How to Overcome the Fear of Public Speaking

At one time in my life, like most people, I was terrified of public speaking.

I remember one moment particularly clearly. My classmates were waiting for me to read a paper I’d written—an experience, I’m sure, many remember from high school and college. While a part of me was concerned about the views of my peers—I wouldn’t like to embarrass myself in front of them, after all—I was more concerned with what my professor would think. He was pretty strict, and I knew if I’d written something subpar he’d be the first to point it out.

Having dealt with anxiety for most of my life, I recognized the symptoms: pounding heart, cold sweat, this weird tingling down my arms and wrist, and the immense desire to run and hide back in my dorm. I think it might’ve been good the clock was behind me, or I would’ve been checking that constantly, rather than focusing on my audience.

Happily, however, one of my high school teachers gave me some helpful advice on overcoming a fear of public speaking—focus above people’s heads, rather than looking at their eyes. Needless to say, I survived the experience.

Public speaking terrifies a lot of people; in fact, for a long time it topped the list of personal fears, and is still rather high in the present day. If you’re scared of speaking in front of crowds, you’re in good company—even people like Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln tried to avoid public speaking for a long time.

If you want to overcome these fears, then there are a lot of options you can use. Here are some useful tips and tricks that helped me, as well as many others.

1. Practice, Practice, Practice

Feeling like you don’t know your material is a major reason that people are afraid of public speaking. Naturally, the easiest method to fix this is to practice constantly.

Take the time to create your presentation on PowerPoint, sites like Visme, or on paper well in advance so you have time to tweak the information. Go over the work several times and get a feel for how it’ll flow when given to an audience.

Creating questions you think the audience might ask—and then researching the answers—can help you further prepare. If you’ve researched and studied your topic well, you’re more likely to feel at ease once you start talking about your work.

Dr. Ivan Joseph illustrates how this method helped him. He stood in front of his mirror and practiced his speech to himself first, then to his family and peers. While he was nervous practicing in front of a crowd, the informal setting allowed him to hammer out his familiarity with his work in a safer setting. His nerves were gone by the time he had to speak to much larger crowds, since he’d already given the speech so many times.

For myself, I found making flashcards to practice from helped. I’d include small key notes, and then forced myself to try and remember and fill in the blanks. I kept them with me when it came time to speak, just in case I needed something to trigger a memory, but I’d already practiced the speech enough that I hardly used them.

2. Find Something More Powerful Than Fear

Fear can be a terrifying, all-consuming emotion—but so can many others. Speaking about something you’re passionate about can help drive the fear into a corner where it’s manageable.

Remember that Gandhi example from the opening? His fear was so severe that he struggled to even get out a few sentences in his younger years. What finally motivated him to overcome his fears of public speaking was the fact that he found something greater than himself that he felt he had to advocate—seeing India as an independent nation.

When you’re passionate about something, you’ve likely got a lot of facts down already, since you’ve probably done a lot of research on your own. Moreover, finding a topic you’re passionate about will make you more comfortable speaking on it.

Personally, I’ve found some of my best presentations involve something that I enjoy talking about. It makes the topic easier to research and present, and I feel less like I have to prove myself and more like I can focus on what I love. It helps build confidence in your topic.

Starting with a topic you’re comfortable with can help you prepare to deal with topics you might not know as well in the future.

3. Think About How You Present

What tricks have you already tried while giving a presentation? What do you typically do and tell yourself? These are all things to think about, because they can help make—or break—your mentality while speaking.

David Carbonell has a helpful suggestion: create a list of all the things you do and tell yourself while in front of a crowd. Take a few minutes just to write everything down then, at the end, go over what you’ve written.

Carbonell lists some common things people do when they fear speaking to an audience: avoiding looking at the audience, reminding yourself that it’ll be over soon, going through the speech as fast as possible, and other similar methods. However, these methods can actually make you more anxious—talking faster, for example, makes your breathing stilted, which resembles a fear response.

Carbonell’s suggestion? To accept the fact that you’re afraid, and face it head on.

Warren Buffett proves how successful this method can be. Buffett avoided anything to do with public speaking as much as possible—including a course on the subject, which he attempted to take but dropped out of. Eventually, however, he realized the only way to beat his fear was to face it, and enrolled in a course with similarly-scared people.

Brian Scudamore shares similar sentiments, saying, “What’s helpful is acknowledging that we get nervous because we care deeply about the audience and our message.”

Easier said than done. So what’s something you can do before the speech to prepare a little? Go back to the list. Create a new one of all the things you fear will happen during the speech, and then rationalize—why would someone say this? Is this really true? Encourage positive thoughts about yourself and your work, and think in calming terms: “It’s just a speech. It’s not a big deal. I’ve got this.”

