Repeat until water runs clear

The Washboard Method

Use a small washboard basin I got secondhand

Add a little cool water and scrub gently

This uses less water than the first method

Why cool water? Hot water can actually set protein-based stains (like blood), making them harder to remove later.

Step 2: Hand and Machine Washing

After rinsing, I toss them in with my regular laundry. Some people prefer to wash them separately, but since I’ve already removed most of the blood, I haven’t had issues with this method.

Key MAchine washing tips:

Always use cold water

Skip fabric softener (it can reduce absorbency)

A mild, eco-friendly detergent works best

Washing periods underwear by hand?

If you prefer hand washing, simply soak them in cold water, use a mild detergent, gently scrub, and rinse until the water runs clear.

How to Dry Period Underwear Quickly: The Make-or-break Step

This is where many people accidentally ruin their period underwear. Heat is the enemy – it breaks down the absorbent layers and elastic.

Here’s how to dry them properly:

Outdoor Drying (Best Option)

Sunlight naturally disinfects and helps wash period stains

The fresh air keeps them smelling great

Indoor Drying Options

Hanging over a shower rod

Using a foldable drying rack

Hanging from hangers on a curtain rod

My favorite trick? Wash them in a mesh delicates bag. This makes it easy to pull them all out of the washer at once before transferring other clothes to the dryer.

Storage and Maintenance

Storing period underwear is simple – just fold them and keep them with your regular underwear. I keep mine in a designated basket under my sink for easy access during my cycle.

But here’s my secret weapon: the bi-annual deep clean. Even with proper washing, minerals and residues can build up over time. Twice a year, I give all my period underwear a spa treatment:

Fill the bathtub with warm water

Add:

¼ cup washing soda

¼ cup borax

A squeeze of dish soap

¼ cup laundry detergent

Soak for 1-2 hours

Rinse thoroughly and wash as normal

This deep clean removes any lingering odors and keeps the fabric fresh. I do this with all my clothes, actually – it makes such a difference!

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with perfect care, you might run into these situations:

Persistent Odors

Try soaking in cold water with baking soda

Make sure they’re completely dry before storing

Decreased Absorbency

It might be due to detergent buildup – do a vinegar rinse

It could mean it’s time to replace them

Stains

Sun drying is nature’s bleach

Don’t stress – stains don’t affect performance

Need to remove period stains? A hydrogen peroxide soak can help

Can a Tampon Get Stuck?

One of the biggest tampon fears? “What if it gets lost inside me? or it gets stuck?” Let me put your mind at ease—it can’t.

I’ve heard people say, “My friend had to go to the doctor because their tampon got lost!” Nope. It wasn’t lost; it was stuck. There’s a difference.

For example, dropping your phone between the car seat. You might not be able to grab it right away, but you know exactly where it is. The same goes for tampons. The vagina isn’t a bottomless pit—it has an end. If a tampon gets pushed up too far (which is rare), it might sit near the fornix (the top of the vagina), but it’s still inside, not floating around your body.

Another common panic? Forgetting you already took out a tampon. Sometimes, people remove a tampon, toss it, and then freak out, thinking it’s still inside. But a tampon can only be in one of three places: your vagina, the trash, or the toilet. It’s not hiding somewhere else in your body—that’s just not how anatomy works.

The Tampon String Won’t Break

Another worry I hear? “What if the tampon string breaks?” Let’s test it out.

Grab a tampon, unwrap it, and pull on the string as hard as you can. Go ahead, really tug on it.

Did it break? Nope. Tampon strings are designed to handle way more force than your body could ever apply. Even if you’re pulling with both hands, it stays intact. So don’t stress—your tampon won’t get stuck because the string won’t snap.

The Confusing “L” and “S” Tampon Sizing

Tampon sizing can be super misleading. You’d think “L” means large and “S” means small, right? Nope. In the tampon world:

“L” means light (for a light menstrual flow).

“S” means super (for a heavy menstrual flow).

So if you pick up an “S” thinking it’s small, surprise! You’ve just grabbed the super absorbency one instead. Meanwhile, the actual small or light-flow tampon is labeled “L.” If you’re ever unsure, double-check the box before buying.

Pro Tip for Bike Riders: Tuck the Tampon String

If you ride a bike, this trick is a game-changer: Tuck the tampon string inside your vagina.

As a mountain biker, it took me years to figure this out. When you’re sitting on a bike seat, the pressure can make the tampon string rub against your skin, which is uncomfortable (and annoying). Tucking it in fixes the problem instantly. No more chafing—just smooth, comfortable rides.

Don’t Flush Tampons

Some tampon brands claim their tampons are “flushable.” Don’t believe them.

Also Read: How to Clean Your Reusable Period Products

I learned this the hard way after dealing with one too many clogged toilets. Even if tampons break down eventually, they can still block pipes and mess up plumbing. The better option? Wrap it in toilet paper and toss it in the trash. Bonus: This also helps control odor.

