Episode 49: The Battle

 

Summary:

As dawn nears, Erin takes out her pocket knife and looks it over. Shunan’s army lines up. Tairan approaches Chok as he cleans his Touda and thanks him for taking care of it over the years. He also mentions how it’d be nice if they didn’t march, and Chok wonders if it’s okay to say that, but Tairan reminds him of outside countries that threaten their borders, and that he became a Touda rider to protect Ryoza. He then asks Chok to leave since they’ve been ordered to take their positions. The march will commence on Shunan’s command.

Shunan thinks back to his proposal to Seimiya 4 months ago, and her assertion that he only wanted to marry her for the sake of Ryoza. On Seimiya’s side, she glances over at the rolled-up blue flag. Damiya approaches her, and says the sun will soon shower over Tahai Aze. He asks that she show her divine beauty to the Grand Duke and his cohorts at that moment.

Back in Lilan’s cage, she bashes against the cage and Nukku and Mokku argue over the reason. Erin soon arrives and gets her to calm down. Nukku and Mokku wonder if she wants their kebabs, but Erin says she hasn’t eaten anything since arriving here, rationalizing that she’s excited about the scent of Touda carried on the wind. Erin then tells her that the Touda are still far away, and to calm down. Damiya arrives, prompting Nukku and Mokku’s exit, and marvels at her ability to calm a beast-lord. He says that the wind has changed and they may have a blizzard, but he will have her fly anyway. Erin corrects him by saying Lilan is the one that will fly. He says that he’ll have the ceiling removed when the time is right; when she sees the sky, she should fly out, for that is her role, he claims.

Now equipped in battle gear, Shunan listens to the soldier’s chants as he watches day break. Elsewhere, Nason stands and asks Soyon to watch over Erin. Back at Kazalm, Esal and the others wait anxiously to hear of what will pass. Shunan, his father, and the other soldiers are now armed on their Touda. In just moments, he gives the order to march forward. Ngan watches from above and rhetorically asks what comes after dawn, to which he answers, “night.” Lilan senses their approach and growls. Erin stands next to the Queen and Damiya and watches the Touda approach. Damiya says that the soldiers are just bluffing, and that once Lilan flies everything will return to normal. However, Erin is resolved to not use beast-lords in a fight between humans, regardless of what happens.

Damiya lectures Seimiya on how there is nothing to fear and that the Grand Duke, his army, and everything in the world are her property, all the while holding back deceitful smirks. Seimiya thinks back to her grandmother’s rule. She wonders if the Grand Duke’s men will no longer despise war if she accepts them, and then shakes it off, stating she will find a path where that isn’t the reality: one which will maintain their country without war. Damiya notices Seimiya’s strange movements and she calls on Nami to bring her the blue flag. Damiya questions her intent and Seimiya says she will not wed the man that plotted her grandmother’s murder. A cold wind picks up and he sighs, calmly reminding her about the miniature garden he gave her. He says what’s important is to make a mold that’s perfect, and when that is provided, the people will live comfortably. Regardless, Seimiya says she does not wish to live in a box that never changes, further asserting that the child between her and Shunan may not be a god, but will have the freedom and will to choose his or her own path.

An annoyed Damiya stops Nami and the others from handing over the flag, and, in response, Seimiya orders the Sezans to seize it. However, she finds herself alone, and Damiya reveals they are under his command. He then turns to Erin and commands her to fly with Lilan. However, Erin takes out her knife and points it towards her neck, stating she will not obey him. Two guards then approach with Mokku and Nokku as hostages. Yet, they tell her not to worry about them but ask she not kill herself, noting that everyone at Kazalm is waiting for their return. Damiya taunts her to go on with the deed, and a distracted Erin is restrained by one of the masked men. However, the disguised Ial knocks out her restrainer and manages to take Damiya hostage. They then proceed to successfully raise the blue flag.

Seeing the symbol, Shunan’s army stops and rejoices in victory. An enthused Shunan hops off his Touda and races toward a delighted Seimiya. However, Damiya grins and goes on about the Touda army protecting them. Clouds form over the area as the ground trembles. An army of crestless Touda then ravage the flanks of Shunan’s forces. Erin, Seimiya and the others watch, horrified at the carnage. Ngan reveals himself to be its leader, and accuses Shunan of treason.

Damiya laughs at the turmoil and continues to marvel at the godly aura from Seimiya. A frustrated Erin turns to him, realizing he was behind this as well. He goes on to say that only the Queen can save their country.

On the battlefield, one man runs away in fear, stepping on the corpse of the former Grand Duke. Shunan argues with Ngan as a mass group of Touda approach him. The Queen pleads for someone to save Shunan, and this event reminds Erin of Soyon’s situation. “Just watching”… those words resound through Erin, along with visions of her and Lilan. Consequently, she tells Seimiya that she will go. She flies towards the battlefield with Lilan, and thinks how she is yet another foolish human who would use her as a weapon. Even so, saving one precious life is reason enough, and she orders Lilan to go to where Shunan is.

My immediate impression posted on the myanimelist forums:

I love this anime, and the characters, especially Erin. But right now I’m just really agitated about episodes 48 and 49. I felt like the two could have been combined if they went easy on the flashbacks. Another thing that bothers me is that Erin, even with the talks with Ial and Seimiya, STILL pulls out her knife. Finally, Nukku and Mokku, characters I don’t even really like, tell her something I wish somebody (Ial, Esal, spirit of Jone?– maybe they could have had an episode titled “Ghost”, etc) would have told her directly a long time ago: “Don’t $#*)ing kill yourself!” THANK YOU, guys!

Regardless, I’ve enjoyed this anime and even if episode 50 kills off Erin or feels drawn out/rushed, I’m glad to have had the privilege of watching this.

I felt bad for Shunan’s father being killed off like that. I wonder if Tairan is also a goner? I’m wondering what’s the point of Ngan doing this since Seimiya obviously doesn’t agree with any of it. I guess Damiya may be going for broke or is trying to get Seimiya to do his bidding by holding Shunan hostage, but that plan seems to have a lot of holes; namely, there are many witnesses present to report what’s happened. I think Damiya had an effective plan while Seimiya was still clueless, but this seems like a desperate attempt to just drag everything down.

Also, that “sense of completeness” that I mentioned above are things like the real cause of the Kiba’s death (Nason claims it was Soyon but something doesn’t add up about that theory), closure with Erin and Ake’s people, and her and Lilan’s relationship. With one episode remaining, I doubt we’ll get much closure with Erin and Ake, or the Kiba. I think episodes 48 and 49 could have been combined, or that 49 could have replaced 48, while next episode would be whatever happens in episode 50, followed by a nice closure of loose ends in the very final episode.

Let me clarify the stuff with the Kibas’ death: in the beginning, we’re given things to ponder on like Erin’s observation she gives to her mom, which prompts Soyon to tell her to keep quiet. Also, in Ake’s bath, Soyon mentions that she gave up the way of the Mist People long ago. Yet, Nason claims in episode 32 that she killed the Kiba to uphold a responsibility of the Mist People to keep the Touda count low. If what he says is true, I don’t understand why Soyon would tell Erin those things in the bath, since she didn’t even know of the Mist People’s traditions. I wish it was clarified a bit more, and that was one thing I had looked forward to throughout the entire series. Now, we’re on the eve of the final episode and have only been given possible clues. I suppose it may be the author’s intention to not reveal it, as to let us sympathize more with Erin and her uncertainty of what happened during those tragic times.

In Erin’s defense, I’m not entirely sure if she’ll attack the Touda versus going in there and saving Shunan. I think she also realized that by trying to stick to her ideals of not using Lilan as a weapon, she was becoming like the Mist People and Nason: allowing someone to die in front of them to uphold their beliefs. Because of that, she decided to break her former resolve and do for Seimiya and Shunan what I think she wished someone else did during her mother’s execution.

I like how they transitioned to the new ending sequence. I wondered whether they would show what happened next at the end of it, but alas, we have to wait for the final one.

Next episode is definitely the resolution, so I’m looking forward to that! I hope that Erin lives, though the preview shots are suggestive. We’ll have to see what happens, next time, on the next and final episode of Kemono no Souja Erin: Kemono no Souja — Beast Renditioner!

Episode 48: Dawn at Ryoza

 

Summary:

At Tahai Aze, Shunan and his men ready themselves for the morning. Shunan asks about his father, and one of his aides tells him he is resting in bed. Another man approaches and informs Shunan of a large carriage cloaked in darkness on the Queen’s side. Shunan’s other aide tells him there are rumors of a beast-lord that saved the Queen when she was assaulted by Touda on the river, adding the men are afraid that a similar miracle may come to pass. The other aide thinks this is ridiculous, for beast-lords and Touda have never befriended humans; he says that there will be nothing to protect them when the blue flag fails to raise, but Shunan says they will wait for her answer right now.

In the Queen’s tent, Seimiya and Damiya sit across from one another with masked men around them. She mutters how she must make her decision soon, and Nami expresses concern. Damiya is informed by one of his men that they failed to finish off Kiriku, though an injury has been inflicted. Damiya tells him there is no rush, for he will come to them; after all, it seems he has an attachment to Erin. Elsewhere, Kiriku stumbles around in the night blizzard.

