Pelvic floor exercise has been noted to date back to ancient Greek and Roman times. Its popularity was picked up again and published about in 1936 by a physical therapist named Margaret Morris. Nevertheless, pelvic floor exercise didn't achieve broader recognition until the mid-1940’s, when Dr. Arnold Kegel was credited for developing an exercise to help women who were experiencing bladder control issues. Pelvic floor exercise, (like prostate massage) has a history that extends back millennia ago to the teachings of Taoism in China and Tantra in India.   There was even mention of it in the writings of Hippocrates in ancient Greece and Galen in Roman times.  But from there the practice fell into relative obscurity until 1936 when a British physical therapist, Margaret Morris, published “Maternity and Post-Operative Exercises” that included illustrations of pelvic floor muscle exercise.  However, it wasn’t until 1948 and series of articles published by gynecologist Dr. Arnold Kegel when the importance of the practice finally gained the prominence it deserved.  Kegel’s work involved  the idea of achieving “pelvic fitness” through exercise, with much of his focus dedicated to treating urinary incontinence in women following child birth.  In the decades since, Kegel’s name has become synonymous with pelvic floor exercise and other benefits have come to light including:

• Improved pelvic circulation
• Increased vaginal muscle tone and lubrication
• Increased arousal and stronger orgasms
• Vaginal muscle relaxation, for women who experience pain during penetration
• Greater control of the vaginal muscles for more sensation for both partners.

Ironically, the typical Kegel instructions we see so often today; hold pelvic floor muscles tight for an 8 count, relax for a 10 count,… bear little resemblance to Kegel’s original regimen which stressed  4 factors;  muscle education, feedback,  progressive intensity and resistance.

This last factor is something conspicuously absent in the more casual Kegel programs.  The need for resistance (something to contract against) not only promotes muscle growth but also provides a feedback element as well.  Kegel originally used a perineometer, a medical device of his own design for resistance and feedback.  In recent years, there are great number of Kegel training products that have been introduced, with most being some variation of ben wa balls.

The politics of kink, and the interplay of our personal identities and sexualities is a personal dialogue Mistress Mary and I have been having as sex educators for years.  Over the last year, themes and questions that came up more and more in our conversations centered on power and privilege.  Are we still feeling empowered by the fantasies that excited our younger selves? When does it feel good to lean into versus subvert traditional power dynamics in play?  How do you know if you’ve tapped into your authentic erotic voice or if you’re driven by your partners’ fantasy or society’s/culture’s idea of how someone in your identity “should” be sexy?  These conversations have been a great reminder for me that our sexuality and desires are constantly evolving and that, like all things, our sexual journey is a process that does not have an end point. Rather, our sexual selves have to change and grow in order to thrive.  It is from these conversations that our 3 part workshop From Negotiation to Impact: Creating Meaningful D/s Dynamics was born!

One's sexual journey is a process.

The goal of this series is to help those with little to no kink experience be able to identify their fantasies, negotiate them with a partner, and gain the hands-on skills needed to confidently explore power dynamics and kink scenes.  For more advanced players, the series aims to help participants evaluate the roles they embody in their play, how their personal identities inform their sexual identities, and to dive deeply into the root of fantasies to better understand them, get kinkier with them, and create more nuanced dynamics with play partners.

The starting point of the series, and a great starting point for crafting any meaningful D/s dynamic, is to do some self-reflection.  A great question to ask yourself is “How do I want to embody my Dominance or my submission?”

IDENTIFYING YOUR PERSONAL DOM/sub STYLE

Mistress Mary’s signature exercise for thinking about how to embody a Dominant or submissive stance that is authentic to you is to think about your Dom/sub icon.  For instance, as a Dom are you more of a Grace Jones or a Beyoncé?  Ripley from Aliens, or Tyler Durden from Fight Club?  As a sub, are you more of a Marilyn Monroe or a Gomez Addams?  Magic Mike, or Harlequin?  There are so many great icons you can think up!

What kind of Dom are you?

This method of reflecting on and embodying your Dominant or submissive energy is more nuanced than thinking about energy exchange within a defined role like teacher/student, or daddy/little girl or boi.  For instance, a Grace Jones Dom may source their power through gender exploration, performativity, costumery, and use their physicality to keep their submissive on their toes, slightly intimidated and overpowered.  A Beyoncé Dom, on the other hand, may use similar building blocks to a different effect.  A Beyoncé Dom earns your total worship and wields their femininity, voice, costumery, and physical presence to gain your affection, amazement, and awe.  Similarly, a Marilyn Monroe style sub may play up their sensuality, naughty sweetness, and coyly seek attention as their means of showing devotion.  Meanwhile, a Gomez Addams sub also wants to show their devotion, but would likely dote on their Dom, eagerly accept any and all service duties and heap on praise in order to show how devoted they are.

