Polio Vaccine Takes Off 11th July ( 1953 )
The growing number of victims affected by Polio is encouraging parents to bring children to Polio Vaccination clinics around the country in ever increasing numbers in the greatest mass inoculation in history hoping to stop the spread of the deadly disease ( Infantile Paralysis ) .

On the same day in 1977 The Medal of Freedom was awarded to Doctor Jonas E. Salk for his work on battling poliomyelitis / Polio.

'In God We Trust' 11th July ( 1955 ) President Eisenhower signed a bill requiring use of the inscription 'In God We Trust' on all paper money.

Rev Martin Luther King Jr 11th July ( 1977 ) The Medal of Freedom was awarded posthumously to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in a White House ceremony and presented by President Jimmy Carter.
The citation accompanying the medal was
" Martin Luther King, Jr., was the conscience of his generation. He gazed upon the great wall of segregation and saw that the power of love could bring it down. From the pain and exhaustion of his fight to fulfill the promises of our founding fathers for our humblest citizens, he wrung his eloquent statement of his dream for America. Coke Changes Formula 11th July ( 1985 ) The Coca Cola company makes one of worst decisions in marketing history when it decides to change it's original formula and introduces "New Coke", this was a resounding flop and the public did not like the taste, after just a short period the old coke product was reintroduced as "Classic Coke" .

Bombing Campaign Mumbai 11th July ( 2006 ) Bombay terrorist attack on trains kills more than 160 people and injures a further 460 when seven bombs are detonated on the train network in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai .

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" 10th July ( 1940 ) The Germans Luftwaffe begin bombing raids against Great Britain, signaling the start of the Battle of Britain, the bombing continued over major Ports and Cities across the UK for 3 months and the Royal Air Force ( RAF ) Spitfires and Hurricanes try to combat German Bf 109E while also trying to stop German Bombers ( Junkers Ju 87 ) reaching their destinations to drop their bombs, the new introduction of Radar along the English coast provided much needed intelegence for UK fighter pilots. Winston Churchill made many memorable speaches in World War II but one of the sentences that is his famous speach where he used the words "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few", refering to the allied pilots who faught against the German pilots in the Battle of Britain

Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" Released 10th July ( 1964 ) The Beatles release the "A Hard Day's Night" album as the soundtrack to their first film of the same name. The album included well known tracks which enter the charts as single's including:

John T. Scopes Trial Begins ( "Monkey Trial" 10th July ( 1925 ) John T. Scopes, a science teacher in Tennessee, was charged with violating the state's Butler Act, which made it illegal to teach evolution in Tennessee schools. The trial was based on the charge he did unlawfully and willfully teach in Tennessee schools certain theories that deny the story of the divine creation of man as told in the Bible. He was found guilty on July 21 and received a $100 fine.

Michael Fagan Brakes Into The Queens Bedroom 9th July ( 1982 ) 30-year-old Michael Fagan broke into Buckingham Palace morning and spent 10 minutes talking with Queen Elizabeth II in her bedroom before being arrested inside the palace at 3 a.m. Major questions were asked on how he evaded 43 soldiers, 24 police, 350 palace staff members, dog patrols, surveillance cameras, electronic listening devices and other equipment.

Enigma Code Broken 9th July ( 1941 ) British cryptologists break the secret code ( Enigma ) used by the German army to direct ground-to-air operations on the Eastern front.

Wing of York Minster Gutted By Fire 9th July ( 1984 ) A 760-year-old wing of York Minster, the largest medieval cathedral in Britain, was gutted by a fierce fire started by lightning. A rescue party trying to save some of the historic and valuable artifacts from the burning cathedral including tapestries and silver candlesticks.