4. Relaxation Exercises

Of course, if you’re a generally anxious person, it helps to find a way to actively relax and calm your nerves.

Brian Tracy has a particularly interesting method in the form of meditation. He notes that meditating for five minutes a day can help release stress and clear your mind.

A common trick is to take deep breaths. Doing this before giving a speech can help ground you; much like how rapid, sporadic breathing increases a fear response, a deep breath can simulate being in a relaxed situation. It can also help you take a step back from the moment and consider any fears with a more level head.

This can even help when actually giving a presentation. If you notice yourself speaking too quickly, you can pause and take a few deep breaths, then resume at a calmer pace. Pausing for one deep breath whenever you notice a fear response can help get you through a difficult patch and, once you know you can do it, it gives you the confidence that you can do it again, helping to allay some of the fears.

5. Be Yourself

Related to finding a topic you’re passionate about, probably the subject you understand best is, well, yourself. Speaking on personal experiences and your own feelings means there’s less research, and less chance that you’ll stumble and forget something.

Brian Scudamore talks about this in his article, as well, where he explains that one of his greatest speeches was given not on company practice, but on life lessons he’d learned from very personal experiences. He explains that this allowed him to connect to his audience better, something they recognized.

Being honest and simply speaking about your own experiences and beliefs can be terrifying, but also freeing. You don’t have to make anything up; you just say what you know. It can also give your presentations the most power.

Joel Osteen knows something of these struggles. When his father died, he was encouraged by his family to take the stage and preach. People often compared him to his father, bolstering his insecurities.

Osteen’s solution was, as mentioned above, to think about himself differently—not as someone “not as good” as his father, but as himself, and to find positive qualities about himself.

Relatedly, it can help to not focus so much on the audience and what they think. This is your presentation; the topic and your own experiences with it are what’s important, not what the audience thinks. Focus on your research and your feelings, and speak about them, blocking what the audience might think from your mind.

If you start a web site from the ASP.NET Empty Web Site template, the first thing you’ll want to do is to add a web form to the web site. When I added the form shown in this figure, for example, files named Default.aspx and Default.aspx.cs were added. Then, Visual Studio displays the aspx file for the web form as you’ll see in the next figure. To add an existing web form from another web site, you can use the second procedure in this figure. IIS stands for internet information services. IIS is used to provide web hosting service or we can say it is used to provide web services. In web services Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is used or some times for security reasons we can enable HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Security) which provides security, integrity and encryption to our data. In case of HTTP, it works on 80number ports and in case of HTTPS; it works on 443 number ports.

In window 2000, IIS is by default install which means 80 number ports is by default open, which may arise some security issues. But in window server 2003, IIS is not installed by default; we can install it according to our requirement. WWW, which is called World Wide Web, is its sub component, which is automatically installed when we install IIS.

IIS also play a very important role with Exchange server 2003 (Mail Server). Because Exchange Server uses some windows component like SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), WWW (World Wide Web), asp.net all these components are required for the proper functionality for the Exchange Server.

Exchange Server 2003 is a Server Software. We can access it by mail client software, in which outlook web access (OWA) play a very important role. Outlook web access support provided by IIS Server.

Installation of IIS

(1) Window server 2003 must be required.

(2) Go to control panel -> add/remove programs -> add/remove windows components -> then application services -> detail.

(3) Then check the check box of IIS.

(4) You can also check its sub components from its IIS details.

(2) IP address of IIS, select it from list. Port no = 80, Host Header Value=

(3) Local path of your Home Directory c:\website\msn.

(4) Permissions.

Configuring first page of web site

Select your web site from list in IIS manager. Then right click on it-> Then properties->documents tab Then click on add button. Now type the simply name of web page. Now place it in the top of the list by clicking on moves up button. Click Apply, ok.

Web site

Web site is a collection of web pages. One web page contains the reference of second web page according to the requirement of the topic. These references are stored in the hyper reference links, which is also called hyperlinks. Hyperlink is a part pf anchor tag.

Virtual directory

IIS server support virtual directories. In real world, virtual directory is a folder which is not available in to your Home Directory. By using virtual directory, we can display contents and we can separate our html files from other web pages on the web site.

Create a sub folder in your home directory. Place a html file in the sub folder with the same name as you provide first page of the web site. Open IIS manager. In the left pane, Select your web site from the list, right click on it. Then new-> then virtual directory.

A virtual directory wizard appears on your screen. Type the alias name, which is related to your topic. On the next, type the local path of your sub folder. Then click next to finish.