Period tracking apps promise convenience, insight, and control over your menstrual cycle. With just a few taps, you can log symptoms, predict fertility windows, and stay on top of your reproductive health. It’s no surprise that millions of women rely on them daily. But what if these tools aren’t as safe as they seem?

Beneath the surface, there’s a hidden truth that most users don’t know: Many of these apps lack accuracy, aren’t regulated, and may be selling your health data. From unreliable cycle predictions to privacy breaches that expose your personal details, the risks are concerning.

Before you enter another symptom or trust an app to track your fertility, it’s important to understand what’s really happening. Let’s take a closer look at the dangers of period-tracking apps, how they use your data, and ways to protect your privacy.

Why We Use Period Tracking Apps?

Let’s be real – these period-tracking apps solve actual problems that women face every month. Most of us have been there:

Trying to remember when your last period started

Wondering if that cramp means Aunt Flo is coming to visit

Needing to track symptoms to discuss with your doctor

Trying to either get pregnant or avoid pregnancy

The most popular menstruapps? They’ve been downloaded over a million times each. That’s how mainstream and widely used these have become. It makes sense – who wants to carry around a paper calendar or diary when you’ve got your phone with you 24/7?

The Big Problem Nobody’s Talking About

Here’s what’s really scary, though: There’s absolutely no government agency or regulatory body checking these apps before they hit the market. Think about that for a second.

With medications, there’s the FDA making sure drugs are safe and effective before you can buy them. Medical devices go through rigorous testing. But these apps? Any developer can throw together a period tracker and put it out there without having to prove:

If their predictions are actually accurate

If their “medical advice” is legit

What they’re really doing with all your personal data

And get this: Studies have shown that most period-tracking apps contain flat-out wrong information. They use fancy medical terminology to sound official and scientific, but there’s often no actual research or evidence backing up what they’re telling you.

Why You Can’t Rely on Them for Birth Control

Here’s something crucial to understand. These apps are not accurate most of the time. Your menstrual cycle is incredibly complex. It’s not just some simple 28-day clockwork system. There are so many factors that can affect it:

Stress (good or bad)

Travel and time zone changes

Illness or infections

Medications you’re taking

Changes in diet or exercise

Even just random biological variations

Yet, these apps claim they can accurately predict your fertile window. Many women use them as their primary method of birth control, thinking they’re safe if the app says they’re not fertile. That’s like playing Russian roulette with your uterus.

The Real Shock: Your Privacy Is an Illusion

Now, let’s talk about what might be the most disturbing part of all this. Are period-tracking apps safe?

Back in December 2018, Privacy International conducted an investigation that revealed something terrifying: 61% of period-tracking apps immediately and automatically transfer all your data straight to Facebook.

We’re not just talking about your name or email address here. We’re talking about:

The exact dates of your period

How heavy your flow is

When you had sex (and whether you used protection)

Your moods and emotions

Any symptoms like cramps, bloating, or breast tenderness

In some cases, even diary-style entries about your most intimate experiences. Do period tracker apps sell your data? The scary truth is that many of them do.

How These Apps Are Making Money Off You

Let’s break down the business model here because it’s important to understand that every single detail you enter into these apps becomes a potential goldmine for advertisers:

Log that you’re having bad cramps – Here come the Advil and Midol ads.

Record that you’re feeling super emotional and PMSy – Get ready for chocolate and ice cream coupons.

Mark that you’re trying to conceive – Your feed will suddenly be full of prenatal vitamin promotions and fertility clinic ads.

The Maya App Example

One of the worst offenders is an app called Maya, which has over 5 million downloads on the Google Play Store. Privacy International’s investigation found some horrifying things:

The app starts sending data to Facebook the instant you open it

This happens before you even get a chance to accept the privacy policy

The information includes extremely sensitive details like your sexual activity and menstrual symptoms

This isn’t just questionable data practices – it’s a complete violation of user trust on a fundamental level.

Some Mensrtuapps Are Changing (But Not Enough)

After getting called out by Privacy International, some apps like Clue actually changed their practices. They stopped sharing data with Facebook and implemented better encryption. That’s progress, but here’s the thing:

These changes only happened after public exposure and backlash

Many apps still have vague, confusing privacy policies full of loopholes

There’s no guarantee that other apps aren’t selling your data in different ways

Better Alternatives Worth Considering

For iPhone users, Apple’s built-in Cycle Tracking feature (part of the Health app) is actually a much more secure option because:

Apple doesn’t rely on selling user data for profit

Health data is encrypted and stays on your device by default

It can integrate with other health metrics you track for more accurate predictions

For maximum privacy, some women are going back to old-school methods:

Using a paper journal or calendar

Basic note-taking apps with encryption

Simple reminder systems that don’t collect or store your data

How to Protect Yourself

If you do choose to keep using these apps, here are some precautions to take:

Never ever rely on them as your sole method of birth control

Operate under the assumption that anything you input could eventually become public

Carefully review privacy settings (though they’re often designed to be confusing)

Consider using a pseudonym and avoiding unnecessary personal details

Regularly check which apps have access to your health data and revoke permissions you’re not comfortable with

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, period-tracking apps can be useful tools – there’s no denying that. But they come with hidden costs that most users don’t even realize they’re paying. Your most private health information shouldn’t be treated like a commodity to be bought and sold to the highest bidder.

