Kegels: The Best Sexercise

Kegels for health and pleasure

From guest blogger Aneros

Pelvic floor exercise has been noted to date back to ancient Greek and Roman times. Its popularity was picked up again and published about in 1936 by a physical therapist named Margaret Morris. Nevertheless, pelvic floor exercise didn't achieve broader recognition until the mid-1940’s, when Dr. Arnold Kegel was credited for developing an exercise to help women who were experiencing bladder control issues. To the relief of many women, what came to be known as 'Kegel exercises' not only resulted in better bladder control, but also had some pretty awesome side effects: BETTER SEX.

Thanks, Doc!

Yes, it's true, Kegel exercises strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which support the uterus, bladder, small intestine and rectum, thus serving as both therapy and preventative medicine for a host of pelvic floor and other problems. The side effects of these exercises (and yes, Kegel exercise is just that, and should be considered a workout!) include strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles, better circulation of blood to the vagina, and thus a better ability to achieve and sustain orgasm! And the beauty is, you can do them anytime and anywhere!

Impromptu Kegel Krew!

The pelvic and prostate pros over at Aneros, have applied their science and technology to develop a few perfect products for pelvic floor exercise and we can't wait to share them with you! Take it away Aneros!

Pelvic and Prostate Pros Aneros

Pelvic floor exercise, (like prostate massage) has a history that extends back millennia ago to the teachings of Taoism in China and Tantra in India. There was even mention of it in the writings of Hippocrates in ancient Greece and Galen in Roman times. But from there the practice fell into relative obscurity until 1936 when a British physical therapist, Margaret Morris, published “Maternity and Post-Operative Exercises” that included illustrations of pelvic floor muscle exercise. However, it wasn’t until 1948 and series of articles published by gynecologist Dr. Arnold Kegel when the importance of the practice finally gained the prominence it deserved. Kegel’s work involved the idea of achieving “pelvic fitness” through exercise, with much of his focus dedicated to treating urinary incontinence in women following child birth. In the decades since, Kegel’s name has become synonymous with pelvic floor exercise and other benefits have come to light including:

Improved pelvic circulation

Increased vaginal muscle tone and lubrication

Increased arousal and stronger orgasms

Vaginal muscle relaxation, for women who experience pain during penetration

Greater control of the vaginal muscles for more sensation for both partners.

Kegeltown, USA!

Ironically, the typical Kegel instructions we see so often today; hold pelvic floor muscles tight for an 8 count, relax for a 10 count,… bear little resemblance to Kegel’s original regimen which stressed 4 factors; muscle education, feedback, progressive intensity and resistance.

This last factor is something conspicuously absent in the more casual Kegel programs. The need for resistance (something to contract against) not only promotes muscle growth but also provides a feedback element as well. Kegel originally used a perineometer, a medical device of his own design for resistance and feedback. In recent years, there are great number of Kegel training products that have been introduced, with most being some variation of ben wa balls.

ANEROS, a company with a long history of patented sexual health and wellness products, examined Kegel’s recommendations, and researched female pelvic floor anatomy in detail, with the goal of engineering a product that promoted pelvic floor muscle strength while delivering the added benefit of pleasure! The result is Evi®, the first Aneros toy designed specifically for vaginal fitness and ViVi®, the premier hands-free, vibrating, Kegelcizer and G-spot massager.

The Aneros Evi. Say hello to my little friend!

With its anatomical design, Evi offers a sensual and unique alternative to Kegel balls. When inserted, it effortlessly exercises your Kegel muscles while gently rocking between the clitoris and G-Spot. Turn it upside down for easy access oral sex and G-spot stim with a partner. Lying on your back with your knees pulled up slightly, insert the Evi slowly until it is flush against your clitoris. Contract and relax your pelvic floor muscles to get a rhythm going and repeat!

The Vivi is coming!

Vivi is a slightly modified vibrating enhancement of the Evi. It is easily inserted, finding the correct internal and external orientations automatically. Once inside, ViVi functions in harmony with a woman’s body, toning pelvic floor muscles while delivering focused stimulation of the G-spot and clitoris. ViVi is uniquely balanced so it is propelled by internal contractions only. Pelvic floor contractions pivot ViVi’s outside arm on the clitoris while the body of the device is driven inward and upward toward the G-spot. Vivi also comes with a Smartphone app that includes a Kegel Workout menu for those who want to receive reminders (a vibrating pulse) throughout the day. In this way it’s possible to create your own workout regimen, gradually increasing muscle strength through repetition!

Medical professions agree, developing and maintaining pelvic floor muscle strength is one of the keys to sexual health and vitality. The Aneros Evi is already a staple in the pelvic floor and pleasure markets and Vivi will be released soon! Both are powerful tools for toning and preserving pelvic floor muscle integrity while introducing women to new levels of pleasure.

