It was love at first sight when we stumbled upon the exquisite handcrafted jewelry pieces by the very talented jewelry artist Faria Siddiqui. Made in America and created with the highest quality of Japanese beads, semi precious gemstones, and delicate Swarovski crystals, each of her jewelry pieces stand on their own as unique and colorful. TMB: How long have you been working as a Jewelry artist? 

FS: I started my website in March 2011 but started making jewelry for myself at least a year or so before that.

TMB: What made you consider this creative path?

FS: I love statement pieces and I could not find much in the market that was made with real stones and affordable, I did not want to buy resin jewelry so I made anything I wanted to go with my outfits. My friends and family liked what they saw and I started making pieces for them, and it just grew from there. I don't advertise, it's all word of mouth.

TMB: Did you receive any professional training prior to starting your jewelry business and working on creating such amazing handcrafted gemstone pieces?

FS: I have not had any kind of training, never went to any art school, took no classes, I learnt what I did by myself.

It all started with my then 11 year old daughter after I enrolled her in a glass fusing class. They strung one necklace together with some beads, I had never made any jewelry before that and I wanted to see how to put a clasp on a necklace. She insisted we buy a bead kit from Costco, we did and the rest is history! So to this day she points out that it is because of her I started my business.

TMB: What is your inspiration when you are trying to come up with a new jewelry piece or a collection?

FS: I start on a piece by the stone or beads I have, I am actually very fortunate that I can see the end product in my mind once I decide on the beads, that's not to say I never change things as I am making it, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I love hearing people say that I have put my heart into whatever I make, that's the biggest compliment. I always do the best I can and even if I have to take things apart ten times I will till I get it right.

In 2012, Faria won the Grand Prize in a contest held by a gemstone company. More than a thousand artists participated and that was the first time she had entered any kind of contest. Her winning piece was the Orange Carnelian necklace (shown on the right). Her jewelry was also featured with Baani D clothing line in Pakistan Fashion Week. Besides Pakistan, her work has also been exhibited at London Fashion Week.

D.I.R. Fashion stands for diamonds in the rough. That is essentially where our style stems from; our concept of modesty. We strive to create designs that reflect our belief in modest fashion. For our Fall and Winter 2014 collection we brought back our signature pleated maxi dresses from last year and added a cowl neck or hooded dress. We all come in different shapes and sizes and with a simple elastic waistband our dresses can accommodate for all body types. The v-neck of our pleated dresses and the cowl neck is a great example of this. We take simple ideas and turn them into bold and beautiful modest pieces. In addition, we also have a lightweight graceful polka dot skirt, and five different pattern ball gown skirts to complete our fall and winter collection of 2014. To top it off most of our dresses and skirts include hidden side pockets! We welcome everyone to try our clothing line and to provide feedback as we continue to grow and strive to accommodate for everyone!

This year we finally had the opportunity to visit the infamous ISNA Bazaar that took place at Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan. It was an interesting occasion to see a bazaar filled with lots of familiar faces including families, friends, and many Muslim celebrities all under one roof. We were pleasantly surprised to see all these popular faces including the giant live mascot of Adam from the Sound Vision’s kids show Adam’s World in person! Maa shaa Allah the bazaar was of a decent size and it was a little overwhelming to see so many vendors. We would have loved to talk to each one of them but the traffic on some of the booths was crazy and our time was limited so we decided to do a quick walk through and pick vendors that caught our eyes. Since good modest fashion designer labels are still hard to find in USA, we decided to mostly focus on fashion related booths. There were quite a few but following are 8 of the modest and trendy Muslim fashion brands that really stood out for us.

Eman Apparel based in Toronto, Canada is the creation by designer Eman Mustafa. She brought a few of her chic creations that were only available at ISNA Bazaar and cannot be purchased online. Something to keep in mind if you think you will just buy them online later. Always double check with the designers to make sure the selected collection they have brought for the bazaar is also available online. A couple of our favorites from her collection was the peach floral and the blue patterned dresses seen in the image below. Speaking of flowers, we noticed that floral pattern was quite a popular print. Each designer had at least one floral dress in their collection.

Schaumburg, IL based Seera & Eems is an online clothing boutique by owner and the very creative and talented designer Carla C. Taylor. They provide custom designed modest apparel for girls and women. You can select a style from their gallery, pick out the fabric, color, and fit that best suits you. Once the design process is complete, they start creating your unique and custom outfit. One of our favorite pieces from her collection was this jacket shown in the image below. It was beautiful in person and our photo really does not do justice to the details.

Diamonds in the Rough or D.I.R. Fashion is another one of our picks. It is based in Dearborn, Michigan and was started by two lovely ladies, Khadijah and Bushra Abuzeid. D.I.R. fashion provides modest style creations for the modern woman. They had some really pretty maxi skirts and dresses in their collection. Their long sleeve ruffle floral maxi dress (as shown in the image below) and the black cowl neck dress were two of our favorites! Both are available online. Another cool thing to note is that when you shop with them, 10% of the profit is donated to a charity.