Until there are proper safeguards and regulations in place, we all need to be extremely cautious about what we share with these apps. Your data, your privacy, and your health are worth protecting.

Tracking your menstrual cycle doesn’t have to be complicated or involve expensive gadgets. In fact, you can track your period on paper with just a calendar and a pen. If you’re someone who wants to track your menstrual cycle easily on the calendar and avoid using apps, this straightforward, low-tech method might be exactly what you’re looking for.

In this article, I’ll share the simple method I use to track my period without an app, a method that respects my privacy and aligns with my love for simplicity. No apps, no complicated gadgets—just a simple, effective way to stay in tune with your body and its natural rhythms.

Why I Changed My Period Tracking Method – My Experience

I find this is an easy way to manage your cycle without an app

About a year and a half ago, I used to track my menstrual cycle. Back then, I was using a combination of methods: a period tracking app, OPK (ovulation predictor kit) strips, sometimes progesterone test strips, and occasionally a thermometer for basal body temperature tracking.

But I’ve since moved away from all of those methods to track your period without an app, and there are several important reasons why.

1. Embracing Simplicity

First and foremost, I’m a huge proponent of keeping things simple. There seems to be this growing idea, and I’ll even call it a temptation to complicate our health, our fertility, and our menstrual cycles.

Don’t get me wrong; these aspects of our bodies are incredibly complex. Our physiology is wonderfully intricate.

I truly believe we can approach complex systems in simple ways. This is the philosophy I bring to my yoga practice, my nutrition work, and now to how I track your menstrual cycle on paper.

2. Valuing My Privacy

Another significant factor in my decision is privacy. When I was using that period-tracking app, I didn’t think much about data security. But as more information has come to light about how our personal health data might be misused by period tracking apps. I’ve become increasingly uncomfortable with storing such intimate information digitally.

Now, I choose to keep my cycle tracking completely offline. My menstrual health information stays private, just between me and my notebook. In today’s digital age, there’s something reassuring about having this one aspect of my health exist entirely outside of any app or online platform.

3. Reducing Waste

The third reason involves sustainability. When I was using OPK strips and progesterone test strips, I became aware of how much waste they generated. Each strip comes in individual packaging, and they’re all packaged again in boxes. Not to mention they’re single-use items that you have to keep buying month after month.

Beyond the environmental impact, I realized these strips weren’t giving me any new information about my cycle. They were simply confirming what my body was already telling me: changes in cervical mucus, cycle length, luteal phase duration, and libido fluctuations. The strips became redundant, and the waste they created felt unnecessary when tracking the menstrual cycle on paper.

4. Resisting Unnecessary Consumerism

Finally, I’ve become more aware of how consumerism has entered the menstrual health space. There’s been a surge in interest about menstrual cycle health, but with that has come a flood of products claiming to be essential for tracking.

While some of these products are helpful, the marketing often creates the impression that we need all these gadgets and tests. That’s simply not true.

Our bodies give us the information we need if we learn to listen, which is why I prefer to track my period without an app.

My Current Tracking System for the Mentsrual Cycle

So what do I use now? The simplest solution possible for tracking the period is a paper calendar and a pen.

The Symbols I Use

I’ve developed a simple symbolic system that tells me everything I need to know at a glance when I track my menstrual cycle on paper:

Wave symbol (~): Indicates bleeding days

Square (□): Means I’m dry – no bleeding and no fertile cervical mucus

Triangle (∆): Shows when I notice fertile cervical mucus (either seeing it or feeling it)

Question mark (?): Marks when I expect my next period to start

Numbers (1, 2, 3…): Indicate what day of my cycle I’m on

A Sample Tracking Month

Let me walk you through how this works in practice when you track your period without an app. I use the calendar to keep track of my menstrual cycle. Say my period starts on August 3rd:

Day 1 (August 3): I write “1” and draw a wave to show that bleeding started

Days 2-4: Continue numbering each day with waves (still bleeding)

Day 5: Bleeding has stopped. No cervical mucus was noticed. Mark “5” with a square

Days 6-8: Still dry – continue with squares

Day 9: Notice slippery cervical mucus – switch to triangle symbol

Days 10-12: Continue with triangles as mucus persists

Day 13: Cervical mucus changes – back to dry. Mark with square

Days 14-15: Still dry

At this point, after three consecutive dry days following fertile mucus, I assume ovulation occurred around day 12. I then count forward my typical luteal phase length (about 14 days) and put question marks around the expected period start date (say, August 27).

