1979. That's when Ridley Scott's classic Alien was released. A damn scary mash up of science fiction and horror, it was lauded on it's release, went on to spawn a mega popular franchise, and became one of the finest examples of science fiction in cinema history. Now 33 years later, and riding an immense wave of hype, Scott returns to the universe which made his name, and also to the sci-fi genre after 1982's Blade Runner. So is this prequel to the Alien franchise any good? It's 2093, and the scientific vessel Prometheus is nearly finished it's two year journey to the distant moon LV-223, an expedition funded by the Weyland Corporation, and fueled by archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Repace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) discovery of a star map in several different sites all over Earth, drawn by various different cultures from different time periods, that may point to the origins of mankind. Landing on the planet, a mysterious structure is found....

McKean On The Mend

Legendary actor, the excellent Michael Mckean has been released from hospital following a car crash last week. The Spinal Tap star sustained a broken leg will miss the remainder of the Broadway musical “The Best Man” in which he was appearing. McKean has been transferred to hospital for further rehabilitation. Mckean seen recently in the brilliant TV show, “Homeland”, was walking on a sidewalk in New York when he was accidentally struck by an out of control car. On Wednesday, McKean checked out of St. Luke's Hospital and into partner facility Roosevelt Hospital for what a hospital spokesperson described as "extensive rehabilitation," McKean had this to say: "I am heading into week two with renewed admiration for New York City’s Emergency Medical Service staff, the NYPD, the staff of St. Luke's Hospital (where I was born!) and all those with problems much greater than my own, I am overwhelmed by the good wishes of friends old and new. The Bourne Legacy Trailer

Iron Man 3 gets a new man in a new suit of armour

Those of you following Marvel Comics in the last few years will be familar with the Iron Patriot. A redesigned suit of Iron Man armour with a colour scheme to envoke the memory of the then deceased Captain America, it was piloted by long time Spider-Man villain Norman Osborn when he held the mantle of America's 'Top Cop'. Now it seems the Iron Patriot will be jumping from the printed page to the big screen, judging from recent pictures from the set of Iron Man 3. Due to the rights of all Spider-Man characters belonging to Sony, Osborn won't be piloting the new armour, the rights to which belong to Marvel Studios since Iron Patriot made his debut in an Avengers comic. Instead that honour falls to the recent announced James Badge Dale, even though his character, Eric Savin, is best known as a completely separate character called Coldblood. Snow White And The Huntsman Review

Most people are familiar with the Snow White tale. You know the one. Princess locked in a tower by her evil queen step mother, who talks to a mirror and wants to stay forever young. Combined with a Huntsman, a bunch of dwarves, it’s been a classic Disney tale for quite some time. While the Universal version keeps the core of the story at its heart, the niceties of the original animated version are long gone as hearts and souls are consumed in great numbers amongst other on screen delights. This is a very different version to what you might have previously been accustomed to. It’s dark, It’s large and it’s absolutely brilliant. Kristen Stewart has really shed the Bella Vamp vibe incredibly quickly here and looks the part of Snow White. She’s got a great, powerful woman type presence on screen and as handy as she is with a multitude of weapons from swords to nails, she also has a very subtle gentleness about her, which is a nice throwback to the original Snow White. Reports from Hollywood have confirmed that Tom Cruises’ upcoming movie One Shot in which he plays the role of Jack Reacher has been renamed. The new title is set to be.. wait for it… Jack Reacher! Well that will be handy as to avoid confusion, no reasons for this late edit but one suspects that it may have to do with branding of the project and association with Novelist, Lee Child’s creation. Seemingly this has been on the cards for a while as recently as last month Cruise was heard referring to the project as “Reacher” Anyway that won’t spoil your enjoyment Cruise Fans as Tom will be in his customary fine acting form. for the shift in title, though it has been on the cards since last month when Tom Cruise kept referring to the movie as "Reacher." Catwoman's certainly got a set of lungs on her. The first trailer for Tom Hooper's adaption of the world renowned and long running stage musical has hit, giving us a taste of what to expect, both aurally and visually. I have got to admit I have quite a soft spot for this musical, and so far the movie seems to do it justice. Synopsis: An adaptation of the successful stage musical based on Victor Hugo's classic novel set in 19th-century France, in which a paroled prisoner named Jean Valjean seeks redemption. Dark Knight Rises SEQUEL?

This is brief, and chances are it will never happen. But bare in mind The Dark Knight Rises is arriving amidst a football stadium sized amount of hype (same stadium will blow up in the movie) and I’d guess it will cruise past the billion dollar mark easily enough. What’s that got to do with a sequel? Hang on? A sequel, to The Dark Knight Rises? Are you out of your mind? Not entirely. Christian Bale has spoke to Empire and said the following “My understanding is that this is the last one. I think it’s appropriate, I think it’s going out at the right time. But…if Chris came to me with a script and said, ‘You know what? There is another story’ then I would love the challenge of making a fourth one work.” Chances are, as mentioned above, it’ll never happen considering Christopher Nolan has said this is the last one, its his trilogy.. But from a studio point of view, surely a fourth Batman movie with the same cast and crew would be far more profitable and successful than doing a reboot...

