Boulder Coffee (South Wedge) Show 2-18-11

On Friday February 18, we will be doing a true Moho Collective show. Thats right, a music and art pairing that we are truly looking forward to. We are also very stoked to be sharing the stage with local musician Jay Schreiber who will be opening up the show with an hour of his original material, which we all love. His show is definitely one you don't want to miss! Thanks Jay!! We love you brother...

Will Nichols will be the local artist featured for the night. He will also be creating live while we perform....feel free to come up and pick his brain.... We are pumped to be working with him....
His art work will be all over the performing area....feel free during set breaks to come up on stage and take a closer look....some of his art might be for sale as well...you don't want miss the opportunity to take a piece of his work home.

So this has been a very busy year for us. We have only been a band for 18 months and in the last 12 months we have performed over 60 shows and currently have another 25 booked... as well as releasing a live album and coming up in late March we will be releasing our first studio album that we recorded at GFI Studios....soon after the studio album is released in March we will be releasing a 5 song jazz standards album that will show the softer side of the band....we are also in middle of booking a July tour down the east coast..... not to mention getting our merch. prepared and ordered, running all of the social media sites and purchasing a tour van.

So to say the least it's been a crazy busy year for us....but now the ground work has been laid and we are excited to get back to writing new material / booking shows and getting our music out there.

Moho Live Video Shoot

The Moho Collective has been working on a new album to be released next month as well as a new live video shot by 33 U Productions http://www.33uproductions.com/ ....we are just about done with the final mixes for the album and then its off to be pressed up and on sale. On Friday Sept. 24, 33 U Productions filmed us live at Boulder Coffee South Wedge for the night. They captured some great footage and are amazing to work with. Clay and Tommy do great work and we recommend them to everyone looking to get a video done....

As we approach October, Moho is gearing up for an eastcoast tour to VT and back in our new/used 15 pass tour van. Let me tell you its great to have a van that can hold all of us and all of our gear with ease. Check our webpage for locations and dates for that tour....we end it with a special show at Lovin Cup with guest pianist Willy O'Rielly ..... you dont want to misss this show....

The Moho Collective was invited to play the Honors House Art Gallery at FLCC (Finger Lakes Community College) for a new art release in October and we are stoked to be a part of it....

Utica Music and Arts Festival 2010

Greetings Moho-ians....we are currently in Utica playing at the Utica Music and Arts Festival. http://www.uticamusicfest.net/ We first want to thank Joe Sweet for putting this festival together....its a great festival!!! Thanks Joe...
Utica is a great town for music...the audiences are super supportive and love music....I know the picture doesn't show it but the Green Onion Pub (where we played friday night) was packed....no standing room left....we did our Moho thang and the audience gave us a warm welcome...thanks Green Onion Pub!!!
After the show we went back to our hotel which is also the festival center (Hotel Utica) and partied until 5am....nice...we met some great peeps....we slept for a few hours and then grabbed breakfast in the lobby with the other bands and hooked up for a quick chat with Teagan and the Tweeds outside and enjoyed a beautiful morning in the sun.....the Tweeds played the festival last night and are off to the Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse to rock out tonight....
At this point we are doin' the clean up and shower thing and then we are off to enjoy the festival and check the Saranac Brewery out for a tour.... Tonight we play at Nail Creek Brewery located in downtown Utica ...this venue is one of the great venues to play during this festival....we are stoked to play it and hope for a good response like last night.....

Moho has a tour van now...thanks to a good friend of ours who is selling his.....we bought a 15 passenger Ford Club Wagon Van....HUGE VAN....nice...and 2-tone so its easy to spot....

An update from the Moho family . . .

So much is happening! It seems like we only get a chance to blog when we're taking a small hiatus from our busy gigging schedule. For the next two weeks, Kurt is heading up into the north-east to play at a wedding in Vermont, visit some family in northern Mass., and co-write a musical in Boston. Meanwhile, Ryan and Justin will be holding it down in Rochester, playing some gigs, and continuing to grind the Moho gears full force until a slew of August shows once again occupies the Moho Calender. There is a lot to talk about, so we'll get right to it.