As the days approach, if my period starts on day 27, I cross out the question mark and mark “1” with a wave. If it’s late, I adjust accordingly.

Why This Method Works So Well

After seven years of tracking my cycle through various methods, courses I’ve taken, books I’ve read, and countless podcasts I’ve listened to – this is the system that makes the most sense to me for how to track your menstrual cycle on paper. Here’s why:

It’s completely private – no digital footprint, no data sharing concerns
Reduces waste – no disposable test strips or packaging
Saves money – no recurring costs for apps or supplies
Encourages body literacy – makes me more attuned to my natural signs
Flexible – I can adapt it as my cycle changes over time
Simple – no complicated gadgets or steep learning curves

Final Thoughts

I know this method might not be for everyone. Some people love their apps or find test strips helpful, and that’s completely valid. But if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by all the tracking options out there, or if privacy concerns have been on your mind, I encourage you to try tracking your period without an app.

Our bodies are amazing at giving us signals – we just need to learn how to read them. You might be surprised at how much you can understand about your cycle without any special gadgets or expensive tests when you track your menstrual cycle on paper.

Ever looked at the calendar and wondered, Why is my period late again? You’re not alone! Many women and girls experience this frustration, expecting their period to arrive on the exact same date each month—only to be met with inconsistency.

The good news? Your body isn’t broken, and there’s a simple way to track your cycle without the stress.

Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle

It is not about the date. Think of your menstrual cycle like the moon phases. The full moon doesn’t appear on the same date each month, yet it follows a predictable rhythm.

Your period works the same way! Instead of fixating on a specific date, focus on learning your cycle length. The number of days from the first day of one period to the first day of the next.

The Easiest Way to Track: A Period Calendar

Want a simple, old-school method? You can track your period with a calendar, paper, or a notebook. For example, grab a notebook or planner and follow these steps:

Write down the months of the year on one side and the dates on the other.

Mark an “X” on the first day of bleeding each cycle.

Repeat this for at least two to three months.

Count the days between the first day of one period and the first day of the next. This is your cycle length!

Some women have 24-day cycles, others 28, and some even 30 or more. Once you know your cycle length, predicting your next period becomes much easier.

A Smarter Alternative: Period Tracker Apps

If writing things down isn’t your style, let technology do the work!

Period tracker apps can help you log your cycle, estimate your next period, and even predict ovulation (super helpful if you’re trying to conceive or avoid pregnancy).

Just input your period start date, and the app will handle the rest.

When Tracking Alone Isn’t Enough

While these methods work well for most, sometimes irregularities signal a deeper issue. If your cycle is:

Shorter than 24 days,

Longer than 44 days, or

Affected by conditions like PCOS, hormonal imbalances, or excessive stress…

… then it’s time to consult a gynecologist. Tracking can provide helpful insights, but a medical professional can guide you toward solutions if your cycles remain unpredictable.

Final Thoughts

Tracking your period isn’t about pinning down an exact date—it’s about understanding your body’s natural rhythm. Whether you prefer a good old-fashioned notebook or a high-tech app, the key is to feel empowered, not anxious. And if something feels off, don’t hesitate to seek expert advice. Your cycle is unique to you; embrace it, track it, and take control of your health with confidence!

We’re getting into the nitty-gritty of something every reusable period product user needs to know: how to keep your menstrual cups, cloth pads, and period panties clean between uses. Not that half-hearted rinse we’ve all guiltily done when tired, but the proper cleaning that keeps them fresh, functional, and lasting way longer.

When I started my periods, I had no idea what I was doing. Boil my cup? Soak my underwear? Avoid fabric softener? It felt like learning a secret society’s handshake. But after years of trial and error (and some very avoidable mistakes), I’ve figured out a system that works without turning period care into a part-time job.

How to Clean Your Reusable Period Products

So whether you’re new to reusables or just looking to up your cleaning game, I’m breaking down exactly what I do from my daily shower routine to that magic peroxide trick that saved my favorite cup from permanent staining. No fluff, just the real-deal methods that actually work for my busy, imperfect life.

Ready to give your period products the care they deserve? Let’s do this.

How to Clean a Menstrual Cup?

Most menstrual cups I‘ve tried are made of medical-grade silicone, so their care instructions are pretty similar. The best way to keep them fresh and hygienic? A good old-fashioned boil.

Drop your cup into a pot of boiling water for about 10 minutes.

This kills bacteria and keeps it sanitized—super important since it sits inside your body for hours at a time.

