I caught this sculpture at the perfect time. Gorgeous. Bella.

Today I visited the Duomo!

It was about 2:00 and the crowds wern't that bad. I hate crowds and I saw a there was practically no line.

That journey up those stairs was a life changer. The power of ideas are limitless. My context was definitely changed going up there. Its not like going up some sky scraper. Ive been in taller buildings before, its the fact that every square inch of this thing was hand carved, and labored over and somehow lifted up there by people and simple pulley mechanisms; all is alot to take in. Its as epic as it gets.

Sadly the entire walk up was covered in chicken scratch from tourists who just want to get their name up. There were things like a heart with J + S and an arrow through it everywhere. There is actually alot of really shitty graffiti in Florence. Im a connoisseur of graffiti, and there is very little graffiti done with skill or taste. People just need to quit, because they suck. Fresno graffiti blows Florence graffiti out of the water.

Currently Im still living in San Luis Obispo, working on raising funds for going to the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. Im very excited to announce that I recieved unanimous acceptance by the entire faculty of the Florence Academy.

This is very exciting news. Ive been doing alot of studying of human anatomy, in anticipation for my voyage to distant lands to improove my painting and drawing skills.

I have been in shock by the great news which is why I haven't posted anything on my blog in a long time. Sorry!

Lately I have been having may revelations about time. Time is my most valuable asset. I really have an abundance of it, and I have the choice to do what I want with it, and I really don't have too many people to answer to. Its a great feeling.

I have alot of time, and not alot of stuff. Stuff like a house, and a boat, and a goat to feed, and a garden to weed, no thirsts to quench, or anything I really don't need. I have the essentials which are:

A Vehicle to move me from place to place.

Painting and drawing supplies for making art.

Computer for business, marketing, design, and to work when needed.

Phone.

Clothes.

Toothbrush.

My mom told me the saying once: "The things you own end up owning you"

I googled the saying and everyting on that saying was said to be from fight club, but Im positive that is a much older saying than fight club.

Ive been living by that saying for a while now.

Minimal expenses, minimal posessions, mazimized time.

Its the way to do it.

I had a great time last saturday taking figure drawing at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, My drawing really got a long needed tune up, and I learned a few new ways skin that cat.

Today I am in Shell beach doing a fun little project designing a user interface for a hip hop drum machine. Its coming along nicely. No details will be disclosed here though, but when its out and done I will definitely be showing you where to find it. Im really excited about this specific drum machine, because Ive always wanted to design a drum machine wit a very fluid feel to it, and I think this may be the actualization of my dreams.

I was raised around all sorts of music my entire life. My dad Merlin is an immensely talented musician who has always been into synthesizers, drum machines, and other odd music making devices for as long as I can remember, so this project hits home for me.

I have been needing to go to Art School for a while but I have been in denial that I really need to go. But now I am realizing its probably a good idea. I really like the work that comes out of the Florence Academy of Art. I think it would probably suit me best, and thats the direction that I would like to take my work.

In the meantime I have been studying light logic, and hands. I thought of an interesting way to combine the two and make a series of small paintings at the same time. The hands aren't perfect, but it was just an excersise. Heres a few of my favorites:

I Since the trade center is the source of all cockroaches in downtown fresno, I decided that it would be ideal to re-design the tower with a more cockroachy feel. I like it. Im going to continue to add details. Its kinda silly to be painting a giant painting with a tiny brush.

There was a party last night in my painting. All the bad people on the earth decided to come and swim during the sunset!

Im really excited to see how this painting is going to turn out. Ive had a really good feeling about this one for a while. I cant wait to get back over to the studio and paint some more of these people.

If you have been following me on twitter you might have noticed that I have been doing alot of painting. Usually stretches of 10+ hours a day of non stop painting. Its almost like making love all day, except im not as tired when I finish.

Ill be re-working the artworksection of my website again. I thought I liked it. But now I changed my mind and want it to be arranged differently.

Today was one of those off days where I only get small things done. Brush teeth, get gas, move things around, and just float along. No giant feats of amazingness. I think its because I was out off eggs this morning, and usually every morning I eat a huge breakfast, and that keeps me going throughout the whole day without starving. But today was just one of those days that was un-productive.

The Flooding of Fresno

So I started a new painting today. I pretty much woke up at 11:00 today and thought to myselfL " I really want to paint something crazy today. I then spent the rest of the morning until about 2:00pm working on taxes. I really hate taxes, so thats probably by inspiration for painting something so rediculous today. I thought to myself: "I think the world might just end in my lifetime. What exactly will happen during the end of the world? I bet all the land will flood." I then think to my self: "What if Fresno flooded?"

What if the Polar Ice-caps melted, and then the coastal Californian mountains broke off and fell into the sea? Then the Sierra Nevada Mountains became the new coast line, and even Fresno was submerged in ocean! I think it might happen. But im just a crazy uneducated wierdo, so what does it matter what I think.

Being a painter I have an unquenchable urge to make my idea a reality. This is the process if bringing my idea into reality.

The next step in my creative process is to make a color study in miniature. This is about 5x5 inches, and the panel I will be painting this on is 4x4 feet.

I roughly block everything in with soft vine charcoal

Then I refine with Conte A' Paris, rubbing out and erasing, and redrawing, letting my mind wander, and immagine what people would be doing if the Central Valley became the Valley of Death.

I then do some washes of Raw umber, and French Ultramarine. I make the painting a monochrmatic tone darker than a sepia tone. Then I began painting the sky.

4x4 is alot of surface to cover with oil paint in a day. Im feeling a little tired at this point. Its strange, but I agree with Salvador Dali, that you paint better when you are tired.

The studio is becoming a mess.

At this point Im going to have to let the Sky dry and move on to the rest of the painting. Ive covered the entire panel already in paint. Kept the things I like, and got rid of what I didn't like. I cant wait to get started on painting all the little people going for a swim. I think That will have to come tomorrow.

Im really glad that I have been making these studies, because I feel that they really have helped me alot through this painting.

Miniature Color Studies

Epic twilight mountain study. I was really trying to create atmosphere with this one. I wanted it to look like light was passing through smog, or fog, volcanic ash or something to that effect. I really like the light areas at the peaks of the mountains. The gloomy twilight has always captivated me. The colors that were used with these two warm studies are: Raw umber, burnt sienna, cad red, cad yellow, yellow ochre, and minimal titanium white.

With this study I was trying to portray the last glimpse of light on an earth that looks as if it were filled with smoke , and the sun was just low enough to pass through the gap inbetween the earth and the clouds.

This color study was done only with French Ultramarine, Titanium White, Raw Umber. Just three colors creaates a moonlit appearance. I suspect that many of the oldmasters would paint their underlayers in a similar fashion to create the dead layer which is supposed to look moonlit.

I painted a few more, but these are my favorites. Until next time.