In Lilan’s cage, Erin, Nukku, and Mokku stand around. They note Erin’s worrisome expression and wish they could do something. Just then, a noise originates from outside and they find Kiriku unconscious on the ground. In another area, Ial contemplates his plan of attack, noting how it’s too windy for a bow and arrow. He is interrupted by Kyle, who offers to lend assistance since the guard around the area is tight. Ial looks him over and remarks how it will be more of a hindrance since he is injured; Kyle points out injuries of his own. However, Ial says he will put an end to this himself with a smile, explaining his reasons for becoming a Sezan and saying they can’t allow a man who killed his own aunt to govern the country. In addition, he claims it is to honor Erin. Kyle deducts he isn’t going in there to die, and allows him to go forward without him, stating he has found a new light. Ial looks up, contemplating his words.

Back in Lilan’s cage, Kiriku awakens to Erin, who is bandaging his wounds. He asks why he is saving her when she knows who he really is. Erin says she can’t ignore the wounded, and he apologizes, handing her some candy. He tells her not to worry, for his wounds did not come from fighting Ial. She asks about his reasons for coming here and, at that moment, he sees Tahya in her, muttering her name. Lilan then growls and Erin, along with Nukku and Mokku, focus on events outside: a swarm of Touda led by Ngan move through the snowy lands. Shunan asks what he is doing here, since they are Touda he provided to protect the castle. Ngan claims he could not stand by during such a key moment. Shunan tells him this isn’t a war, and Ngan sarcastically replies, “Of course not.” He accuses him of treason in trying to subjugate the Queen with an army of Touda. Shunan denies this, but Ngan decides to keep watch. Their father interrupts them, stating he may observe how Shunan changes the world and accomplish something Yaman Hasal could not. Ngan replies how only the gods know fate, then walking off. Their father then stumbles, and Shunan rushes to his aid. He asks him to allow his old eyes to see the light of a new era, to which Shunan promises.

Back at Lilan’s cage, Erin looks out, knife in hand. Kiriku approaches her and asks whether she’s afraid. He notices the knife and says that she could try escaping, proposing leaving with him. Erin says she can’t, stating she doesn’t know what will happen, but wishes to continue with Lilan until things must end. Kiriku affirms that Lilan’s name means “light,” then wishing it will be that which washes over her. He then proceeds to make his exit, and Erin tells him to “live on.” This reminds him of his sister’s last words, and he tells her about Tahya. He thanks her and also hopes she will live on and find happiness, then leaving.

A gong in the distance sounds off, and Damiya and Seimiya watch a performance featuring men dressed as beast-lords and Touda. Meanwhile, Kiriku heads off into the hills and faces off against Ial. At the deciding strike, Ial finds that Kiriku is resolved to die by his own blade, and questions his motivation for being there. They are then approached by the masked men and face off against them. Kiriku manages to take out the men Ial is fighting against, and tells him to go to Erin’s side. As he is about to be overcome by the men he’s fighting, Ial comes to his aid. Kiriku asks why he didn’t leave, and Ial says he won’t abandon someone he can save. He tries to tie up his wound, but Kiriku tells him he can bandage it himself, handing him a mask enabling him to get close to Damiya. He tells him to also take care of Erin.

Back in the cage, Lilan is uneasy about the Touda, and Erin asks her to calm down, saying they are still far away; she then plays the harp to ease her worries. Meanwhile, the Queen and her escorts move forward while Ake Village, Tairan and Chok, Yuuyan, Ial’s friend, Owl and Eku, along with Esal and the others all wait anxiously for the new day. The snow soon stops, replaced by the ascending sun from the mountains. Kiriku looks up, seeing Erin soon substituted by his sister. He marvels at the light’s beauty, addressing Tahya and falling unconscious.

Seimiya cries at the sight of the sun, and Damiya says there is no need to cry no matter how many Touda there are. She says that isn’t the reason, instead stating that she never knew how vast and beautiful the world was. The legend of their kingdom is then narrated by her as both sides watch the day break. Back in Lilan’s cage, Erin informs her that the night is ending.

This was a frustrating episode for me. Frustrating in the sense that not too much happened, but great in that the emotion and buildup for the final episodes were there. They did a wonderful job with getting all the main characters’ perspectives on the upcoming events, and I agree that Seimiya reading the legend was a nice touch. Also awesome was seeing all of the characters again (even Tairan!), and how they were waiting for the results of this epic event. Was that pink-haired lady Yuuyan in one of the shots? If that was, then I’m surprised she already has a whole family. Characters in this anime pop out children like no tomorrow! I wouldn’t be surprised if Erin and Ial had triplets in a sequel (if they both survive and there was one).

I just wish the resolution would come sooner. There were times where I wanted to slap Seimiya to hurry up and do what she was planning to do and also whack Erin for taking out that knife again. The tag team fight was cool though, and I was worried Ial would have killed Kiriku.

I wonder how much time really has passed from Erin’s graduation until now? Despite just 4 months, Shunan looks a lot older than when we last saw him. Ngan’s appearance was sudden, and it’s apparent he has some gripes about what his brother is doing. I just wonder how that’ll factor in with only two episodes remaining. Even if they do fight, can’t Seimiya stop it since he’s supposed to genuinely care for her interests? Also, that definitely looks like Yuuyan from the screenshots, but she already has kids (standing, no less!)?

I’m glad they did a 360 on all the characters (even Tairan!). It makes the anticipation for the final two even greater. It would be awesome if we got to see Erin reunite with them all, but I doubt that will happen, unless episode 50 is dedicated to that (meaning 49 would show us the resolution to things). Again, I’m a little frustrated with the pacing of this episode. I think they could have moved things along faster while maintaining the buildup of emotion. My greatest hope is that we actually get to see a solid resolution by next episode and have episode 50 be a relaxed episode, but we’ll see.

Another disappointment (as mentioned in the quoted text above) is that Erin took out her knife again. Even after speaking with Ial and Seimiya, she still is thinking about that path. I thought she had dismissed it based on what she told Ial a couple episodes ago, but apparently not.

I also wonder if Kiriku has kicked the bucket? We probably won’t find out until the end. I found it funny that Erin told him to live on and he basically said the same thing back to her. It was also predictable she would react the way she did when he said it, but I guess some things are just that way. Lastly, why is Seimiya and the others with those masked men? Don’t they know that her grandmother’s assassins wore those masks? If not, then that’s pretty poor communication… It seems ridiculous that only the Sezans would know a major detail like that.

In any case, I’m really excited about the next episode. I hope Damiya gets what’s coming to him, and that Erin ends up with a happy resolution. Here’s to the hoping! Keep your eyes peeled for the next episode of Kemono no Souja Erin: “The Battle!”

Episode 47: Pure Night

 

Summary:

As Seimiya is looking out from the palace, Nami says she’ll return when preparations are ready for her cleansing. She contemplates silently over her conversation with Shunan, Damiya’s proposal, and other past events. She thinks how she is here because people wish for her to be Queen, and that she’s lived believing that as the correct path. At the Lazal Beast-lord care center, Erin rouses a slumbering Nukku and Mokku, who secretly let her and Lilan out.

Back at the palace, Damiya presents Seimiya with a pinwheel gift. She addresses him as “uncle,” and Damiya smiles and says it won’t be long before she stops calling him that (-_-;). Seimiya says he’s right, looking slightly depressed. Noticing her change, he opens another window, showing the lighted capital against the night sky. He claims any visible patch of land from here is hers to govern, and that she must not be fooled by anyone, for they were chosen by the gods. She asks him whether she’ll be able to be like the late Queen and Je, and Damiya says that the miracle at Tahai Aze will do just that. He further says the future of Ryoza lies within her, and that he will stand by her. As they embrace, Nami interrupts and informs her preparations are complete for the cleansing. Damiya tells her to go on, for once she is blessed by the gods, she need not be afraid of anything.

In a misty forest en route to Seimiya, Erin is confronted by Nason. He says he’s come to fetch her, as she must not use the Renditioner skills anymore, saying they can still stop this. Erin refuses. Nason says he doesn’t want to see her perish because of a horrible crime; furthermore, he tells her that he’s watched her every single day since Soyon died. Erin counters simply, “you were just watching?” She continues with how he and the Mist People use codes and the past as excuses to justify letting people die and allowing beasts to be tied down. She asks whether that is really the right thing to do, and makes an assertion of her own: humans should change, not beasts. Nason says that is difficult since humans are foolish creatures that repeat mistakes. However, Erin tells him that pessimistic attitude fueled the restriction of people using the word “crime.” She doesn’t want to restrict Lilan with codes designed by humans, even if it leads to her death. On that note, she flies off, leaving Nason to contemplate her words.

At the pool of cleansing, Nami leaves Seimiya to her own devices as she bathes partially clothed. She notices a flock of birds retreat from the forest, followed by the shadow of a beast-lord descending. Nami catches wind of something as she shuts the door, but figures it is nothing too important. Back at the pool, Seimiya is shocked to see a beast-lord and watches Erin descend from Lilan’s back. Seimiya asks who she is, and Erin apologizes for the intrusion, explaining how she wanted to speak to her without interruption. Seimiya quickly realizes she is Erin. She had thought of inviting her sooner, and would have done so if she had known. Erin reveals that Damiya told her she could do no such thing. Seimiya wonders why he would do that, and Erin believes it’s because he was afraid Erin would tell her of the late Queen’s final wishes.

