Going French

It's not a hard decision. In fact, there are a number of reasons why going French is really a logical choice for me. I hate exercise, therefore I don't do it. I have a sick obsession with cool jazz (I named my son after Miles Davis and I literally own every recording the man has ever made). I love chocolate so I eat chocolate EVERY DAY, without compromise. And my philosophy with eating and weight loss is essentially, if the pants don't fit, go up a size. You always look good when you simply wear what fits.

All this being said, what really took me over the edge was this picture:

Francoise Hardy is a French singer and actress who originally made a name for herself in the 60s. Gorgeous, effortless and distinctly unaware of her beauty...or is she? Who wouldn't want that? And her voice is the icing on the cake. So, my quest begins and I've been picking up a few french inspired images to set me on my way.

The french have always appreciated the power and significance of jazz music and supported many of its best during a time when African American artists, including Davis, weren't even aloud to use the rest room in the jazz clubs they were headlining in the United States. The man was (is) a genius, not to mention he's cool as hell. Listen...

The ultimate "American in Paris" to me is Nichole of the blog Little Brown Pen. She is hilarious (check out her Twitter feed here), laid-back and, along with her husband, a curator of french color stories. And they sell the images on Etsy!

Authentic, rustic french food in my hometown at The French Pantry. It's got limited hours and is on Powers Ave...you have to see it to believe it. DELICIOUS and incredible reviews on Urban Spoon...

So, whose with me?? I'll personally supply the wine...

Pin it Forward has made it over to my little blog today! I'm extremely excited to be using the great pinterest site to gather images that represent "what home means to me." Here's a little sample of what home means to me.

I live in Atlantic Beach, Florida and living at the beach is the best decision I've ever made. You slow down immediately and never forget to enjoy the your surroundings.When we moved from our 2200 square foot, four bedroom home to our 1150 square foot cottage, we had to downsize our possessions by more than 50%. Other than marrying my husband and having our kids, it's the best decision I've ever made.

Clockwise from left: Top image - The blue lamp (which was a flesh tone until I painted it) is mine and found in a thrift store and the George Nelson bachelor's chest I found in the same thrift store for $6.99!! I know, ridiculous. The orange dessert bowls and hobnob turquoise salt bowl hold my jewelry. Both were found at flea markets. The vintage school chairs are pinned from Etsy seller Accessories Addiction. The awesome spindle back chairs with turquoise vinyl seats were a recent score on Ebay.Four for $10...not kidding. (Did I mention I am a deal hunter too?). You can read about my vintage typewriter collection here. The typewriter is a pin from Etsy seller Joe Vintage.

I don't just like vintage things, it's pretty much a lifestyle choice for me. I collect vintage typewriters, scour thrift shops and flea markets and stalk ebay for great finds.My mother and grandmother used to drag me to garage sales and flea markets when I was a kid and I never realized what an incredible mark it made on me. I learned to value real craftmanship and the value of a dollar. Thanks Mom and Grandma!

Home is so many things to me, there's not enough room in a blog post to say it all. But when it really comes down to it, home is them.

Spring Color Inspiration - Purple

Just scored these four fun chairs for the dining table. Perfect color and small profile, combined with vinyl seats and a $10 price tag via ebay (no, that was not a misprint...I got all 4 chairs for $10) equals perfect family of four seating for our little beach house.

A little light restoration and good waxing, and these will be good as new. There's nothing wrong with buying new, but when you can find unique pieces like this one second hand, why would you?

Pink isn't my favorite color, but in shades of fuschia, and used as an accent against white like in this lovely room via Elle Decor, it gives life to simple sitting room.

During a random Etsy search using the word "Spring", I came across this stunning group of small, simple portraits by Etsy seller, tastes orangey. Artist, Clare Elsaesser, describes herself in her profile as loving to "...draw people with wild hair." How can you not love an artist with that kind if inspiration.

A little bit haunting and incredibly close to how I see myself in relation to the ocean, these images really inspire me. Maybe it's my year of beach living that makes them so appealing to me or the way the stitching around the edges gives them warmth...but I really, really, really love them. I wanted to post this painting I did a while back in honor of Peggy, an inspiring lady and lover of peacocks who passed away last week. I wrote about my visit to her incredible home in this post last year.

Friends, it's been a few weeks, I know. I'm back to work full-time with a great marketing and advertising firm and I'm getting back on my feet in the business world. I'll be in full blog rotation in the next few days, but I didn't want to continue keeping you guessing as to where I'd gone to. Sometimes I struggle with the concept of keeping the blog going with so many other things that need to take precedence in my life, but then I remember that it started out as something I did for fun, to fulfill my constant need to have a creative outlet. And that's what it's going to be from here on out. I'll be posting three times a week and scheduling some posts in advance to make sure I'm consistent.

Etsy Faves/ Collections - Vintage Typewriters

I don't collect many things, but my main collection is definitely my vintage typewriters. I have four, ranging from the early 20th century to the mid 20th century. They have been picked up at estate sales, thrift stores, large flea markets or given to me as a gift. As a writer and a lover of vintage things, I feel connected to what they represent, a time way before the digital age when what you wrote and typed was one of a kind. The image above is a sampling of my own collection. My love for typewriters extends to my artwork collection as well, including this amazing print of a vintage typewriter done by local Jacksonville artist and printmaker, Barry Wilson.

Another excellent source for affordable (and not so affordable) vintage typewriters is Etsy. Below are my current personal favorites.

My Little Girl...

Today my sweet Mia turns eight. It's funny how differently you see yourself as a woman when you have a daughter. I want so much for her and I can only imagine how much my mother always wanted, and still wants, for me. I think the thing that I'm proudest of is that my little girl is so KIND. Her heart is big, and I pray that it stays that way forever.

