Statement:

FEEDBACK, by Maria Gaspar, is originally released as a vinyl record housed within an artist book of the same name. FEEDBACK is an audio-visual publication that serves as a living archive of Gaspar’s work over the past seven years around issues of mass incarceration inside and surrounding Cook County Jail. The experimental sound works on the record were developed through a series of workshops led by Gaspar inside Cook County Jail with a group of incarcerated men, collectively called the Radioactive Ensemble for her project and site intervention: Radioactive: Stories from Beyond the Wall. The record is comprised of two works, Side A and Side B, and is an exploration of down-time that glimpses the fusion of boredom with the necessity of expression. The two sound works echo each other, and include outtakes, performances, and experiments recorded by the Radioactive Ensemble inside Cook County Jail, a space of limbo and the in-between.

Radius Episode 90 hosts Maria Gaspar. Maria Gaspar is an interdisciplinary artist whose work addresses issues of spatial justice in order to amplify, mobilize, or divert structures of power through individual and collective gestures. Through installation, sculpture, sound, and performance, Gaspar’s practice situates itself within historically marginalized sites and spans multiple formats, scales, and durations to produce liberatory actions. Gaspar’s projects have been supported by the Art for Justice Fund, the Robert Rauschenberg Artist as Activist Fellowship, the Creative Capital Award, the Joan Mitchell Emerging Artist Grant, and the Art Matters Foundation.

Maria has received the Sor Juana Women of Achievement Award in Art and Activism from the National Museum of Mexican Art, and the Chamberlain Award for Social Practice from the Headlands Center for the Arts. Gaspar has lectured and exhibited extensively at venues including the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; the African American Museum, Philadelphia, PA; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She is an Assistant Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, holds an MFA in Studio Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.

Statement:

Before the invention of radio and electromagnetic wave theory, Thomas Watson spent time at night listening to the sounds “produced by the telephone” when no one was connected. Later we would learn that electricity travels through the air and that these sounds are natural radio waves heard through long power lines that act as an antenna.

Long Waves Scan is a practice of listening to radio signals blindly. Nicolas Montgermont performed Long Waves Scan live using only a radio set as the sound source. The frequencies that passed through the site were scanned to identify interesting sounds, and then used with a set of effects to modified their timbre and temporal structure. Over time, the frequencies gradually transform into music using only a radio set as a synthesizer.

Radius Episode 89 hosts Nicolas Montgermont. Nicolas Montgermont explores the physicality of waves in different forms. He is interested in the reality of waves in space, the way they move and change, the links between a source and our perception, by designing setups that create a sensitive exploration of their poetic essence. He creates installations, often in collaboration with Cécile Beau and formerly in the Art of Failure collective, in which time is of particular importance and allows an intimate appropriation of these materials and energies, he is also active in the audiovisual performance field with chdh and in the experimental music with BCK and Yi King Operators. He has published several editions on Art Kill Art. His projects are shown in many centers in Europe and elsewhere (Club Transmediale, Elektra, MusikProtokoll, Fondation Vasarely, Palais de Tokyo, WRO, iMAL, PixelACHE).

Radius will be featured in and in partnership with the global radio event Soundcamp | Reveil, a 24-hour radio broadcast based in London that tracks the sunrise around the globe.

Starting near the Greenwich Meridian at 5AM, Reveil travels West following the grey line just ahead of sunrise, when birds and other organisms generate a continuously changing wave of sound. Live audio feeds are supplied by streamers around the world using devices from phones, laptops and Raspberry Pi’s to commercial broadcasting equipment. Domestic scale projects join formal research networks to realize a collective composition of environmental sounds lasting one earth day.

2019 marks Radius’ fifth consecutive year of partnership with Soundcamp | Reveil. Past Radius Episodes produced for Soundcamp | Reveil include artists Eric Leonardson, Lindsey french, Peter Speer, and Sadie Woods.

Friz writes “Radius neatly unites radio and transmission art by embracing the production of artistic content for broadcast, sampling existing content for artistic expression, and artistic use of the electro-magnetic spectrum generally. Radius functions as an intermittent exhibition space and as an intervention into the predictable daily grind of the FM dial.”

