While Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing isn’t sure if
he’ll be ready for the first practice of the team’s upcoming training camp, he
did tell reporters – including Nick Scurfield of HoustonTexans.com – that he’ll
“definitely” be on the field for the first game of the regular season.

“My return is right around the corner, so that’s a good
feeling,” Cushing said on Monday after the Texans’ first practice of OTAs. “I
can definitely tell you I’ll be ready for the first game of the season, and I’m
pretty sure I’ll be ready for the first practice come training camp.”

Cushing is returning from the significant knee injury he
suffered last season. He tore his ACL last October during a game against the New York Jets, which ended his 2012 season. He’s since been rehabbing feverishly in hopes of returning stronger than before.

While Cushing will not return to practice until training
camp in July, he has been running, squatting jumping and working on position drills throughout his rehab process. He feels “great,” adding that he believes
he’s doing everything he can at this point.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo underwent a minor surgical procedure to remove a cyst from his back last month, according to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas. The surgery will sideline Romo through organized team activities (otherwise known as OTAs), and sources tell ESPN Dallas that it could keep the quarterback out until training camp.

While some sound concerned about Romo's ability to participate in training camp, the quarterback isn't worried. He told reporters that he expects to be ready to suit up with the rest of his teammates when camp opens on July 19.

"If this was the regular season and I had to play next
week, I could,'' Romo told the newspaper. "This is just about being smart.
That's why I did it now. This will have no effect on training camp. No way will
it have an impact. And I still think there's a good chance I'm on the field for
minicamp.''

The injury isn't expected to be a long-term concern, as the procedure was a precautionary measure. It removed a cyst which has been the source of a constant back ache, according to Romo. It's not clear if the cyst was the result of one specific event, and it's also unknown how long Romo has been dealing with the ailment.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III continues
to recover from the significant knee injury that ended his 2012 campaign. While
his recovery is said to be going extremely well, Redskins general manager Bruce
Allen told reporters – including Mark Maske of The Washington Post – that it’s
too early to tell if Griffin will be ready to practice when the team opens training
camp in July.

“It’s great to hear the building is on schedule, ahead of
schedule, and I’ve heard all those same phrases for our quarterback,” Allen
said at a tour for reporters of the team’s under-construction training camp
site in Richmond. “It’s too early to tell right now. He is doing everything
that the doctors want him to do. He’s a great worker. I think that’s why
there’s so much optimism that he’ll be ready at the beginning. But it’s really
too premature to speculate on where his medical condition is until we give him
a physical when training camp starts July 25.”

Griffin has openly targeted the Redskins’ season opener
against the Philadelphia Eagles as his return date. Coaches are impressed with the way the quarterback has recovered, but they continue to say they are not
willing to rush him back from injury. Griffin underwent surgery in January torepair the torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee.

It appears that New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski
will be able to proceed with his recovery from a broken forearm, as yesterday’s procedure revealed the infection that was delaying progress has been cleared, according
to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Good news for #Gronk: He's out of surgery with new plates. As hoped, the infection is gone. No fifth surgery on the forearm, per source
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 20, 2013

Gronkowski underwent the fourth surgery on his forearm yesterday. It showed that the infection he was dealing with had cleared,
allowing doctors to replace the plate in his arm. This means that a fifth operation
won’t be necessary, as Gronkowski can now proceed rehabbing his arm injury.

If a fifth surgery would have been required, the start of
Gronkowski’s regular season would have been put into question. However, now
that the plate has been replaced, the tight end is hoping to be ready for the
start of training camp.

Double good news for Gronk: Training camp on time a possibility. And they can focus on his back now, hoping rehab is concurrent with forearm
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 20, 2013

Of course, Gronkowski isn’t completely out of the woods yet.
While the forearm has been garnering most of the attention, it’s recently been reported that he’s been dealing with a back injury. He’s expected to receive
continued evaluation on his back as he continues to rehab his arm.

As if the 2012 accomplishments of Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson weren't impressive enough, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News is reporting that the Pro Bowler has confirmed he played through three broken fingers.

Calvin Johnson confirmed that he played with broken fingers last season. Said he's been trying to straighten them out. No offseason surgery
— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) May 20, 2013

McCosky adds that Johnson has been attempting to straighten out his fingers (what?), adding that the wide receiver has thus far avoided offseason surgery.

It was reported earlier this offseason that Johnson had played through two broken fingers. Not sure if three makes a world of difference, but it's clear this guy -- and NFL players in general -- are tough.