Empire Brew Fest - July 16, 2010

It seems like every time the Moho hits the road, we could write a novel about what goes down. Some totally insane things happened when we made our way to the Empire Brew Fest in Syracuse. As usual, the van broke down - but luckily it waited until we got there to do so. Thanks to the killer sound crew, we played a great set and got a fantastic sound board recording of our first 3 tunes before the batteries died in our recording device (seeing a pattern yet?) You can hear these three tunes on the mp3 player of our website (www.themohocollective.com). It wasn't long after our set that Kurt noticed his phone was missing - and between balancing the logistics of getting a broken van and a trailer full of gear back to ROC, plus finding a phone among a crowd of 5,000+ beer connoisseurs (read: drunk people), complete insanity ensued. We'll spare you the lengthy tale of how everything came together - and how Kurt's phone was obtained by a very uncooperative person (read: #@$%#@%!) - but we will say that we have some AMAZING friends who always seem to be there for us in such trying times!

Our loyal friends and fans Dave and Micheal Moffit and Cassey Rife were nice enough to tow the trailer home for us. Our pal Randy Ford let all five of the Moho crew pile into his mini-van for a lively trip back to the ROC, and our Syracusan trooper Westbrook Shortell was super helpful with the phone situation.

Sadly, the Beer Olympics at RBI in Hornell were canceled, so we had Saturday to recover while there were some non-Moho gigs to be played that night.

Boulder Music Fest - July 18, 2010

Sunday brought some beautiful weather upon us for a great time at the annual Boulder Music Festival. Both The Moho Collective and slow light were in full force, bringing their tasty sets to the South Wedge. The Moho gladly started the set off by feeding off of the grooves of the nearby Capoeira group (Brazilian marital arts/music/dance - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capoeira) that played in between bands. In fact, we had one of the berimbau players (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berimbau) join us for the intro of Wenindee.

We were super stoked to be given the opening slot for Buddhahood, and the remainder of the night involved mingling with the other musicians and vendors, some impromptu dancing, and of course tasty craft brews courtesy of Magic Hat.

As we mentioned in the last blog, this past weekend marked the arrival of Daniel Bennett, a great NYC based sax and flute player. We did two shows featuring Daniel, one on Grand Island, and one at Tournedos in Rochester. Daniel is a great player and fit nicely into the Moho sound. We look forward to getting out to Boston and NYC with Daniel, as well as hosting him in Rochester again! Spencerport Canal Days - July 25, 2010

After saying farewell well to Daniel, the next day brought us out to the Spencerport Canal Days. Boy do we wish we had recorded that set! The day turned out to be unassumingly great with fantastic weather, an awesome setting (we played on a gazebo right on the Erie Canal), another fantastic sound crew, and an exciting set with lots of great feedback from some new and old friends. We love being a part of these type of events where there is such a strong community vibe. Thanks to all of those involved! (Especially Porter for his contribution to the Wenindee intro).

Recent and future happenings . . .

So the last month or so has been extremely productive.
-We had another great Artist collaboration show with Gary McNulty at Boulder South Wedge (Pictures coming soon)
-We featured fantastic local trumpet player Dave Cavene (pictured at right) at a Lovin' Cup "Jazz Night" show
-We got tons of new merch including some rad shirts, stickers and pint glasses
-We toured the GFI studios where we will be recording our debut studio album in early September
-AND we've been working hard to continue to get fresh promo material together (Interview, Pictures, etc.).
All in all, this means tons of time spent with the Moho family - which is more than enough in return for all the hard work.
However, for the next week or so, we're continuing a short hiatus while Ryan and Jaime tour the country via Amtrak! We miss them dearly, as do their dogs, but the Moho gears are still grindin' and plenty is happenin' still.
For instance, as soon as Ryan and Jaimie get back the whole crew will be heading to the Empire Brew Fest in Syracuse, NY. -http://www.empirebrewfest.com/- We got picked to be one of five bands at this very awesome festival - we're super stoked to be a part of it! Gary McNulty is a 27 year old from Co. Fermanagh, Ireland. While he professionally works as a freelance graphic designer, his underlying passion has always been painting. He is an avid traveler and always after new adventures to fuel his inspiration. He is currently residing in Rochester where he will spend his time creating in hopes of exhibiting his work.

"I have been painting for as long as I can remember. However, my style over the past few years has evolved into what I believe to be a truer representation of myself and my subjects. I believe my style uniquely embodies my devoted affection for light and colour. In order to fully describe the essence of what I am looking at, I choose to depict my subjects with an element of translucency. To emphasize this, rather than treating my subjects as solid objects that absorb and reflect light, I prefer to to treat them more as prisms that refract light into an array of colours. Usually, that special moment in time only remains before me for a split second; just long enough to form a memory. My brain immediately takes in elements of what I see, what I smell, what I hear, what I feel and combines them. From the moment that happens, the sounds, smells and emotions become instantly replaced with color. And thats what I paint. I hope that you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it."