I mean, who needs a gym??

Creating Meaningful Dom/sub Dynamics

FROM NEGOTIATION TO IMPACT: CREATING MEANINGFUL D/s DYNAMICS

Guest blog from Sarah Tomchesson,

Sex Specialist and Head of Business Operations

Claim and reclaim your sexual power.

As discussions of consent, the devastating toll of rape culture, and abuse of power and privilege fill our feeds and permeate our consciousness, it is as complicated a time as ever to be educating on kink and erotic power play. Yet, here we are in the middle of presenting a new series on creating meaningful Dominant/submissive dynamics.

The national conversation taking place right now around #MeToo and Kavanaugh’s confirmation despite credible sexual assault claims, serves as a potent reminder for some of us that (re)claiming our sexual power, and doing so in our own authentic (and sometimes kinky AF) ways, is one small way we can subvert power structures that do not serve us.

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

The politics of kink, and the interplay of our personal identities and sexualities is a personal dialogue Mistress Mary and I have been having as sex educators for years. Over the last year, themes and questions that came up more and more in our conversations centered on power and privilege. Are we still feeling empowered by the fantasies that excited our younger selves? When does it feel good to lean into versus subvert traditional power dynamics in play? How do you know if you’ve tapped into your authentic erotic voice or if you’re driven by your partners’ fantasy or society’s/culture’s idea of how someone in your identity “should” be sexy? These conversations have been a great reminder for me that our sexuality and desires are constantly evolving and that, like all things, our sexual journey is a process that does not have an end point. Rather, our sexual selves have to change and grow in order to thrive. It is from these conversations that our 3 part workshop From Negotiation to Impact: Creating Meaningful D/s Dynamics was born!

One's sexual journey is a process.

The goal of this series is to help those with little to no kink experience be able to identify their fantasies, negotiate them with a partner, and gain the hands-on skills needed to confidently explore power dynamics and kink scenes. For more advanced players, the series aims to help participants evaluate the roles they embody in their play, how their personal identities inform their sexual identities, and to dive deeply into the root of fantasies to better understand them, get kinkier with them, and create more nuanced dynamics with play partners.

The starting point of the series, and a great starting point for crafting any meaningful D/s dynamic, is to do some self-reflection. A great question to ask yourself is “How do I want to embody my Dominance or my submission?”

IDENTIFYING YOUR PERSONAL DOM/sub STYLE

Mistress Mary’s signature exercise for thinking about how to embody a Dominant or submissive stance that is authentic to you is to think about your Dom/sub icon. For instance, as a Dom are you more of a Grace Jones or a Beyoncé? Ripley from Aliens, or Tyler Durden from Fight Club? As a sub, are you more of a Marilyn Monroe or a Gomez Addams? Magic Mike, or Harlequin? There are so many great icons you can think up!

What kind of Dom are you?

This method of reflecting on and embodying your Dominant or submissive energy is more nuanced than thinking about energy exchange within a defined role like teacher/student, or daddy/little girl or boi. For instance, a Grace Jones Dom may source their power through gender exploration, performativity, costumery, and use their physicality to keep their submissive on their toes, slightly intimidated and overpowered. A Beyoncé Dom, on the other hand, may use similar building blocks to a different effect. A Beyoncé Dom earns your total worship and wields their femininity, voice, costumery, and physical presence to gain your affection, amazement, and awe. Similarly, a Marilyn Monroe style sub may play up their sensuality, naughty sweetness, and coyly seek attention as their means of showing devotion. Meanwhile, a Gomez Addams sub also wants to show their devotion, but would likely dote on their Dom, eagerly accept any and all service duties and heap on praise in order to show how devoted they are.

What kind of sub are you?

When you break down the energy you want to give and receive in your play in this way, it can help you not only find your authentic, kinky self, but also identify the kinds of partners you should play with. If I were a kinky matchmaker, I would love to pair a Gomez Addams sub with a Beyoncé Dom to receive the kind of worship they truly deserve!

YOUR KINKY TOOLBOX

Tools of the trade. Rope, slapper, cuffs and collars, check!

In addition to thinking about how you like to give and receive energy and power in your play, it can also be helpful to develop a toolbox that supports you. Think about what you have to work with as a Dom/sub – your body, how you carry yourself, your voice, the language you use, your clothing, props, etc. Do you dominate by barking commands sternly and often or do you use your words sparingly and only whisper your orders when you do? Perhaps your subs are not worth the breath it takes to utter a command and instead you point and direct with your finger or crop and roll your eyes in disappointment regularly because of the inherent inferior nature of your playmates. Do you wear heals or boots to stomp around (or on) your subs? Are there articles of clothing that help with your posture? Perhaps you wear sexy undergarments that only get revealed if your submissive is really well-behaved.

What is your Dom style?

