Tonight, Bliss & Paying What You Want

Let's skip the details, conversations, stats crunching, shady backroom deals, and dramatic hostage rescues that have gone into the decision and just leave you with the decision:

As of today, the download of Tonight is going back to name-your-own-price, including free. And just as good as that? So is Bliss!

Both albums will remain on the other online stores like iTunes and Amazon MP3 for whatever they're charging for it. But if you get it through music.the-positions.com, you can pay whatever you like.

One thing, though: if you download it for free, you can pay us back by telling your friends on Twitter or Facebook or your entire email address book or your Furries Anonymous "support group". It's a tiny, quick gesture, but it makes a big difference.

Feels like a holiday today, doesn't it? You're feeling that holiday tingle because you know that our new album Tonight has hit the stores. That's right: it's officially out today, so if you didn't get the chance to download it for free, you can go get it at iTunes, Amazon mp3 or Bandcamp.

But even if you can already have it, you can still help us out. Rate and/or review the album on iTunes or Amazon, share the album page with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or by email, and click the Facebook "recommend" button below the album cover on the home page if you haven't already. Click it, you fool! There's not much time!

Finally, we would be remiss to not give every thanks we can scrounge up for the people who chose to give us a little of their hard-earned money instead of downloading the album for free. We got nothin' but hearts for you, baby.

Our new six-song album is now available on Bandcamp to download, and you can name your own price, including the price of zero. That is, you can download it for FREE. Those all-caps don't lie.

Why are we giving it away? Simple: because more than anything else, we want our friends, family and those of you who already knew about us before Tonight's official release date to have it and listen to it however you want. Period.

The free download will end on June 29th, which is the day the album will hit the digital stores like iTunes and Amazon. So grab it before then and tell everyone you know.

Two things: one is that you'll notice when you name zero as your price, it'll ask you for your email address. We will only email you twice at that address: to let you know when the album is available in the digital stores, and once more when the album is released on vinyl.

Second, you may wonder why we even bother allowing you to name more than zero. Also simple: because we spent a lot of money recording this and while we don't expect to make that back, we like supporting the bands that we love by buying their stuff, and so if you do too, then you can throw in three bucks or five or whatever you'd like to tip us with.

But again, we would much rather that you have it than anything else, so if you don't want to drag your credit card out or just don't feel like paying, then grab it for free and don't think twice about it.

Most of all: enjoy it. And spread the word!

While we're lucky enough to have the love, support, promotional skillz and knowledge of yesboyicecream records to push the vinyl release of Tonight, but we decided to do a lot of the promotion ourselves with the tools that the information age has provided us.

And that's where you come in: there are LOTS of very little things that you can do to help Tonight get to a wider audience.

If you like Tonight, don't just appreciate it quietly in your headphones: let people know that you like it!

The easiest way to share is to just email your music-loving friends, especially if those friends have wildly popular music blogs or work for internationally known music magazines. But even just those people you think would like it would appreciate knowing about it. But there's other easy ways too:

If you're on Facebook, let your friends know. You can share the Tonight page (look for the Facebook icon below the album cover). Click 'Like' at the top of our Facebook page if you haven't already, and then share the bigger announcements from us (click the 'share' button at the bottom of the post when it appears on your wall). And click the 'Like' button below the album cover on this page if you haven't already.

If you're on Twitter, follow us and retweet the big announcement tweets. Or just retweet this one.

If you're on last.fm, you can post something in the shoutbox on our page or on the Tonight album page, and love one or all of the tracks, but mostly, if you're sending your listens to last.fm (aka "scrobbling"), you can just listen to Tonight a lot.

If you're on Google Reader or Buzz, share the Tonight page. Look for the Google Reader/Buzz icon below the album cover. And include a note so people know that it's not just some random share.

If you have a blog, you can REALLY help. Post something about the album, and link back to our site. Release dates!

After months of emails across DC and the Atlantic, we finally have some solid dates to give you for the release of our new album Tonight.

On Tuesday, June 29th, Tonight will be released to the online digital stores. This includes Amazon mp3, eMusic, Amie Street and a bunch of nationalities of iTunes.

On Sunday, July 4th, the album will be released on vinyl by yesboyicecream records. VINYL. So exciting.

But...before all of that, on the first of June, we'll have a special release date for our friends, family and fans. So check back in a week!

The new site is live! Which, if you're on the site, you can see. We wanted to go for something nice and simple and put our two albums right up front and center. Also, with personalities being scattered all over your Facebooks and Twitters the way they are nowadays, we knew that having a simple site was all we needed. God...remember in the early 2000s when every band website had to be some complicated Flash crap and you had to practically solve a puzzle just to listen to their music? Those days were the worst, man.

There's still some work to be done here, so you may find some 't's uncrossed or some 'i's undotted, but it will all be taken care of soon enough.

Big news coming on June first, though. BIG news. Stay tuned.

Less orange, but more music

Take a look at the bright orange (or "Positions Orange" as you'll find it at most paint stores) of the current website and take a look at the uptown font that adorns it, because it's going away in a short time. Yes, we're gearing up for the release of our new album Tonight with a new, simplified, clarified, less-orange website that's coming your way in a few days.

