The 20th annual Texas Natural and Western Swing Festival May 19

The time to get ready for another great Texas event is here!

The 20th annual Texas Natural and Western Swing Festival celebrates Texas history, Texas traditions and Texas music just down the street from Palazzo apartments at the San Marcos Courthouse Square and on the San Marcos River. Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 19.

The event is free and open to the public. Bring your friends, family, and don’t forget your lawn chairs to the River and enjoy the music!

The Texas Natural Festival will be held from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. at the Courthouse Square in San Marcos with live music, food booths, Texas-made arts and crafts, farmers market, children’s art booth, a trail ride encampment, antique stagecoach, blacksmiths, and authentic chuck wagons with Dutch oven cooking demonstrations and more.

Morning performances feature Tony Harrison and the Hot Texas Band (9:30-10:45 a.m.); and Picker’s Paradise with Erik Hokkanen, Neal Clausnitzer, Herb Remington, Rick McRae, Redd Volkaert, Danny Levin, Dayna Wills, Dick Gimble and more; (11 to 12:15 p.m.)

Afternoon shows feature Al Dressen’s Super Swing Revue (12:30 – 1:45 p.m.); Tribute to the Fiddle, (2-2:15 p.m.) Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition (2:30 – 3:45 p.m.) and Carolyn Martin (4-5 p.m.)

A free shuttle to all events will be available from Strahan Coliseum parking lot. (Exit I-35 #206 and follow the signs).

Free computer classes at San Marcos library

If you would consider yourself a little old school and not really into technology, I really don’t blame you. With all the technological changes and upgrades that are constantly happening, there’s just so much to keep up with! So, I understand if you never really got down to mastering all of what your computer can do.

But if you want to catch up a little bit, you certainly have a great chance of gaining a few computer skills San Marcos close to home. You don’t have to go too far from Palazzo apartments to get a little help with your computer skills thanks to the local library.

The San Marcos library offers free computer classes each week in basic computing skills, Internet, email, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. The classes are self-paced with an instructor and textbook to be used during class. Call 512.393.8200 to add your name to the waiting list.

We’re all looking for ways to go green around town. And once you’ve made some progress at home at the Palazzo apartments, it may be time to take your green efforts to the office. The office is a great place where we all spend a ton of time.

Here’s two ways to go green at your local office.

Reduce Your Unwanted Mail: Each year junk mail, including unsolicited mail to businesses, ends up as 4 million tons of solid waste. E-mail or call direct-marketing companies to remove your name or those of former employees from their mailing lists-some companies have Web sites that allow for removal. You also can register with a comprehensive junk-mail reduction service for a small fee. Search for “junk mail” online to find some of these services. By taking your name off marketing mailing lists, you can help reduce waste.

Recycle Paper Products: Recycling paper products-including newspapers, paperboard boxes (like cereal and cracker boxes), cardboard boxes, junk mail, and office paper-saves money. That’s because recycling paper fiber is cheaper than growing, harvesting, and processing trees. Texans dispose of enough trash every two weeks to fill the Astrodome. Recycling one ton of paper is the equivalent of using between 17 and 31 trees to produce paper and saves 7,000 gallons of water and 4,000 kilowatts of electricity-enough power for the average home for six months.

Nearby zoos to visit in South Texas

We all know South Texas has some incredible attractions. One such attraction is the zoo!

Whether you’re a fan of animals or just looking for a way to spend a lazy Saturday near Palazzo apartments, the zoo is a great place to enjoy nature not too far from home.

There are a few nearby zoos to visit near San Marcos and here’s a look at them!

Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary: The mission of Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is to assist animals in need through rescue, rehabilitation and education. Last year, over 175000 people visited Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary.

Capital of Texas Zoo: The Capital of Texas Zoo is one of Greater Austin’s most exciting animal adventures. Just 20 minutes from downtown Austin, the Zoo is home to over 500 rare and beautiful wild animals.