As a sub, do you find that being on the floor or on your knees helps you get into sub space? In that case, let your play partner know that you need to start all scenes there! Does it help you to feel submissive if you keep your eyes down? Do you speak in a meek voice and stutter on your words or are you bratty, defiant and mock your Dom every time they speak? Do you wear a collar to symbolize your submission, a buttoned up ensemble with glasses, or nothing at all? Identifying a Dom/sub style or icon that you want to emulate AND finding all the tools that will help you to embody and explore that energy stance can help you break out of stale dynamics in your play.

What is your sub style?

Here is a great exercise is to describe your Dom/sub style. Start with a few adjectives, then identify what clothing, body language, ways of speaking, words to use, and actions you can take that will make you feel your most Dominant or submissive. Once you have some ideas, try writing a paragraph describing your Dom/sub self. As an example:

“I am a Dominant who is assertive, seductive, and wants to be worshipped. I wear heels, and red lipstick to feel sexy. I like to stand tall and look down at my subs while holding a crop. I like to give rewards for good behavior, such as the opportunity to touch me. I give orders softly and inflict pain sparingly. I plan out my scenes carefully and with great detail. I excite my subs with slow pacing and sporadic peaks of intensity.”

Write it down. Work it out. VISUALIZE.

Once you have the building blocks in place for asserting your Dominance or giving your submission in play, you’re able to enter into more meaningful negotiations with play partners and engage in nuanced scene exploration!

I know, with all of the tech out there some of you might be thinking, “Why a smart vibrator?” And why Lioness?

A lot has changed since the 1980s, but research on female sexuality hasn’t advanced much since then. It’s not for a lack of interest—global taboos, personal discomfort, and lack of funding have held us back, and it doesn’t look like things are going to get much better on their own…

Sex (Research) Doesn’t Pay

In a recent New York Times article, author Hallie Lieberman took a deep dive into the history — past and present — of the Kinsey Institute, a leading sex research institute in the United States founded by Alfred Kinsey in the mid-20th century.

She didn’t have a great prognosis for the future of sexual pleasure, nor did the current director of the Kinsey Institute:

“Kinsey has to have some kinds of priorities to survive in the future. We cannot focus simply on things like sexual pleasure. We can’t because there’s no funding for it.”

— Sue Carter, Director of the Kinsey Institute, a leading sex research institute in the United States

There are a few reasons that Lieberman covers, but one of the most worrying ones is that in December 2016, the Kinsey Institute moved from being an independent nonprofit organization with an independent board of directors to merging with Indiana University and only answering to the university’s administration.

Needless to say, Indiana University (and especially current governor Eric Holcomb) are not fans of the Kinsey Institute.

Knowledge is Power

What happens in research doesn’t exist in a bubble. It affects all of us. That’s why the kind of work that we’re doing at Lioness is especially important right now. Sexual pleasure is more than sex. Sexual pleasure is essential to everyone’s lives. There’s so much more to learn and we’ve barely gotten started. It affects our self-confidence, our relationships, our intimacy, and even our health. The lack of information available affects our ability to talk about sex and sexuality, especially for women.

What we enjoy and how it changes over time is a subject of taboo. It’s an awkward topic to bring up with friends and family, and the societal discomfort around female sexuality makes it difficult to find reliable sources of information that we can comfortably and privately consult. Like other aspects of our health, there’s no one-size-fits-all guide. Sometimes your health changes and you have to relearn your own body to live a better, happier life.

My Journey

The topic of pleasure and the effects of its accompanying taboos were clear to me even before I (Liz) started my sexual wellness company, Lioness. Before developing Lioness, a vibrator and tool for sexual self-experimentation, I was in and around the sexuality space for nearly a decade — first as an artist, then as a sales person and educator. I first noticed something was amiss about our societal understanding of sexuality when, as part of an art show, I created a giant photograph of a vagina and some people couldn’t recognize what it was, even if it was right in front of them staring them in the face. There were even women, young and old, who couldn’t recognize a body part they‘ve also had for their entire lives. I was shocked by the number of people who thought my photograph was of “two figures dancing”. Representatives of my alma mater tried—actually, demanded—to purchase the piece over everything else in my art collection until they were told what it really was…

When I sold intimacy products to women, I ended up talking to hundreds of women from all walks of life about everything from simple questions to their deepest-held secrets. I discovered that we all have questions but few places to get real guidance or answers, and again, everyone is different so no solution or method of learning suits everybody.

Knowledge to the People

I started Lioness as a step toward helping women discover their own answers. We are a team of designers and engineers building a vibrator that helps you understand, discover, and take control of your own body. It’s paired with an app that allows you to easily visualize what your body is telling you and ask questions to a supportive community. Using advanced biometric sensing and statistical methods, we help you characterize your sexuality — how fast you get aroused, how long it generally takes to orgasm, and when sex would feel best — both individually and within the diverse sexual spectrum of the aggregate female population. All designed and packaged into an elegant consumer product you can use in the comfort of your own home.

