What size electric heating do I need?

The first thing to consider is the size of the electric radiator. In order to ensure this is correct, you should measure the length and width of the rooms in which you want to install the heaters. With the length and width measured, you can multiply them to get the area of the room in square feet, and you should multiply this number by 10 to find the base wattage for the heater you need.

Take the base wattage figure, and divide it by 250 to find the wattage provided per running foot. This means that if your wattage figure were 1500, the length of the heater you need is 6 feet (1500/250). Electric baseboard heating units are available from two to ten feet, so there is bound to be a size suitable for your need. If the value is not a whole number, you should round up to the next value.

Where should I place the heater?

The Back Board

It also makes it far easier to mount to the wall, and more resistant to twisting (or ‘racking’) which is a distinct possibility when mounted – especially if the wall is less than flawless.

After you’ve built the carcass, you have two options. Firstly, tape can be applied to the front edges. Second, you can build a solid wood frame to cover the exposed edges. Both choices are popular. The frameless style is more after the European fashion, whilst the face frame is more associated with North America.

Before embarking on construction, do some research, especially if you haven’t had any experience before. If possible, take a woodwork class in the evenings.