Seimiya decides to listen. Erin then asks if she’s aware of the late Queen’s promise: that she did not have to protect her with Lilan. Seimiya says no and is shocked by this news, wondering why this is. Erin thinks it’s because she believed in the tale passed down by her mother’s tribe, and goes into detail of the past tragedy. Seimiya, similar to her grandmother, is shocked by this news. She counters with how “fanciful” the tale seems to be, and wonders if Erin really thinks she would believe it. Erin says she’s not in the position to be doing such things. Seimiya theorizes she could be working with Ial, betrayer of the Sezans, who in turn is working with Shunan so they may manipulate her to do the Grand Duke’s bidding. She also surmises that it was Ial who told Erin to visit her during the cleansing.

Erin shifts to another topic with a question regarding Lilan’s different appearance from other beast-lords. Seimiya makes note of this and agrees she is very beautiful. Erin tells her on how this came to pass, saying the Beast-Lord Imperatives prevent the others from being able to fly and bear children. Erin prompts her with another question: if this is really the case, then why did Je write the imperatives? She answers her own question: because she didn’t want the past tragedy to be repeated. Yet, using them as a symbol, citizens can be controlled by the belief of the will of a “god,” versus military power. Erin thinks Je wrote the imperatives to also keep beast-lords near her while making it impossible for them to be used as weapons: the benetrophic water inhibits them from going into heat and having children; the mute whistle creates an invisible emotional barrier between them and humans.

Seimiya asks how well Lilan and Erin have bonded, and she reveals that they understand each others’ wishes. However, she explains her severed fingers and says that it highlights a gap that cannot be filled: beast-lords are still beasts, and beast-lords still bear their fangs at Touda. Even so, she does not wish for beast-lords to be used as tools of war. It is not for the story she just told, her mother’s tribal code, nor for Ryoza, but rather she doesn’t like “seeing beasts confined in cages wrought by human codes.” This reminds Seimiya of her own situation: being protected since birth to become the Queen. She had never questioned her scenario. In Erin and Lilan, she sees a portrayal of freedom and Je. She surmises that her grandmother realized that she had been living inside a cage long ago. Seimiya thinks how people would continue to follow the imperatives had Erin not met Lilan, and figures it is the gods that intended it to happen, along with their meeting tonight. However, Erin disagrees, saying if it wasn’t for the individual who set up the late Queen’s assassination and acted as the Grand Duke, she would not be here. Seimiya asks what she means, and Erin reveals that Damiya threatened to kill Esal and the others if she did not obey.

Another wave of shock hits Seimiya, and Erin clarifies her statement: it is Damiya who led the fake Saigamul wearing masks, and ordered the poisoning of Ial as he caught onto the truth. Seimiya wonders why he would kill her grandmother, and Erin asks whether she would have allowed the two to marry if she were still alive. Seimiya wanders over to the pool and then notes how the late Queen was not fond of Damiya. Yet, she still is shaken by this truth, recalling recent events with him. After contemplating near the pond for a moment, Seimiya tells Erin she will stand beside her at Tahai Aze; however, she will just be one of many witnesses. She gives her this freedom, something that she herself does not have.

My Thoughts:

Happy new year! Nothing like another episode of Kemono no Souja Erin to start things off :).

Not much happened physically this episode, but there were gobs of information. In that sense, I loved it. Erin finally was able to tell Seimiya about everything. I’m glad she didn’t buy into the story right away, but instead had to have Erin rationalize things out to her. It is somewhat surprising that Seimiya bought into how Ial betrayed the Sezans, and I’m curious about what reasons Damiya told her about that and on why the original Sezans were dismissed. There were a few points where I chuckled (out of disgust / humor): when Damiya told Seimiya she wouldn’t be calling him uncle soon (yeah, more like an incestuous bastard), how Erin managed to sneak out with the giant Lilan, how she got off Lilan’s back (I don’t remember ever seeing that), and Nason’s confession to watching her every single day (looks like he needs a new hobby).

Erin played the lecturer this episode, talking to Nason and with the young Queen. I like how she brought up the incident between her and Lilan, though the two definitely are on good terms now since Lilan flew with her and is listening. One interesting point was when Seimiya mentioned how the late Queen wasn’t fond of Damiya; though there were hints at it from time to time, it’s never been as clearly stated before. I can buy into how he wanted her gone so he could nab Seimiya for himself. He’s a perverted dastard anyway. Seimiya accepted the fact that Damiya betrayed them almost too easily, though it’s possible she may have suspected something going on. Sometimes it takes another person to point it out and provide reasonable statements for one to seriously consider it (kind of like Kiriku). I also like how they portrayed Je with a beast-lord similarly to Soyon and the Kiba.

As for Nason, Erin sure told him! She should have gone a step further and explicitly said, “You could have saved Soyon with those skills!” I think he got the message, though… the implication was there.

Next episode looks to draw us closer to this series’ climax, if not the climax, as all the key players are gathered. I’m sure Seimiya will put a damper on Daimiya’s expectations somehow. Ngan is there, too, making me wonder if he’s going to fight against Shunan. Kiriku also makes an appearance, and it looks like he may want a rematch with Ial. With all the snow, I wonder if they’ll even be able to see Seimiya’s decision? Another odd thing is the masked men are surrounding Seimiya and others, making me wonder if they’ve been captured? It should be exciting, so be prepared for an eventful next episode on Kemono no Souja Erin, “Dawn at Ryoza!”

Oh yeah, I experimented with a higher quality video when taking screenshots this time (have an upgraded machine that can handle higher resolutions). I’m probably going to resize them to the usual since they’re a little big for the slideshow when going through them. For this posting, though, the screenshots are bigger than usual.

Episode 46: Their Bond

 

Summary:

Erin is playing the Bird of Dawn in the shed when Lilan and Eku start growling. Taking a look outside, she finds a bloodied Ial on the ground. She takes him inside and proceeds to stitch up his wounds. Initially, Lilan and Eku continue growling, but eventually calm down once the process is complete. Ial dreams of when he was younger and with his family. As Erin wipes the sweat from his forehead, Ial mutters, “I see,” and smiles, eyes still closed. He eventually recalls his father’s death and being recruited by Hagal, along with his brutal training and the Queen. He finally opens his eyes to find a slumbering Erin embracing his right hand. Tears stream down his cheeks as she wakes up and asks if he’s in pain; however, he turns away and tells her everything is okay. She asks him whether he wants water, but he tells her he’ll head out as soon as possible since he’s being pursued. When asked about what happened, he tells her about Damiya’s treachery. He also mentions Kiriku’s role in all of this. The news shocks Erin.

Ial prepares to leave, not wanting to involve Erin further. However, he stumbles and she grabs him in time. She asks that he let her take care of him since he came intending to rely on her. Eventually, Kiriku approaches the shed’s entrance and figures Ial would only come here. Inside, Erin asks whether he wants to lie down, but Ial says no, instead requesting she play the harp; he wants to hear her pure tune. Kiriku listens in and watches Ial fall asleep on Erin’s shoulder. He’s again reminded of his sister, and seeing the scene makes him drop his pursuit. As he walks away, Damiya and other masked men ride past. He apologizes for losing him. Damiya says he’s lost his faith in him and tells him to do whatever he wants. They follow the blood trail leading to Lazal. Back in the shed, Ial awakens to find Erin sleeping on his shoulder. Lilan and the others begin growling, which warns them of the approaching intruders. Erin checks things out outside and confirms this. Ial tries to leave but Erin stops him, asking whether he trusts her. Ial immediately nods.

Masked men pour into the shed, and one points out a bloodstain on the straw Ial had been resting on. Damiya enters and asks about Ial’s whereabouts. Erin has positioned herself in Lilan’s cage and is unresponsive, instead calming Owl. He asks what’s the point in hiding him. Owl sneers in response. Damiya concludes Erin must like him, and says if she wants to hide him, then that’s okay; they will soon find him anyway. He says that Ial is simply a shield that doesn’t understand the authority of the royal family. He says that she’s different, however, for she can control beast-lords and is smarter than anyone; hence, she should already know that she has no choice but to obey her destiny. The masked men conclude Ial is no longer here, and they leave. Morning draws closer.

Once they’ve gone, Erin thanks Lilan for her assistance and it’s revealed that Ial was hiding beneath her. Ial apologizes, and also thanks Lilan for saving him again. He thinks they must really trust Erin to allow him shelter like that. However, Erin thinks it’s because she’s not alert over him. She believes beast-lords can sense people’s emotions well. Ial brings up the Lazal demonstration, wondering if that’s why they didn’t obey Ouri’s tune. Erin attributes that to Ouri’s fear and how he also blew the whistle many times while raising them. She says that beast-lords will never open their hearts to those who have blown the mute whistle against them. Thus, this is why the beast-lords here will listen to her tune, not because she’s an Akun Me Chai.