As a company with strong female technology, design, and executive leadership, our product is women-centric at its core, from our choices to use the same materials as those used in medical devices to tailoring our device’s ergonomics to how women actually hold vibrators. Women-centric technology is a small space, and it’s high time there are some new advancements out there for 50% of the world’s population designed by those who share the same experience.

Lioness is a way to experiment with your own body on your own terms. It is a vibrator that is designed with a suite of sensors, so you can see your own sexual response and orgasm. You can use it with the Lioness app like a sex diary to get a better sense of what works over time, to self-experiment, and as a means for opening up the conversation about pleasure with your partner or yourself. The Lioness creates words for pleasure that did not exist before, because the information simply did not exist.

Partnering with Research

We’ve already started to see the nuances of female pleasure, both individually and on a societal level over time. While the data has been anonymized and encrypted since the beginning, soon Lioness customers can choose to opt into research conducted by leading experts in sexual health if they want to help push our understanding of sexual health and pleasure even further. Or if they want to keep their data their own, still completely private and encrypted as it is now, they can do that, too. We’re trying to strike the balance and give choices of how people want to use their data and provide opportunities for researchers and our customers to contribute to destigmatizing female sexuality through advancing research in a space that’s been held back for far too long. For some, privacy grants freedom, while for others, sharing in ways like contributing to research grants freedom. We want to give people choice and autonomy to do whatever gives them the space to freely experiment and explore themselves.

Can a Vibrator Change the World?

My wish is that five years down the line, we’ll surpass how much we understand female sexuality (and beyond) compared to the last four decades of stagnation. Best case scenario: We’ll look back and see the year 2018 as the dark ages of female sexuality and pleasure, and realize that our present understanding of sexuality was (is) very narrow and limited. Sexual pleasure could be broadly considered human and part of everyday life, not something that should be devalued, dismissed, censored, or tucked away in the shadows, never to be discussed.

I think it’s possible, but in order to accomplish that we have to take matters into our own hands. Yes, literally. Jokes aside, all of this is to open up sexual experimentation so we can all lead happier, healthier, loving lives.

The world needs a smarter discourse about the female experience, and a smart vibrator might just be the answer. Changing the conversation around female sexuality is going to be hard, but our team is determined to take on the challenge.

It’s often easy to talk about sex and hard to talk about sexuality, especially for women. What we enjoy or not and how it changes over time is a subject of taboo. It’s an awkward topic to bring up with friends and family, and the societal discomfort around female sexuality makes it difficult to find reliable sources of information that we can comfortably and privately consult.

Lioness is trying to change that. We are a women-owned company building a vibrator that transforms the way women understand, discover, and take control of their own bodies. Changing the conversation around female sexuality is hard, but we’re determined to take on the challenge.

Fall In Lust Staff Faves

Fall in Lust with our Staff Faves!

We at the Pleasure Chest are firm believers that your sexiest body part is your mind. So much so that we have been offering free, accessible weekly Pleasure Ed workshops in our major locations since 2009. Our Sex Specialists and sales staff alike go through a thorough training program to better equip you with the knowledge you need to get the products you desire AND give you the proper information on how to use them.

If you can't get your ass to class anytime soon, we've made it easy for you by showcasing some of our favorite perennial products from our Fall in Lust features from PCTV. Hop down this rabbit hole for a quick recap and review of our five featured faves from both our customers and in-house specialists!

Mimi Soft

"What makes the Mimi Soft so unexpected is how different each side of the toy can feel. From the soft tip, to the firm edges to the broad flat of the toy, you can find a perfect mix of pin-point and flatter/broader sensations. This vibe is just a great all-rounder." - Chelsea S.

Tenga Flip Hole Red

"Feels great/ easy to clean. The texture inside this thing is nuts! I like being able to squeeze it for added pressure. I would say the best feature especially if comparing to other sleeves like the Fleshlight is that it opens up, so it's sooooo much easier to clean and dry." - Jeff

Lelo Ina Wave

"Worth. It. I've had maybe 4 vibrators and this one was gifted to me. I would have never paid this price on my own but now that I know the magic I would GLADLY pay $200+. If this thing could take me out to dinner, I would marry it! Do your pu**y a favor and drop the cash. She deserves it!" - Bee

Chakrubs Amethyst Dildo

"Y'all. The Amethyst Chakrub. This crystal energy has got me so right. I have usually relied of curved toys for g-spot stimulation, but the firmness of the chakrub has beat all of those toys out of the park. This chakrub is a toy that allows you (and in a way requires you) to breathe, relax and take your time with your own body. This toy can be whatever you make it, but if you’re willing, it can be a very beautiful and fulfilling tool to self-exploration, self-pleasure and self-love."- Dani

New York Toy Collective Shilo

"I originally bought this because i was curious about a toy that could be a functional pack n play-- something i could wear as a packer during the day, and use for play time when the time arose... It is an amazing stand alone dildo!!! its my personal favorite for topping or bottoming for blowjobs-- its size and flexibility make it more... accommodating. The head makes it great for p-spot and g-spot stimulation as well." - Sydney

So tell us, what's your fave??

