After months of speculation that PAS and Bersatu were no longer moving in the same direction, the Islamist party has finally announced that it is severing all political ties with its Perikatan Nasional (PN) ally.

In a statement issued late Monday night, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party’s Central Working Committee had decided to end its political cooperation with Bersatu.

The decision came after the PAS central committee reviewed the current position and future direction of PAS-Bersatu relations based on reports, studies and prevailing assessments.

“The Central Working Committee has decided to stop political cooperation with Bersatu,” Abdul Hadi said in the statement.

The move finally ended the relationship between what is arguably the strongest Malay opposition bloc post-2018, after months of growing speculation over tensions between the two parties.

Despite ending its alliance with Bersatu, PAS said it remained committed to the principle of Muslim unity and would continue exploring new forms of political understanding and electoral cooperation ahead of the upcoming state elections and the 16th General Election (GE16).

According to Abdul Hadi, the party’s decision was made in line with a resolution adopted by the PAS Syura Council on June 2.

The meeting also added that there are growing interest among academics, professionals, political leaders and civil society activists to join PAS.

Although both PAS and Bersatu have been at odds for some time, tensions between the two PN components escalated following the political upheaval in Perlis earlier this year.

The rift became more pronounced after Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Ramli was forced to relinquish his position as Perlis Menteri Besar, paving the way for Bersatu’s Datuk Abu Bakar Hamzah to assume the post.

The development sparked anger within PAS, with leaders and grassroots members accusing Bersatu of betraying its long-time ally in a bid to wrest control of the state’s top executive position. PAS leaders maintained that the move was orchestrated by Bersatu despite the latter insisting that Abu Bakar’s appointment was made in accordance with the wishes of the Perlis Palace and was beyond the party’s control.

What initially appeared to be a disagreement over the Perlis leadership soon evolved into a bigger strain in relations between the two parties, with public exchanges and competing narratives exposing growing cracks within the opposition coalition.

The friction resurfaced again months later during the political impasse in Negeri Sembilan in April, where PAS openly expressed dissatisfaction with Bersatu’s stance.

The Islamist party reportedly took issue with Bersatu’s decision to remain neutral despite having withdrawn support for the Pakatan Harapan administration led by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

PAS leaders viewed Bersatu’s refusal to fully back efforts aimed at toppling the state government as a sign that the party was unwilling to stand firmly alongside its coalition partner, further deepening mistrust between the two sides.

The series of disputes fuelled speculation that the once-close partnership between PAS and Bersatu had become increasingly untenable, culminating in PAS’ decision on Monday to formally end its political cooperation with the party.

However, the implications for PN remain unclear, particularly as the coalition’s chairmanship is currently held by PAS vice-president and Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Mohd Samsuri Mokhtar.

Saya mengikuti pandangan yang dikemukakan oleh Dato’ Seri Rafizi Ramli mengenai keperluan KEADILAN menyediakan barisan pelapis untuk meneruskan agenda Reformasi pada masa hadapan.

Sebagai sebuah parti yang lahir daripada semangat perubahan, KEADILAN tidak pernah takut untuk berdepan dengan persoalan-persoalan besar mengenai masa depannya. Perbincangan tentang pelapis kepimpinan bukanlah sesuatu yang baharu, malah ia merupakan proses yang perlu berlaku dalam mana-mana organisasi politik yang sihat dan demokratik.

Namun begitu, saya percaya adalah tidak tepat untuk menggambarkan seolah-olah KEADILAN gagal melahirkan generasi kepimpinan baharu atau tidak mempunyai kapasiti untuk meneruskan perjuangan selepas era kepimpinan Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Hakikatnya, sejak penubuhannya pada tahun 1999, KEADILAN melalui beberapa generasi kepimpinan. Ramai tokoh yang pada suatu ketika dahulu merupakan aktivis muda, petugas parti atau pemimpin cabang kini memegang tanggungjawab besar sebagai anggota pentadbiran, Ahli Parlimen, Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri, pimpinan parti serta pemimpin masyarakat.

Di Selangor, KEADILAN diketuai oleh pemimpin muda era Reformasi, Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari selaku Menteri Besar Selangor.

Proses kelahiran pemimpin dalam KEADILAN tidak berlaku secara kebetulan. Proses ini adalah hasil daripada budaya parti yang memberikan ruang kepada kader baharu untuk belajar, memimpin dan memikul tanggungjawab.

Malah, antara kekuatan utama KEADILAN sejak awal ialah keupayaannya menghimpunkan pelbagai latar belakang, generasi dan pengalaman dalam satu wadah perjuangan yang sama. Daripada mahasiswa dan aktivis masyarakat sivil, kepada profesional, ahli akademik dan pemimpin akar umbi, semuanya mempunyai peluang untuk berkembang dalam parti ini.