Erin also says she wants to raise Lilan and the others as if they were in the wild; however, if that bond was to be used as a tool for war, she thought she’d just have to disappear. Yet, she now realizes that even if she dies people will continue to suffer, Touda will be raised as weapons, while beast-lords as symbols of power. Ial presumes it’s her dream to help prevent these things.

He says he was having a dream of his family, and talks about his past: the desire to be like his father, that he became a Sezan because his father died and had to support his family. Erin reminiscences that the sound he made with his harp was very warm– it made her feel like she was with her mother again. She thinks that if he’s being chased, then he must no longer be a Sezan, and can live out the rest of his life as he sees fit. However, Ial says he can’t live like that anymore, and explains the Sezan’s code: severing ties with family and not being able to have a wife, among other things. He reasons that he’s killed too many, and he does not wish to free himself of seeing the faces of people he’s killed. He thinks the Grand Duke’s soldiers must feel the same way.

Erin compares his situation to that of a Touda, one who is taken away from its mother and raised only to fight. However, she says he is not a Touda, and shouldn’t be used as a tool by other humans. Ial thinks she’s right, and Erin recalls the idea of the Grand Duke becoming King. She asks him if there’s any way to meet with Seimiya. Morning’s light begins to pour in as Ial thinks, and upon Lilan’s roar, followed by Owl, he realizes she may be able to do something. He asks if she’s willing, and Erin nods. He will continue fighting for the late Queen and the belief that there are still things he can trust in. Tears seep from Erin’s eyes, as his resolve confirms to her that he is indeed a kind person that thinks about family. She says the “mute whistle” that would tie him down is now gone, yet she wonders why he won’t grasp happiness with his own hands. Ial’s eyes well up, and he embraces Erin as tears roll down his cheeks. Owl looks curiously at the scene, while Lilan and Eku admire it with the sunlight comforting them.

My Thoughts:

This episode really hits a home run in the direction of Ial x Erin. I was skeptical of such a relationship, especially since Erin met Ial when she was several inches shorter. Since they’re about the same height now, it somewhat makes a romance between them less awkward, but I’m not completely on deck with it. It is possible he’s only about 4-5 years older than her, since Erin had a growth spurt from 10 to 14. I don’t think Ial ever had any romantic interest when Erin was only 10 (or I would hope), but I think she may have won him over through time. Then again, no other woman has really gotten close to Ial. To be fair, I’d say the two confide in the other pretty well. Both have lost loved ones, faced many adversaries in their lives, and also share similar ideals. They’re quite a good fit for one another, arguably preordained by character design and story.

It hadn’t even occurred to me when watching the episode the first time, but a user named noteDhero on the myanime list forums mentioned how the Erin and Ial scenario this episode is reminiscent of Soyon and Asson’s first meeting. From that perspective, it does foreshadow the two ending up together. One might feel sympathetic towards Tomura, but honestly he had plenty of chances to make a move (using lame pick-up lines, like ‘I’m a beast, tame me’).

We also learn the reasons why Erin was able to calm the beast-lord at Lazal: she was a new face, one who had no history of using the mute whistle on them, and she also suppressed her fear when facing it. According to her, beast-lords are good at sensing people’s emotions. I’m curious about whether her statement about beast-lords not befriending humans that have used the mute whistle on them is entirely true, since Lilan appears friendly towards her again. Theirs could be a special case since Erin has shown her a great amount of kindness and respect. Also, I’m surprised Lilan isn’t angry anymore; we haven’t seen their interaction since episode 43, and now that we revisit it here, things appear patched up. In that sense, I wish they had touched on it a bit more, but I guess since we’re reaching the end, they couldn’t hit on it. We’re just now left with the assumption Lilan simply forgives Erin, and perhaps understands she is in an unfavorable situation and didn’t blow it maliciously.

I’m curious whether the poison in Ial just ran its course. That’s the most likely explanation; either that or Erin managed to deal with it.

One other point is that Kiriku has been dismissed by Damiya. Will he simply vanish now or give a lending hand towards redemption? He has to do something fast with the remaining episodes left if he wants to. Next episode, it looks like Erin finally gets to meet Seimiya. Nason also makes an appearance, along with Nukku and Mokku (I wondered what had happened to them). I’m curious to see how Erin will sneak out with Lilan; also, what role will Ial now play? Is Nason going to try assassinating Erin now, after all this time? I don’t see why, since she’s working towards fixing things. Oh yeah, one last thing: I’m glad Erin finally dropped her plan of dying! This, along with what’s been set up this episode, makes me hopeful for a good end. Time to teach that Damiya and his fellow jerky friends a lesson. Maybe Lilan will end up breathing fire (new ability learned) and roast ‘em. As of this posting, I’m proud to say I’ve finally caught up on the subs I follow. The next posting will come when the next subs are released. It’s been an interesting couple of months, as I started watching around the middle of October and wrote the first episode post at the end of the month. My goal was to catch up to the subs before the raw episodes ended, and it’s been done (woo hoo). It may not have made sense, but I wanted to start from the beginning because it is the first anime I’ve written about and I respect it. Also, I personally had wanted a blog to follow when I was going through the series, but couldn’t find one that had all the episodes. Hopefully, this will be useful to someone like me who started the series late.

Episode 45: Bird in a Cage

 

Summary:

Kiriku recalls his first meeting with Damiya. He explained how his adoptive parents used him and Tahya as a means of citizenship in the Queen’s quarter. He cursed them for murdering his sister, who lived so purely; furthermore, he vowed to exterminate all Wajyaku. Kiriku asked Damiya whether the world belongs to those who live purely. Damiya said it does, and offered him a role in his cause. He also thinks back to when he received the poison from him. In thinking through all of this, he has been watching Erin down below, and it’s apparent she still stirs the doubt within him.

A silent scene between Damiya and Seimiya is then shown, where he apparently proposes to her. Back in the shed, Erin thinks back to Damiya’s words about the Grand Duke becoming King. At the palace, Kyle informs Ial of Damiya’s proposal and how Seimiya accepted. Ial is surprised by the news, and even more when Kyle informs him that they, the Sezans, have been replaced by a new team. Ial asks him about the investigation, and Kyle details his findings: he verifies Erin’s claim of a Touda’s crest, and that an army of Touda had been created in secret. The evidence all leads to one person. Though he does not directly say it, Damiya is allegedly the culprit.

In Seimiya’s room, her attendants woo over her dress and are excited to see her in it. Nami looks over and notices Seimiya’s silence, prompting her to ask whether she’s feeling well. Seimiya tells her she’s fine, and says how she must go to the Forest of Cleansing in two days and remain focused to avoid the gods’ punishment. Nami reassures her that the gods will protect her, and Seimiya agrees.

In Damiya’s room, Kiriku inquires about Erin’s decision to his order, and is updated on how one beast-lord will fly to demonstrate their power. He wonders if this is enough, and Damiya says that the Grand Duke’s men are not used to seeing a beast-lord with a human on its back; plus, they will see their Touda die by Lilan’s fangs. Doubt will fill the Grand Duke’s ranks, and he will learn first-hand that they have power equivalent to that of a god. Kiriku closes his eyes in contemplation, and Damiya goes on to say how he’ll wed Seimiya once Shunan returns to his quarter in defeat. He will then forge a beast-lord army in secret. Kiriku doesn’t think Erin will agree to it, but Damiya reassures him, stating that Erin is a wise and kind girl. He mentions how there is one more person in the way, and that all threats should be eliminated.

Kiriku thinks back to when he and Tahya first met their foster parents and received a bird in a cage. Things quickly changed for the worst, though, and the scene shifts to Tahya’s abuse and death. After poisoning them in retaliation, Kiriku encourages the dying bird to fly for Tahya’s sake, but is unsuccessful. Back in the present, as he prepares to carry out Damiya’s order, Kiriku continues to think about Erin. Yet, he puts on the familiar mask and tells himself that he will become the poison to eliminate all impurities.

Ial is summoned to Damiya’s room, where he is treated to some wine. Damiya informs Ial of his proposal and how Seimiya accepted. The wedding will be held after the mourning period is over. Ial congratulates him, and Damiya gives thanks. The two then toast to the future of their kingdom. Damiya claims he didn’t propose for his own needs, but rather it was to strengthen their bloodline for Ryoza. He says that the Queen should rule in her pure state while the Grand Duke’s soldiers dirty their hands, per their destiny. He claims that to protect these ideals, the current “impurities” must be corrected. Ial asks if that’s why he’s using Erin, and Damiya dodges the question. He instead calls her a strange girl, having a unique ability yet refusing to show it off. When inquired about what Erin told the late Queen, Ial says he has nothing to share; he says that if he’s interested, then he should ask Erin. Annoyed, Damiya says he’s asking him, but Ial poses an interesting question: if he spoke, would he reconsider building a beast-lord army? Damiya says no, and hence Ial doesn’t see what difference his words would make. A disappointed Damiya thinks he’s correct, but says Ial is nothing more than a layer of shielding. He claims that only people like himself can influence a country, and those with true power never step outside.