Dirty Talk Tips

Dirty Talk Tips

by guest contributor Carly S.

Curious about dirty talk? Here are some dirty talk tips from guest blogger and Sex Specialist Carly S. to make hot sex even hotter!

First things first.

Anyone who tries something new or unfamiliar is nervous, so step one is simple. Relax. You’re doing this for mutual enjoyment, so if you’re not enjoying talking dirty, it might be pointless. Unless you’re into humiliation, then by all means, be uncomfortable!

Also talk about it first, some words can be uncomfortable for people. So let’s say you dive right in, and use a word that is an immediate turn off for your partner you might never want to try dirty talk again. Dirty talk, just like sex itself, is something that needs to be calibrated to the individual that is hearing the dirty talk from their partner. So present the fact that you want to dirty talk into the bedroom and maybe first talk about some off-limits words or phrases. You can also ask what they like their body parts called to get the creative juices flowing. It can give you a great jumping off point, while also being really affirming to whomever you're using your sexiest words with. In general, it’s a much better idea to slowly introduce dirty talk that is not “too extreme” or explicit. Start slowly and build up to the more intense stuff. Everyone is different and has different levels, so talking to your partner first is important.

Keep it simple! Especially when you’re starting out, you don’t have to weave intricate tales of pleasure. Turn directions like, harder/faster/slower/etc. into dirty talk to start out. When you start to feel comfortable, then feel free to push your limits. Just go past it, learn to get lost in it, and don’t judge yourself or withdraw. An unabashed attitude and absence of inhibition will make you one of the best sexual partners ever.

Tease Them!

Before Sex, Say What You Want – During Sex, Say What You Like. A good rule of thumb with dirty talk is to tell your partner what you want to do to them/with them before you’re doing it, and then while you’re doing it, tell them what you’re liking about it. You can also text messages of things you want to do to them to tantalize them before you’re physically together. Saying something along the lines of “I’m trying to get work done but I can’t stop thinking about….” will really have your partner thinking about you all day long.

Be descriptive, use the 5 senses.

Take your dirty talk to the next level by moving on from simple phrases like “Yeah, I like that,” “You look so hot right now” to “I love how you taste” and “you look so hot when you’re doing….”.

One of the easiest and quickest ways to boost the power and erotic, engaging quality of your dirty talk is to start using multi-sensory descriptive words. Most people dirty talk with two of their primary senses: sight and touch. Think about smell, taste, and sound as well.

Dirty Talk: Ground Floor

These are some phrases to get ideas to add to your repertoire of filth.

That feels amazing

Do you like that?

I’m getting so turned on/wet/hard

You look so beautiful/handsome/gorgeous/manly right now

What do you feel like doing to me?

I love how you look at me when you’re turned on

I can’t wait to taste you on my lips

You taste so good

I love what you’re doing to me right now

I’m getting close

A little kinkier

ROLE: You’re the Top

I know you’ve been thinking about doing/fucking/tasting me all day

You’re getting hard thinking about touching/licking/fucking me, aren’t you?

You’re hot, but I’m gonna make you work for this

I know what you want, but I want you to ask/tell/beg me to give it to you

ROLE: You’re the Bottom

I’ve been thinking about you all day

I can’t wait to feel you against/inside me

I love it when you look at me like that

Oh god, I want you/this so bad

I want you to take/fuck/use me like I’m your good girl

Dirty Talk: The Next Level

So you’ve tried all the starter ones and you’re looking for something new that drives your partner crazy. Check out the following, grab a few of your favorite phrases and see how these phrases feel incorporated into your dirty talk.

I love it when I can feel you squeeze around me

Is this yours? Are you going to take it?

You look like a sexy little (fill in the blank) with your lips wrapped around me like this

Tell me how much you love it when I fuck you/when you fuck me

I want you to fuck me in front of the mirror

You have such a perfect ass/cock/pussy/body/etc.

You taste amazing when I’m…

A little kinkier

ROLE: You’re the Top

Tell me how good my (blank) tastes/how wet I am/how hard I’ve made your cock

Keep going, make me come with your mouth/tongue/cock

Look me in the eyes; I’m gonna (fill in blank) so good… but I want you to beg me for it/but if you look away I'll stop

You like it? Tell me how much you love it.

ROLE: You’re the Bottom

I want to/please can I suck your cock?

