Peggy Cypher’s latest solo exhibition “Animal Spirits” has been reviewed by Jonathan Goodman in The Brooklyn Rail.

“Peggy Cyphers has put on a show of startling originality at the Proposition, located nearby the New Museum on the Lower East Side. The artist, who has more than three decades of experience living and working in New York, calls the exhibition Animal Spirits, in reference to the creatures symbolized by feathers or fur or claws in her compositions. As a painter interested in challenging her audience, Cyphers here has locked in the standpoint of her field of view, so that the viewer’s outlook occurs as if he were looking upward toward a sky separating four images, each occupying a corner of the painting. Although the names of the paintings are often the names of animals, there is, as well, the feeling that one has raised his head in the midst of a canyon surrounded by dark buildings—a common experience in New York City. The Proposition at CONTEXT art miami

The Proposition is pleased to participate in the new cutting-edge, first annual CONTEXT art miami. Our Booth (D32) will present three gallery artists: Dane Paterson, Lee Vanderpool and Balint Zsako.

The fair takes place from December 5-9 with a VIP opening on Tuesday, December 4, 5:30-10pm.

We will feature “APPETITE,” Balint Zsako’s first and only monumentally-scaled work with accompanying works from this delightful series of watercolor and ink drawings. Zsako’s work from this series will also be featured in the upcoming publication by PHAIDON, VitaminD2, a global survey of drawing today featuring over 100 top emerging artists.

From Dane Patterson’s most recent show “Again, and again, and again…” we present a small group of intricately detailed graphite on paper drawings in his signature style. To quote Patterson, “My working process has always had a certain obsessive quality. Photorealistic graphite drawings, which have for a while now been my primary medium, require hours of careful and detailed rendering. My recent turn to repetition as content brings to my work a parallel, if somewhat muted, obsessive quality to the subject matter.”

From Lee Vanderpool, who premiered his first solo NYC show this season, we will exhibit a fantastic sampling of freshly completed works. Vanderpool speaks of his work, “…color acts as a stage, a ground from which paint and “I ” ( a visual element made by a dot and a stroke) play out non-objective narratives, underwritten by fetishes, pleasures and anxieties. “I” is the subjective metaphor in the work. This confluence creates an environment for color to mediate sensations and feeling, and become a space for visual meditation.

Mark Reigelman’s Manifest Destiny in Top 50 Public Art Projects

The Proposition’s Mark Reigelman public sculpture Manifest Destiny has been recognized as one of the Top 50 public art works from Americans for the Arts. The work is on view in downtown San Francisco until October 31, 2012.

Proposition Artist Discovered by Hollywood

Watercolor and ink drawings by Balint Zsako represent the artwork of a leading character in Sarah Polley’s new film which was released in New York this week. Balint Zsako’s artwork is not only noticably scattered and displayed throughout the home of the film’s starring artist, but also graffitted on the walls.

“After the Fact : Paintings for Coco” was featured in ARTE FUSE. Read the excerpt below

In the classic fantasy movie The Wizard of Oz, the moment Dorothy opens the door of her tornado blown shack from her black and white world back in Kansas – COLOR abounds then her adventure begins with the yellow brick road! The same exuberance is expressed by Evan Levine with his selected color rich abstract paintings for his solo show “After the Fact: Paintings for Coco” at the Proposition. Arte Fuse landed at the opening reception last June 9, 2012 and everything looked better live and in Technicolor.

The show featured some smaller scale canvases executed between 2011 and 2012. These started off as studies, which he then took a picture of and enlarged it in order to plot each component on a bigger canvas then paint it to a more clear detailed 80 X 80 inch squares. Careful paint layering, hand drawn shapes, lines, blurred colors and various tonal combinations made this a vivid tapestry quite enticing to dive into. A folk art vibe emanates upon initial glance but the more you concentrate on the details that you find yourself drawn into a fantastical landscape. Click here to read full review…

Another Yale M.F.A. with a practiced hand at Cuisinarting recent and historical painting tropes, Levine offers up infectiously appealing abstractions that are richly colorful and densely composed, and seem to bounce off everything from 1980s Neo-Geo to folk-art quilts. They’re definitely an eyeful. On view at The Proposition through July 15.

Balint Zsako Profiled in The Villager

Stephanie Buhmann has written an in depth article profiling Proposition artist Balint Zsako. This article is in the April issue of The Villager, the local paper covering Lower Manhattan and Greenwich Village.

“Looking at the work of Balint Zsako compares to reading a novel or studying a map. In his exploration of complex narratives by means of figuration, the eye travels from detail to detail, from color accent to definite form.

Born in Budapest in 1979, he immigrated with his family to Canada in 1988 (growing up in Hamilton and studying in Toronto). After graduating with a BFA from Ryerson University, he settled in Brooklyn in 2007. In the context of these geographic changes, art was always a constant. Both of his parents are artists (his mother, Anna Torma, works in embroidery — while his father, Istvan Zsako, is a sculptor). For Zsako, thinking in visuals is natural. Read More…“
