This is custom vinylmation comissioned by Richard from United States. He runs at races and already has an impressive collection of medals hanging on walls. He also collects vinyl figures, one per each trophy. They look really cool together, what a great idea for extra motivation. Richard asked me to paint him wearing his team colours and logo on 3 inch vinylmation. I even modified Mickey’s feet to form actual running shoes. The rest was painted on top of the original figure. Portraits are tricky, but I agreed to give it a try and we are both happy with the end result.

Wish you all the best and even more gold medals!

Some of you may remember my USB design for Infectious/Mimobot : Unmasked design competition I submitted in 2010. I didn’t win then but the comments were very good and encouraging. Year after this event I was contacted by Mimoco.com, they liked my concept and would like to produce it.

So now here it is, ready for you to buy. The official premiere was on Macworld 1012 and the Einstein starts Mimoco’s newest series, “Legends of MIMOBOT” featuring their stylized take on icons, geniuses, and stars of the human race.

It comes in 3 different graphic versions and 6 capacities each to choose from 2GB to 64GB.

My proposal was Brainstein inspired by Einsteins bushy hair and his amazing brain, which was allegedly removed from body few hours after his death and was subject of scientific studies. For people with sensitive stomach who prefer to keep internal organs hidden, there is option with original grey hair. Both of them have second, more playful face, hidden under the plastic cup, inspired by iconic photo of Albert showing his tongue.

Third version re-imagines the iconic physicist as a record-spinning, techno beat-blasting DJ master sporting designer headphones. Emcee² Einstein MIMOBOT reflects the physicist’s other great passion: Music. Indeed, the man who gave us the Theory of Relativity was also quoted as saying, “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician.”

All three are official products licensed by The Hebrew University of Jerusalem who owns personality rights of this famous genius who stays on 7th. position on the Forbes list of top earning dead celebrities, after Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe.

This is the first custom engagement ring box I made this year. It was built for a gentleman from Los Angeles who found me by my previous works. It features my favourite character from Disney/Pixar movies – Wall-E. I always wanted to build him as a small, dog size version remote controlled via wifi with web camera and working hands so I could bring cookies from kitchen without living my desk. I even bought some components like Arduino board, 20 little servos and controllers, but after some experiments I realized that I need much more knowledge about electronics to even start. When I got the question about making small Wall-E as an engagement box, I couldn’t say NO. There is few toys on the market I could start with, but I wanted to make him from scratch. The big help was this Wall-E builders club and they reverse engineered the character to build the full scale working robot, some of them can be found on Youtube. They have all their plans published for free, just sign in, browse and learn.

They did amazing job, the plans are professionally drawn with all the dimensions and 3d views, what saved me countless hours in front of DVD trying to capture the images of the character from all angles. I still had to scale their drawings and prepare my own parts for laser cutting in styrene sheets. It was many of them, especially when making the tracks driving mechanism. To give you an idea, each of this 2 little parts on photo below was made of 59 separate pieces, assembled together and sanded.

This was the moment when I regretted that I didn’t buy this toy as a base platform. The only thing that kept me going, was the thought, that injection moulded parts would probably lack of some details and here, I could make what I needed.

The ring is resting on this little pillow, hidden inside. The small copper slider is made at the bottom so it can be pushed to reveal the surprise.

The best part was the painting stage. I could finally see it assembled and painting the rust is my favourite now. The basic colours were made with spray paints to get nice and even yellow colour or random dots on rusted areas where I used few shades of greys and browns. It was later refined with fine brushes and acrylics. It was great, but I had to be careful not to overdo it, so it doesn’t look too much like a trash. It will at the end hold the very expensive piece of jewelry.

I wish you guys all the best and long life together!

Custom Darth Vader dunny I made for the collector from Spain. He bought my provious Hellboy dunny on Ebay auction, he liked it and decided to commission me to make him another character. I am also Star Wars fan so agreed without hesitation.

This 3inch little guy was more demanding. The helmet was sculpted with epoxy putty and carefully sanded, polished and painted with 3 layers of super gloss varnish. At first I painted blue and white highlights with brushes to simulate reflections, but the effect wasn’t satisfying. I cleaned it and spray painted with flat black the whole figure and varnished only his helmet, belt and boots. The cape is made of melted plastic painted black and light saber made of plastic rod painted with Sharpie.

Another customized mini Lunartik in a cup of tea inspired by iconic photo of Audrey Hepburn from classic movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I used all parts of original toy to shape this figure. Saucer is a base again, inverted cup forms her hips and handle of cup was cut off and used as a tail of little cat sculpted to look like made of smaller lunartik. Lots of sculpting went to this piece but I wanted minimalistic look. At first, I planned to paint her black and white only, but later decided to add the skin color. I think it was a good call. I already have few ideas to customize this figure further, to create 2 other lady characters, I will probably cast this sculpture in resin and make 5 copies. If you are interested in buying one, you can send me an email on architecturalmodelmaker@gmail.com

Here is my take on very popular character among customizers – Hellboy. I made him using 3 inch dunny. I wanted to use all dunny’s features on this one and limit sculpting to minimum. I twisted the head by 180 degrees so cut-out horns appeared on his forehead, then glued both dunny’s ears on the head, first is used to form the cigar and second is hairs. The bump on dunnys face now acts as jacket’s collar. The only sculpted part is his stone hand. Here he is in front of his box, handmade of cardboard.

If you like him, you have the occasion to own him. I put him on sale on Ebay here so you can get it as a Christmas gift for yourself or your friend. 20% of the final price will go for Kiva.org , non-profit organization which provides microfinance to entrepreneurs in developing countries to create opportunity to help themselves and others. The rest 80% of final price will be transfered to kiva account and will be lend to people to support their needs. When they pay it back, it will be lend to others until this dollars are worth something… So go and place your bid, you may buy 2 Christmas gifts in the price of one

UPDATE: The auction ended at the price 105$, thanks for everybody who participated. The box was shipped next day and it is on its way to Spain.

80% of the final price gives roughly 80$, so it will give 3 loans to people from Kiva.org, 25 $ each. I already selected two:

First is Pasar Lontar Group which sells toys in small shop in Indonesia. They need the loan to expand their business and improve the standard of living of entire family. Since the money comes from sale of the toy, this was my first choice.

Second is Harapan 2 Group from Indonesia for Yusrati for stock to their general store.

Third will be selected in next few days. I will update this post to see if it made an impact I wanted.

I like this platform, its elements and shapes inspired me to few characters already, 2 more will be published here soon. I am very happy with this one. She keeps the cuteness of original figure, it is probably because the wig black eyes. The dress is made of melted and shaped plastic cap and the base is the saucer which comes with the figure. The legs are sculpted with sculpey.

I am thinking about making few figures like that for sale. If you are interested in a copy for you, drop the line on my email address : architecturalmodelmaker@gmail.com

My dunny version of Vitruvian Man originally sketched by Leonardo da Vinci showing ideal human proportions with geometry described by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius. Many artists used this iconic image and put all different robots or animals inside the circle, but I didn’t see dunny yet, so here it is pasted on the original poster.