Mini-Moho Tour number One . . .

So it has been almost two weeks since we returned home from our first legitimate mini-tour. Starting in Hornell at Rick Brown's Institute (RBI), we kicked off the weekend with a killer show in what might be considered an unusual setting for The Moho Collective. We have played RBI before, but only in the VIP room which is rather detached and independent from the "bar" setting - it's more of a "venue". However, for various reasons (no opener and an anticipated slow night b/c of events around town) they decided to put us in the bar - which we were a little nervous about, seeing as how our typical show does not lend itself well to accompanying televised sporting events and competing with a jukebox full of pop music - but RBI is a special place. With the help of our good friend Milhouse, RBI can morph itself into an open-minded and left-of-center place, fully accepting of the arts. Milhouse has done a lot of work over the last 6 months to help make RBI more than a sports bar. So barring some crazed fan issues which resulted in very little sleep for all of us - especially Rister - the evening put another great show in the memory bank. We explored new musical territory, we jived with dedicated dancers and spectators, and impromptu interviews were conducted by Milhouse throughout the set (Milhouse is also the head DJ of WRBI Radio - "325 watts broadcasting absolutely nowhere all over the world"). I also must add that I most definitely experienced what will no doubt go down as one of the top three musical moments of my life - Ryan and I accompanied Milhouse on drums and percussion respectively as he scratched his funky turntables to the entire sequence of Mario Brothers theme songs! Talk about nostalgia at its finest! That was an absolute blast! We didn't end up with many pics of the evening - but it is rumored that there was quite a bit of video footage recorded, so stay tuned! Also worth noting is the Beatles cover we learned in the van on the way down - Across the Universe. It went over real well and above all it had an incredible energy about it - Rister and I did some spontaneous arranging by screaming at one another throughout the tune - and it turned out real well. We decided to keep it.

We'll be back to RBI on Saturday, July 17th for the Hornell Beer Olympics.

ahhh . . . home.

Next was an early departure off to Binghamton to the University's eclectic radio station WHRW. All was going smooth until we were about 25 minutes outside of Binghamton when the van made a funny little jerk and started running a bit differently. We could all feel it, but it was our recently appointed (literally minutes before the breakdown - we should have knocked on wood) band mechanic that noticed our volt meter had plummeted into oblivion - BEYOND THE RED! We lost all power in the van, yet luckily made it to a Velero where we could pull of and assess the situation. I must say, and I think I speak for everyone, that this breakdown was truly a great couple of hours, as it really showed us how well we work together OFF of the stage as well. With a scheduled radio show in an hour and a half, a busted van, and a trailer full of gear, AND two more shows for the weekend, we could have easily freaked out and given up, but we immediately started throwing ideas around and making the appropriate phone calls to try and remedy the situation. Within about 20 minutes the radio show was rescheduled to 6pm, AAA was on their way to get the van and drop it off where we were staying, G. Scott Corey (our featured artist for the night) was on his way with his dad's vehicle to pick up the trailer and bring us to the radio station, and our good friend Jeff Marsh was lined up to pick us up from the radio station and get us to the gig that night. Once this was all taken care of, we had hours of beautiful weather to kill, which we took full advantage of. We made sure to grab the essentials from the van - a cooler of beer, baseball mitts, etch-a-sketch, and the Dali Lama's "Book of Transformation" which we took turns reading aloud from. We spent the next couple of hours hanging in a nearby field and making the best of the situation. The logistics of getting the trailer from place to place, and which gear we needed for the radio show, but not for the gig and vice versa is all very confusing - but in the end it did all work out somehow.
The radio station was AMAZING! They supposedly have the largest collection of jazz and avant-garde vinyl this side of the Mississippi, all kept in a vault which our host Andrea was nice enough to let us into! WOW! All I can say is wow . . . I really wish we had more time to explore this incredible collection, but it was infectious just being there! The show went great - we had about 50 minutes of air-time and it was yet another typical Moho situation - us doing our thing in a new context - always adapting and always evolving. The station focuses on experimental music, so we felt very free to do what we enjoy most and just explore. Ryan played with a rigged up high-hat because of misplaced gear in all of the vehicle/trailer confusion - and of course our 4th member was there - the soothing but cacophonous buzz of my 1958 Gibson amplifier.