Oh god, fuck me harder/don’t stop/give me that cock

Fuck me (fill in the blank), use me like your dirty/filthy/good little girl

Practice makes it easier, so start small with simple phrases and work up to the big ones. It might sound silly at first, but it comes easier after awhile. Have fun, and enjoy the journey with each other.

___________________________________________________________________

The Fight Mag September issue

At the Pleasure Chest we often say that your sexiest body part is your mind. It’s even printed on our class flyers every month along with a list of free workshops we offer at four of our five locations in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. You can have all the new toys and goodies in your tool box, but if you don’t know how to use them, chances are you aren’t getting the most out of them.

We didn’t start out selling sex toys though. Fun Fact: Founded in 1971, The Pleasure Chest was originally a waterbed retailer. Waterbeds were crammed into a 47” wide and 12’ long storefront in the West Village, with some mood-lighting and a few cock rings, handcuffs and French ticklers thrown in for inspiration and décor. When it became clear the waterbed sales were sinking and the toys were flying off the shelves, we switched gears and have since grown to become one of the largest retailers of sex toys in the US.

West Village 1972

West Village 2018

At our founding, Pleasure Chest challenged convention by refusing to block out the store windows with XXX, which was standard for sex industry retailers at the time. From the start, our bold embrace of sexuality, particularly alternative sexualities, as a healthy part of life has garnered loyal fans such as Joan Jett, who has been quoted saying she bought her leather ringed belt from the Pleasure Chest’s Los Angeles store in the 70’s, which she later gifted to Sid Vicious.

Joan Jett on Santa Monica Blvd. in 1977. Photo by Brad Elterman.

While the evolution of the sex positive movement and eventual mainstreaming of the embrace of sexuality has taken sex toys out of the shadows, we still aim to create a carefully crafted balance of putting people at ease and pushing some past their comfort zone. Upon entering our stores you may encounter a life-sized, black silicone fist in view of beginner butt plugs barely the size of a finger – the fist suggestively placed as if to say “someday you may be coming back for me.” Our mission to meet every customer wherever they are on their sexual journey is illustrated in our approach to sex education and our commitment to offer the same diversity in our programming as in our product selection and clientele.

photo: LA Weekly

The Pleasure Chest is the only sex industry store to host free weekly sex education workshops nationwide and we firmly believe that everyone has a fundamental right to pursue sexual fulfillment. By offering free pleasure-based education and keeping it accessible and inclusive, we are staying true to our mission: to help you have the best sex of your life. Since we launched our Pleasure Ed program in 2009, we have presented classes every week ranging from Butt Sex Basics, Blowjobs & Beyond, and Advanced Anal, to Japanese Rope Bondage, Talk Dirty to Me, and Queering Your Sex which have been attended by tens of thousands of participants.

As the sexual landscape evolves and sex toys start popping up on every lifestyle blog and pharmacy website, one thing will remain true as it has for nearly five decades; Pleasure Chest will continue to embrace sexuality in all its forms and will never stop spreading the pleasure gospel.

Butt Toy Basics

Butt Toy Basics

Every year at the Pleasure Chest, we celebrate #AnalAugust. It’s a great opportunity for us to educate and celebrate the often misunderstood backdoor and all of it’s wonderful pleasure opportunities. When people think of “anal sex” they often assume it to mean penetration with a penis or dildo. We like to define sex much more broadly to cover any kinds of stimulation that create pleasure. Although some people may work up to and find great pleasure from being penetrated anally with a penis or a larger toy, there’s also a wide array of toys for the rest of us who aren’t quite there yet.

Butt are you ready??

We’ve assembled this handy how-to for anyone looking for an anal toy. Remember, this orifice is pretty picky about who and what gets inside it, so relax and choose wisely.

Where to start?

A long-lasting lubricant is the first purchase anyone looking to explore backdoor play should make. Why? Because the ass does not self lubricate. Let’s say it together – THE ASS DOES NOT SELF LUBRICATE! There is a mucus membrane in the rectum that provides some very light lubrication at first but with friction or movement it wears off and lube is essential for a pleasurable anal play experience. When picking a lubricant for your ass, make sure to get something that will not absorb into the skin too quickly. The best options are silicone lubricants that do not absorb into the skin at all. A Pleasure Chest fave is Uberlube because it does not have unnecessary ingredients or byproducts added to it and it comes in a classy glass bottle. Thick water-based lubes, like Sliquid Sea are also great because they last longer than thinner formulas. Some folks even love oil-based lubricants for anal play because they also last a long time.

Need more info on lube for anal sex? Read more here!

Choose the right lube!

What exactly can I put in my ass?

There are a few different types of anal toys. The most important rule of butt toys is to never put anything in your ass that doesn't have a flared base! Like we say: without a base, without a trace! The suction that is created by the contraction and release of the sphincter muscles can pull something without a base into your rectum. Please trust us. We don’t want anyone stuck at the ER trying to explain how they "accidentally" slipped and fell ass-first onto a cucumber.