Ial suddenly realizes the wine was poisoned. Damiya says that though no one notices, everything moves by his command. Seimiya, Shunan, and even the late Queen are tools to him. Ial realizes he was indeed the perpetrator of the Touda attack. Damiya says that a new era will soon begin, and that old tools should be rid of, which includes the talking shields. Ial immediately knows that the Sezans are in danger. Elsewhere, Kyle fights against a group of masked men. Ial rushes out of the room, and Damiya receives the antidote from a hidden Kiriku. Damiya was worried that the poison wasn’t affecting Ial, but reasons that it’s because he’s a Sezan. He tells Kiriku to finish the job.

The scene shifts to a weakened Ial rushing to Kyle’s aid. As he’s about to be overtaken, Ial saves him and says he’ll attract the pursuers, allowing him to escape. He is faced against two adversaries, and manages to take one of down. The other survivor is Kiriku, and Ial realizes he is a teacher from Kazalm. He brings up Erin and his betrayal, and wonders if he dragged her into this. Ial argues that she was only living purely and to the best of her ability with the beast-lords. Kiriku thinks again to his sister in comparison to Erin, and states he only wanted to see how far she could go. Ial says he’s the one that prevented her from continuing up, trapping her in a cage that Damiya prepared. His words shatter Kiriku’s motivation, and he mutters his sister’s name. Ial realizes he, too, must be Damiya’s tool. Thinking back to what he’s done and experienced, Kiriku is unable to hold his tears and kneels to the ground. Ial watches him silently and walks away. The shattered mask lies nearby, while its owner continues to weep regretfully.

My Thoughts:

Damiya proposing to Seimiya? That’s ridiculous. I’m surprised her attendants were looking forward to it, considering he is her uncle. I guess it’s alright since he’s a descendant of a god -_-;. Seimiya should be more worried about being “defiled” with Damiya than with Shunan. The story would really end tragically if Erin and all the good guys died, and Shunan was forced to witness Seimiya and Damiya’s wedding. That probably won’t happen though.

Ial and Kyle finally figured out the mastermind of things, which turned out to be Damiya. Unfortunately, Ial fell for his trap while Kyle almost died. I had thought Ial faked drinking the wine since it felt obvious that it was poisoned, but I overestimated him. I was worried he was going to drop dead once the background changed to a weird color, but fortunately he’s still alive at the end of the episode. It’s impressive (and somewhat coincidental) that Ial managed to hit on all the points and words to mentally take down Kiriku.

Speaking of Kiriku, with all his doubts leading up to that point, I’m surprised he acted so… surprised. I think it was more of him hearing what he thought said by someone else that broke him. When a person doubts himself, sometimes he keeps on trucking just because he thinks he’s overanalyzing something; but when he hears those same arguments by someone else, then that defense is broken and he can become easily demotivated. Seeing him kneel and shed tears like that just supports the idea that he’s been forcing himself to justify his actions. I wonder what he’ll do now.

Fortunately, it looks like Kyle may have successfully escaped to get help. Next episode, it appears Ial and Erin get some more development together, though Damiya could spoil the mood. I’m hoping he’s able to tell her what’s going on before he dies, if that should happen. Look forward to Erin x Ial, next time, on Kemono no Souja Erin: “Their Bond!”

Episode 44: Akun Me Chai

 

Summary:

As Erin and the others travel to Lazal, Kiriku recalls their conversation from the night before. He told her she’d have some degree of freedom if she followed Damiya’s orders. Erin responded with how she had hoped to raise Lilan and the others as if they were in the wild; however, now she can’t do anything for them and is taking away their freedom. Kiriku stated people are powerless, and that it’s not sinful to abide by one’s fate. Erin asked him whether the things she did with Lilan were wrong, and, at the same time, accidentally dropped a knife. He asked her about it, but she had said that if things came down to it, she would take responsibility to prevent another disaster from happening.

The scene shifts to Ake, down in the Touda grotto. Wadan is hurrying everyone to make sure things are ready for the Grand Duke, and an older Chok makes a sly comment about him acting like Chief since Hasson is bedridden. Near Soyon’s execution site, Saju and her daughter pay their respects to the presumed deceased Erin and her mother. She’s asked why there’s a grave here when a proper cemetery is at the village; her daughter also wonders if it’s because they’re “Akun Me Chai,” a term she learned from Wadan. Saju tells her not to call Erin that, saying she was her childhood friend. Chok then arrives and pays his respects along with them.

Rain falls overhead as Erin reaches the palace. She is left alone with Damiya. He asks about her injury, and Erin tells him it no longer hurts as he locks the door. Damiya marvels at her courage to not use the mute whistle despite the event; however, Erin states that her and Lilan’s friendship no longer exists. Damiya says the most important thing is that they obey her words, something he is envious of. They have a seat, and he updates her on the situation regarding Shunan and the Queen. He claims that Shunan will have the Queen devoured if the miracle doesn’t happen and she doesn’t marry him. Erin tells him to get to the point, and he orders her to make an army of beast-lords. He thinks it would be an amazing balance of having the beast-lords against the Grand Duke’s Touda.

Back with Saju, her daughter asks her about Erin, and she tells her how she was kind and smart, still in disbelief over her “death.” Things shift back to the palace, where Damiya explains how the country’s distortion began because the sides were not balanced; thus, one side will be crushed and soon fall apart. However, with an army of beast-lords, they can restore that balance. He claims this is his only desire, and that once this is done, a civil war isn’t necessary. His words remind her of King Ophalon, who contributed to the tragedy. Erin is fully aware she’s being taken advantage of. Damiya mentions her origin, which gets her thinking. She tells him it’s impossible to form a beast-lord army, for she is the only one who can control them. Erin brings up the phrase, “Akun Me Chai,” which stands for a child born from an untraditional union. She explains her parents’ backgrounds, and contributes her “powers” to control beast-lords from her mother’s origin. Damiya doesn’t believe her, but Erin confidently says she can prove it, which injures his skepticism.

Erin stays the rainy night in the shed, with Lilan’s family. In the morning, she approaches Damiya, Ouri, and others, harp in hand. Ouri mentions her peculiarity for staying with the beast-lords all night. Erin prepares to demonstrate her “power,” noting that if anyone could do it, then all it would take is to repeat the same tune. She offers Ouri the chance to disprove her theory, and he reluctantly accepts.

Erin then approaches the largest beast-lord. It becomes hostile when she enters its sensitive area: its shadow. Gazing directly into its eyes, she plays her harp, discarding the same fear of when she was attacked by Lilan. To everyone’s surprise, it eventually stops growling and lowers itself to the ground in front of her. Ouri is then taught how to play the same tune. She tells him to immediately retreat if he senses danger, and that she’ll back him up with the mute whistle. Despite his melody, the beast-lord remains hostile, and lashes out when a frustrated Ouri steps forward. Erin fortunately blows the mute whistle in time. Hence, Damiya’s skepticism is fully broken.

Back in his room, Damiya tells Erin he won’t give up on his dream. He thinks there may be other ways, but realizes it would take too long. For now, he believes having her ride alone on Lilan to depict a miracle at Tahai Aze would suffice. She questions whether the Grand Duke would be foolish enough to believe it, and asserts that the country’s plague won’t go away with a single miracle. Damiya argues otherwise, for Shunan has promised a pledge of eternal loyalty on a single miracle. Because of his earnest personality, Shunan will definitely honor his word.

Erin still plans to refuse, but Damiya reveals his ace: the taking of Kazalm. She asks him what he plans to do, and he tells her it depends on her answer. Damiya threatens to go after Yuuyan, and wonders how she’ll feel seeing their execution. Should Erin agree to his proposal, she would save both herself and her friends. Also, he will not permit her an audience with the Queen this time. With these cards on the table, he asks her to think carefully. Damiya goes on to say that if the Grand Duke became the country’s King, then the skills to control beast-lords would be sealed away. Unbeknownst to Damiya, these words actually provide Erin with a hopeful possibility to save Lilan and her family.

My Thoughts:

I wonder how Erin managed to calm a beast-lord she had just met? My only theory is that having her eyes fixated on it while carefully managing its personal space were factors. It looked like Ouri got ahead of himself and rushed in, hence causing the immediate backlash. One thing to note is that Erin didn’t hesitate to the blow the mute whistle. I’m curious to see how she and Lilan will get along at Lazal, but unfortunately Lilan did a lot of sleeping this episode. I’m surprised Eku didn’t start pounding the cage since they were in a different place, but I guess he’s okay as long as his family is with him.

I thought (or was hoping) Erin was going to use the knife on Damiya at some point. I want her to drop those suicidal thoughts. She needs to find another way other than death. Although, I guess in this type of situation one has to be prepared for the worst. Maybe Kiriku will finally step in and lend a hand; he’s thinking about her a lot nowadays.

Erin’s play on her origin was clever. Way to take advantage of everyone’s ignorance! That’s what they get for making assumptions. It also looks like Erin is straying close to Shunan’s goal, but for different reasons. If the Grand Duke becomes King, then beast-lords won’t have to be used for war, thus preventing the tragedy. I’m not sure how she’ll contribute to that happening, though. Maybe she’ll fly over all the Touda and have a talk with Shunan? Also, wouldn’t he get suspicious if he saw someone other than the Queen riding on a beast-lord? Maybe the idea is to have Erin fly high enough to be obfuscated, but characters in this series have good sight (e.g. soldiers spotted King Ophalon on a beast-lord).