We eventually made it to Cyber Cafe West which, despite our first impression, turned out to be an amazing venue. This place may be considered the Boulder Coffee of Binghamton - only better and more cozy - (sorry Boulder - we love you still). The owner is this super-right-on guy named Jeff whom has done an awesome job putting this place and its vibe together. The brief opening description on their website says it all - check it out - http://www.cybercafewest.com/. Jeff ran sound for us and we got an exceptional soundboard recording, so stay tuned for some new live tracks! (We're in the editing process now). Lots of magic happened that evening as we reconnected with some old friends. G Scott Corey was the featured artist for the evening, and his display of work was immaculate. I've known G Scott for quite a few years now and I must say that I have always found both his music and his art to be very inspiring. He's very prolific - everything he displayed that night were pieces that he's created within the last two years. As someone who is familiar with G Scott's work - I was, as always, blown away by the fact that they were almost all pieces I had never seen before. I guess what I'm saying is - when you check out G Scott's work - just know that there is PLENTY more where that came from - having once lived with him, I know that this is a dude who can't help but just create all of the time. G Scott's live painting was right on - he was right there with us the whole night and totally hip to the idea. Check out G Scott's website at http://gscottcorey.com/

We also befriended some professional mural painters from New Zealand that are now basing themselves in Binghamton when they travel and paint in the states. We're looking forward to working with them in the future . . .

That night ended up being a long one - the boys sang the Tetris theme in harmony as I packed the trailer on a spiteful bet that it wouldn't all fit. It fit - but we DO need to get a bigger trailer. We also had to hook the loaded trailer back up to the van on a rain soaked 40 degree slope at 3 in the morning after many good beers. Just a few hours later, Rister, Ryan, Jeff, and Mr. Marsh (Jeff's dad - our incredibly helpful host) were out on that 40 degree slope in the pouring rain, replacing the alternator to the van! I was told to sleep in and I didn't argue. Mrs. Marsh had an incredible spread put out for breakfast, and we definitely left our mark. The Marshes are super nice people and have been out to see the Moho a couple of times - they definitely helped us defy the potential nightmare that out breakdown could have been.

By 11am we were on our way to the Lime Hollow Arts Festival just outside of Cortland. Lime Hollow is a nature reserve that promotes local artisans and musicians. They have 10 miles of hiking trails and a whole bunch of bird watching posts. There were musicians set up all along the trails - solo folk acts, a drum ensemble, a pretty gnarly didgeridoo player, and much more - It was a totally new experience for us, as we had never before attempted our tunes SANS ELECTRICITY! Above all, we had a total blast hiking with our instruments and setting up along one of the trails. The music translated real well, and those passing by were all approving. I can say for myself that it was eye-opening to play the tunes on just an acoustic guitar without any effects or tube overdrive . . . I'm glad to know that we can do THAT as well. I can see that being a part of what we do on tour next summer - busk acoustically during the day to make a little extra food money and promote our show that evening.
We also got some video and audio footage of this performance - so stay tuned for that as well. We did find it kind of funny that the only vegetarian food you could get at the nature reserve was salt potatoes - and there was PLENTY of meat to choose from - all served in Styrofoam and augmented with plastic utensils - EWWWW! I can't bash but we found it humorously disappointing at the very least.
Regardless, this place was very cool and a great way to finish up the weekend.

In the end, I think I speak for all of us when I say that despite some total weirdness and some unfortunate mishaps, our first mini-tour was a total success. We proved to ourselves that we do in fact work as well together off the stage as we do on the stage - AND we actually came home with money for the band fund! We'll be back to WHRW and Cyber Cafe West on Friday, November 12th to promote the autumn release of our debut album, as well as a show at Cyber Cafe West that night. The artist for the night is TBA, but some very promising and exciting prospects are developing!! Stay tuned!

Overgrown Music Festival

Hello Friends,

I wanted to take a moment to tell you about one of the festivals we are proud to play this summer. Overgrown Music and Art Festival.... August 27, 28 and 29.

As a NY state music educator, the Overgrown cause is close to my heart.

A large amount of the proceeds of this festival will be donated to the music and art programs in local area schools in the Southern Tier.

Due to several state cuts in spending over the past 3-5 years, most of the public schools in the Southern Tier are completely broke and the first programs being cut are music and art. Imagine going through school without having the option to learn an instrument or paint in an art class.

The Overgrown Festival needs all of our support. The Moho Collective will be at the festival all weekend showing our support and having a great time. Come support this cause with us.

We are selling tickets at every show from now untill the event. Tickets are $40 each and covers the whole weekend including camping. There will be a Moho campsite that is open for everyone to camp on. The Moho Collective will be hosting Moho camp sing-alongs and beer tastings on both Friday and Saturday night. If you can't make it to the event but want to donate money, we will have a donation bucket at each show as well. Your donated money will go directly to the cause.

