Kia and Hyundai Thefts on the Rise

Cars are a necessary asset for so many of us who cannot rely on public transportation or walking to get to work, the grocery store – to live life! When you register a vehicle, it also becomes necessary to insure the vehicle. There are so many different kinds of cars you can buy, some more desirable than others. Kias and Hyundais are owned by thousands of people across the country, but why are insurance companies struggling to insure them?

When you purchase comprehensive coverage on a vehicle, you are covering the vehicle in case it is stolen. A TikTok social media challenge has recently been targeting Kias and Hyundais, which has caused concern for insurers across the country.

But why are Kia and Hyundai thefts on the rise? Continue reading to learn more about the social media challenge targeting Kias and Hyundais and how you can protect your vehicle from theft.

According to NYCM, thieves prefer to steal vehicles that are high in value. This is evident in the HLDI Report on vehicle losses. According to a Highway Loss Data Institute analysis of 2021 insurance claims, “When it comes to theft, bargain priced vehicles manufactured by Kia and Hyundai now rival muscle cars and luxury SUVSs as top targets”. But thieves also prefer to steal vehicles that are easily stolen, and some Hyundai and Kia vehicles manufactured between 2015 and 2019 lack electronic immobilizers that prevent thieves from breaking in and bypassing the ignition. Because of this, social media “challenges” have arisen that show these exploits and encourage people to create social media content while stealing vehicles.

Kia and Hyundai are responding to the thefts by providing anti-theft solutions for the owners of affected vehicle models. According to a press release, approximately 3.8 million Hyundais and 4.5 million Kias are involved in the service campaign. In addition to the software update, the release states that between November 2022 and February 2023 Hyundai and Kia worked to provide 26,000 steering wheel locks to 77 law enforcement agencies in 12 states.

What can you do to prevent a Kia or Hyundai theft? NYCM shares their 7 tips:

Roll up your windows and lock your vehicle.
Never leave your keys in your vehicle.
Try not to leave valuables in your vehicle, and never leave valuables in plain sight.
If you have a garage, lock your vehicle inside at night.
If you don’t have a garage, park in well-lit areas at night. Install motion-activated lights in your driveway for a cost-effective security measure.
Consider purchasing a steering wheel lock for added peace of mind.

Prevent Issues with Frozen Pipes

It’s very important to prevent frozen pipes in winter. Homeowners insurance claims as a result of frozen pipes can be very expensive. We get several calls with claims about frozen pipes in the winter, so we want to make sure you know what to do to prevent them. In this blog post, we will discuss the issue with frozen pipes with the help of New York Central Mutual.

First off, do you know why frozen pipes are such an exposure? When water begins to freeze, it expands. The expansion can cause the pipe to burst. You may not even know that you have a burst pipe until either the house warms up when heat is turned on or the weather turns towards spring. If the water is not frozen, it will leak into your home and cause potentially significant amounts of damage.

Water claims can be extremely costly. That is why it’s very important to prevent frozen pipes.

Why do your pipes freeze? When the temperature drops below freezing, the water running within your home is at risk of freezing. The pipes most at risk for freezing are those that run through the unheated parts of your home including the basement, attic and garage. The temperature threshold to watch out for is 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

How can you prevent frozen pipes? First off, you need to regulate your home’s temperature to keep your pipes warm. Second, consider adding insulation where it’s needed. Lastly, you can leave your faucet dripping on especially cold nights. It will prevent freezing but keep in mind that this is a temporary solution.

What should you do if your pipes freeze? Regardless of the steps you take, it is possible that your pipes may freeze. If that happens, start by opening cabinet doors to get warm air circulating around the pipes. Or use a hairdryer or heating pad to warm the pipes.

What should you do if a pipe does burst? It is the policy holder’s duty to prevent further damage, so this means that you need to act as quickly as possible. You’ll need to shut off water service immediately to the building. You’ll then need to get the clean up process going quickly and dry out the area to start to prevent things like mold. Move any belongings in the affected area to a dry area or at least above the water. Take photos along the way that you can share with your claims adjuster if necessary. Call your insurance agent who can provide additional advice or help you determine if it makes sense to submit a claim.

