David Cameron told us in his <strong>King James speech</strong> last December that he was a “vaguely practising” sort of Christian but that even if he didn&#8217;t go to church very often he knew that Christianity had been awfully important in our country&#8217;s background and therefore we shouldn&#8217;t give up on it now.</p>
<p>David Cameron set the tone for this type of speech by talking of the need for Britain to have confidence in &#8220;its Christian identity&#8221;. (...)</p>

<span style="font-size: small;">This Sunday I heard something I heard Sasidhar Reddy, <b>Vice-Chairman of&nbsp; our </b><b>National Disaster Management Authority(<a href="http://ndma.gov.in/" >NDMA</a>)</b> asking each state to create its own a 'Disaster Response Force', just like the center's own </span><span style="font-size: small;"><b>National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)</b></span><span style="font-size: small;">. In fact, Reddy said that the response force should be capable enough to <b>manage not just natural calamities, but also manage the consequences of a chemical and biological attacks</b>.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">&nbsp;A year ago, when<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598" > <b>tsunami hit Japan</b></a>, I remember watching on TV the visuals of rising wall of sea water, floating cars,&nbsp; submerging building blocks etc and getting awestruck by the way people over there kept their cool, without any visible sign of panic anywhere. I remember sharing this thought on <b><a href="http://www.facebook.com/" >Facebook</a></b> and hearing that almost everyone of my friends thought the same.&nbsp;</span></div>

Chambers defines adaptive pluralism as:</p>
<blockquote><p>Paradigmatic elements and relationships associated with people as adaptive agents, with eclectic and participatory methodologies, and with ontological assumptions of complexity such as non-linearity, unpredictability and emergence. (...)</p></blockquote>

<p>On 28th February 2012, the US Supreme Court will rehear a landmark case brought against Royal Dutch Shell by 12 members of the <a href="http://www.minorityrights.org/5752/nigeria/delta-minority-groups.html">Ogoni </a>minority community of the Niger Delta, in which the Ogoni allege that Shell was complicit in serious human rights abuses committed against them by the Nigerian military regime in the early 1990’s. This case will determine whether corporations can be sued and held legally accountable for their complicity in human rights abuses, and if successful, will have important implications for the future of corporate accountability in the field of human rights.</p> (...)

Security forces are cracking down on the Dongria Kondh tribe as they prepare for a religious festival this weekend at the top of India’s most contentious mountain.



Hundreds are determined to attend the Niyamraja ritual in the sacred Niyamgiri Hills, which are at the center of a controversial mining project involving UK company Vedanta Resources.

<p>A three-year, multi-partner project, <em>Adaptation to climate change in Central Asia and China</em>, supported by the Asian Development Bank, has helped identify policy options that could help smallholder farmers adapt to changing production conditions.  The end-of-project workshop in Tashkent was attended by researchers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and China; Uzbek policy makers; and scientists from ICARDA and the International Food Policy Research Institute.</p> (...)

<p>GENEVA, February 27, 2012 &#8212; The independent  UN Watch monitoring group, which initiated last year&#8217;s  successful <a href="http://blog.unwatch.org/index.php/2010/09/16/global-ngo-campaign-to-remove-libya-from-the-un-human-rights-council/">NGO  Campaign to Remove Libya from the UN Human Rights Council</a>, today called on  the US, the EU and UN rights chief Navi Pillay to urge council president Laura  Dupuy Lasserre to cancel a planned resolution praising the Qaddafi regime&#8217;s  human rights record, slated for adoption in the session that opens in Geneva  today with foreign ministers attending from around the globe. <em><strong>(See  countries&#8217; praise of Qaddafi  below.)</strong></em></p>
<p>Despite the council&#8217;s own inquiry this year finding evidence of war crimes by  the Qaddafi regime, the UN Human Rights Council, according to the <a href="http://www.ohchr.org/Documents/HRBodies/HRCouncil/RegularSession/Session19/A-HRC-19-1_en.pdf">agenda</a> of  its current session, is planning to &#8220;consider and adopt the <a href="http://www2.ohchr.org/english/bodies/hrcouncil/docs/16session/A-HRC-16-15.pdf">final  outcome</a> of the review of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya,&#8221; which lavishes praise  on the disgraced regime. I first posted about <a href="http://givinginadigitalworld.org/2008/05/18/could-qr-codes-be-big-for-online-fundraising/" >the potential for QR Codes to be used by fundraisers back in early 2008</a> and, while it&#8217;s been some time coming, it&#8217;s been interesting to see how <a href="http://www.frogloop.com/care2blog/2011/8/18/qr-codes-in-action-five-nonprofits-share-their-experiences.html" >their use has started to take-off over the last year or so</a>.</p>
<p>However, as explained by Scott Stratten in the fun video clip above, right now QR Codes seem to be coming-out like a rash in a range of places where they make very little if any sense.</p> (...)

<div style="font-size: 19px;">A ferry ride and a morning of windswept adventure on nearby Catalina Island today. Some Fellows strapped themselves into a Hummer and headed for the hills; others stepped into a glass-bottomed submarine to study schools of fish in a kelp forest. The bravest rode the zip-line, speeding downhill over the island's lush valleys in a harness.</div>

<p>Climate Change will have an impact on every person in the world. It is well documented that it will impact smallholder farmers the most because of the effect on their crops. On the other hand, the effects of climatic change on trees within landscapes are often not considered. However, a<a href="http://http:0//www.worldagroforestry.org/sea/Publications/files/book/BK0149-11.PDF"> recently released book by World Agroforestry Centre</a> scientists warn that climate change will have a much greater impact on the rural poor if climate debates remain focused on forests rather than on the role of trees within multifunctional landscapes.         On Saturday we had a fabulous night at the Savana Jazz club in San Francisco, at their "Back to the Roots of Jazz" show. I had no idea what to expect, of the club or the show, but it completely surpassed all my expectations. The club itself is very small and intimate, a real 'hole in the wall' kind of place, which made the experience more personal and fun (we also somehow had the best seats in the house, which didn't hurt either). The club owner had invited several musicians from West Africa to perform a mix of solos and group performances with traditional instruments including the xylophone, the ngoni, and the drums. <br /><br />By far the most impressive was a young musician from Senegal who played the cora, a 3,000 year-old string instrument. We came across a very interesting article in the Times of India on Jan 23, 2012 which we have reproduced below. So many times we hear about some rich industrialist or professional giving away crores of rupees or we read a lot about how little we give as a nation. We found this to be a powerful example of giving even if it was giving amongst the community. Giving indeed starts with feeling of "family" and the family always extends gradually- from self to direct, then relatives, then "kinsmen" and then state &amp; eventually nation. The idea that a donor will give to anyone without any relationship is difficult and rarely practised except in Europe. (...)</div>
