The Big Bend National Park is a land of contrasts. Although it consists primarily of semiarid plains characterized by gravel covered slopes, arroyos, and washes, this general landscape is interrupted by conspicuous mountain belts and by the winding Rio Grande which has carved spectacular canyons through some of the rugged highlands. Romantic interest is added by the close proximity to the people of Old Mexico and by the colorful legends and stories of the country.

PALOMAR OBSERVATORY The world's largest astronomical observatory has been built by the California Institute of Technology on Palomar Mountain, 69 miles north of San Diego. The observatory will consist of seven buildings, costing over $6,500,000. The outstanding feature of the observatory is the recently installed 200 inch mirror, the largest reflector in the world. The grinding and polishing of this giant glass disc took 11 years and 2 months.

The Palomar Observatory is no longer the largest in the world, but it is still active for research and public presentations.

Hi folks, / Arrived Tues. Are pretty well settled now. Sure like it here. / This bridge is just about 12 mi from here. Is really something. Hope all are well. / Donaldsons

This postcard was sent just three years after construction of the Sunshine Skyway, then a two-lane bridge. In the late 1960s/early 1970s, two additional lanes were added. Two disasters struck the bridge, literally, in 1980. In January, the USCGC Blackthorn hit the bridge after lights from the tanker Capricorn interfered with the crew's ability to see. In May, the Sunset Venture freighter hit a support column during a storm, destroying 1200 feet of the southbound lanes. Over 50 people died in these two accidents.

Just seven years later, on April 20, 1987, a new bridge was constructed and is still in use today, though there are concerns over possible corrosion in the steel material.