Despite the damaged phalanges, Johnson was able to haul in 122 receptions for 1964 yards and five touchdowns last year.
Houston Texans linebacker Brooks Reed underwent surgery to
repair his torn groin in January following the end of the team’s season. Now,
as the Texans begin OTAs today, Reed is recovered and completely healthy,
according to Dave Zangaro of CSN Houston.

The procedure was revealed by defensive coordinator Wade
Phillips last week, and Reed told reporters yesterday that he underwent the
surgery in January. The injury that required the operation was sustained during
the team’s Thanksgiving Day contest against the Detroit Lions, and it
ultimately sidelined Reed for four games.

But the groin is no longer giving Reed any problems, as he’s
been running and lifting hard for the past three weeks.

“I didn’t think about it then,” he said. “It shouldn’t be
anything to worry about. It happened in the past and got over it. Worked hard
rehabbing it so we’re at 100 percent right now and looking to improve during
OTAs.”

The market for Green Bay Packers free agent Charles Woodson
has picked up in the last few weeks. He’s visited with several teams, and he
has at least one other meeting lined up. While the Detroit Lions are not viewed
as a favorite to ink the veteran defensive back, Woodson said he’d be willing
to join the team at the right price, according to Angelique S. Chengelis of The
Detroit News.

"If I make it out of my visit with Oakland, like I just
made it out of the visit with Denver, then I'm open," Woodson said.
"Here's the thing about the Lions, the Lions have players. What the Lions
haven't been able to do is put it together. That winning attitude and to be
able to start those winning ways, it has to start somewhere. So, would I be
open? Sure."

While Woodson would be “open” to signing with the Lions, he
also added that the “business part has to be right, too, and that's just a
fact."

Woodson visited with the Denver Broncos last week, and he’s
expected to meet with his former team – the Oakland Raiders – early this week.
While the Broncos are viewed as the favorite to sign Woodson since they are the
top contender to show interest in the free agent, nothing is imminent.

It was recently reported that New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski would require the fourth surgery on his injured forearm at some
point this week. The Boston Herald confirmed yesterday that the time would be
today, as Gronk is set to go under the knife this afternoon at Massachusetts
General Hospital.

The procedure will provide the Patriots a clearer timeframe
for Gronkowski’s potential return. If the operation reveals that the infection
that’s been in his arm has subsided, he’ll be on pace to return in time for the
start of the regular season, depending on the status of his back. However, if
the infection is found to be lingering, he’ll have to put the replacement of
the plate in his arm on hold, further delaying his return.

It will take doctors roughly a week to test for the
infection. If it’s found to have been defeated, Gronk will be able to have the
plate removed and begin his 10- to 11-week recovery process. As mentioned,
there are also concerns surrounding the tight end’s back, which could further
complicate his status.

Last week was a ‘pivotal time’ for contract extension talks
between the New York Giants and wide receiver Victor Cruz. While this was
reportedly the case, negotiations continue “moving slowly,” according to Pro Football Talk.

Talks are expected to resume this week. The Giants and Cruz
are hoping to work out a long-term contract agreement, but they’ve yet to determine
a value that both consider reasonable. The Giants would like to sign Cruz for
roughly $7 million per year, while the wide receiver and his representation are
seeking a yearly salary in the $10 million range.

At this point, Cruz has yet to sign his restricted free
agency tender, which is one-year at $2.879 million. On June 17, the Giants can
slash this to roughly $600,000, but considering this would likely aggravate
Cruz it’s not an expected move.

If a long-term deal isn't reached this offseason, Cruz would be set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2014 season. The clock is ticking, but a resolution is still expected to eventually be reached considering both teams are expressing interest in an extension.

The San Diego Chargers agreed to a two-year deal with free
agent pass rusher Dwight Freeney yesterday, according to Ian Rapoport of
NFL.com.

Source: #Chargers have an agreement in principle for a 2-year deal with Dwight Freeney
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 18, 2013

Freeney’s new contract with the Chargers will pay him $8.75
million over the next two seasons. The agreement also includes incentives,
which are likely to be tied to Freeney’s sack totals and other figures related
to rushing the quarterback.

The Chargers jumped into the pass rusher market earlier in
the week after it was announced that linebacker Melvin Ingram tore his ACL
during practice on Tuesday. San Diego met with Freeney on Wednesday and
Thursday, and talks between the Chargers and the veteran continued through
Friday and Saturday until a deal was reached.

Freeney has been an All-Pro pass rusher in the NFL,
recording a whopping 107.5 sacks during his 11 seasons with the Indianapolis
Colts. However, he struggled handling the Colts’ transition to the 3-4 defense
last season.