I love you more than you can even imagine sweet girl!! Go seek your happy days and nights!

I had a wonderful 33rd birthday this weekend (Saturday the 13th was the actual day) starting with this glorious cupcake array from my husband. The man KNOWS me.

My favorite presents were the additions to my Penguin Classics collection (two in the background of this photo. I have two more on he way via Amazon.com).

Overall, it was a good day soon to be followed by another birthday mid week for my little girl!! She'll be turning 8 and I can't wait to celebrate with her. My poor husband...February is a very long month for him.

Fashion Statement - Glasses

It's time for me to think new eyewear. I've been a glasses wearer since the age of 12, wearing them all the way through high school and into my first year of college before going the contact lense route. I have been wearing my old glasses for a week due to a lovely eye issue, and as a result, I think I'd like to wear glasses again on a regular basis. Not that I won't be using contacts most of the time, especially in Florida where the need to rock sunglasses is a daily necessity, but I do really like the idea of having the flexibility of tossing them on to give my corneas a break.

There are two types of glasses wearers - the plastic frame vs. the wire frame. I personally fall into the first category. I really can't stand the flimsy feel of wire frames. I especially hate the little plastic pieces that are used as stand offs by your nose. For me, a pair of plastic frames makes a statement that glasses are a choice, not a curse. That's why I love this picture of Tina Fey. The woman is fearlessly rocking the dark plastic frame and it's the perfect mix of smart, funny woman with a side of mystery.

These are my current favorites. Strong, dark and Clark Kent worthy. And the frames are super cheap purchased online here.

Or this pair on the same site that are plastic but made to resemble the look of wood! I really love these, especially the warm brown tone of this version. It also comes in a lighter realistic disressed wood color, as well as some less real looking versions in red and purple.

This pair has a gradient from dark to light brown and a more feminine shape. Less hipster, but still interesting enough for a creative type like me.

Thoughts? Do you see me in any of these frames, or do you have a better idea of what cool glasses look like? I'd love your suggestions!

Winter Color Inspiration - Blue

Friends, I've taken a short break this week from the web. No Twitter, no Facebook, no blogging. I needed a little perspective, and I can say at the end of the week, it was a very good thing. I had planned to complete the paint job for my desk makeover, but it rained all week and paint + rain = bad. I'll be back to office related projects next week. In the meantine, I thought a little winter blue would be a nice introduction back.

Bright white, with a pop of icy blue, happens to be one of my favorite decor combos.

Vintage glass buttons. Use them in a project or just put them in a bowl for their obvious aesthetic beauty.

Office Redesign - The Style Board

Because this room doubles as a playroom for my daughter and her giant dollhouse, I'm trying to keep the decor fun AND functional. Above is my preliminary style board showing the potential purchases and how they fit in with the items I already own. Here's a breakdown:

What I already have and plan to use:

#1 - My simple, clean lined writing desk, currently a light blond wood. It's getting an overhaul with a coat of semi-gloss white paint (I'm using this image of the West Elm Parsons desk as a stand-in. Also, a very affordable option). I'm also going to rehab the desk top with this #3 faux bois wrapping paper I have. That will be next week's big DIY project.
#2 - My color palette is two fold. The first three swatches are the colors I chose personally, the second three are the ones I am stuck with because of elements in the room I have to incorporate.
#5 - My artwork. Just so happens I have two pieces that, together, fit the entire color palette. Both are small pieces I plan to group together.
#6 - My lamp. This is a previous thrift store find and rehab I blogged about here. I'll be using it as my desk lamp.
#10 - Chaise lounge that we bought for the bedroom in our last house. Our current master bedroom is tiny. Instead, it is going to be a place to sit and lounge/ read in the office.
#11 - My current inspiration wall featuring the green console table, artwork and magazine storage.

The items I plan to purchase:

#4 - This affordable desk chair. Since it's a home office, I'd like the chair to blend in and not be so noticeable. However, it still needs to be easily moveable and somewhat comfy. The SNILLE chair from IKEA is just $22.99, holla! For a girl on a budget that's just about right.
#7 - These lime green and gray zebra rugs. Two small rugs put together make an 8x10 rug. That will cover the entire room. And...wait for it...they are on clearance online at Walmart.com for $12 a piece. Ridiculous.
#8 - A doggie bed for Cricket. She follows me everywhere I go, including into the office. Right now she sleeps on a blanket, but I'd like to give her a proper bed instead. This one is online at Overstock.com for $25.49.
#9 - This Dwell Studio for Target pillow, currently $19.99, for resting our heads on while we lounge.

Grand Total - $92.47 plus tax for above purchases. I'll guesstimate about $20 for paint and supplies to DIY the desk and I think I'll end up spending between $125-$150 dollars total.

Ok, I know not everyone has furry friends, and up until about three weeks ago, neither did I. But now our family has expanded to include Cricket, a poodle shitzu mix (above with son Miles), and she's become a very important addition. In her honor, I wanted to show you some of the great handmade pet products you can get on Etsy.

Most doggie collars are pretty generic, especially if you get them at a typical big box store. If you have a pooch with personality there are so many great options for handmade collars on Etsy. This one is from seller Arlee Bee. She's got several options, including this bright floral version.

Custom dog tags can get expensive, but this cute option via Etsy seller The Two Beans, is hand stamped and completely customizable for just $14.

Have a small pet you want to tote around? Check out this reverseable pet tote from new Etsy seller Mai Pets. Looks like they just joined Etsy, but I think it looks like a great product. I would use it as a portable pet bed for travel.

If kitty cats are your pets of choice, these crocheted kitty beds are really adorable. Etsy seller Kristen Loves Dinner, will let you customize the color and put a personalized name patch in the corner.

And for the true pet lover, some personalized treats just for dogs made from scratch by 3 Dogs and a Chick.
