It was bound to happen sooner or later. Last night my almost 5-year-old daughter used a profanity. Well, sort of. She didn't drop the F bomb but she did express her displeasure at my husband when he told her before bed he wasn't going to read yet another book to her. So Natalia walked out of the room and right on cue uttered two words, "Damn it".

Made me wonder if she used to sneak downstairs in the middle of the night when she was three and watch back-to-back episodes of "24".

If you plan on taking a trip with your kids this summer do not leave home without this clever item. It will keep your kids from peeing all over the car seats and spare you from having to walk into another disgusting public bathroom. Yeah, yeah, you have to pull over somewhere safely so your little bugger can use it but believe me it's worth it. So much so I wish they made them for adults. I came this close to borrowing my daughter's travel potty the second I walked into one of the most revolting gas station restrooms on our way back from Rhode Island the other day.

I can't tell you how many times I've uttered, whispered or said this expletive since my daughter came into the world 4 1/2 years ago. Kudos to for Adam Mansbach for having the balls to put his thoughts on paper! I almost peed in my pants when I first heard about this book while I was on vacation and just happened to catch the author "explaining himself" on the TODAY show.

Going to the Theater

Last year we took Natalia to the "theater" for the first time. Seussical the Musical of all things. She kept her hands over eyes for the first five minutes as if we were forcing her to watch a Sarah Palin speech. But after peaking thru her fingers she soon realized was she was missing. And ever since then she's been bugging us about seeing something else. Here's my chance and yours. This is a picture of Natalia the first time I checked on her last night. The second time she was flat on her back on the floor. When I told her this morning that she fell out of her bed, she blamed it on the winds. Me: "Yes, it's windy outside Natalia but you fell out of bed all on your own." Natalia: "No, mom. If it wasn't the wind, then you must've done it."

The cookies and cream cupcakes we had at Natalia's 4th birthday were to die for. But the pumpkin cupcake I just stuffed in my mouth is so addictive if I keep eating them my husband just might find me face down on the dining room table stuck to pile of maple cream cheese frosting. They are that f'ing good. Proof that Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa really is a goddess. I can burn toast simply by walking into the kitchen. Yet somehow by following her recipe I made the best cupcake on planet Earth. Thank god for my subscription to House Beautiful magazine. Great style and recipes even an idiot can make.

Pumpkin Cupcakes with Maple Frosting

Makes 10 cupcakes

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature

1 cup canned pumpkin purée (8 ounces), not pie filling

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup coarsely chopped Heath bars, for serving (2 1.4-ounce bars)

Maple Frosting

6 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature

1/4 teaspoon Boyajian Natural Maple Flavor

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Brush or spray the top of 10 muffin tins with vegetable oil and line them with 10 paper liners.

2. Into a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. In a larger bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin purée, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vegetable oil. Add the flour mixture and stir until combined.

3. Divide the batter among the prepared tins (I use a level 2 1/4-inch ice cream scoop) and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Set aside to cool completely.

4. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the cream cheese and butter on low speed until smooth. Stir in the maple flavoring and vanilla extract. With the mixer still on low, slowly add the confectioners' sugar and mix until smooth
4. Spread the cupcakes with the Maple Frosting and sprinkle with the chopped toffee bits.

Screw birthday cake. This year for my daughter's party we ordered incredible cupcakes from a teeny weeny bakery in Frederick, Maryland. Jennifer of Wicked Good Treats got up at 7 a.m. the day of the party and baked 65 cupcakes and then delivered them to the party herself. The cookie and cream cupcakes are to die for. Take a bite and you'll wish you could cram a dozen in your mouth at once.

It seems like just yesterday my daughter was sliding out of me at the hospital like she was on some freaky amusement park ride. And now four years later, she can practically eyeball me face to face, outgrowing clothes so fast, I swear she's gotta be popping growth hormones on the playground.

Just a week to go to my daughter's 4th birthday party. No wonder I feel like I'm planning a party at the White House instead of My Gym. The parent who started the tradition of buying gift bags for all the kids should be banned from party planning! Better yet, I'd like to tie her to a tree and peg her with cupcakes! Next year we're keeping it simple. Maybe just throw a little something in the Easy Bake Oven and call it a day!

This is one of my favorite pictures of Natalia. I took it just a few months ago when we were visiting family in pretty as a postcard Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Every time I look at it I beam with pride and then I think Holy Shit in no time she'll be close to their age and I'll have to worry about hormones, boys and crap I don't even want to imagine just yet. Like the time my when my bad ass 16-year-old self threw a party while my mom was away and someone barfed in the tub, broke the porch light and clipped their cheesy toenails right there in front of me in the living room. All in one night. Oh, my God, I better stock up on Prozac now. How much can I buy over the next ten years?

If this article about babysitting secrets bears any truth I might as well start looking for a new nanny now. The title alone, 10 Things Your Babysitter Won't Tell You would scare the shit out of any mom, especially one like me. My house is the messiest it's ever been, we've caught back on the nanny's hours a bit cause of my hiatus from work and my parenting style is completely different when it comes to Natalia. I'm stern and our nanny is sweet as chocolate Key Lime pie on a stick. I will do anything to keep her so I just might have to resort to being a Stepford Wife for a bit and clean up my act.

I will never forgive myself if our nanny talks a walk. She is like Mary Poppins, Mother Theresa and Angeline a Jolie all rolled up into one cute little package. My daughter is head over heels in love with her. She thinks Hannah walks on water while me, me, her mom, walks on top of her pee on the way to the bathroom.

Forgive me Hannah. I promise I will make this a job worth keeping.