I personally boil mine at the start and end of each cycle for a deep clean. But let’s be real—boiling it every single day during my period would be way too much work. Instead, I keep it simple with a daily wash using a menstrual cup cleanser.

Also Read: Pads, Tampons, or Cups? Let’s Break Down Your Best Options

My daily routine is quick and hassle-free:

Take the cup out in the shower.

Rinse it thoroughly with water.

Wash it with a menstrual cup soap.

Reinsert it.

The whole process takes less than a minute, and just like that, everything stays fresh and clean.

Dealing with Stains On Mentraul Cup

Even with regular cleaning, your cup might develop those stubborn, lingering stains that don’t budge with soap or boiling. But don’t worry—there’s a magic fix: a hydrogen peroxide soak.

At the end of each cycle, mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 4 parts water in a plastic cup.

Drop your menstrual cup in and let it soak overnight.

By morning, it looks brand new—no stains, no weird discoloration.

Keeping your menstrual cup clean doesn’t have to be a chore. With a little routine care and the occasional deep clean, it’ll stay fresh, stain-free, and ready for your next cycle!

How to Wash Reusable Cloth Pads and Period Panties

Reusable period underwear and cloth pads are game-changers—but only if you care for them properly! The secret? Presoaking. Skip this step, and you might end up with stains or lingering odors. Here’s my tried-and-true method for keeping them fresh:

1. Rinse First

The moment I take them off, I:

Rinse under cold water (in the sink or tub) to remove as much blood as possible.
Avoid hot water—it can set stains instead of lifting them!

2. Soak in a Cleaning Solution

Next, I prep a simple soak:

Fill a bucket with 1-2 gallons of water.
Add a little mild detergent (the kind for delicates).
Add a splash of hydrogen peroxide—it breaks down blood and fights odors.
Let them soak for at least an hour for a deep clean.

3. Wash on Delicate

Once they’re soaked and ready:

I toss them in the washing machine, but only with other period products (no mixing with regular laundry!).
Use the delicate cycle with cold water to protect the fabric.
No fabric softener! It coats the fibers and makes them less absorbent.

Also Read: 7 Period Hygiene Tips – How to Maintain Menstrual Hygiene

4. Air Dry

I always hang them to dry. But do not heat from the dryer can break down the elastic and shorten their lifespan.

With this routine, your reusable period products will stay clean and fresh and last as long as possible! Even with the best care, period panties and cloth pads won’t last forever. Over time, they may start holding onto smells or losing absorbency. When does that happen? Time for a replacement!

Dealing with your period can be messy, stressful, and downright inconvenient. But what if there were smarter, sneakier, and even slightly genius ways to make it all easier? Whether you’ve ever panicked over a leak, forgotten how long your tampon’s been in, or struggled to discreetly carry supplies, this article is packed with unexpected Period hacks that’ll change the way you handle your cycle.

No more awkward stains, embarrassing trash smells, or frantic bathroom stall struggles, just real, practical solutions that actually work. Ready to upgrade your period game? Let’s get into it.

10 Period Hacks That Work

Let’s get into the Period hacks. I’m going to explain them in super detail so you get every single tip.

1. WEAR BIKINI BOTTOMS AS UNDIES (GAME-CHANGER!)

This is a hack I have literally never seen anyone else talk about, but I recently started doing it, and it’s AMAZING

If you’re someone who always stains your underwear (or worse, your clothes) because leaks happen, this is for you.

Here’s why it works:

Swimsuit material is designed to dry fast – so if you bleed through, it won’t stay wet like cotton undies.

It’s way more absorbent than regular underwear, so leaks are less likely to seep through to your pants.

Plus, it doesn’t show lines under tight clothes, so it’s super discreet.

I’ve been doing this on my heaviest days, and it’s been a total lifesaver.

2. USE YOUR PHONE TO TRACK TAMPON TIME (SAFETY HACK!)

Leaving a tampon in too long is dangerous (like, really bad), but sometimes you forget when you put it in.

Here’s my foolproof trick:

After you change your tampon, open your phone and take a screenshot of the time.

Now you have a visual reminder of exactly when you need to change it next.

No more guessing or worrying!

Bonus tip: If you don’t want a bunch of screenshots, just text yourself the time so it’s in your messages.

3. EAT BLUEBERRIES TO SHORTEN YOUR PERIOD

This one is wild, but studies actually show that women who eat a lot of blueberries during their period tend to have shorter cycles.

Why?

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants that help reduce inflammation.

They also help with cramps (bonus!).

And they’re delicious, so why not?

I’ve been eating them every morning during my period, and I swear it helps.

4. SNEAK A TAMPON IN YOUR HAIR

I get so many DMs from girls asking, “How do I hide a tampon at school/work?” Here’s my favorite trick:

Take a tampon and wrap it into your hair (like a tiny bun or braid).