Roswell Timeline 7th July ( 1947 ) William Brazel notices strange debris while working on the Foster ranch, where he was foreman, some 70 miles (110 km) north of Roswell
7th July: Roswell Army Air Field. Major Jesse Marcel collects debris 75 miles northwest of Roswell, New Mexico, scattered over an area 300 years wide and ¾ of a mile long. This led to rumors of an alien crash.
8th July: The Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) issue a press release stating that personnel had recovered a crashed "flying disc" from a ranch near Roswell, sparking intense media interest, later that day the press release is amended to say a "weather balloon" had been recovered .
1978: All goes quiet for 30 years until 1978 when Stanton T. Friedman interviews Major Jesse Marcel, who was involved with the original recovery of the debris in 1947 who expressed his belief that the military had covered up the recovery of an alien spacecraft.

Women Admitted as officer cadets US Navy 6th July ( 1972 ) The United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland where it educates and commissions officers admits women for the first time in its history with the induction of 81 female midshipmen ( officer cadets ).

Air Pollution Control Act 6th July ( 1955 ) The Federal Air Pollution Control Act was implemented for research into causal analysis and control of car-emission pollution. The killer fog in London that had left over 4,000 dead created concern around the world over the effects of emissions pollution and the act made the funds available for analysis and control of car-emission pollution.

Train Fire Kills 11 6th July ( 1978 ) A fire on the Penzance to Paddington sleeper leaves 11 dead who had been in sleeping compartments and many more injured.

Price Of A Barrel Of Oil drops below $30.00 6th July ( 2000 ) Saudi Arabia has announced it may well break from OPEC and make a unilateral decision to increase it's oil production by 500,000 barrels a day to ease oil prices. This will be in addition to the Opec announcement to increase production by 708,000 barrels a day. The price of crude oil has tripled in just 18 months from $10.00 a barrel to $30.00 a barrel causing concerns over a world wide recession due to inflation pressures. ( The price of gas in the US has now soared to $2.00 a gallon breaking new ground. )

Anne Frank 6th July ( 1942 ) Anne Frank and her family take refuge in a secret sealed-off area of an Amsterdam warehouse to escape being sent to Nazi concentration camps. In 1944 the Nazi Gestapo discovered the hiding place and the family was shipped off to a concentration camp, Anne Frank died in 1945 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany of typhus.

Toxteth Riots 5th July ( 1981 ) Riots have broken out in Toxteth, Liverpool with between 200 and 300 youths involved in looting, attacking police, cars and shops with petrol bombs and bricks.
The rioters have been turning over cars and turning them into barricades, most of the youths are wearing balaclava's to evade detection and this seems to be an orchestrated attack on the police with leaders handing out petrol bombs and orders on where they are to be used.

Osama bin Laden 4th July ( 1999 ) Osama bin Laden who is on the FBI's "10 most wanted list" is now believed to have established his Al-Qaeda terrorist base in Afghanistan. He is wanted by the US on charges of international terrorism in connection with the 1998 bombing of American embassies in Africa and last year's attack on the USS Cole in Yemen.
Osama bin Laden has called for a holy war against the United States, saying it was the duty of Muslims to free their land of American occupation.
This was 2 years before his involvement in the 9/11 suicide attacks by al-Qaeda members upon the United States.

US Celebrates 200th Birthday 4th July ( 1976 ) The 200th birthday Bicentennial celebrations of the United States independence from British Rule.

New York Subway Fares Increase To 20 cents 4th July ( 1966 ) The New York Transit authority chose the holiday to increase it's minimum fares on Subway and Busses from 15 cents to 20 cents. As of 4th July 2009 the minimum fare on New York Subway is $2.25 11 times as expensive. Rationing Ends in Britain 4th July ( 1954 ) Rationing of meat and bacon through the use of ration books ends bringing to an end rationing in Great Britain which had been in place for 14 years since the beginning of World War II.

During the war all kinds of goods were rationed including:

Clothes
Canned and dried fruit
Chocolate biscuits
Jelly
Mincemeat.
Petrol

Butcher of Lyon 3rd July ( 1987 ) The Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie / Butcher of Lyon and the former head of Gestapo who was extradited from Bolivia to face charges in France is found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment.