I still don’t get what Damiya is trying to do. He claims he’s trying to restore the balance of their country (obviously he could be lying since he’s telling Erin), but simply raising Touda to counter-balance the Grand Duke’s healthy supply is silly. Also, why would he need to assassinate the Queen? I’m sure he just wants to be in control.

Uh oh! Kazalm is in the hands of the enemy. I wondered if those guards were Sezan, but based on the preview, I assume they’re not. The new guards are probably the masked guys.

Lastly, and probably the person I was looking forward to most this episode: Saju! We got to see Wadan, too, who looks about the same with a similar personality. Chok looks like an average joe. Most surprising was seeing Saju already have a walking and talking kid with Chok. That’s pretty quick! Sounds like Hasson, the Chief, is still around, too. One thing to note is that everyone thinks Erin is dead. I hope she and Saju reunite by the end. It would be a nice touch.

This episode’s title, “Akun Me Chai,” had me scratching my head until I saw the episode. They certainly have some interesting names for things. In any case, it looks like next episode’s focus is more Ial-related, where things are heating up internally at the palace. Damiya assigning new guards should raise red flags for all, so hopefully Ial and his buddies will do something. I’m curious if Seimiya knows about the personnel change? We’ll have to see it, next time, on Kemono no Souja Erin: “Bird in a Cage!”

Episode 43: Beastinarian

 

Summary:

Lilan and her family rest during a stormy day. In his room, Kiriku looks out and recalls Damiya’s words: the Queen’s influence has steadily been decreasing, contributed by the Grand Duke’s military power and Wajyaku merchants; he believes that only those living under her have a place in their country. Thus, to correct this distortion, poison is sometimes necessary. Kiriku wonders if that logic is truly right.

On the storm’s clearing, Erin lets Lilan’s family out. She somberly thinks of what may happen now since the Queen’s dead. This bothers her throughout the day, highlighted in class when Shiron tries speaking with her. Tomura suddenly rushes over and tells Erin messengers have arrived from the palace to take Lilan’s family away. In response, Erin hurries towards the fields to stop them as dark clouds roll in. Esal-sensei is ordered to take the messengers to Lilan. When they get there, Lilan becomes hostile and Esal-sensei asks them to step back. However, Ouri asserts they can restrain her with the mute whistle if necessary.

One man prepares to blow it when Lilan takes a step forward, but Erin gets in between them. Ouri tells her they are here by Queen Seimiya’s orders, requesting she accept the decree to transfer to Lazal with Lilan’s family to protect the Queen. Erin’s rejection is joined by thunder. A shocked Ouri states only death waits on this chosen path, yet Erin refuses to change her mind. Lilan suddenly attacks one of the men, stunning everyone. She quickly tosses his battered body aside and tries to go after another. Erin reacts in time but is injured by the assault. Seeing Lilan’s refusal to back down, Erin is forced to tearfully blow her mute whistle. A bloodied Lilan then lies immobilized, and Erin soon passes out.

The scene forwards to the aftermath: Erin lies unconscious in bed while Kiriku gazes down at her. He again wonders if his cause is just, reasoning that Erin seems like the most pure-hearted one. Yet, through his actions, he is trapping her in a cage. Erin dreams of her mother, who asks what’s the matter. She runs up to her and cries, saying how she restrained Lilan with the whistle. Erin asks whether Soyon wanted to raise Touda as if they were in the wild, like she attempted with Lilan. However, a pained Soyon does not respond. Erin awakens to Esal-sensei, who says she was calling out to her mother; she says it is a blessing that no one died, but Erin looks over and is hit with a harsh reality: three of her left hand’s fingers are gone.

Esal-sensei explains that those men were the ones who had taken Lilan from her nest, which explains her aggression. Erin asks about her whereabouts, and Esal-sensei says they’ve chained her down due to her aggravation. Erin somberly recalls how a beast-lord will never befriend a human who uses the mute whistle on it. She wonders whether she’ll be able to calm Lilan without one now. Regardless, Erin wants to continue taking care of her. Esal-sensei states she’s taking a hard path, one where she’ll have to do what she hates most to Lilan, but Erin is resolved. Esal-sensei says others will question her decision, but it’s because she lives so honestly and true to her heart that she respects her. Teary-eyed, she hands Erin a glove for her hand, then providing comfort.

Erin eventually apologizes to the messengers, offering all the financial incentives from the late Queen; however, their eyes only return hatred. Back in Lilan’s shed, Erin is shunned when she tries to get her to go outside. However, she threatens to use the whistle, and a spiteful Lilan walks outside. Erin holds back tears while watching Lilan exit, placing her mother’s bracelet on her gloved hand. As a beastinarian, she is resolved to live with Lilan’s family through all hardships, like her mom did with Touda.

A few days later, a carriage arrives from the capital to take Lilan and her family away. They place sleeping pills in the food to immobilize them. Erin heads out on a wagon with Kiriku, Nukku, Mokku, and Ouri towards Lazal. Tomura wonders why Kiriku left too, but Esal-sensei has no answer but that it was an order from the palace. He wonders what will happen to Erin, and she claims there is nothing they can do now. Instead, they should watch her future from here; after all, it’s all they can do. Her eyes swell with tears. Erin decides to face the seemingly insurmountable force head-on, living strongly until the end– just like Soyon.

My Thoughts:

Damn. What a rough episode. Based on the preview, I knew something big was going to happen, but I didn’t think Erin would lose her fingers. Both her and Lilan lost something: for Lilan, trust; for Erin, something physical but also the betrayal of her ideals. I don’t blame her. We’ve seen it consistently. Erin is not the type to stand by and watch someone die (well, except maybe Damiya…). I doubt she will use the whistle again unless it’s absolutely necessary. It’s clear that Lilan doesn’t hate Erin that much; otherwise, she probably would have tried taking a bite out of her while walking outside. It’ll still take some time to repair their bond, though.

Some may call Erin a pushover for choosing the path she did, but I think she made a reasonable choice. If she ultimately didn’t accept (like it was leading to before Lilan attacked), Damiya would have threatened Kazalm, so she would end up agreeing anyway.

Things look set for a tragic ending, but I don’t buy it. With 7 episodes left, there’s plenty of time to turn things around. Erin may seem like she’s walking her mother’s path, but one thing to consider is how she has influential friends. Ial, in particular, is in a position that can play a critical factor. Plus, the story’s flow doesn’t feel right to end tragically. In the beginning, we were shown Soyon’s path, which resulted in her death; now, we have Erin, who may be strutting near her mother’s path, but having her end up in the same spot is a waste. Any good story would show how she deviates from past tragedy. Yes, Erin has definitely established her own identity by going against the code and working with beast-lords. Now faced with apparent death and hopelessness, she will again rise to the occasion and find a solution (versus being executed like Soyon). It wouldn’t make sense for a story woven together so nicely to suddenly spill out and have the main character killed off like her mother in the beginning (Erin being eaten by beast-lords? BS). Sometimes, one has to walk the same path as her ancestors to fully assess a situation and ultimately find a new path. In this situation, I think it’s the same for Erin.

Also, I wanted to beat up those messengers when they looked at the apologetic Erin with “hatred.” Either of those two punks could have blown the whistle after their friend was attacked. Instead, they stood frightened like the cowards they are and had Erin do the dirty work. I wonder what story Damiya told Seimiya (if any) about Erin? Is she completely oblivious to what’s happening? Wouldn’t be surprised.

The shots they showed of a younger Lilan and Erin, when she blew the mute whistle, were heart-breaking. This show is good at evoking the right emotions at key moments. I wasn’t too keen of the flashbacks at the beginning with the Queen, though.

Next episode, it looks like we get to see how the people at Ake are doing! Yay, Saju! Finally. I wonder if she and Erin will see each other by the show’s end? I hope so. It’d be cruel to tease us with next episode but not ever have them reunite. On another note, Erin arrives at the infamous Lazal and has a talk with Damiya. I hope she slaps him if he tries anything. Episode 42: Seimiya’s Tears

 

Summary:

Seimiya grieves over the loss of her grandmother, the Queen. Erin meanwhile visits Lilan and informs her of the news. Back at the palace, Nami bows to Seimiya, addressing her as the “Queen,” but she tells her “Seimiya” is fine when they’re alone– just as before. The Grand Duke stresses over the news, and Shunan informs him that others are trying to frame them for killing the Queen. Shunan advises they calmly think about the country’s future: for years they have protected the Queen’s quarter but are scrutinized by its members. In addition, those who have fought in the fearsome war can no longer look up to or hear her voice. As such, if they were accused of murdering the Queen, there would be no place for them to go. The Grand Duke starts to conclude something, but it’s not revealed what exactly. Shunan says it’s easy for them to crush the Queen’s quarter, but it will not bring them trust. He proposes an alternative that does not involve killing the Queen, and asks his father to leave it to him.

