A few weeks ago I read a post by Tsh from Simple Mom called A Day in the Life. Honestly, I was surprised at just how fascinating I thought it was! There’s something fun about getting a peek into the nitty gritty of someone else’s life, isn’t there?

Then I saw this post by Ali Edwards about documenting a day in her life, and her plan to add it in with her Project Life album.

And I was sold.

So on Wednesday of this week I snapped pictures and jotted notes in a word file all day long. It was a fairly typical day, I suppose. Now that we own a small business and I stay/work at home our schedules are a little more fluid. Mondays and Thursdays are school days for Miles and I try to squeeze in flight lessons too, of course!

I’m going to print this 8.5 x 11 photo page as well as the text below, and put them in my Project Life album for this week.

Notes from the day:

4:50 am Patrick’s alarm goes off. Two days a week he goes to a 5:30 class at the gym. I happily roll back over, but I’m expecting Miles any minute because if one person is stirring, he’s usually up next.

6:45 am Patrick comes back in, I haven’t moved since he left and Miles is still sleeping soundly!

7:00 am I drag myself out of bed and brush my teeth.  I ask Patrick about the weather (trying to decide if flying is an option) and get an impromptu lesson on reading the weather metar.  I didn’t score well. (Plus the weather is bad, no flying today!)

7:30 am Miles finally awakes! He’s in a happy mood and is thrilled when I offer to make him waffles (the frozen variety). I make myself a smoothie and Patrick reheats some breakfast casserole.

8:00 am We watch cartoons and check email while we’re eating breakfast. Then I hurry to get my running clothes on.

8:30 am Hurrying to get Miles dressed and heading out the door to meet Heidi to run!

9:00 am Drop Miles at the gym daycare and meet Heidi to run. We debate for a few minutes about running inside or out on the trail. Decide to run in due to her hamstring strain. She’ll be on the elliptical and I’ll run on the treadmill.

9:30 am After lots of stretching and even more chatting we get going. I walk for a ¼ mile and then start my run! Only plus with the treadmill is getting to watch TV while you run. Live with Kelly gets me through 3.1 miles in 38 minutes. Not too shabby.

10:30 am More stretching and cooling down and then I pick up Miles and head home.

10:40 am Detour. Miles spots Starbucks on the way and says, “I was a sweet boy at da gym. I get a cakepop?” So I cave. I call Patrick at work to see if he wants Starbucks too. Of course! So I pick up a coffee for him as well and then swing by his office on our way home.

11:00 am Back home! Miles plays with his trains for a bit while I jump in the shower. Running 3 miles really works up a sweat!

11:30 am Lunch. We eat and watch an episode of Little Einsteins. While that’s finishing up, I tidy up the kitchen and start a load of laundry.

12:00 pm  Miles goes down for a nap. Ahhhh….

12:15 pm  I sit down to pay bills and do some work online.

12:30 pm Patrick comes home for lunch. We only live a few minutes from his office. He’s on a work call so I keep working too.

1:00 pm Done with bills and sorting mail. I get up to check on Miles. Still out! That’s a surprise. So I start another load of laundry and work on his Valentines for his school party tomorrow. Patrick heads back to the office.

1:50 pm Miles is finally up!  He’s playing in his room and I decide to go clean out my car. It’s become a trash heap.

2:00-3:00 pm Folding laundry, picking up the house, playing trains with Miles.

3:00 pm Hit a wall. Running usually gives me MORE energy, but on the day of, I tend to feel really tired early in the evening. Whoa. Vegged out on the couch for a bit.

3:30 pm Ok. Must get things done.  Getting ready for my haircut appointment. I always want to dress cute when I’m meeting a new stylist. Like if I’m dressed cute they’ll give me a better haircut? Not sure about that theory.

4:30 pm Dressed and ready. I check email and etc and Miles watches some cartoons.

5:00 pm Patrick comes home and he takes over with Miles while I head out to my appointment.

5:30 pm – 7:00 pm Haircut! I love, love it! Took awhile because we decided to straighten it to see how it would look. That’s always a process.

7:15 pm I’m late! Patrick and Miles are already at our Community Group, we’re at the Mason’s tonight.  Love hearing about the guys’ trip to Africa. Love the time to hang with the sweet women in the group.

9:45 pm Finally drag ourselves home! Miles hates to leave and cries about a dime he wanted to take with us. It wasn’t ours.

10:00 pm  Put Miles to bed. LATE for him.  Patrick and I putter around the house some: cleaning up the kitchen, feeding the dog, and watch a netflix show about Alaska. Or was it sharks? Clearly I was dozing off.

11:00 pm We both crash hard tonight after working out earlier in the day.

So glamourous, right? I like the idea of doing this a few times a year though, even if it seems boring, because I think it will be fun to look back on down the road.

So what did you do on Wednesday?