We only have 20 tickets, so please be sure to buy yours soon.

RocBeer + The Moho Collective

If you didn't know, The Moho Collective really enjoys things with a passion. We don't just enjoy things halfheartedly, we intensely enjoy. For instance, we intensely enjoy Rochester. We believe our city is bursting with talent and some incredible people. Another thing we intensely enjoy is great beer, which Rochester has in spades . . . and much to our great fortune, we get to play awesome places that take pride in their fresh and diverse selection.

When we aren't playing you will most likely see one or all three of us at some event around town. Tomorrow night is no exception. We're hoping to all make it out to the 2nd Roc Beer Social at Quimby's in Henrietta. We all had such a fantastic time at the 1st social at Donnelly's Public House and can't wait to hang out with some great people tomorrow night!

We hear the event starts at 6pm and that the beer specials are through 7... we'll be trickling in and out enjoying your company and Quimby's fantastic craft beer selection.

Great Music Weekend

What a fabulous weekend. Beautiful and unexpected weather, plus amazing music and artists support from our Rochester friends.

Saturday night was an incredible time at Boulder Coffee! Performing, creating, and sharing great art to a full house just makes for an amazing night. Thank you to everyone that shared the evening with us. The artists were wonderful and the vibe was solid. A night tough to top.

Sunday night at Lovin Cup was equally as great, but in it's own special way. The weather was touch and go, but we decided to play outside anyway - and we're so glad we did. Instead of featuring a local visual artist, we showcased local reed master Brad Batz who sat in on alto, tenor and soprano sax. Again, another "every seat filled" evening of fresh music. Thanks to the very responsive and engaged crowd - We're looking forward to next months show at the Lovin' Cup

Thanks again to everyone that supported live Rochester art in some way this weekend! You are truly what makes all the hard work so rewarding.

Tickets: $40 until July 1st.... then they are $50

The cause: in a nutshell, a large amount of the proceeds go to the Steuben County public school music and arts programs. Steuben County is a poor county and the public schools are taking a large hit due to the state budget cuts. I used to teach high school band in Steuben County and can tell you first hand that the music and arts programs ARE already being cut...a little every year. If these types of cuts keep happening, soon there will be no music and art programs.

The Overgrown Festival is a fun way to support a worthy cause; one way the community is doing its part to help keep the music and arts programs alive.

We received our tickets from Shawn (Overgrown Coordinator) last week and are pumped to play this festival August 27th, 28th, and 29th. When you go to the Overgrown website please read through the whole site. There are all kinds of things happening, not just music (although that's a major part of it). There will be record labels, music acts from every genre, artists, Yoga classes, a Psychic/Gypsy Village, Drum circles, medieval reenactment and a trance tent - So when the music stops you can dance all night long. If that's not enough to entice you, just think of all the time you will get to hang with the Moho gang and just relax.

We only have 20 tickets and when they're gone they're gone...so get yours now!!

Gary McNulty is a 27 year old from Co. Fermanagh, Ireland. While he professionally works as a freelance graphic designer, his underlying passion has always been painting. He is an avid traveler and always after new adventures to fuel his inspiration. He is currently residing in Rochester where he will spend his time creating in hopes of exhibiting his work. Ever wonder what musicians do when they're not doing what you see them do on stage? They're probably doing that same thing somewhere else . . .

The Moho Collective gets asked to do all sorts of things. Last night we were at a marching band rehearsal and practicing with a high school musical group for their Stars of Tomorrow competition at the Auditorium Theater.

Ryan's been a music teacher for what seems like forever and Justin is studying to be a teacher, and Kurt...well, Kurt is Kurt--he gets asked to do all sorts of things. Since The Moho Collective is just that, a collective, you can imagine what each of them brings to the group and how their unique experiences and education can impact the Moho sound and our community. You just never know where you'll see them! It may be marching down the street conducting a high school marching band, in a pit orchestra performing with live theater, wearing a kilt and performing at a Tartan Day, or on a stage somewhere in your town.

The moral of this Moho story is this: If you think you see a member of The Moho Collective, wave... chances are you're probably right.

Traveling Roadshow Heads to Syracuse

Sometimes I feel like I'm in a circus. Life is like that some times. This Friday feels a bit like it's going to be one of those days.

We're all headed to Syracuse to Funk'n Waffles for a little Moho based fun and obviously some waffles. If you aren't up to anything, or if you're curious what happens when you combine live music, creative personalities, and a falafel waffle... head to Funk'n Waffles in Syracuse on Friday night at 9pm.