British Destroy French Fleet 3rd July ( 1940 ) Following the German invasion and occupation of France, French warships fled to the port of Mers-el-Kebir in Algeria . Britain gave the french Vichi government the options of the following for it's French Navy
1. Join British naval forces in the fight against Germany,
2. Hand the ships over to British crews,
3. Disarm the French Navy Ships
4. Scuttle the ships

The French refused , So Britain fearing the French Ships would be used by the Germans to help with an invasion of England circled the port with British Warships and opened fire on the French fleet, killing 1,250 French sailors, damaging the battleship Dunkerque and destroying the Bretagne and the Provence.

US Shoots Down Iranian Passenger Jet 3rd July ( 1988 ) The U.S. Navy cruiser Vincennes shoots down Iran Air Flight 655 in the Strait of Hormuz the aircraft was an Iranian passenger jet that it mistakes for a hostile Iranian fighter aircraft in the Persian Gulf.

Rolls Royce Sold To Volkswagen 3rd July ( 1998 ) After many months of negotiations, together with a bidding war with BMW and high court battles Rolls Royce is sold to Volkswagen for £479m. Volkswagen has stated that the manufacture of Rolls Royce cars will continue at Rolls-Royce's Crewe headquarters in England. The Saga of who owned the rights to produce cars with the famous Rolls Royce emblem continued for the next few years as unknown to Volkswagen they had not bought the rights to use the RR Logo. Over the next few years BMW and Volkswagen did come to an arrangement where Volkswagen own and build Bentleys with Volkswagen Engines at the old Rolls Royce factory in Crewe in England and BMW own and produce Rolls Royce Cars with BMW engines at Goodwood in England

Live 8 Concerts 2nd July ( 2005 ) Live 8 concerts happen in members of the G8 cities around the world and South Africa to highlight the aims of the UK's Make Poverty History campaign and the Global Call for Action Against Poverty, hoping to put pressure on the meeting of political leaders of the G8 countries. The Live 8 concerts are organised by Bob Geldof and a number of other well known pop icons. Unlike other earlier concerts to raise money for those starving these concerts were designed to highlight, educate and put pressure on the Leaders of the G8 countries to do more for the world's poor.
Even before the concerts some measure of success is gained when the G8 finance ministers agree to cancel the debt owed by 18 of the world's poorest countries.

Interstate Highways 1st July ( 1956 ) : President Eisenhower called for $50 billion to be spent over 13 years for the construction of over 42,500 miles of interstate highways using the Interstate Highway Revenue Act which was to be funded by taxing gasoline, currently this tax is 19 cents for each gallon of Gas

The Somme 1st July ( 1916 ) : After bombing the area of no mans land between German and English Forces in Somme region of France the English soldiers went over the trenches expecting little German resistance , but the Germans had large numbers of Machine Guns trained on the area and by the end of the day 20,000 British soldiers were dead and another 40,000 had injuries, this became one of the worst military decisions in history and the offensive was eventually stopped after 4 1/2 months with 600,000 British and French soldiers killed, wounded, or missing in the action.

Handover from British Rule 1st July ( 1997 ) Hong Kong is handed back to the Chinese authorities after 156 years as a British colony. Tung Chee-hwa was sworn in as Hong Kong's new leader.

Gone With The Wind 30th June ( 1936 ) : The book Gone with the Wind is Published. In 1939 Gone With The Wind was made into the Oscar Winning Film .

Tonya Harding 30th June ( 1994 ) : The U.S. Figure Skating Association ( USFSA ) stripped Tonya Harding of her her 1994 national Figure Skating championship title and banned her from the organization for life for an attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan. The investigation by the USFSA decided Harding knew about the attack before it happened and displayed "a clear disregard for fairness, good sportsmanship and ethical behavior".

Federal Aid Highway Act 29th June ( 1956 ) : Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 bill into law. The National Interstate and Defense Highways Act was for the construction of 41,000 miles of interstate highways over a 20-year period and was the largest public works project ever undertaken. For each highway created 90 percent of construction costs were paid by the Federal budget and 10% from the local state.