I’ve already crossed #13 Take a Photography Class off my 30 by 30 List, but when Brandy from Bella Pop Photography contacted me about her online classes, she offered a deal I couldn’t refuse.

Brandy is a wedding photographer who decided to expand her business by teaching photography classes as well. She saw my 30 Things post and wondered if I would be interested in being a guinea pig in her first ever Shooting in Manual online class.

Let me think.

YES.

We’re on week 2, and so far I am so impressed. I love that I can work at my own pace, watching the videos and reading the lesson when I get a few minutes here and there.  And I really love the private facebook group where all the class members can share their weekly photos and get feedback.

These photos are from the first week. No, they aren’t going to win any prizes, BUT they are taken completely in manual mode. That’s a big deal for this auto-addict.

I can’t wait to learn more, and continue growing my photography skills.

P.S. She’s starting another Shooting in Manual class on March 1st. Maybe this would be a good Valentine’s present??

As a part of my 30 by 30 list, I’ve decided to learn how to fly! More on the how and why in my Learning to Fly posts.

Sooo… an alternate title for this video would be: The Time I Almost Puked on My Instructor.

I don’t get motion sick easily and I have no trouble doing steep turns with Patrick or Adam (my instructor) but something about doing it myself makes me so ill. At a particularly whiney moment (that I edited out) I complained that it felt like we were going too fast. To which Adam replied “It’s supposed to be fast. Patrick would be so ashamed.”

Clearly my goal is not to become an aerobatic pilot. I’ll stick with nice, calm flight thankyouverymuch.

During the next lesson we worked on a lot of take-offs and landings.  I could definitely use more work in this area, but I’m getting a little better.

I’ve heard the word “solo” mentioned here and there.  Excuse me while I go breathe into a paper bag, okay?

Top photo: My brother Walt brought his kids over to play today and I got this shot of my nephew Will. Bright cheeked and happy, he had been playing HARD!

Bottom photos: (L) We picked Patrick up from the airport Monday night, and the first thing Miles wanted to do was show him trains on the computer. (R) Miles asked me today, “Could you take a picture of this smile?” So of course, I obliged.

In the middle: I printed one of The Tiny Twig’s free downloads this week, and I really like it!

Top photos: (L) We go to a Community Group/Bible Study on Wednesday nights. Patrick and Miles were having a little fun before we got started. (R) Friday night we had dinner at my in-laws’ house and my sis-in-law Nicole read a few books to our boys.

Bottom photos: (L) Screen shot from my flight lesson last Thursday! We did lots of takeoffs and landings.  (R) An extra instagram photo. The weather has been incredible here the last few weeks! I even broke out the Chacos and rolled up my jeans one afternoon.

In the middle: For Saturday, I took this picture of my dad with my iPhone. My parents gave my brother and I SUCH a hard time when we got tattoos, and now look who has one?! We were so shocked.

I love to listen to music, but honestly have very little talent for it.

Patrick? Zero. He hardly even listens to music.

Miles LOVES music, and he loves to sing.

Unfortunately, he picked up his parents’ skills.

A career in music is probably not in his future. Sorry buddy.

Last week I mentioned that our company, Nflightcam, was teaming up with Bent Prop Productions to film Vol. 5 of Big Rocks and Long Props.

We picked Patrick up at the airport on Monday night and he has been working furiously to get the footage edited.  You can see a short promo video here:

Taking Megan of SortaCrunchy’s lead and spilling all the stuff I was into for January. A few days late.

Also? This is my youngest nephew, Gavin. Isn’t he adorably hilarious in the picture?

What I’m Into this Month- January 2012:

On My Nightstand:  Usually  I’m a start a book, finish, then pick another kind of reader, but for some reason I find myself in the middle of a bunch right now.  Off the top of my head there’s Walking on Water by Madeleine L’Engle, Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill, and I’ve been listening to Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad on audio in the car.

And there are several more waiting for me when I finish those! All my flying has been getting in the way of my reading.

T.V. Shows:  We don’t have cable so I rely on our apple TV/iTunes/netflix for TV when I have the time.  I’m really enjoying Once Upon a Time, Flying Wild Alaska, and Downton Abbey.

Movies:  Do endless loops of Thomas the Train movies count? Seriously, I’m not sure if I watched a whole movie in January. Must correct this for February. Suggestions?

In My Kitchen: Nothing too exciting. Patrick and I are both dieting (ish) so it’s been a little blah. Also, I think there’s something wrong with my oven, I’ve been burning everything lately. Or it’s just my cooking skills?

In My Ears: I’ve been doing lots of running, so mostly I’ve been listening to obnoxious pop music to keep me going.  When I’m not running I’m listening to Mumford & Sons, The Civil Wars (PS Did you hear their Safe and Sound that’s going to be on The Hunger Games soundtrack?? AH!), and a few others that I can’t think of.  I need some new music.