HERE'S A BRIGHT IDEA: DO'T DO THIS.

Why use a butt toy?

The highest concentration of nerve endings in the ass is right around the anus and just inside. Toys can feel amazing on those oft-neglected nerve endings around and inside the asshole. Stimulation brings blood to the area, which makes for a healthier hole. In fact, prostate massage is pleasurable and beneficial to physical health because it helps maintain the elasticity of the tissue. Plugs and beads are great preparation for anal sex with a penis or dildo. And, last but not least, the anus is our equal-opportunity orifice in that everyone has one, and inside all of us is the potential to enjoy ass play.

How do I use an anal toy?

You can use anal toys solo, during intercourse, during oral sex, as prep for anal penetration or wear a butt plug to your ceramics class at the learning annex. It’s kind of your call. Never rush your partner or yourself, and don’t go jamming things inside you without any lube or warming up (you know, with backdoor foreplay like rimming, or gently inserting a finger).

Butt plugs are a great place to start. Plugs are designed to be worn in the ass for a period of time, giving it a sense of fullness. They come in a variety of shapes, but the main things to look for are a tapered bottom to help it stay in and a flared base. Even better, look for a base that is designed to be hugged perfectly by your cheeks, like the silicone Fun Factory Bootie, Njoy Pure Plugs, or the Tantus Perfect Plug. The really fun thing about plugs is that they can be worn during sex or other kinds of play to increase sensation and orgasmic response (or during that boring budgeting meeting to add a little spice to your day)!

Plug life.

Anal beads please on the way in and delight on the way out. Use them for an anal sex warm-up, getting accustomed to the feeling of in and out penetration, or to enhance your climax during intercourse or oral. We don’t recommend anal beads with string because the fabric can cause small tears that can lead to irritation and increased risk of infection. Anal beads come in all sizes, from small for beginners, like Fun Factory Flexi Felix, to extra large, like Tantus Cowboy. Some even have graduated sized beads to work your way up, like the Tantus Ripple. The main attraction to anal beads is the feeling, texture, and anticipation of each bead upon insertion or removal. Some people like to have sex with anal beads inserted and pull them out at orgasm for extra sensation. This is fine, in theory, but don’t pull on it like you’re starting a lawn mower. The rectum will not be pleased.

The need for beads.

Any dildo with a flared base is also great for anal play because you can customize the size, but we super-highly recommend non-porous materials, like silicone and stainless steel. You can utilize dildos in a strap-on for an added dynamic in your play. A good place to start for anal dildos is the Vixen Vibrating Mistress because of its slim shape, ideal length, and silicone material. If you're curious about pegging (bending your partner over and fucking them in the ass) but aren't sure where to start, the Tantus Bend Over Beginner Kit has everything you need. Or, you can explore temperature play with the handheld Njoy Fun Wand, which is curved on one end for G or P-spot play and features graduated bulbs on the other for a unique anal experience.

The Real Dil!

Vibrating anal toys may sound like the best thing ever, but with butt toys it can be more about the material, texture and shape for good stimulation of the prostate or anal nerve endings. The good news is that quality toys made of non-porous materials, like Tantus Pro-Touch are just as good with the vibrations off and can be safely sanitized for vaginal use as well. B-Vibe’s Rimming Petite Plug also creates a unique experience with rotating beads located in the flange of the toy, which maximizes the sensation at the center of the nerve endings.

Fun vibes.

Prostate toys are anal plugs, dildos, or vibrators that are curved to stimulate the prostate, like the Aneros Helix Syn, a consistent bestseller. Prostate massage can create an intense all over orgasm and now that prostate play is becoming more popular, there are many great vibrators designed to stimulate the P-spot, like the Lelo Loki Wave. Fun fact - any toy designed for prostate play can also be used on the G-spot (just be mindful of cleaning rules if you plan to use your toy for both)!

Prostate pleasure.

What about cleanliness?

Because our butts can harbor bacteria, we recommend using non-porous toys in your butt, like those made of silicone, stainless steel, or glass. It can also help with peace of mind to have a light cleaning routine as part of your anal play, which can be something as simple as lathering your finger up with body safe soap and cleaning around the anus or using a douche, like the Cal Exotics Ultimate Cleansing Douche, filled with warm water to clean more deeply in the rectum. Or better yet, try TUSHY’s easy to use bidet system whenever your ass needs a freshening up!

HELLO TUSHY! Keep it clean.

When sharing toys between partners or from ass to vagina, use a fresh condom for each partner or before each use. Once porous toys (like most soft rubber and non-medical grade plastics) are used as butt toys, they need to stay butt toys forever, unless you’re using a condom. Non-porous toys should be washed thoroughly before and after each use, when switching from ass to vag, and before each use between non-fluid bonded partners.