Prevent Chimney Fires This Winter

As the cold begins to set in in Upstate NY, many homeowners will turn to their fireplaces for an added source of warmth and coziness. These fireplaces can be beautiful and serve as a secondary source of heat, but they can also be dangerous. It’s very important to know how to prevent chimney fires from happening.

Travelers Insurance, one of our key partners, is providing their top tips to prevent chimney fires this winter:

1. Keep Your Chimney & Fireplaces Clean

Have your chimney and fireplace inspected and cleaned by a licensed chimney specialist to help ensure they are functioning safely and efficiently.¹
Keep the area around the hearth clear of debris, decorations and any other combustible materials.²

2. Keep Fires Burning Safely

Make sure the damper is open before lighting a fire so the fireplace will vent properly. Do not close your damper until you are sure the fire is out.
When starting a fire, only use a match or commercial firelighter. Never use flammable liquids to start a fire.
Keep fireplace glass doors open while burning a fire. This allows the fire to receive enough air for complete combustion and to help reduce creosote build-up in the chimney. Creosote is a substance that derives from incomplete combustion.³
Keep metal mesh screens closed whenever your fireplace is in use to help keep embers in the fireplace.
Only use dry wood in your fireplace. Wet wood can increase the build-up of creosote, which can lead to chimney fires. Select wood – preferably hard wood – that has been seasoned six months to a year.⁴
Do not burn plastic: it can release toxic chemicals and cause damage to your chimney, fireplace or wood stove.
Never burn a Christmas tree in your fireplace, as the sparks from burning needles can increase the risk for a chimney fire. Also, do not burn cardboard boxes, wrapping paper or trash in your fireplace.
Never leave a fire in a fireplace unattended. Before leaving the house or going to bed, make certain to fully extinguish the fire.
Allow ashes to cool completely before disposing of them and note that ashes can take several days to cool completely. Never empty ashes directly into a trash can. Instead, place ashes in a covered metal container located at least 10 feet away from your home and any other building.

3. Best Practices for Firewood and Your Chimney Safety

Stack firewood at least 30 feet away from your home.
Keep your roof and chimney clear of leaves, pine needles and other debris. Prune trees and branches to keep them away from your chimney.
Install a chimney cap with a spark arrester to help keep debris, leaves, branches and animals out, and to help prevent burning embers or sparks from escaping and creating a fire hazard.

Nine Tips for Motorcycle Safety

Now that the weather is starting to warm up, many bike riders are thinking about getting that bike on the road. But it is critical to remember that motorcycles can be dangerous when not handled correctly.

In fact, motorcyclists are 29 times more likely to die in a crash than people in a car, according to the Motorcycle Legal Foundation. So not only is NY motorcycle insurance very important, but so is general safety.

Here are nine important motorcycle safety tips for riders as provided by Markel Insurance:

Take a safety course. A safety course will teach you the rules of the road for motorcycles. You will also learn the appropriate actions to take in unpredictable riding situations that can arise.
Check the weather before heading out. Rain, ice and snow can compromise your ride. Driving in these elements is hazardous for bikers because you have less traction than a car and visibility is lower.
Wear motorcycle gear. Motorcycle gear protects you from the elements, debris and road rash. Appropriate gear includes a DOT-approved helmet, goggles, leather jacket, leather pants or chaps, over the ankle boots and non-slip gloves.
Inspect your bike before each ride. It’s a good idea to inspect your bike before you ride to ensure it is as safe as possible.
Obey traffic rules and drive the limit. This may sound remedial, but it’s important to follow traffic rules, use signals and drive the posted speed limit to avoid accidents.
Be visible. Avoid other drivers’ blind spots; drive with your headlights on even during the day; wear reflective or bright clothing, and; always use your turn signals and hand signals.
Be observant and watch for hazards. Driving defensively enables you to anticipate traffic problems and road hazards. Sand, oil and gravel can make you lose traction.
Stay at a safe distance. Tailgating is not safe. It is recommended to stay at least four seconds away from the vehicle in front of you.
Carry a first aid kit. Keeping a basic first-aid kit with your motorcycle is a good idea in case of injury. It should include: disinfecting wipes, bandages, hand sanitizer, gauze, adhesive tape and Band-Aids.