If you have long hair, no one will ever notice.

It’s perfect for when you don’t have pockets or a bag.

I’ve done this so many times, and it’s never failed me.

5. BAKING SODA IN YOUR TRASH CAN (ODOR HACK!)

If you change pads/tampons at home, your trash can can start to smell.

Here’s how to fix it:

Sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of the trash can.

It neutralizes odors instantly.

No more awkward smells in your bathroom!

I do this every time I empty the trash now.

6. THE DOUBLE-PAD TRICK

This Doule pad trick is amazing.

Here’s exactly how it works:

Lay one pad in your underwear like normal.

Take a second pad and place it right on top.

If the second pad has wings, fold them under so they don’t stick to you.

When you’re out and need to change it, just peel off the top pad.

The bottom one is still clean, so you don’t have to struggle in a stall.

I’ve seen this hack EVERYWHERE now. It makes me so happy that it’s helping so many girls!

7. USE A SOCK AS AN EMERGENCY PAD (DIY HACK!)

Another life-saving trick from my DIY pad. If you forgot your period pads at home and you’re somewhere where you can’t easily get new ones, this trick might save you.

Grab a clean sock (athletic ones work best).

Fold it lengthwise and place it in your underwear.

It’s not perfect, but it’ll save you in a pinch.

I’ve gotten so many messages from girls who used this at school or work when they were totally unprepared.

8. FLUSH THE TOILET TO COVER PAD CHANGES

If you’re in a public bathroom and don’t want anyone to hear you changing a pad,

Here’s what you do:

Flush the toilet (first for noise cover).

Quickly rip off the pad while it’s flushing.

Flush again to mask any extra noise.

Pro tip: Sometimes, I wait for someone else to flush if I’m in a busy bathroom.

9. MAKE YOUR OWN PAD WINGS WITH PANTY LINERS

Did you run out of winged pads? No problem:

Take two panty liners.

Stick them on the sides of a regular pad to create wings.

It’s not perfect, but it helps keep things in place.

10. USE CODE WORDS FOR PERIOD TALK

When you ask for a pad/tampon without being obvious? Use a code word with friends. Some favorites:

“Japan is attacking” (because of the red dot on their flag).

“Can I borrow your red pen?”

Periods are already kind of a mystery, but today we’re diving into the really weird stuff. Like, “science says men low-key avoid you on your period, but you’re suddenly extra into them” weird. “Your voice gets deeper, and now I’m questioning everything” weird.

I’ve been obsessively researching this because, apparently, this is my life now, and let me just say… our bodies are out here doing the most. If you’ve ever side-eyed your period and gone, “Why are you like this?”, this one’s for you.

List of Surprising Facts About Your Periods

1. Science Says You’re Less Attractive to Men on Your Period

Science says women are statistically less attractive to guys when they’re menstruating, and it’s not about looks. It’s biological.

Men might not consciously notice, but studies show they’re subtly less drawn to you during that time. Meanwhile, your hormones are doing the opposite, making you more aroused and craving affection.

It’s a weird mismatch: they’re less into you, but you’re extra into them. How unfair is that?

2. You Lose Way Less Blood Than You Think

The average period only sheds about 3 tablespoons of menstrual blood. Sounds manageable,

But when you add it up over a lifetime, it’s wild women have roughly 450 periods in their lives. That’s a lot of tampons, pads, and ruined underwear.

Also Read: The Fascinating Science of the Menstrual Cycle

This is a fun fact: You’ll spend about 10 years of your life menstruating.

3. Periods Start Earlier Now Than They Used To

Most girls get their first period around age 12, but back in the 1800s, the average age was 16 or 17. I think the reason is nutrition.

Better diets today mean that bodies develop faster. And if your cycle’s still irregular by 18, that’s totally normal. It takes time for everything to settle into a predictable rhythm.

4. Winter Periods Are the Worst

Ever notice your cramps feel extra brutal in the cold? Turns out that periods are often heavier and more painful in winter.

Maybe it’s the cold, maybe it’s seasonal mood swings; either way, summer periods are definitely the lesser evil.

5. Discharge Is Normal (And Kinda Gross)

Lots of you ask about discharge, so here’s the deal: It’s not just blood. Your body’s shedding the lining of your uterus, which makes things thicker.

It’s weird, but it’s part of the process.

6. Your Voice Changes on Your Period

Apparently, your voice gets slightly deeper during menstruation. I never noticed (probably because my voice is already all over the place), but studies back it up.

Maybe that’s why we sound extra dramatic when complaining about cramps.

7. PMS Can Make You More Aggressive

Ever snapped at your boyfriend for breathing too loud during PMS? There’s science behind it.

A study on female prison inmates found they were more violent on their periods.