Seimiya looks up at an alter commemorating her grandmother, and tearfully reflects. Damiya enters and comforts her. He sheds tears of his own, and Seimiya realizes his pain, too; however, he says it hurts him more to see her crying. Seimiya is anxious to give birth to the next Queen, but Damiya tells her not to rush, for she isn’t a mere tool for that purpose. He claims she’s the only one that can choose any man to marry, and asks who is it she loves. Seimiya hesitates, stating there is no one. He then asks who loves her the most, implying himself. Outside, Ial again reflects on Hagal’s words. Kyle arrives and says it’s the end of the country should the Grand Duke march in with his army; regardless, they still have to live as shields. Ial agrees with him, but Kyle questions this, wondering if it was part of their duty to worry about the country’s future.

Shunan and others arrive, requesting an unscheduled audience with the Queen. As they wait in the throne room, Damiya tells Seimiya to talk to him in a dignified manner, reminding her who was responsible for the Queen’s death. When he enters, Shunan bows and offers his condolences. Both scorn him, a majority dealt by Damiya. Shunan asserts whether Seimiya really knows who was behind the attack, and she quickly accuses his quarter. However, he says that the need for Touda has risen ever since the war against Larza began, and that there are those who handle Touda in the Queen’s quarter. Seimiya is skeptical, but Shunan reasons there is no merit in killing the Queen through such an underhanded method. If they wanted to overtake the country, they would instead directly attack with their forces and claim the throne gloriously. Seimiya hesitates, but Damiya mocks his thought process: what Shunan said would be true, but the Queen is a god; killing such a divine being would result in the country’s immediate death. Shunan denounces her “divine” status because of her inability to bring peace to their country. Seimiya questions his statement, and he poses a simple question: how will she cure the plague killing their country? She tells him his greed is the disease, and that she will govern the country with a pure heart.

Shunan aggressively reminds her of their country’s protectors. He asks if she has the courage to see some of these men. She confidently says she will not be fearful, and Shunan has his companions come in: they are injured men from the war, covered in bloodied bandages. Seimiya immediately cowers in fear, and scenes are shown depicting the grim cost of war. An infuriated Damiya tells them to get out, saying it’s natural for soldiers like them to fight.

Later, Seimiya reflects on Shunan’s words and their relatively happy past. She cries near the floor, unsure of what to do. Ial offers Shunan and his horse lodging. He instead decides to visit the courtyard. In her room, Seimiya looks out the window and sees Shunan gazing up against the rain. She meets with him outside, asking what he wants. He wanted to talk where her favorite flower, the salo, blooms. Seimiya says she also has words to share: she may not know the realities of the world, but wants to govern like her grandmother did, so that the country will remain as beautiful. He understands, but explains at this rate the country will perish. He grabs her hand and states they must unite for the sake of Ryoza.

She asks what he means and he states it simply: he is proposing to her. Seimiya draws her hand away, though Shunan argues this is the only way to save their country. Seeing her worried face, he figures she feels it unjust to marry him, believing herself to be a god. Seimiya confirms this by nodding. He then makes a different proposal: in four months, he will be waiting at Tahai Aze, the origin of their country. There will be an army of Touda representing their quarter. If she can reenact the legend’s miracle of a beast-lord descending to save her, proving her divinity, then they will retreat and pledge eternal loyalty to her and the people. However, if this does not happen, then she must admit her mortality and marry him. Seimiya summarizes his words: she must choose either a path of war against or marriage to him. Shunan nods, saying if she decides on marriage, to raise a blue flag; only by that signal would he stop the Touda from marching. Seimiya tearfully concludes he only wants to marry her for the sake of Ryoza, and not because of love.

Shunan tries to correct this but Seimiya dismisses him. He grabs her and tries to lay a kiss, but Seimiya pushes him away, worried that she’ll be defiled if they become one. Damiya interrupts and leads her away. She takes one last look over at a drenched Shunan, who reflects on the past and watches the salos carry the rain like tears.

My Thoughts:

Things could have easily been patched up if Shunan just shouted, “I love you! I really love you!” at the end. Alas, we need more drama to feed the masses :). His proposal of having a beast-lord descend to her to save their kingdom immediately points the responsibility at Erin. It’s pretty coincidental and somewhat unrealistic on the point of what difference it would make to give Seimiya four months. If she were really a god, then she should already have the ability to do it. Then again, Shunan could be using the time frame to muster their forces. It probably wouldn’t be a large mass, since most of them are facing off against Larza. I also wonder if Ngan’s going to play a factor, since it’s obvious he holds the same belief as Damiya: the soldiers are meant to serve the Queen no matter the cost.

Damiya is confident because he knows about Erin, but I wonder what type of plan he would have without her? Sure, he probably has a good-sized Touda army, but I doubt anything close to the Grand Duke’s forces. Also, it’s creepy that I’m getting romantic vibes from him to Seimiya, since he is her uncle. I thought it was possible because of his side talk about Shunan’s flowers, but I didn’t think it would actually manifest. I don’t want to see any Damiya x Seimiya babies! Since the Queen was her grandmother, I wonder who Seimiya’s mom is?

At times I want to slap some sense into Seimiya, but I sympathize with her. Like I said awhile back, she was raised in a way dictated by others, and consequently doesn’t have a realistic grasp of the world. All that talk of governing with a “pure heart” and thoughts of being “divine” and “tainted” by Shunan makes me shake my head. She’d be even more “defiled” if she formed a “union” with her uncle. I hope things end well for her and Shunan. It’s possible Ngan may step in and assassinate Shunan, ruining the plan. Just a random thought.

One interesting thing is Seimiya did not hesitate to visit Shunan alone in the courtyard. This at least indicates she knows he’s not the one responsible, and harbors some feelings despite what she told Damiya.

The focus shifts back to Erin and Lilan next week. It looks like Damiya is carrying out his plan to use and abuse her. Stuff gets messy, though. Check it out next time, on Kemono no Souja Erin: “Beastinarian!”

Episode 41: The Truth About the Queen

 

Summary:

Six days after the Touda raid, the Queen is awake and on the road to recovery. Erin watches Lilan and her family enjoy a meal at Kazalm. She feels like what happened was a dream, but is reminded of the horrible event when Lilan bites a piece of meat. Esal-sensei arrives and hands her an invitation from the Queen: she requests her presence at a banquet before leaving. Esal-sensei tells Erin that they have no other choice than to see what she has to say.

Outside Sir Kazalm’s estate, Nukku and Mokku talk about the grandness of the dinner Erin is attending while waiting for her return. Inside, she is guided to the banquet and passes by Ial and asks how his injury is. He instead tells her that the Queen is inside, but he gives thanks for her concern before she heads in; Kyle thinks their behavior is cute. In the dining hall, Erin is welcomed by the Queen and Damiya. The Queen says she heard the story from Damiya and thanks her for the assistance, and is willing to grant her a request. Erin starts to talk, but Damiya remarks how she doesn’t have to hesitate in saying what she would like, for her accomplishment was quite impressive. He calls it a re-enactment of the gods, but Erin knows the true tragedy of the past. As she thinks, Damiya makes a request of his own: escorting them back to the capital as a bodyguard. Erin realizes where this is going.

She gracefully declines the offer, which angers Damiya, who claims her words could be taken as a refusal to protect the Queen. Erin acknowledges this, and he again orders her to protect the Queen on their way back; yet, she still refuses. Damiya threatens her with treason and death, further stating that the teachers at Kazalm would also be punished for allowing a person who refused to protect the Queen responsibility over a beast-lord. Erin says it would hurt more than death to see them suffer; however, no matter what they say, she will not budge. The Queen asks why she so strongly refuses to protect her, and Erin wishes to speak with her in private. An offended Damiya asks why he’s not invited, but Erin explains this is her request. The Queen questions her trust because of the refusal, but Erin invites Ial’s presence. Damiya wonders why she would trust Ial but not him. Yet, the Queen asks him to take everyone and step outside.

Meanwhile, Shunan discovers that their get-well gifts for the Queen have been rejected. Seimiya stated that they could not accept something from hands covered in blood. He wonders if Seimiya really thinks they were behind the attack.

Back at Sir Kazalm’s estate, Erin, Ial, and the Queen talk amongst themselves. Erin confirms that the Queen is ignorant of the Beast-Lord Imperatives’ true purpose. She reveals this to her, and goes into detail of their true history. An enlightened Queen trembles from her past ignorance. She explains that she never learned this because her mother and grandmother died in the fire set by the Saigamul. It hurts the Queen to realize her ancestor was merely a criminal, not a god. Erin says she does not want to keep Lilan in a small cage out of paranoia, but that if they become a cause of disaster, she will gladly die. Her resolve surprises both of them. Erin states that if her death can prevent a tragedy, then she will follow her beliefs to the end. She also explains her background and parents, including her mother’s execution: Soyon had died to abide by the code, but disobeyed it to save her life. Because of this and for Lilan’s sake, Erin doesn’t want to die bound by codes either.