What kind of sub are you?

When you break down the energy you want to give and receive in your play in this way, it can help you not only find your authentic, kinky self, but also identify the kinds of partners you should play with. If I were a kinky matchmaker, I would love to pair a Gomez Addams sub with a Beyoncé Dom to receive the kind of worship they truly deserve!

YOUR KINKY TOOLBOX

Tools of the trade. Rope, slapper, cuffs and collars, check!

In addition to thinking about how you like to give and receive energy and power in your play, it can also be helpful to develop a toolbox that supports you.  Think about what you have to work with as a Dom/sub – your body, how you carry yourself, your voice, the language you use, your clothing, props, etc.  Do you dominate by barking commands sternly and often or do you use your words sparingly and only whisper your orders when you do?  Perhaps your subs are not worth the breath it takes to utter a command and instead you point and direct with your finger or crop and roll your eyes in disappointment regularly because of the inherent inferior nature of your playmates.  Do you wear heals or boots to stomp around (or on) your subs?  Are there articles of clothing that help with your posture? Perhaps you wear sexy undergarments that only get revealed if your submissive is really well-behaved.

What is your Dom style?

As a sub, do you find that being on the floor or on your knees helps you get into sub space?  In that case, let your play partner know that you need to start all scenes there!  Does it help you to feel submissive if you keep your eyes down?  Do you speak in a meek voice and stutter on your words or are you bratty, defiant and mock your Dom every time they speak?  Do you wear a collar to symbolize your submission, a buttoned up ensemble with glasses, or nothing at all?  Identifying a Dom/sub style or icon that you want to emulate AND finding all the tools that will help you to embody and explore that energy stance can help you break out of stale dynamics in your play.

What is your sub style?

Here is a great exercise is to describe your Dom/sub style.  Start with a few adjectives, then identify what clothing, body language, ways of speaking, words to use, and actions you can take that will make you feel your most Dominant or submissive. Once you have some ideas, try writing a paragraph describing your Dom/sub self.  As an example:

“I am a Dominant who is assertive, seductive, and wants to be worshipped.  I wear heels, and red lipstick to feel sexy.  I like to stand tall and look down at my subs while holding a crop. I like to give rewards for good behavior, such as the opportunity to touch me. I give orders softly and inflict pain sparingly. I plan out my scenes carefully and with great detail. I excite my subs with slow pacing and sporadic peaks of intensity.”

Write it down. Work it out. VISUALIZE.

Once you have the building blocks in place for asserting your Dominance or giving your submission in play, you’re able to enter into more meaningful negotiations with play partners and engage in nuanced scene exploration!

A lot has changed since the 1980s, but research on female sexuality hasn’t advanced much since then. It’s not for a lack of interest—global taboos, personal discomfort, and lack of funding have held us back, and it doesn’t look like things are going to get much better on their own…

Sex (Research) Doesn’t Pay

In a recent New York Times article, author Hallie Lieberman took a deep dive into the history — past and present — of the Kinsey Institute, a leading sex research institute in the United States founded by Alfred Kinsey in the mid-20th century.

She didn’t have a great prognosis for the future of sexual pleasure, nor did the current director of the Kinsey Institute:

“Kinsey has to have some kinds of priorities to survive in the future. We cannot focus simply on things like sexual pleasure. We can’t because there’s no funding for it.”

There are a few reasons that Lieberman covers, but one of the most worrying ones is that in December 2016, the Kinsey Institute moved from being an independent nonprofit organization with an independent board of directors to merging with Indiana University and only answering to the university’s administration.

Needless to say, Indiana University (and especially current governor Eric Holcomb) are not fans of the Kinsey Institute.

Knowledge is Power

What happens in research doesn’t exist in a bubble. It affects all of us. That’s why the kind of work that we’re doing at Lioness is especially important right now. Sexual pleasure is more than sex. Sexual pleasure is essential to everyone’s lives. There’s so much more to learn and we’ve barely gotten started. It affects our self-confidence, our relationships, our intimacy, and even our health. The lack of information available affects our ability to talk about sex and sexuality, especially for women.