Statement:

Black Seas is an ongoing body of work under the influence of historical and contemporary experiences of auditory hallucination. After scouring texts from modernist feminist writing to horror and weird literature, cognitive science studies, oral histories, 18th century psychic journals, colonial postcards and “post”-colonial critique, film and music influenced, or traumatized, by hallucination, sound and communications studies, religious tracts, philosophical threads, Situationist diatribes, studies on the psychology of solitary confinement, stories of lost and dying explorers, numerous sound, installation, video and transmission works have emerged.

In the month of March, 2018, Bates was working in Krems an-der-Donau, Austria preparing for a Black Seas Ensemble performance at the Minoriten Church. Over five evenings Bates also did a daily radio broadcast from his studio. Black Seas (Radius) is a reworking of the material broadcast over these sessions and includes feedback, wind noise from a fan, piano resonance, radio static, and production recordings from the church.

Radius Episode 87 hosts Steve Bates. Steve Bates is an artist and musician living in Montréal. Early experiences of playing and touring in punk rock bands, being a gardener for twelve years, managing a community radio station and studying philosophy and theatre design as an undergraduate student throughout the 1980-90’s all made significant impacts on his ideas of living and art-making.

Recent areas of investigation have included the history of barbed wire, feedback, boredom, the night as a sensual, political and free space, and most recently, auditory hallucination. He imagines this current project as a way of listening to noise through desire, agency and otherness. His work has been exhibited and performed in Canada, the United States, Europe, Chile and Senegal. He works in the field, on the air, in museological/gallery and performance contexts. These shifting territories reflect the content of his practice.

Radius presents the release of our new book: Radius GROUND

“Between May and September 2016, Radius commissioned Lindsey french, Anthony Janas, and the duo Gambletron & Johnny Forever to create site-specific broadcast programs for GROUND. Their work comprised three episodes (73, 74, and 75), which were transmitted live from different temporary stations throughout the greater Chicago region: a greenhouse, a lake, and a state park. This publication exists as a commemoration of the 2016 GROUND series. Consisting of interviews with each of the GROUND artists, it signals a postbroadcast opportunity for us to reflect with each project’s creator(s) after the series’ completion.”

Statement:

Limen explores the dimensions of liminality, or a passing through the threshold between distinct phases, afforded through the use of electromagnets. Binary signals are used to rapidly pulse the magnets on and off, resulting in an analog field. The presentation of various materials to this field produces a wide range of sonic output. Proximity to steel instruments yields acoustic excitation; proximity to dynamic microphones and radios yields audible interference patterns. Throughout Limen, a pre-composed sequence of pulses were presented through magnets, creating a dynamic, yet pre-determined electromagnetic field. Miller & Quinn were free to interact with this field in an improvisatory manner, adjusting parameters of input sources and modifying their proximity to the electromagnets. Several recordings of improvised sessions were then woven together, with the resulting piece existing in the liminal spaces between digital/analog synthesis, improvisation/composition, and real-time/offline production.

Radius Episode 86 hosts Eric Miller & Patrick Quinn.

Eric Miller is a composer, performer, and multi-modal installation artist with a primary focus on the induction of non-ordinary states of consciousness through sensory stimulation. Techniques employed for achieving such states include immersion, sensory isolation, improvisation, and cross-modal binding between the visual, auditory, and tactile.

A multimedia artist based in Troy, New York, Patrick Jo Quinn utilizes socio-poetic methods to investigate physical + digital space, and occasionally, electronic musical instruments. In collaboration with Publication Studio Hudson, Quinn recently published his first book of poetry, Drift/Copy/Paste Poetics I (2017). Research interests include direct action, psychogeography, aleatory poetry, and remix studies.

Radius Episode 85 hosts Peter Barnard. Peter Barnard’s output as an artist primarily deals with associations and encounters, some of which emerge from the element of chance, that act as a starting point for artistic production. Much of this emerges as sound, installation, sculpture, performance and moving image while engaging with recurring themes concerning dualism, memory and representation. Born in London, UK (1987), Peter Barnard received his BA Hons in Fine Art at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, 2012.

Barnard has exhibited at various art-spaces, galleries and has had his work presented in many screenings and radio broadcasts. He has shown in the United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand, Brussels, Germany and India. Recent exhibitions/screenings have taken place at Bloc Projects, Sheffield, UK; Firstsite, Colchester, UK and IKLECTIK Art Lab, London, UK.