Atas sebab itu, persoalan masa depan KEADILAN tidak boleh dilihat semata-mata melalui lensa siapakah individu yang bakal menggantikan Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Persoalan yang lebih penting ialah sama ada nilai-nilai Reformasi terus dipertahankan, institusi parti terus diperkukuh dan generasi pemimpin baharu terus diberikan ruang untuk berkembang.

Dalam hal ini, saya yakin KEADILAN berada di landasan yang betul.

Apa yang diperlukan sekarang bukanlah rasa pesimis terhadap masa depan parti, tetapi komitmen bersama untuk memperkukuh proses pembinaan kepimpinan yang telah berlangsung sejak lebih dua dekad lalu.

Kita harus mengakui bahawa tidak ada seorang pun pemimpin yang akan kekal selama-lamanya. Namun sejarah juga mengajar kita bahawa perjuangan yang berasaskan nilai akan sentiasa menemukan pemimpin-pemimpin baharu untuk meneruskannya.

KEADILAN tidak lahir daripada keselesaan kuasa. KEADILAN lahir daripada keberanian rakyat untuk menuntut perubahan. Selagi semangat itu hidup, selagi itulah parti ini akan terus melahirkan generasi pemimpin yang bersedia memikul amanah perjuangan Reformasi.

Masa depan KEADILAN tidak terletak pada seorang individu. Masa depan KEADILAN terletak pada keupayaannya untuk terus melahirkan pemimpin yang setia kepada cita-cita Reformasi dan aspirasi rakyat Malaysia.

Dalam hal ini, hak untuk memberikan kritikan dan pandangan yang jujur merupakan sebahagian daripada budaya Reformasi yang kita perjuangkan sejak awal penubuhan parti.

Namun begitu, saya berbeza pandangan dengan kesimpulan bahawa KEADILAN akan kehilangan arah atau tidak mampu bertahan selepas era kepimpinan Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Sejarah membuktikan bahawa KEADILAN bukan sebuah parti yang bergantung kepada seorang individu semata-mata.

Sepanjang lebih dua dekad perjuangannya, KEADILAN melalui pelbagai ujian besar. Pemenjaraan pemimpin utama, tekanan politik yang berterusan, perpecahan dalaman, kehilangan tokoh penting, sehinggalah episod pengkhianatan yang hampir menjatuhkan kerajaan negeri dan pusat.

Namun setiap kali diuji, KEADILAN bukan sahaja mampu bangkit, malah terus berkembang sehingga menjadi tunjang kepada Kerajaan Malaysia MADANI hari ini.

Hal ini kerana asas perjuangan KEADILAN bukanlah seorang pemimpin, tetapi cita-cita Reformasi yang berteraskan keadilan, demokrasi, tadbir urus yang baik, pembanterasan rasuah serta peluang yang lebih saksama untuk seluruh rakyat Malaysia.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim sememangnya merupakan simbol dan wajah yang menggerakkan dan mencetuskan perjuangan tersebut selama lebih dua dekad.

Namun, simbol tidak harus dikelirukan dengan institusi. Seperti mana mana-mana organisasi politik yang matang, pemimpin akan datang dan pergi, tetapi nilai dan perjuangan mesti diteruskan.

Pandangan bahawa KEADILAN tidak mempunyai pelapis juga tidak mengambil kira realiti perkembangan parti. KEADILAN mempunyai gabungan pemimpin berpengalaman yang melalui era Reformasi bersama generasi baharu yang berjaya membuktikan kemampuan mereka di Parlimen, kerajaan, negeri dan organisasi parti.

Proses pembinaan kepimpinan bukanlah sesuatu yang berlaku dalam satu pilihan raya atau satu pemilihan, tetapi merupakan proses yang berterusan. Dato’ Seri Rafizi Ramli juga produk KEADILAN.

Malah, hakikat bahawa begitu ramai tokoh politik yang pernah dibentuk dan dibesarkan dalam KEADILAN terus memainkan peranan penting dalam landskap politik negara membuktikan bahawa parti ini sentiasa menjadi medan melahirkan bakat dan kepimpinan.

Dalam masa yang sama, KEADILAN tidak boleh terlalu asyik membincangkan soal individu yang bakal memimpin pada masa hadapan sehingga melupakan tanggungjawab utama kepada rakyat hari ini.

Rakyat lebih mahu melihat usaha mengurangkan kos sara hidup, meningkatkan pendapatan, memperkukuh institusi negara dan membina ekonomi yang lebih adil.

Politik yang matang bukan sekadar mencari pengganti individu, tetapi memastikan institusi menjadi lebih kukuh daripada mana-mana tokoh.