Any parting words?

As in cheek parting? Well, the most important thing to mind when engaging in ass play is comfort, communication, and safety. If those factors are there, then pleasure isn’t far behind!

Happy Anal August from Pleasure Chest!

Top Toys for Prostate Massage

Prostate Massage MVP's

by guest contributor Aneros

We are so excited to have our friends at Aneros Prostate Massage toys contributing a few blogs for Anal August. Last week we covered the The Pleasure of the Prostate and Prostate Massage and Health. This week, we dive into the bevy of benefits and the wide range of prostate massagers on the market. Here are the MVP's...

While many anal enthusiasts these days have an awareness of prostate massage and P-spot play, this was not always the case. In reality, it was the development of the Aneros in the 90’s that launched the world’s first hands-free prostate massager that originally introduced the concept of self -administered prostate massage for health and wellness. And it was the re-launching of the device in 2001, as a pleasure product that essentially created the market for Male-G Spot stimulators that we know today.

While the idea of a one-size-fits-all approach was attractive, as time went on it became clear that Aneros users had preferences, in size, shape and materials that required the introduction of new and different models. What follows is a brief outline of the most popular Aneros prostate massagers.

The MGX Trident

The MGX Trident is the newest interpretation of the MGX Classic, the model that started it all. As with the entire Trident series, the MGX features MAMA™ architecture, a unique balancing method that allows for total freedom of movement (up/down, in/out and side to side) and an extra arm for added external stimulation. All of the Tridents are composed of rigid, non-porous body safe material. The MGX Trident combines equal degrees of prostate stimulation and mobility with the added feature of a ribbed stem to enhance sensations in the anal canal. Good for beginning and advanced users.

The Helix Trident

The Helix Trident features a more angled and slightly larger head for more focused massage with a tapered midsection for greater responsiveness. The Trident configured "W" arms provide a cradling effect for responsive pivoting and delightful external stimulation. A thing of beauty, with a contoured body and newly configured arms, the Trident Helix is great for both beginning and advanced users.

The Maximus Trident

The Maximus Trident was designed for men who prefer fuller sensations in the anal canal during prostate stimulation. It features a rounder, wider head that produces expanded, yet slightly less focused stimulation of the prostate. For intermediate to advanced users.

The Eupho Trident

The Eupho Trident has a slim body and specially contoured curves for the utmost control and mobility. The new MAMA™ balancing makes the Eupho Trident the most responsive model in the Aneros product line. Originally designed for the experienced solo user, it is an excellent choice during intercourse. The smaller profile moves freely with thrusting, providing gentle but tantalizing stimulation for stronger and longer orgasms.

The Helix Syn

The synthesis between our Helix Classic shape and the luxurious performance of highest quality silicone, the Helix Syn, is our most popular model. With its solid inner frame, the Syn maintains the rigidity necessary for focused and assertive prostate stimulation. The final touch of a velvet touch silicone coating provides extreme comfort and maximum pleasure. Excellent for users of all levels or experience.

The Eupho Syn

The award-winning Eupho Syn combines the unique qualities of the Eupho shape with a layer of high quality silicone for a sublime feel. The Eupho Syn is terrific for couples interested in longer, more explosive sex. For experienced solo users, it’s like a high performance sports car delivering greater joys with experience and handling. Due to its size, contour and balance, it is extremely responsive, and thanks to an outer skin of velvet touch silicone…very comfortable to use.

The Progasm Ice

The Progasm was designed for men who have experience with prostate and/or anal play. Large in size, yet surprisingly agile, the Progasm produces fullness with focus for the most intense stimulation in the Aneros product line. It also boasts a spherical tab called the Kundalini, or "K Tab," adding sensations in the lower back that complement prostate stimulation. The Progasm is composed of a rigid, non-porous, body-safe polycarbonate material and comes in 3 colors: Progasm Classic (matte white), Progasm Ice (transparent glass-like finish) and Black Ice (high-gloss black finish).

Progasm Jr.

The Progasm Jr. incorporates the same design elements of the Progasm into a more compact package, making it ideal for users of all experience levels. In performance it is comparable to the Helix Trident, producing a focused massage with excellent responsiveness. The Jr. is a great choice for men who enjoy the Progasm but favor more movement, or for those who need less fullness. Winner of a number several sexual health and wellness awards, the Progasm Jr. is available in Black Ice (high-gloss black finish).

The VICE

The Vice is similar in size, shape and performance to the Progasm with several exciting differences. It is formed from a high quality velvet touch silicone providing a comfortable and easy-to-clean experience. It comes with our unique Stainless Steel vibrator, custom designed to enhance prostate stimulation and maximize orgasms. With the vibrator removed, the Vice becomes a very flexible device, terrific for sitting and grinding on. Like the Progasm, the Vice is designed for men who have experience with prostate and/or anal play.