8. Super Low Body Fat Stops Your Period

If your body fat drops below 8–12%, your period might vanish. Your body needs some fat to sustain a cycle, which is why extreme athletes or people with eating disorders often lose theirs.

Not a health goal, just a weird biological quirk.

1. Heat Is Your Best Friend

First up: heating pads. If you’re like me and get awful cramps, a heat source on your stomach is a game-changer.

I use this little microwaveable bean bag thing, but a hot water bottle or heated blanket works just as well.

The warmth helps relax your muscles, which tend to spasm during your period. Seriously, I can’t even explain how much better I feel with the heat.

2. Cover Your Butt (Literally)

This one’s a biggie wear long shirts, sweaters, or cardigans that cover your butt when you’re on your period.

I don’t know about you, but whenever I’m wearing a pad, I get so paranoid that everyone can see it through my leggings or yoga pants. I’ll literally be walking around thinking, “Why is everyone staring at my butt?!” even though they’re probably not.

It just gives you peace of mind, knowing no one can tell you are wearing a pad.

3. Find a Massage Buddy

Another lifesaver is having a friend who gives good massages. When it’s that time of the month, a little TLC goes a long way. Your back gets super tight, and a quick rubdown feels like heaven.

I remember in school, we used to do these “massage trains” at lunch where everyone massaged the person in front of them. If I ever saw one, I’d immediately join.

If you have a friend (or a partner) willing to give you a back rub during your period, keep them close.

4. A Healthy(ish) Snack for Cravings

Cravings during periods are normal. Having a snack that satisfies cravings without making you feel gross.

I like to eat sliced bananas with drizzled chocolate and a sprinkle of cereal.

It’s so simple, and you can even freeze it for a cold treat. (Fun fact: Cold foods are actually supposed to help with period discomfort!)

5. The Towel Trick

If you’re worried about leaks at night, put a towel on your bed. When you’re sleeping, you move around a lot, and sometimes, leaks happen.

Also Read: How to Care for Yourself on Your Period – Period Self Care

A towel is an easy way to make sure nothing gets on your sheets.

6. Code Names with Friends

This one’s just for fun. Mostly, girls have code names for their periods with their friends.

One of the funniest ones I’ve seen is “Japan is attacking—do you have supplies?” (Because, you know, the Japanese flag is a white background with a red dot.)

I think that’s hilarious and such a cute way to talk about it with your squad.

7. Keeping Your Pad Secure

Last but definitely not least, keep your pad in place. I recently discovered panty prop underwear, and it’s amazing. It’s designed to hold your pad securely so it doesn’t shift around, which is perfect if you’re active (like in gym class, dance, or sports).

A lot of girls tell me they don’t like tampons or are scared to use them, so this is a great alternative.

Plus, since it doesn’t have wings, it’s super subtle if you’re changing in a locker room. Just remember to change it every few hours like a regular pad!

By now, you’ve probably heard a lot of myths about periods, but somehow, they just keep popping up. These myths shape how we feel about our bodies, influence the choices we make, and sometimes even keep us from getting the care we need.

I’ve also heard all the myths. From “menstrual blood is dirty” to “you can’t get pregnant on your period,” these misconceptions aren’t just annoying; they can be downright dangerous. Because here’s the truth: Your period isn’t something to apologize for, hide, or misunderstand. It’s time we set the record straight, once and for all.

So, on this page, we’re clearing the air. We’re busting seven of the most stubborn period myths, backed by science, served with a side of real talk, and delivered in a way that (hopefully) makes you think.

Why Do Period Myths Matter?

Periods are a universal experience for menstruators, yet they remain one of the most misunderstood aspects of human biology. Despite advancements in science and healthcare, menstruation myths persist, often rooted in cultural taboos, outdated beliefs, or simply a lack of education.

These myths can have serious consequences, from perpetuating stigma to preventing individuals from seeking the care they need.

For centuries, menstruation has been shrouded in secrecy and shame. In many cultures, periods were and in some cases still are considered impure or unclean. This has led to harmful practices, such as excluding menstruators from social or religious activities or even isolating them during their cycles.

While the period positivity movement has made strides in breaking down these barriers, there’s still a long way to go.

Why is it important to bust these myths?

Because misinformation about periods can impact physical health, mental well-being, and even self-esteem. For example, believing that severe period pain is “normal” might prevent someone from seeking treatment for conditions like endometriosis.

Similarly, misconceptions about menstrual products can limit choices and create unnecessary discomfort.

Busting 7 Common Myths About Periods

In this article, we’ll tackle seven of the most common myths about periods, separating fact from fiction and empowering you with the knowledge you need to take control of your menstrual health. Let’s get started!

Myth 1: Is Menstrual Blood Dirty?