The Queen compliments Erin’s strength, and thanks her for sharing her secrets. She says she’ll cancel her previous request, and Erin thanks her. However, she does wish to return to Kazalm to see her and the beast-lords again. Erin rides back happily with Nukku and Mokku. Ial and Queen talk over what they’ve learned. She’s visibly distressed from the information, but Ial reminds her that she is the shield of Ryoza; if she does not remain strong, then the country will crumble. Ial also informs her that he believes the assault was by a third party, pointing to the corruption in their country. The Queen tells him not to worry, for she will correct all the wrongdoings on her return to the capital.

Days later at Kazalm, Erin informs Lilan that they may be the talk of the town for awhile, but things should die down eventually. Esal-sensei interrupts and informs her of grave news: the Queen has passed away. She had collapsed right before entering the capital; apparently, there was bleeding in her head undetected by doctors, and it had spread slowly. Erin stands in shock, realizing that her hopes have died as well.

My Thoughts:

Lots of flashbacks this episode. Erin finally got to have a heart-to-heart talk with the Queen and things looked set for a happy ending… until the end. I wonder if the Queen really had bleeding in her head versus being poisoned by Damiya. The timing of when she collapsed (right before the capital? Come on.) was too coincidental. It’s a shame they didn’t have phones back then; otherwise, she could have at least updated Seimiya on the situation. We’re now left with a young and inexperienced Queen likely to be manipulated by Damiya. Speaking of him, I enjoyed it when he was given the cold shoulder, though that ultimately could have frustrated him enough to retaliate by assassinating the Queen. Her death felt likely after Erin told her everything; it would not have been as obvious if this was episode 50, but with 9 episodes remaining they needed some spice to finish things off. Plus, Erin wouldn’t be involved in the country’s troubles anymore if the Queen had done the problem solving back at the capital. At least Ial knows the truth behind their kingdom, too.

One other thing to touch on is Erin’s resolve to die if necessary. It’s interesting in the sense that it’s similar to Soyon’s line of thought: dying to prevent other tragedy. Though I admire her resolve, I think it’s a horrible thing to lay down, especially when she’s only 18. She should remember her sadness when Soyon died, and I hope she understands that there are those who care about her. Then again, she’s probably talking about worst case scenario. But I think there are so many good things she could achieve if she found a way to live on even in that situation. I’m fond of Erin so I’m intent on seeing her live to the end. She’s been through a lot and deserves a happy end. Real life isn’t fair like that but since this is fiction they can make it happen :)!

One minor thing that would have been cool is if the Queen told Erin she wanted the punishment system reworked for beastinarians. I still think being eaten alive by Touda is way too harsh. I doubt the series will touch on that anymore, though.

Episode 40: Falling into Shadow

 

Summary:

A bloodied Erin lands with Lilan on the Queen’s ship. Injured Sezans and civilians are scattered throughout the boat. Erin tearfully recalls the events that had just happened with Lilan ripping through all the Touda. She notices a child trapped by some rumble and a Sezan helps free her. One of the Queen’s attendants tells them she needs aid. The Sezan says he can tend to the child, and asks Erin to go help, since she’s from Kazalm. From the shore, Kiriku is in disbelief that an army of Touda was obliterated by a single beast-lord. He thinks his master will take advantage of this somehow. Damiya explains the Queen’s condition to Erin as she examines her; she explains that there is the possible case of internal bleeding inside the skull, but that she can’t say anything else without more time and a doctor. She then examines his minor injuries.

Meanwhile, Esal-sensei and the others prepare to send aid. The scene shifts back to the Queen’s boat, where Damiya marvels at how his pain has magically vanished. Erin proceeds to go back down and help the others, but Damiya questions her inability to help the Queen, since she’s an Arryo. They’re interrupted by Kiriku who tells Erin he’ll handle things here, and reminds her of Lilan. Damiya says she can go and Erin heads outside. She looks around for Ial and worries he’s been killed. She then spots him down below treating his men. Erin notices a wound on his arm, and he tells her not to worry. However, she warns him that a Touda’s fangs are poisonous and he needs an antidote. He still wishes her to tend to his men first, and Erin does that. She wonders if he was raised only to fight just like Touda, and whether he’ll ever be able to free himself of that fate. Erin then notices the Touda don’t have the signature crest of the Grand Duke.

Later, Kazalm’s ships arrive, but they didn’t bring the antidote. Erin says she’ll fly back to quickly get it, but Ial tells her to meet them at Sir Kazalm’s estate; they’re heading there for safety, in case the Grand Duke’s Touda attack again. Erin realizes they’ve mistakenly held the Grand Duke’s men responsible. Ial also recommends traveling on horse, since it’d be better to leave her beast-lord behind. As they turn to look at Lilan, Damiya is shown examining her from a safe distance.

Back at Kazalm, Erin updates Esal-sensei on the situation. Erin notices the blood on Lilan’s fur as she climbs down and recalls the horrible events; she fears its consequences. The Queen is treated at Sir Kazalm’s estate. Also, Erin arrives with the antidote and asks someone where Ial is. The man explains that he’s in a meeting for failing to protect the Queen. She requests that Ial be informed of her arrival after the meeting is over. Meanwhile, she treats the injured.

At the palace, Seimiya is informed of the Queen’s injuries and also of the Touda attack. She slightly faints on hearing this, though Nami catches her.

Ial is meanwhile criticized for the Sezans’ inability of defending the Queen, but he does not respond. He recalls Hagal’s words about how the Sezans would eventually become deficient if these same ignorant people stayed in power. Damiya eventually tells him he’ll receive his punishment later and dismisses him.

In the medical room, Erin tends to the wounded but many scream feverishly. This is replaced by a soothing calm when Erin decides to play the Bird of Dawn. Ial returns on the song’s end, while Kiriku hides himself from view. Ial inquires about his men, and she says they’ve all been treated. As she treats his wounds, Erin wonders why he didn’t come sooner. Ial claims he was occupied. Erin warns that his arm may not be usable again and wonders if he plans on throwing away what’s precious to him. Ial remembers when the Queen treated him during training, and responds how his arm was useless at a critical moment.

He then thanks her for saving them. Yet, Erin hopes he forgets what she did; Ial tells her this is impossible and that people will think she manipulated the beast-lord with Mist People magic. She wonders if he thinks that too, but Ial cannot answer definitely. However, he tells her if she did have the power, he wouldn’t be worried since she is a good-natured person. He apologizes that she had to save his life, since it probably won’t last much longer. Erin says his wounds aren’t life-threatening, but he explains that he’s talking about their country: the trunk supporting it will soon fall, and there is nothing the Sezans can do. He claims what really protected the country is not the Sezans or Grand Duke’s army, but the citizens’ love for the Queen. She is the reason they haven’t raided other countries because she hates war. However, the Holons and Wajyaku forget these beliefs, and will bring ruin. Erin then informs him that the attacking Touda weren’t from the Grand Duke, noting the absence of a crest.

He wonders how she would know something like that, and she explains her past: being raised in Ake, her mother’s execution, and her experience in the Queen’s quarter. She reveals everything except for Soyon controlling the Touda. Kiriku listens in on all of this. At the end, Ial sees Erin off, and she confidently remarks how there are many things he can still protect with his arm. He says that he’ll reinvestigate the attackers and won’t mention her mom to anyone; however, Erin tells him if he finds it necessary, then he should. Kiriku also watches her ride off and reflects on her past. When Ial thinks about their country’s conspiracy, he is unable to stop thinking about Erin, for she will undoubtedly be pulled in.

My Thoughts:

To sum it up: Erin and Ial development, Damiya is planning how to use Erin to his advantage, and Kiriku appears sympathetic towards Erin. Lilan fortunately returned to normal, and based on her reaction to Erin’s distress, she considers what happened no big deal. When they show a beast-lord’s red eyes I wonder if that’s just to show they’re hellbent on killing Touda versus an actual physical change. Either way, words don’t reach them in that mode.

I wanted to slap Damiya when he made that remark to Erin about helping the Queen. Erin should have just left when he let out that small cry noting he was injured. The Holons’ unrealistic perspective was portrayed during their meeting with Ial. It’s unreasonable to think that mere guards could go up against all those Touda. Then again, people like pointing fingers.

More interesting was how no one seemed to know the characteristics of the Grand Duke’s Touda. This makes Erin’s experience highly relevant and useful for Ial’s investigation. Also, some things are making more sense now. The Touda are the ones stolen from their nest long ago (the case of stolen Touda eggs). It’s obvious Damiya is the ringleader, especially since the series portrays him as creepy and likes to cast him in shadow with villain music. I’m still not sure what he’s exactly trying to accomplish. Even if he eliminated the Queen, he wouldn’t be ruler; although, he could manipulate Seimiya. It still doesn’t make sense to me since he has influence over the current Queen.

I’m not sure what to really think of Ial and Erin. From their encounters, there could be some spark of attraction, but it could just be a brother type of bond. Tomura is a more realistic candidate, but Erin might just be into men that can fight and be rough; more than likely it hasn’t crossed her mind, since she is beast-lord gung-ho. I figure if you’re going after Erin, you have to be direct with her.

One last thing is Kiriku’s ninja skills. How did Ial not at least detect him in the final scene? In any case he appears sympathetic to Erin. When he was first introduced I immediately thought he’d be a obvious baddie, but now it’s uncertain. Will he play a factor when Damiya and Erin finally have their showdown?