What we enjoy and how it changes over time is a subject of taboo. It’s an awkward topic to bring up with friends and family, and the societal discomfort around female sexuality makes it difficult to find reliable sources of information that we can comfortably and privately consult. Like other aspects of our health, there’s no one-size-fits-all guide. Sometimes your health changes and you have to relearn your own body to live a better, happier life.

My Journey

The topic of pleasure and the effects of its accompanying taboos were clear to me even before I (Liz) started my sexual wellness company, Lioness. Before developing Lioness, a vibrator and tool for sexual self-experimentation, I was in and around the sexuality space for nearly a decade — first as an artist, then as a sales person and educator. I first noticed something was amiss about our societal understanding of sexuality when, as part of an art show, I created a giant photograph of a vagina and some people couldn’t recognize what it was, even if it was right in front of them staring them in the face. There were even women, young and old, who couldn’t recognize a body part they‘ve also had for their entire lives. I was shocked by the number of people who thought my photograph was of “two figures dancing”. Representatives of my alma mater tried—actually, demanded—to purchase the piece over everything else in my art collection until they were told what it really was…

When I sold intimacy products to women, I ended up talking to hundreds of women from all walks of life about everything from simple questions to their deepest-held secrets. I discovered that we all have questions but few places to get real guidance or answers, and again, everyone is different so no solution or method of learning suits everybody.

Knowledge to the People

I started Lioness as a step toward helping women discover their own answers. We are a team of designers and engineers building a vibrator that helps you understand, discover, and take control of your own body. It’s paired with an app that allows you to easily visualize what your body is telling you and ask questions to a supportive community. Using advanced biometric sensing and statistical methods, we help you characterize your sexuality — how fast you get aroused, how long it generally takes to orgasm, and when sex would feel best — both individually and within the diverse sexual spectrum of the aggregate female population. All designed and packaged into an elegant consumer product you can use in the comfort of your own home.

You can use it with the Lioness app like a sex diary to get a better sense of what works over time, to self-experiment, and as a means for opening up the conversation about pleasure with your partner or yourself. The Lioness creates words for pleasure that did not exist before, because the information simply did not exist.

Partnering with Research

We’ve already started to see the nuances of female pleasure, both individually and on a societal level over time. While the data has been anonymized and encrypted since the beginning, soon Lioness customers can choose to opt into research conducted by leading experts in sexual health if they want to help push our understanding of sexual health and pleasure even further. Or if they want to keep their data their own, still completely private and encrypted as it is now, they can do that, too. We’re trying to strike the balance and give choices of how people want to use their data and provide opportunities for researchers and our customers to contribute to destigmatizing female sexuality through advancing research in a space that’s been held back for far too long. For some, privacy grants freedom, while for others, sharing in ways like contributing to research grants freedom. We want to give people choice and autonomy to do whatever gives them the space to freely experiment and explore themselves.

Can a Vibrator Change the World?

My wish is that five years down the line, we’ll surpass how much we understand female sexuality (and beyond) compared to the last four decades of stagnation. Best case scenario: We’ll look back and see the year 2018 as the dark ages of female sexuality and pleasure, and realize that our present understanding of sexuality was (is) very narrow and limited. Sexual pleasure could be broadly considered human and part of everyday life, not something that should be devalued, dismissed, censored, or tucked away in the shadows, never to be discussed.

I think it’s possible, but in order to accomplish that we have to take matters into our own hands. Yes, literally. Jokes aside, all of this is to open up sexual experimentation so we can all lead happier, healthier, loving lives.

The world needs a smarter discourse about the female experience, and a smart vibrator might just be the answer. Changing the conversation around female sexuality is going to be hard, but our team is determined to take on the challenge.

First things first.

Anyone who tries something new or unfamiliar is nervous, so step one is simple. Relax. You’re doing this for mutual enjoyment, so if you’re not enjoying talking dirty, it might be pointless. Unless you’re into humiliation, then by all means, be uncomfortable!

It can give you a great jumping off point, while also being really affirming to whomever you're using your sexiest words with. In general, it’s a much better idea to slowly introduce dirty talk that is not “too extreme” or explicit. Start slowly and build up to the more intense stuff. Everyone is different and has different levels, so talking to your partner first is important.