For this reason, most expected Freeney to join a team that
offered him an opportunity to play in a 4-3 as a defensive end. The Chargers
play a 3-4, so it will be interesting to see how Freeney fits in with the team
and how productive he is.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin has been suspended four
games by the NFL for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing
substances, the team announced yesterday.

As a result, Irvin – the 15th overall pick in
last year’s draft – will not be able to practice with the team from the start
of the regular season through Monday, Sept. 30. Irvin will still be allowed to
join the Seahawks for all offseason and preseason workouts and games.

Irvin released the following statement of apology:

"I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches and
Seahawks fans for making a mistake when I took a substance that is prohibited
in the NFL without a medical exemption," Irvin said in a statement released
by the team. "I am extremely disappointed in the poor judgment I showed
and take full responsibility for my actions. I will not appeal the discipline
and instead will focus my energy on preparing for the season so I can begin
earning your trust and respect again. I look forward to contributing to the
team the moment I return."

It just keeps getting worse for New England Patriots tight
end Rob Gronkowski. Yesterday it was reported that he would undergo his fourth
surgery on his injured forearm. Now, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that Gronk
is battling “chronic” back pain, an ailment which the Patriots are
investigating.

On Gronk: Had heard he's battling "chronic" back pain and the Patriots were looking into it. This developments explains it.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 17, 2013

Gronkowski recently underwent an MRI to determine the severity
of the back injury. He’ll reportedly meet with a spine specialist following
next week’s forearm procedure.

The last time Gronkowski faced back issues was while he was
in college. A person close to Gronk told Adam Schefter of ESPN that the injury
is minor, as there is still not concern surrounding his availability for the
start of training camp.

Quote from person close to Gronk: "He is going to be fine long term. (He is) not worried about the short term, I.e. start of training camp."
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) May 17, 2013

The back issue could be minor, but any additional injury
news involving Gronkowski is bad news. His back may not sideline him for
training camp, but there’s still a risk that his forearm will. Next week’s
reevaluation will help determine it.

The Atlanta Falcons remain confident that they’ll be able to
reach an agreement with quarterback Matt Ryan that will keep him with the team
for years to come. However, contract talks haven’t progressed much recently, as
general manager Thomas Dimitroff told Alex Marvez and James Miller on Sirius XM
radio – courtesy Pro Football Talk – that there’s nothing new to report on the
status of a deal.

“Right now there’s nothing new on the contract,”
Dimitroff said. “Understand that he will be here. We will get this done and we
would prefer to have this done sooner than later.”

The Falcons put Ryan’s new deal on the back burner while the
NFL Draft approached. Now that the draft has come and gone, it would appear
that locking Ryan up to a long-term deal is the team’s priority. Dimitroff
remains confident that an agreement will eventually be reached.

“We have a very good working relationship with CAA (and
Ryan’s agent Tom Condon) and I’m confident that this will, when the time is
right, move expeditiously to get his done,” Dimitroff said.

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will undergo the
fourth surgery on his injured forearm sometime next week, according to Ian
Rapoport of NFL.com.

From Total Access: #Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's 4th surgery is imminent, I'm told. Plan is for Monday. Took X-Rays, was examined yesterday
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 16, 2013

Patriots "expect" Gronk to be ready for camp. But do not know for sure. Doctors will examine forearm Monday, see if infection has persisted
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 16, 2013

Gronk’s arm will be examined on Monday to see if the
infection that has delayed his recover remains. If it doesn’t, then he’s
expected to be ready before or during training camp. If the infection is still
present, it will put the start of Gronk’s regular season in jeopardy, as a
fifth surgery will be required.

Having already suffered several setbacks this offseason when
it’s come to the ailing arm, the Patriots and Gronkowski are holding their
breath as the results approach. The tight end injured his forearm twice last
season, once at the end of the year and again during the playoffs.

Former Cleveland Browns kick returner and wide receiver Josh
Cribbs’ free agent tour was heating up recently, but it came to an end
yesterday when the Oakland Raiders announced an agreement with the veteran, according
to Jerry McDonald of The Mercury News.

Teams – including the Arizona Cardinals and New England
Patriots – expressed interest in Cribbs earlier this offseason, but talks
stalled over concerns about his knee. He was coming off knee surgery, and it
played a large role early on in negotiations.

Recently, Cribbs and his agent came out and said the
returner was fully healthy. At that point, Cribbs again met with teams, and
he’s now agreed to spend the 2013 campaign with the Raiders.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Cribbs will compete with Jacoby
Ford to handle return duties. He has eight kickoff returns for touchdowns over
his career, but his value has been severely limited by the recent rule that
moved kickoffs from the 30- to the 35-yard line.