What I’m Looking Forward to Next Month: Blissdom (of course!), a lot more flying as I inch my way towards soloing (yikes), and an online photography class I’m taking.

Project Life Tuesday is here again! Week 4 and the last full week of January.

We had a full week, and I’m going to add an insert with more pictures from Patrick’s trip when I get my hands on those photos.

So far, my process has been to take the photos throughout the week and then send them to Walgreens online on Saturday night, pick them up on Sunday and finish my pages on Sunday afternoon.  I’m only spending 1 to 2 hours TOTAL including editing photos, uploading them, and working on the pages. It feels really doable to do it this way instead of waiting until the end of the month like I did in 2010. I’m really hopeful that I’ll be able to keep up this time!

Did you notice that I switched from the orange Clementine album to the basic black? It may seem like a silly little swap, but I really like the idea of having the black album so that all the years will match if I want to display them on a bookshelf in the future.

I really like it.

Top photo: Sunday- Miles and I went to our hometown to visit family while Patrick is on his trip. We had dinner at my in-laws’ house. He had fun playing with our friends Betty and Scott.

Bottom Photos: (L) My Mom and I took our cars to be washed and detailed! Such a rare treat, but I love having a clean car. (R) Time for a haircut! Ms Betty trimmed him up so he isn’t so shaggy.

Top Photos: (L) The weather has been so crummy (and with Patrick out of town) I haven’t done much flying this week, but I have done a lot of video editing. I’m starting to get the hang of Final Cut Pro X.

Bottom Photos: (L) We accidentally left Miles’ blankie in Mountain Home ( oh NO.) but Nana saved the day by overnighting it to us. Miles was overjoyed when the mailman came on Thursday.  (R) An instagram photo of Macey after she got herself all muddy in the backyard!

Middle: I took a screenshot of some “face time” with Patrick.  He’s been in some remote locations and we’ve only spoken a few times. Miles loved getting to see him!

Extra: On Friday we had Miles’ 3 year check up. I added his stats to the photo itself, but I wanted to write a little more about the visit so I added a bigger card behind the photo and stuck a little tab on it so I wouldn’t forget it was in there!

Sometimes I can’t believe how funny Miles is getting. We just never know what is going to come out of his mouth next!

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the last few weeks.

Patrick watched Miles while I went to an early morning yoga class a few weeks back.  When I walked in the door, Miles came running and announced loudly, “I need my OWN money!”  Turns out, Daddy and Miles had a discussion about wanting toys all the time and the need for him to earn some of his own money to do some shopping.  Well, turns out he doesn’t really want to do the chores.  He just wants to sigh and say sadly, “I still need my own money.”

Miles heard the phrase, “Oh crap” on an obnoxious youtube cartoon, and we’ve had to have a discussion about how “crap” is not a nice word for little boys to say.  He doesn’t really understand why, and thinks it’s a pretty funny thing for little boys to say.  So anyway, we’ve been talking about “crap” a lot in the last few days.

He came out of his room today and said, “I’m sorry about saying crap.”  I said, “When did you say that?”.  ”Just a minute ago in my room.”   I think he told on himself just to say the word out loud again.

He also overheard Patrick’s dad saying crap the other day, and he told him sternly, “Crap is NOT a nice word. You should say, ‘Aww man’ instead. T.C. was thoroughly chastized.

Miles came up to me the other day and told me he wanted to learn to “jiggle”.  I was a little confused about it until he showed me on one of his Thomas the Train shows there was a guy learning to JUGGLE.  Oh. Well that’s a different story.

My friend Sarah gave Miles an airplane themed watch for Christmas.  The face has a little helicopter and clouds on it.  When asked what time it was, he got a contemplative look on his face and said, “It’s cloud time.”

On the way home from the gym  a few days ago he said, “Mommy, I need my very own car.” I said, “Well, you already have a lot of toy cars.” He replied, “No, like the one you’re driving!”

You have a few more years buddy.

I feel like there could be a million more. I wish I had a tape recorder on this kid all the time because he is just at a hilarious stage.

As a part of my 30 by 30 list, I’ve decided to learn how to fly! More on the how and why in my Learning to Fly posts.

I’ve gotten a little behind on my flight lesson videos since Patrick is out of town. He’s been the main video editor around here so I had to teach myself to use Final Cut Pro X! (So basically, cut me a little slack on this video. I’m still getting the hang of it.)

This lesson was about a week and a half ago, and I can already see progress since then.  Mostly we covered climbing at different airspeeds and some turning techniques.

And from the beginning of the video you can see that talking on the radio is not one of my best skills yet either. I feel like I’m learning Greek.

You know, I almost feel like I’m getting the hang of this. That is, when I’m not trying to run us off the runway during takeoff.  I saved that delightful little clip for the blooper reel. Oh yes, there will be an outtakes version of these videos.

I should have one more video ready in a day or so, and then, fingers crossed, be caught up on my editing.