The fall season has begun and the leaves have started to change in many parts of Upstate, NY. Homes are adorned with pumpkins, skeletons, and makeshift graveyards in preparation for the spookiest time of year. Kids and adults alike look forward to this time almost all year round as they get to decorate and dress up with family and friends. Not only do you want to be the best decorated house on the block, but you want to be the safest. That’s why we are sharing our Halloween safety tips!

Safety is a priority – not only at Halloween – but all times of the year. Below are top Halloween safety tips provided by Travelers Insurance.

Be Aware of Dangers that Might Not be Visible During the Night

Walk your property before Halloween to identify and minimize potential dangers, especially those difficult to see after dark. For example, check to make sure temporary extension cords are secured to avoid becoming a tripping hazard.
Make sure walking surfaces are even and clear of debris, and that any obstacles are clearly marked, such as stakes, exposed roots or holes.
Ensure that your front yard, walkway and entry way are well-lit so that those unfamiliar with your home can safely navigate. If using a fog machine, be careful that the fog does not make it difficult to see tripping hazards.

Remember that Welcoming the Neighborhood Inside Also Invites Risk

When hosting a haunted house, make sure to allow adequate floor and exit lighting. Keep exits clear to help prevent tripping.
Avoid advertising the event in your neighborhood or on social media.
- If charging for admission for a haunted house or other forms of entertainment, be aware that this could be considered a business activity and you should consult with your agent or insurance company representative to ensure you have the proper coverage.

Be Smart about Where You Place Decorations

Set up decorations with traffic flow in mind. Place them to prevent tipping over, blowing away or becoming a tripping hazard.
When plugging in your scary indoor decorations, do not overload electrical outlets.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to help avoid damage to your home or injury to your guests. For example, make sure inflatable decorations are secured properly and kept away from sources of ignition.

Set Up Spooky Lighting with Caution

Avoid any kind of open flame.
Consider using battery-operated candles or LED lighting as a safe alternative to candles.
Do not drape costumes or other fabrics over light bulbs, which generate heat and can start a fire.

Choose Decorations Wisely

Avoid dried flowers, cornstalks and crêpe paper because they are highly combustible. Keep these and other decorations away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
Use lights and other electrical decorations that have been tested for safety – look for a certification mark from UL, CSA, ETL or another nationally-recognized laboratory.
When plugging in decorations, avoid daisy chaining extension cords, which may cause overheating.
Never staple, nail through or fasten electrical wires or extension cords in any way that might damage the wire or insulation. This could cause electrical shock or fire.
Plug all outdoor lights and decorations into ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to help reduce the risk of electric shock.

Do Not be Frightened by the Risks

Give yourself peace of mind and speak with your insurance agent to make sure you are properly covered.
Consider an umbrella policy that could provide extra protection in case of an accident.

Benefits of Practicing Mindfulness in the Workplace

With the hustle and bustle of every day life, it is easy to get caught up in the craziness of work and life schedules. It is important to step back and re center yourself from time to time. This not only improves your family life but will improve your work life as well. Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you’re sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. If you are a business owner, it is important to realize the benefits of practicing mindfulness in the workplace.

Below (from Travelers Insurance) are 5 benefits of practicing mindfulness in the workplace that can help your team become more productive:

1. Better Prioritization Abilities

Mindfulness may help you and your team prioritize better. Multi-tasking is really task-switching because it’s not possible for the brain to handle two tasks simultaneously. A research study at Stanford University found that multi-tasking actually made participants less able to switch tasks effectively, likely because they were less able to filter out irrelevant distractions. Since not every task has the same level of importance to your small business, being able to discern what’s most important can be a critically important skill.

2. Increased Memory

Mindfulness can help boost your working memory. Research has shown an increase in working memory among participants in an eight-week mindfulness training. That working memory can translate to productivity if employees are able to better recall training and other information useful for their work. It may even help them avoid accidents and injuries at work if they are better able to remember safety practices.