Chicago Bears defensive tackle Henry Melton signed his one-year franchise tender when the team presented him with it earlier this offseason. While he certainly won't be upset to collect a cool $8.45 million this season, Melton is holding out hope that an agreement on a long-term contract extension with the Bears will materialize, according to Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune.

Melton hopes that sides can sit down and get a deal nailed out prior to the start of the regular season. However, he told reporters that he's not really thinking about his contract status that much.

“I’m not going to
really think too much about it,” Melton said. “It’s a decision that comes from
within and upstairs if they want to keep me long term. We’re just kind of
talking through some things. Everyone is getting set up and getting the drafted
guys done. Hopefully we can sit down and get something done.”

Since signing the tender, Melton has been a part of offseason workouts. If he's unable to reach an extension with the Bears, he'll be forced to play out the final season of his contract without a guarantee beyond 2013.

The New York Giants were one of the first teams to be tied to Green Bay Packers free agent Charles Woodson at the start of the offseason. Nothing has developed between New York and Woodson, but Josina Anderson of ESPN is now reporting that the Giants are interested in the veteran defensive back.

Just received another Charles Woodson update:"The Giants have just put their toe in the water again for Charles Woodson." --Carl Poston.
— Josina Anderson (@JosinaAnderson) May 16, 2013

After losing Kenny Phillips to free agency, the Giants have safeties Ryan Mundy, Stevie Brown and Antrel Rolle on the roster. Woodson could join in a reserve role, but he wouldn't be viewed as a starter in New York.

Beyond the Giants, the Oakland Raiders have also expressed interest in Woodson, as his former team reportedly has an offer on the table. Woodson recently visited with the Denver Broncos without an offer, and the Carolina Panthers have also been thrown into the mix.

While the list of potential Woodson suitors is growing, there is still a consensus that the Broncos are the favorite to land the defensive back.
Earlier this offseason, it appeared
that former top draft pick Rolando McClain would get a new start with the
Baltimore Ravens. After another run in with the law, McClain has elected to cut
that short, as the Ravens announced yesterday that the 23-year-old is calling
it a career.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome
informed reporters – including NFL.com – of the news yesterday.

"Rolando let me know that he
plans to retire from the NFL," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said
Wednesday. "We have placed him on the Reserve/Retired list."

McClain was selected by the Oakland
Raiders No. 8 overall in the 2010 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama.
Prior to being let go by Oakland, McClain totaled 274 tackles and 6.5 sacks
over 41 career games for the Raiders.

Without McClain, the Ravens will likely
move forward with Arthur Brown and Jameel McClain as their inside linebackers.
They lost future Hall of Famer Ray Lewis to retirement, while Dannell Ellerbe
and Paul Kruger exited via free agency.

Green Bay Packers free agent Charles Woodson visited with
the Denver Broncos yesterday. While the veteran left the meeting without a
contract, the Broncos are viewed by many around the NFL as the favorite to sign
him, according to Mike Klis of The Denver Post.

Woodson spent yesterday with Broncos coaches, personnel and
a few players. There isn’t a clear fit for Woodson on the roster, as Denver
already has two starting safeties that the team thinks highly of. Still, Klis
notes that prevailing thinking around the team is that Woodson would give the
Broncos’ secondary a much-needed ball hawk.

Beyond the Broncos, the Oakland Raiders have expressed
interest in Woodson, and his former team has reportedly offered him a contract.
The Carolina Panthers are also said to be interested in signing the defensive
back.

An eight-time Pro Bowler, Woodson has totaled 55
interceptions and 17 sacks during his time in the NFL.

There was some speculation that David Garrard could be the
New York Jets starting quarterback to open the regular season, as the team
develops Geno Smith and rumors of Mark Sanchez’s trade/release swirled.
However, Garrard ended that discussion yesterday, announcing his retirement
from the NFL.

Garrard told NFL.com’s Adam Schein that his knee won’t allow
him to continue his playing career.

Text from Garrard: "Having to call it quits. My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do."
— Adam Schein (@AdamSchein) May 15, 2013

Garrard has dealt with knee issues throughout his career,
and he underwent season-ending knee surgery during training camp last year. The
veteran hasn’t taken a snap in the NFL since 2010.

Without Garrard, it seems unlikely that the Jets will be
able to part ways with Sanchez, as they need a veteran presence to pair with
Smith.