Keep it simple! Especially when you’re starting out, you don’t have to weave intricate tales of pleasure. Turn directions like, harder/faster/slower/etc. into dirty talk to start out. The Fight Mag September issue

At the Pleasure Chest we often say that your sexiest body part is your mind. It’s even printed on our class flyers every month along with a list of free workshops we offer at four of our five locations in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. We didn’t start out selling sex toys though. Fun Fact: Founded in 1971, The Pleasure Chest was originally a waterbed retailer. Waterbeds were crammed into a 47” wide and 12’ long storefront in the West Village, with some mood-lighting and a few cock rings, handcuffs and French ticklers thrown in for inspiration and décor. Every year at the Pleasure Chest, we celebrate #AnalAugust.  It’s a great opportunity for us to educate and celebrate the often misunderstood backdoor and all of it’s wonderful pleasure opportunities.  When people think of “anal sex” they often assume it to mean penetration with a penis or dildo.  We like to define sex much more broadly to cover any kinds of stimulation that create pleasure.  Although some people may work up to and find great pleasure from being penetrated anally with a penis or a larger toy, there’s also a wide array of toys for the rest of us who aren’t quite there yet.

We’ve assembled this handy how-to for anyone looking for an anal toy. Remember, this orifice is pretty picky about who and what gets inside it, so relax and choose wisely.

Where to start?

A long-lasting lubricant is the first purchase anyone looking to explore backdoor play should make.  Why?  Because the ass does not self lubricate.  Let’s say it together – THE ASS DOES NOT SELF LUBRICATE! There is a mucus membrane in the rectum that provides some very light lubrication at first but with friction or movement it wears off and lube is essential for a pleasurable anal play experience.  When picking a lubricant for your ass, make sure to get something that will not absorb into the skin too quickly. The best options are silicone lubricants that do not absorb into the skin at all.  A Pleasure Chest fave is Uberlube because it does not have unnecessary ingredients or byproducts added to it and it comes in a classy glass bottle.  Thick water-based lubes, like Sliquid Sea are also great because they last longer than thinner formulas. Some folks even love oil-based lubricants for anal play because they also last a long time.

What exactly can I put in my ass?

There are a few different types of anal toys. The most important rule of butt toys is to never put anything in your ass that doesn't have a flared base! Like we say: without a base, without a trace!  The suction that is created by the contraction and release of the sphincter muscles can pull something without a base into your rectum.  Please trust us.  We don’t want anyone stuck at the ER trying to explain how they "accidentally" slipped and fell ass-first onto a cucumber.

HERE'S A BRIGHT IDEA: DO'T DO THIS.

Why use a butt toy?

The highest concentration of nerve endings in the ass is right around the anus and just inside.  Toys can feel amazing on those oft-neglected nerve endings around and inside the asshole. Stimulation brings blood to the area, which makes for a healthier hole. In fact, prostate massage is pleasurable and beneficial to physical health because it helps maintain the elasticity of the tissue. Plugs and beads are great preparation for anal sex with a penis or dildo. And, last but not least, the anus is our equal-opportunity orifice in that everyone has one, and inside all of us is the potential to enjoy ass play.

How do I use an anal toy?

You can use anal toys solo, during intercourse, during oral sex, as prep for anal penetration or wear a butt plug to your ceramics class at the learning annex. It’s kind of your call.  Never rush your partner or yourself, and don’t go jamming things inside you without any lube or warming up  (you know, with backdoor foreplay like rimming, or gently inserting a finger).

Butt plugs are a great place to start.  Plugs are designed to be worn in the ass for a period of time, giving it a sense of fullness. They come in a variety of shapes, but the main things to look for are a tapered bottom to help it stay in and a flared base. Even better, look for a base that is designed to be hugged perfectly by your cheeks, like the silicone Fun Factory Bootie, Njoy Pure Plugs, or the Tantus Perfect Plug. The really fun thing about plugs is that they can be worn during sex or other kinds of play to increase sensation and orgasmic response (or during that boring budgeting meeting to add a little spice to your day)!

Anal beads please on the way in and delight on the way out. Use them for an anal sex warm-up, getting accustomed to the feeling of in and out penetration, or to enhance your climax during intercourse or oral. We don’t recommend anal beads with string because the fabric can cause small tears that can lead to irritation and increased risk of infection. Anal beads come in all sizes, from small for beginners, like Fun Factory Flexi Felix, to extra large, like Tantus Cowboy. Some even have graduated sized beads to work your way up, like the Tantus Ripple. The main attraction to anal beads is the feeling, texture, and anticipation of each bead upon insertion or removal. Some people like to have sex with anal beads inserted and pull them out at orgasm for extra sensation. This is fine, in theory, but don’t pull on it like you’re starting a lawn mower. The rectum will not be pleased.

Any dildo with a flared base is also great for anal play because you can customize the size, but we super-highly recommend non-porous materials, like silicone and stainless steel.