Oh, right. One other thing. You can listen to Tonight in full now over at Bandcamp. And stay tuned here for release dates and other news that you'll want to have a change of pants for. You heard right.

We're in the final few laps of the marathon of putting out our new release. Trevor Kampmann is mixing it with a fantastic warm, live sound.

We'll be releasing the album ourselves digitally, and our friend Emmit at yesboyicecream records in Ireland is scheduled to put out the record on vinyl. Us! The Positions! On vinyl!

Just to get you warmed up for the pestering: since we'll be releasing it digitally ourselves, we'll be looking to our friends and fans to help us out getting the word out, so we'll be hitting you up for whatever tweets, shares and posts you can possibly provide. DJ nights are over for a while and so are the shows, but we're still here and around, tweaking horns and mixing and writing and dreaming of artwork. "It was that green and crazy summer..."

As a reminder/tip, we're available for your streaming pleasure* on places like Lala and Rhapsody. In this mad world where the internet has firm hold of the wheel, you don't even have to buy stuff anymore. You just listen to it right there on the web, in your underwear in your own home, as was intended from the beginning of time and music.

New-record planning is getting into high gear. We're finishing up the recording part of the six songs and will soon be starting the mixing and mastering part and the more fun stuff of artwork, running order and title.

In the meantime, you can still get our first record Bliss! on all the major online stores, including Amie Street, where their variable pricing means you can still get high quality, DRM-free mp3s for (as of this writing) the steal price of $1.80, or only 15 cents a song. The more people buy, the higher the price goes, so if you want it at that price, go on and get it.

If you're still feeling flush with the sensation of being thoroughly and almost invasively rocked, then you came to our show last Saturday and enjoyed it as much as we did. The Subjects were as good a band as we could imagine sharing a stage with, and the dance party afterwards was icing on the cake, except that Saturday night was even better than cake.

We don't have any shows lined up, but we'll be finishing our new music, and don't forget that Bliss! is all nice and easy to get now, so go grab it from one of the stores if you don't already have it.

We have a show.

We're playing this Saturday night (aka THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!!!1!) at DC9 with The Subjects. As if that weren't enough to make you start speaking in tongues with excitement, Ivan and Reid will be jumping from guitar and drums to laptops where they'll serve up some fierce dance tune DJing for us all to dance until we pass out. Or 3 AM. Whichever comes first.

If you're really on a budget, head over to Amie Street where it's currently selling for the cheapest. All the stores that are selling it can be gotten to under the Buy section just above in the Discography.

Meanwhile, we're finishing up the six songs that we've been recording at Inner Ear studio, which we have our fingers crossed to have out this summer.

This Friday night from 9:30 PM to 2:30 AM, Ivan and Reid will be DJing at the Rock and Roll Hotel, playing decidedly non-Positions tunes to people who are interested in things like dancing and fun. There'll be disco both new and old, some 80's classics, some current favorites, and when the alcohol is flowing steadily, some cheesy pop. It'll be fun, we swear. You know what else it'll be? Free. It's been a while, but we've been here. There haven't been many shows, but there's two main things that have been keeping us busy. First, we've been recording: six songs being laid down at Inner Ear Studio in Arlington, VA. Now, we know enough not to give any set date, but we have our fingers crossed for a release sometime this spring.

The second bit that's been keeping us busy is getting Bliss! on the digital music stores. Links to the various stores will be posted on the home page as the digitial goodness shows up on each of the stores.

Finally, we've been working on a new home page for our site. Nothing exciting. In fact, it's a lot more scaled down. We're going to be putting most everything on the home page, both for your convenience and ours.

It's official: our first album has a second release date. Bliss! will be available in the UK and Ireland on 11th September. Did you notice how we said "11th September" instead of "September 11th"? That's how they do it over there, we're told, and we don't want anyone getting confused.

If you've found yourself in Ireland for whatever reason (maybe you live there) in the past few weeks, and you happen to turn on the radio for some reason, you may have been lucky enough to hear The Positions on Irish radio. We've apparently made the radio over there, and have made such an impression that Today FM, in a fit of excitement, called us one of "the best new Irish artists", in spite of the slight technicality that we're not Irish.

Is this the beginning of The American Invasion sound in Ireland? Probably not. It's still fun, though.

You Americans have been spoiled over the last year or so, what with your unlimited access to our debut album Bliss! But did it every occur to you that there were those less fortunate who had to buy the album as an import? Who only dreamed of one day being able to walk into a store and buy the CD?

Well, a little more of the world got a little more fortunate, as we can officially announce that Ireland's yesboyicecream records, the kind and clever folks behind the June Brides tribute album that we're on, will be releasing Bliss! in Ireland and the UK and probably some other places that we dream of visiting but millions call home.

The record has been remastered, and has been given a new running order, so you completists out there have a reason to take a trip to Dublin just to buy it. The release date isn't set, but we're assured that it's any day now. Stay posted.