The San Diego Chargers announced yesterday that outside linebacker
Melvin Ingram suffered a torn ACL, an injury that could end his season.
Considering San Diego is thin at the position, they are reportedly scrambling
to add a pass rusher. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that the Chargers are now
“very interested” in Indianapolis Colts free agent Dwight Freeney, as the sides
are set to meet today.

To answer the questions: Yes, #Chargers are very interested in pass-rusher Dwight Freeney after Ingram went down. He visits SD tomorrow.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 15, 2013

The market for Freeney and other veteran pass rushers –
including John Abraham – was expected to heat up this week. There are several
teams that have expressed interest in the defensive end/outside linebacker, and
the Chargers are now added to the list.

Abraham and Freeney have both performed best during their
time as defensive ends in the NFL. Freeney struggled to handle the transition to
outside linebacker last year when the Colts changed to a 3-4 scheme.

The New York Giants and wide receiver Victor Cruz continue
contract extension negotiations. While there are reports that sides could be
nearing a deal, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com notes that the next few days are “extremely
important” as far as the discussions go.

On #Giants/Victor Cruz: I'm told next few days are extremely important. But Giants do view him as more than a slot WR, value-wise.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 15, 2013

One major piece of the puzzle appears to have been placed,
as Rapoport adds the Giants do view Cruz as more than a slot wide receiver in
terms of his value. This means that he should be able to receive more than the
$6 million annually the Denver Broncos recently gave Wes Welker.

While talks are entering this highly important phase,
Rapoport still hears that nothing is imminent when it comes to a signing. Cruz
hasn’t made any indication that he’ll show up for OTAs, and the next big date
is June 17. That’s when the Giants have the ability to cut Cruz’s $2.8 million
free agent tender to roughly $600,000.

San Diego Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram suffered a torn
anterior cruciate ligament during organized team activities, the club has
announced.

Melvin Ingram sustained a torn ACL in his left knee during OTA practice today. No other information was released.
— San Diego Chargers (@chargers) May 15, 2013

The severity of the tear is not yet known, but if it is
complete he will undergo surgery that will likely sideline him for the entire
2013 season.

The Chargers selected Ingram No. 18 overall in last year’s
draft. He didn’t show much in his rookie campaign, as he only started one game,
totaling 16 tackles, one sack and a forced fumble. San Diego was hoping the
linebacker would be able to take a big step forward in 2013.

Fellow outside linebackers Shaun Phillips and Antwan Barnes
have left the Chargers via free agency, so the team is extremely thin at the
position. This could result in the pursuit of one of the remaining veteran
options on the open market, including Dwight Freeney or John Abraham.

It was reported yesterday that Green Bay Packers free agent Charles Woodson is set to visit with the Denver Broncos in the near future. If
talks with the Broncos fall through, Woodson could eventually land with his
former team. Josina Anderson of ESPN is reporting that Woodson has an initial
offer from the Oakland Raiders.

Charles Woodson's agent Carl Poston also told me the #Raiders just sent him an initial offer for Woodson as well.
— Josina Anderson (@JosinaAnderson) May 14, 2013

At this point, the size of the offer isn’t clear. Neither is
Woodson’s level of interest. While it’s not clear if Woodson would rejoin the
Raiders, he has said that he’d be willing to sign with a rebuilding team.

Earlier in the offseason, the San Francisco 49ers expressed
interest in Woodson. While it seemed like a fit, the 49ers have since signed a
free agent safety and drafted another.

More recently, Woodson has been tied to the Broncos, while
the Carolina Panthers are also said to have some level of interest in the free
agent.

It’s been a quiet offseason for Chicago Bears free agent
Brian Urlacher, who remains unsigned into OTAs. However, things could be
heating up, as Urlacher has been talking contract with the Denver Broncos and
Minnesota Vikings, according to Michael Sneed of The Chicago Sun-Times.

A source close to Urlacher told Sneed that the linebacker is
close to making a decision, adding that the former All-Pro is “leaning toward heading
to Minnesota.”

“It’s getting close to happening, but Brian is leaning
toward heading to Minnesota and is talking a one to two year contract,” said a
source close to Urlacher.

Since Sneed’s initial report was posted, the Broncos have
denied interest in Urlacher, and they’ve said they haven’t made any contact
with the veteran.

Bronco sources say forget about report out of Chicago about interest in Urlacher. There isn't any. No interest. No contact. End of story.
— gary miller (@thegarymiller) May 14, 2013

This contradiction could cause general hesitation when it
comes to the rest of Sneed’s story, but Urlacher has been connected to the
Vikings throughout the offseason. It will be interesting to see what follows,
but Urlacher could be close to finding a new landing spot.