Another trendy modest fashion booth was that of New York based Urban Modesty. A modest fashion shop that was launched by Sherihan Moustafa. Although we didn’t get a chance to meet her, we did get welcomed by her two lovely sisters who were managing the booth that day. It was wonderful talking to them and getting an overview of the variety of collection Urban Modesty has to offer, which includes affordable maxi dresses, skirts, and tops for both casual and formal events. There were a lot of styles and colors to choose from at their booth but these dresses in the image below really stood out for us.

Next up is Amelena Designs. A clothing line based in Cliffside Park, New Jersey. They provide conservative yet trendy high fashion clothing for women. When we stopped at their booth, we ended up walking away with two versions (red & blue) of the cardigan jacket shown in the image below thanks to the help of designer Amal Abuelhija. She had some really pretty designs. Some of our favorites, besides the cardigan, included the Bohemian vintage maxi dresses made up of fine silk crepe and the double layered polka dot skirt in chiffon fabric. Overall, she had a nice collection of long sleeve formal and casual maxi dresses, abayas, skirts and cardigans. One thing we observed and would like to point out is that their sizes for the maxis ran a little on the tall side. So you might have to get them altered.

There were a couple of Fashion labels that we wanted to check out in detail but due to the crowd and limited time we couldn’t really do it. One such label, which seemed quite popular was of Artizara, a San Diego based store owned by Sarah Ansari. Compared to the rest of the more recent online modest clothing boutiques, Artizara is quite established and has been around since 2002. They had a lot to offer. Their collection was quite versatile and had everything from dresses to tees including a pretty selection of jewelry items particularly long pretty pendants. Besides other accessories, they even offer gifts and art items in their online store. The dress shown in the image below really stood out for us and was one of our favorites.

Turkish Fashions by Guzel Boutique was another label that caught our attention. They had a massive size display, which included a lot of nice modest designed clothing and scarves. We noticed they had some cool trendy shoes and bags as well. There was a lot to admire but one of our favorites was their jacket collection shown in the image below. Overall if you are a fan of Turkish designs, you would really like their collection. We noticed that not all of the products we saw at ISNA Bazaar are online so you might want to check with them for their full collection.

Our most exciting visit was to the booth of Fetoun, the creators of Hijat. We first came to know about them through the Modshop by Sadeel Allam. Hijat in our opinion is a hat and hijab in one, that is a new creative and trendy but comfortable way to wear a headscarf. They have four different styles of Hjats titled Breeze, Nana, Munnah, and Nora. Faten, the sweet designer was kind enough to do a couple of how-tos for us with two of their fancy scarves that you could wear at a wedding or any formal event. See the images below. It was really cool to see her put together the two styles in person and her fans who stopped by only had good things to say. Currently they are mostly focused on providing hijats, scarves, and skirts. In the future, they also plan to introduce garments in there collection In shaa Allah.

In the end, we just want to say that we are glad that we decided to go check out the ISNA bazaar. It was not only informative but very inspirational to meet so many talented and creative emerging designers. Maa shaa Allah they are all working very hard and doing a wonderful job in bringing us some really cool and trendy modest fashion pieces. Unfortunately, we did not come across any bridal wear designs this time but we hope we get to see them in the future In shaa Allah.

Our favorite video pick this time is of a bridal hijab styling tutorial by an expert from Singapore. The very talented designer and fashion stylist, Adlina Anis put together this really nice tutorial for anyone who prefers to style their own hijabs for their weddings, engagements, or themed parties. She also shows you how to accessorize a hijab using a long necklace in case you don't have any head jewelry accessories. We really like how quick it is to create this simple and elegant style (less than 2 minutes). Granted you are not one of those who have stabbing or hand-suddenly-starts-shaking-while-using-sharp-pin issues! If you don't suffer from such a problem, then good! Reema and Asir's pink and purple winter wedding color theme reminds us of Radiant Orchid (PANTONE® 18-3224) Pantone's color of the year. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute® describes the color as “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.” This is a perfect summary of how we feel and think as we go through the beautiful colors, decor and the overall ambiance created in Reema and Asir's Radiant Orchid wedding reception. We requested Reema to share some words on her color and decor choices (see in cursive).

The color theme came about with my love of purple. Have always loved the color and at the same time being a December wedding wanted to have a lot of white and crystal elements. Since my outfit was a magenta/pink I thought about incorporating some pink florals into the decor to tie all the colors together. My bridesmaids wore purple with magenta trim.

I also wanted a simple yet elegant stage. The white chiffoun draping gave it the soft winter romance that I wanted and adding a crystal chandelier but with a flora ring softened the look from being too cold. Colored water in cylinder vases with crystal ribbon added the right touch of color and sparkle.

The cake was done in an "ombre" style. I had seen cakes like this in various magazines and loved its simple elegance. Since all my decor was leaning towards white and glass, a white cake felt lost and purple just seemed odd color for a cake. This was the perfect match for tying all the elements together.

Our favorite video pick for the week is of a beautiful wedding makeup tutorial by the very talented celebrity UK based makeup artist and the founder of makeup line 'Artist of Makeup' Zukreat Nazar . She was inspired to create her own version of a bridal makeup look based on the royal bride Kate Middleton's wedding makeup.