A virtual directory is display in the list under your web site. It will display with gear type icon. Right clicks on your web site, then click explore. Now your IIS manager displays all the files in the detail pane. Now select your file. Right click on it then open with notepad. Now create a hyperlink of virtual directory.

Virtual web hosting

We can run multiple web sites with multiple IP addresses means each web site has unique IP address. But we can provide multiple web site service with single IP address by using Host Header value. In other words, Host Header value is a fully qualified Domain Name. To do this we have to register multiple Domain names over the internet and then we have to add ‘A Record’ (Host Record). In each domain, here Host Record means public IP address of your web server.

When any internet client wants to communicate or access our web site then his query goes to DNS server over the internet. Now DNS server resolve name to IP address of the Host computer. Here host computer is a web server. Now query shifted to your web server. Your web server listen the request and port no. 80 and reads the host header value then check its configuration if found then respond back to the requesting client.

In case of multiple web site hosting services, other multiple domain name have same IP address when your web server receives multiple request with same IP address, same port no. 80 but with different host header value then your web server differentiate the request by reading the host header value. So in this way we can provide multiple web site service by using single IP address. This process is called virtual web hosting and this is possible with the help of domain name server (DNS).

Assigning Host Header value to existing web site

Configure or create a zone in DNS server. Add host record or ‘A record’ by right click on your zone. Now open web server. Expand web site container in the left pane. Select your site from the list. Then its properties. On general tab, click on advance button. In the multiple identity section. Select the IP address from list. Then click on edit button. Now type the host header value in the given dialog text box. Click apply, ok.

Configuring Alias record in DNS server

We can assign multiple identities to a single web site means we can assign or call any particular web site with alias name with the help of DNS server.

To do this, first of all we have to create a zone in DNS server then we will add Alias record by right click on your zone.

In the alias record dialog box, type the simple alias name of your web site. Then type the original fully qualified domain name.

Web server side configuration of alias name

Open web server. Create a new web site with host header value or we can select existing web site. Then its properties, on general tab click on advance button. Backup and Restore of IIS configuration

Open IIS manager from Administrator Tool. In the left pane, right click on local server. Then all task -> then Backup & Restore.

A Backup & Restore dialog box appears on your screen. Type the name of Backup. Here you can encrypt your Backup by using password. To do this select the check box of encrypt with password. Now type the password and click ok.

To restore the last configuration or backup again, right click on server local. Then all task, then Backup & Restore configuration. Now select your backup from the list and click on restore button. It will ask you password type the password and again click ok.

Securing your HTML files in IIS

NTFS provide us file level security. So we can secure our html files by placing our home directory on NTFS disk drive. By default everyone has right to access the web pages. Every user is a member of users group. We remove the users group from the html file access list (Access Control List-ACL) and we can add some of the users in the ACL list. When a user accesses the web page that page demands authentication. If the user information matches with ACL list then he can view the web page otherwise not.

Steps: -

Open IIS Manager.

Select any configure web site. Right click on it. Then explore it in the detail pane. It will show all the html files.

Now select your first web page -> Properties -> click on security tab.

Then click on Advance button. A special permission dialog box appears on screen. Select users group from the list.

Deselect the checkbox allow inheritance checkbox option.

Another dialog box appears on screen. Click copy button. Now click close.

Now select your users group from the list on security tab and click remove.

Now click on add button and add the users whom you want grant permission to access this web site.

Click ok. And Click apply ok.

Authentication

We can secure our web site by enabling Authentication. By default anonymous access authentication is enable, in which everyone has right access the web site.

Authentication means every user who wants to access web site have to prove his identity means he must deliver username and password, which is available in local database in workgroup environment or in Active directory database.

There are three types of Authentication: -

(1) Anonymous Access

(2) Basic Authentication

(3) Integrated Window Authentication

Anonymous access

In this Authentication, only valid username is required. No need to provide your identity. This type of authentication overwrites other authentication method. If we want to enable another authentication method then we have to disable anonymous access authentication.

Basic authentication

This is a second type of authentication. In this type, a valid username & valid password is required. This authentication is not a secure authentication because it sends the user information in clear text or plain text, which creates some security issues. For example: - in case of hub, any third person can capture the data by using third party software. So he can analyses and read your user information.

Integrated windows authentication

This is a most secure method in authentication type. In this type, a valid username & valid password is required. It sends user information in encrypted form by using HASH algorithms (MD5-Message Digest 5, SHA1). In this type Kerberos protocol is used means Active Directory must be required. For the proper functionality of this type anonymous access must be disabling.