3. Reduced Stress

Mindfulness can help reduce stress. According to an American Psychological Association survey, 60 percent of respondents reported that work is a very or somewhat significant source of stress, second only to money matters. Serious health issues can arise from stress, from hypertension to cardiovascular disease. Mindfulness training, especially when practiced as a team, can help reduce anxiety and teach emotion regulation strategies to better handle difficult situations.

4. Improved Focus

Mindfulness can help improve focus. Distractions abound in the modern office. Open office concepts can mean employees need to filter out foosball matches to focus, frequent meetings may disrupt workflow, and notifications from email, texts and other social media can make it hard to concentrate. A study that looked at how participants were able to focus found that experienced mindful meditators performed better on all measures of attention and had higher self-reported mindfulness than those with no meditation experience.

5. Team Building

Mindfulness can be a good team-building activity. Practicing mindfulness can be a great way to bring a team together, by providing a team-building activity and by teaching how to better relate to one another. Whether you invite an instructor in to lead a yoga, tai chi or qigong class, or you offer a more structured meditation training program, the team can apply what they learn to handling challenges at work, being more focused and taking time to be present.

In conclusion, creating a more mindful culture can have benefits for you and your team, both inside and outside of the office. Implementing voluntary mindfulness programs in your office such as afternoon yoga or meditation could be a great way to encourage employees to take a moment for themselves and get grounded. And, with practices such as these becoming more mainstream in the recent years, you may find more of your team that not would sign up for these programs. Extreme Heat Driving Tips

As the Capital District continues to be affected by numerous heat waves, it is important that you and your vehicle keep cool while traveling. If you are not prepared, you could encounter troubles along the way which could lead to prolonged travel times and, more importantly, big repair costs to you. Getting familiar with extreme heat driving tips is a great way to prepare yourself and your vehicle for the hot months ahead.

To help keep you on the go, follow these tips provided by Safeco Insurance below.

Before Hitting the Road in Extreme Heat

Check your cooling system . Make sure you have enough coolant in the tank, but also consider having your system flushed and refilled – especially if you can’t remember the last time you had that done. Experts recommend this service about every 24 months. Don’t forget to examine the hoses and belts under the hood, and even your radiator cap. It should be on tight enough to maintain the system’s pressure.
Gauge your tires. You should check your tire pressure (including the spare) once a month, before driving. They’re sensitive to heat, which can increase pressure and the risk of a blowout.
Test your AC. You don’t want your air conditioning to fail during a warm-weather drive, so have a mechanic take a look if it’s not operating at full-blast.

On the Road When the Weather’s Hot

Carry an emergency kit. Every car needs emergency supplies. Make sure you have plenty of water in case you get stranded.
Remember that it gets hot inside, too. The temperature inside a car can rise incredibly quickly on a warm day. When it’s 90 degrees outside, it can take just 10 minutes for a car’s interior to hit 110 or higher. So don’t ever leave children or pets in a parked car (even in the shade) when it’s warm out, and bring a cooler bag with some ice packs if you’re grocery shopping. You should even be careful when getting into your car after it’s been in the sun. Those seatbelt buckles are hot!
Keep kids and pets hydrated. It’s typically warmer in the back seat and cargo areas of SUVs, wagons and minivans, so make sure passengers are getting some air, and bring plenty of water and snacks.
Keep your gas tank full (or close to it). Hot weather can sometimes bring power outages, which could prevent you from filling up when you really need it.
Have an electric car? Watch the weather. Research has shown that extreme weather, hot or cold, can have a significant impact on the batteries of electric cars. In some instances, your travel range could drop by 40 percent or more.

What To Do if Your Car Overheats

Turn off your AC and turn on your heat. Doing both can help take some stress off your engine.
Pull over if it’s safe. If your temperature dial shoots up, or you start seeing water or steam coming from under the hood, stop the car and call a tow truck. If you see smoke coming from the car, get out and move away if you’re able to do so safely.
Be careful when examining the engine. Take care popping the hood, and don’t open the radiator cap when your car is overheating.
Add coolant or water only when the car is cool. You’ll have to wait a while, but adding coolant or water to a hot engine can do significant damage.