Currently shooting in Ireland, John Ridley's All Is By My Side chronicles the early days of rock legend Jimi Hendrix, up to the release of his first album Are You Experienced. After the success of The Kings Speech, director Tom Hooper is now bringing the smash hit musical, Les Miserables, to the big screen. This marks the first time an adaption of the musical has been attempted instead of the novel, first published in 1862, on which it is based. Quite a cast has been assembled including Hugh Jackman, Russel Crowe, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Boham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried. Marvel Studios head honcho, Kein Feige has been talking about lots of stuff in the latest edition of Empire. Feige can’t believe how successful The Avengers has been stating "I was just hoping it would beat the opening weekend of Iron Man 2, which was the biggest opening weekend for any Marvel Studios movie. We did 80 or 90 million above that. As the numbers started coming in on Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday night, they just kept getting bigger and bigger, into areas I would never in a million years have believed." We have seen a lot of this footage before, but there are some interesting new scenes in this trailer, especially Gwen Stacy been thrown out a window, and the beginning of Rhys Ifan's transformation into The Lizard. The more I see of this movie the more it wins me over. It certainly promises to be more fun than the original trilogy, and with a new origin in place for the hero, it, at the moment, justifies the character been rebooted. Guess we'll see in July. Simon Pegg & Edgar Wright talk about “The World’s End”

Great news for Simon Pegg fans, the final instalment of the much heralded and highly anticipated three flavours Cornetto trilogy is well on the way and a few details have been released. In an interview with Empire Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg talk about the upcoming project. The final part entitled The World’s End revolves around a pub crawl involving four childhood friends, which include Simon Pegg’s character Gary King while Nick Frost plays Andy Knight. It was leaked a few months ago that the storyline involved the group enjoying a few beers while in the background an apocalyptic event engulfs around them. Now it seems according to Pegg that the plot involves "a crawl through twelve pubs, culminating in the final one, which is The World's End." Not long to go till Ridley Scott's return to the realm that he made his name in, and just in case your anticipation isn't high enough, there's a new featurette doing the rounds putting the focus firmly on the titular space craft. My favorite thing about Alien was the claustrophobic setting on the Nostromo, and it looks like this element will be making a welcome return in Prometheus. Now this is more like it. The latest TV spot for The Dark Knight Rises is rather epic and provides a proper taste of the movie that will arrive in an Everest sized amount of hype. I’m still not sold on Catwoman OR Anne Hathaway. Here’s hoping she doesn’t do here what she did at the Oscars! I accept Nolan is incredibly gifted, but Catwoman??? Lets hope it doesn’t go all Spiderman 3, with far too much going on. He has chronicled the dangers of school boy crushes in Rushmore, given us the dysfunctional family to end all dysfunctional families in The Royal Tennenbaums, and tackled Roald Dahl as only he knows how in Fantastic Mr. Fox. Now director Wes Anderson charts the course of young love in the 1960's with Moonrise Kingdom. Framed by a fantastic on screen narration by Bob Balaban, the movie follows Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward), two twelve year olds who believe only they understand each other. When Sam escapes from his boy scout troop (employing a trick or two from The Shawshank Redemption), the two run away together, even though their plans don't seem to extend to getting off the island they call home. It isn't long till the adults, including Suzy's parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand), the local sheriff (Bruce willis), and Sam's troop leader (Edward Norton), get involved, and the search is on for the young lovers. Here come the Men In Black. See, that song is stuck in your head now isn’t it? The original Men In Black was a genuine slice of greatness. It was funny, had brilliant characters and wonderful visual effects. The follow up movie was a bit all over the place, even though Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones had that wonderful chemistry. And now, a hundred years on (it feels like it) the band are back together, and this time Josh Brolin is tagging along in Men In Black 3. With a storyline that almost reeks of “just for the sake of getting anything on the big screen”, Men In Black 3 could be positioned to be as poor as the sequel. But is it? Agent J (Will Smith) travels back in time to stop Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) getting murdered and subsequently saving the world from complete and utter destruction from Boris The Animal. That’s it, thats what they came up with since 2002. As idiotic as it sounds, when the movie gets back to the 1960’s (which it does quickly enough) things ain’t half...

Eying a September start date, Jose Padilha's Robocop remake has announced a new casting, with Gary Oldman signed on as Norton, the creator of the titular cyborg, played by Joel Kinnaman. This is a brand new character and ties in with the director's earlier comments about his movie going in a slightly different direction to the original, with more focus on the transformation ordinary beat cop Alex Murphy undergoes to become the future of law enforcement, a process confined to only one scene in the original. G.I. Joe: Retaliation Delayed until NEXT YEAR

This is a bit crazy! G.I. Joe Retaliation has been delayed until next year, March 29th 2013 to be exact. Brian Goldner Hasbro's President and CEO says “"It is increasingly evident that 3D resonates with movie-goers globally and together with Paramount, we made the decision to bring fans an even more immersive entertainment experience," At least they are taking their time with the conversion, but it’s a bit bizarre when a movie was so close to release ( June 29th) that the studio would do an about turn. One wonders is there a bunch of reshoots and rewrites? It just doesn’t cut any water with me! After all, remember what Warner did with Clash of the Titans. That was converted into 3D in a very short space of time, weeks before release. Granted it was converted by a bunch of blind idiots (sorry, it was just an awful conversion). Bizarre!