In case of mail server, we can enable this type of SMTP server to control the junk emails.

Steps to enable authentication

Open IIS Manager.

Select your configure web site -> properties -> click on directory security tab.

In the authentication section, click on edit button.

Deselect the option of anonymous access. By default integrated windows authentication checkbox is selected.--Now click apply, ok.

Restriction by using IP Address

We can allow or deny computers by using their IP Address and IP Subnet. This restriction will also apply on our web site. In this process, we have to decide whether computers are more.

We will decide our deny list according to the no. of computers to be deny. We will also deny according to the IP Subnet.

Steps to enable IP restriction

Open IIS Manager.

Select your configure web site -> Properties -> Directory Security Tab.

In the IP restriction section, click on edit button.

For example, let's say you receive 3,000 visitors from keyword “x” which generates 50 orders; your conversion would then be 3.33% (100/3,000). If you notice that keyword “y” generates 1000 visitors, but only one order (0.1% conversion), you would know which keywords to focus your time and efforts on in your search engine optimization strategies. If you have optimized for many long tail and generic keyword phrases, you are most likely going to find a mixture of both in the conversion.

Simply by signing into one’s Microsoft SkyDrive account, users will instantly have access to all of the files, settings, and preferences they have been saved, regardless of the device they’re using. Furthermore, SkyDrive automatically synchs up with online social networking and file sharing sites, such as Flickr and Facebook, to keep users files and photos updated.

3. App Store - With Windows 8, Microsoft is finally entering the apps marketplace. In this new version of Windows, users will have easy access to the Windows Store which will allow them to buy the apps they want to customize their user experience. Each downloaded app will be usable on up to five different devices.

4. Charms - Windows 8 also introduces some new features of usability that the company is calling “charms”. Essentially, charms are shortcuts that make navigating around a Windows 8-powered device simpler for users. The charms bar offers simple access to functions such as “search” and “settings” and can be customized by users with their most-used shortcuts.

5. Updates to Internet Explorer/Safety - Finally, this version of Windows also means that users will be seeing an updated version of Internet Explorer. The new version is optimized to fully utilize the entire screen with navigation controls that fade away when a user is browsing a website and reappear when the mouse is moved. This newest version of IE also makes good use of HTML5 for a more seamless and integrated browsing experience. On top of the changes in IE 10, Microsoft is also introducing Defender as a part of Windows 8. Defender works in the background and identifies when a device has been compromised by malware of a virus. When a threat has been recognized, Defender attempts to isolate the threat and remove it from the device. If a user prefers to use different anti-virus software, Defender can easily be turned off in favor of the other.

Smartphones are becoming more and more popular. Along with their ability to make phone calls, send texts, read emails and scour the Internet comes a great variety of apps that allow smartphone users to find an array of information or perform a variety of tasks. Everything from gaming to shopping to applying makeup and learning how to cook can be found on a smartphone app.

If you are a new smartphone user, you can be overwhelmed with the amount of applications available at your fingertips. You may download everything or be unsure where to begin. Lucky for you, we're here to help. The following are five apps that you must have.

1. Find My iPhone/Locate My Droid

Depending on which type of smartphone device you have, you will want to download Find My iPhone or Locate My Droid immediately. Both apps are used to locate your phone if stolen or missing. Using another device, you can enter your information into the app to locate your phone. You can either see the location of your phone using the app’s map, or you can schedule a sound to play in order to locate it—even if your phone is currently placed on silent.

Find My iPhone also allows users to lock the phone if it is stolen as well as erase all personal information.

2. The Weather Channel

Though some smartphones may come equipped with a weather app already installed, The Weather Channel app provides more than just local weather. Through the app, users are able to view current weather conditions in their area, hourly weather conditions, 10-day forecasts as well as radar maps. Using social media while on the go is more popular than using these sites while stationary. Having instant access to your favorite networks allows you to be constantly in the know as well as allowing you to update your information or access certain information whenever you need it. Plus, having these apps on your phone is a great way to kill time while waiting at the doctor's office or standing in long lines at the grocery store.

5. Your Bank

Most popular banking franchises have mobile apps that allow users to check balances, transfer money throughout accounts, pay bills and even deposit checks all from the convenience of your smartphone. If you forgot to pay your phone bill, you can do so through your phone while sitting in a taxi. If your checking account is running low on funds, you can transfer money from your savings account without traveling to the bank.

While having access to this information is great, it is a good idea to not save your username and password to the mobile app. This way, if your phone is ever lost or stolen, the thief will need your username and password in order to access the information. If you had this info saved, simply opening the app would provide them with instant access to your money.