We’ve come a long way in speaking openly about periods, and the period positivity movement has gained significant traction. But let’s not forget that for thousands of years, menstruation was shrouded in silence, stigma, and shame. In many cultures, traditions, and religions, periods were labeled as impure, unclean, or even something to hide.

This outdated period myth isn’t just false. It’s harmful. Even today, many people are made to feel that their period is dirty, that it makes them unattractive or somehow “less than.” Some are still excluded from social events, religious spaces, or daily activities simply because they’re menstruating.

But here’s the incredible truth: Period blood isn’t just natural. It’s miraculous. Let’s break it down. When you menstruate, you’re not just shedding blood. You’re releasing parts of the uterine lining, the endometrium. This tissue is the very foundation that could nurture new life if pregnancy were to happen.

And that’s not all. Period blood contains beneficial bacteria from the vaginal canal and uterus tiny warriors that protect your pH balance, fight infections, and even help build a baby’s immune system during birth.

But the real showstopper? Period blood has stem cells. Yes, those stem cells, the ones with the power to transform into any cell in the body. Scientists are still unlocking their potential for groundbreaking medical treatments.

So, no, period blood isn’t “dirty.” It’s a powerhouse, a complex, life-sustaining fluid that deserves respect, not stigma. Consider this myth officially busted.

Myth 2: Menstrual Cycles Can Sync Up

Many people swear that their menstrual cycles sync up with those of friends, family, or colleagues, especially when living or working in close proximity. This phenomenon, often referred to as “menstrual synchrony,” has been widely discussed, but what does science say?

Researchers have studied this idea extensively, and the results are clear: There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that menstrual cycles sync up. While it’s possible for cycles to overlap occasionally due to the natural variation in cycle lengths, this is more likely a coincidence than a biological phenomenon.

On average, menstrual cycles range from 21 to 35 days, and over time, some overlap may occur purely by chance.

However, this doesn’t mean that cycles are synchronizing. Until proven otherwise, this myth remains busted.

Myth 3: The Menstrual Cycle Should Be 28 Days

The idea that a “normal” menstrual cycle is 28 days is deeply ingrained in our understanding of periods. Many birth control pills follow a 28-day cycle, reinforcing this belief. However, only about 16% of menstruators actually have a 28-day cycle.

In reality, menstrual cycle length varies widely. A cycle as short as 21 days or as long as 35 days is still considered normal. Even those with a 28-day cycle may experience fluctuations over their lifetime due to factors like stress, diet, or lifestyle changes.

Tracking your cycle and understanding your body’s patterns is far more important than aiming for an arbitrary 28-day standard.

This myth is busted. The key takeaway? Your menstrual cycle is unique to you.

Myth 4: Birth Control Can Regulate Your Period

Many people believe that birth control pills can regulate their menstrual cycle. While hormonal birth control can provide a predictable bleeding pattern, it’s important to understand how it works.

Birth control pills contain synthetic hormones that suppress your body’s natural hormonal fluctuations. During the active pills (the ones containing hormones), you won’t bleed.

Also Read: 8 Did You Know Facts About Your Period

The bleeding that occurs during the placebo or sugar pills is not a true period; it’s a withdrawal bleed caused by the sudden drop in hormones.

This means that birth control doesn’t regulate your natural cycle; it overrides it. Once you stop taking birth control, any irregular bleeding or cycle issues you had before will likely return.

So, the idea that birth control can regulate your period is a myth.

Myth 5: You Can’t Get Pregnant on Your Period

It’s a common belief that you can’t get pregnant while on your period. While the chances are low, it’s not impossible.

Sperm can survive in the body for up to five days. If you have a short menstrual cycle (closer to 21 days) and ovulate shortly after your period, there’s a possibility that sperm from intercourse during your period could fertilize an egg.

The bottom line? Your period is not a reliable form of contraception.

If you’re not planning to get pregnant, always use protection, regardless of where you are in your cycle. This myth is busted.

Myth 6: You Can’t Use Tampons or Menstrual Cups if You’re a Virgin

This common myth about periods stems from the misconception that using tampons, menstrual cups, or discs can affect virginity. The truth is, using menstrual products has nothing to do with virginity.

Virginity is a social construct, not a medical condition. The hymen, a thin membrane at the vaginal opening, can be stretched or torn by various activities, including sports, exercise, or even everyday movements. Its condition is not an indicator of sexual activity.

Your choice of menstrual product should be based on personal comfort and preference, not outdated beliefs about virginity. This myth is officially busted.

Myth 7: Period Pain is Normal

Many of us have been told that painful periods are just part of being a woman. While mild discomfort is common, severe or debilitating period pain is not normal and should not be ignored.

Conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease can cause extreme period pain. If your pain interferes with daily activities such as work, school, or social events, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider.

Ignoring severe pain can lead to undiagnosed conditions and long-term health issues. Don’t accept pain as a normal part of menstruation.