Semangat Reformasi yang lahir pada 1998 tidak pernah bergantung kepada satu nama. Perjuangan ini hidup kerana keyakinan bahawa Malaysia berhak mendapat sebuah sistem yang lebih adil, lebih demokratik dan lebih berintegriti.

Atas sebab itu, saya yakin KEADILAN akan terus relevan bukan kerana siapa yang memimpinnya, tetapi kerana nilai yang diperjuangkannya masih menjadi harapan jutaan rakyat Malaysia.

Pemimpin akan silih berganti. Perjuangan Reformasi mesti terus hidup.

Jokes aside, there are plenty of people out there who dream of becoming elected representatives — from status and influence to salary and perks, the idea of becoming a “Yang Berhormat” is certainly attractive to many.

So, if that’s your ambition, you might actually want to try putting your name forward as a candidate for a political party led by former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.

The first catch is that applicants must first register as members through the party’s membership portal at https://bersama.org/ms/daftar.

In a press statement today, Bersama — also led by another former Cabinet Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad — said that all confirmed applications will be reviewed by a Candidate Committee.

According to the former Pandan and Setiawangsa MPs, the committee will also examine applicants’ previous political involvement to ensure they do not carry political baggage that is inconsistent with the party’s direction.

After the first screening stage, shortlisted candidates will undergo a second round of vetting involving digital background checks and community-level feedback to assess public perception of the individual.

“Candidates who pass all stages will be considered potential BERSAMA candidates and will be announced in batches from time to time,” the statement read.

Applicants are required to state the parliamentary or state seat they wish to contest. Under the law, state assembly candidates must reside or be registered in the respective state.

Priority screening will be given to finalising candidates for the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.

The party also said the candidate application portal will remain open on a continuous basis until Parliament is dissolved.

So, if you’ve ever dreamed of becoming an elected representative — now might be the time to register.

Both Johor and Negeri Sembilan state legislative assemblies were dissolved on June 1 and 4 respectively.

The Election Commission (EC) however have yet to set the exact date for the election in both states.

Tremors were felt in Tawau, Semporna and surrounding areas after a powerful 7.9-magnitude offshore earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines, at 7.37am today. The epicentre was recorded approximately 97km south of Koronadal City, at a depth of around 50km.

Footage circulating widely online showed a group of schoolchildren huddled on the ground as adults swayed alongside them during the tremors in Semporna, Sabah. At the rear of the group, a woman could be seen urgently waving people away from a nearby structure, and they moved just moments before the structure gave way and collapsed.

A few Malaysian favourites from the McDonald’s Malaysia menu stole the social media spotlight at the McDonald’s Worldwide Convention.

The event, a massive, bi-annual gathering of the fast food chain’s franchisees, suppliers, and top-performing crew members, was held from 1 to 4 June in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Attendees could sample all the different menu items from McDonald’s from all over the world, while franchise operators could compare notes with their international counterparts.

Among the most talked-about menu items from Malaysian outlets were the Smokey BBQ McShaker Fries and the Salted Caramel Oreo McFlurry.

A popular item from McDonald’s in Brazil is the Cheddar McMelt, an iconic burger known for its signature dark, sesame-seed bun featuring a savoury beef patty, rich cheddar cheese sauce, and onions caramelized in soy-based sauce.

Meanwhile, McDonald’s Japan’s Garlic Pepper Chicken McNuggets are a fan-favorite, limited-time menu item. They use 100% chicken breast seasoned with garlic, black pepper, and chili. They were so popular that they have been rolled out to international markets, including Singapore and Australia.

What do you get when you put a half-Malaysian, half-Taiwanese Twitch streamer on MasterChef Season 16? That’s right —”roti kanai.”

Before anyone comes after Jamie Tan, better known online as iGumdrop, it is worth noting that she was born and raised in the United States.

Nevertheless, Jamie pulled off a surprise when she represented Malaysia under Team Asia-Pacific and emerged victorious in this week MasterChef 16’s “World Cup Cookoff” challenge.

Even more impressive, the content creator prepared a spread of Malaysian favourites comprising roti canai with curry, nasi lemak and salad.

The dish, one familiar to almost every Malaysian, managed to impress celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Tiffany Derry.

Jamie herself appeared stunned when the judges selected her entry as the best dish from the Asia-Pacific team.

Ramsay, who is famous for his no-nonsense approach in the kitchen, was particularly impressed by her decision to prepare roti canai, a dish traditionally known for requiring a lengthy and labour-intensive process.

“It looks beautiful. Jamie, what I’m most impressed with, is traditionally, that takes hours to make. The fact that you had the confidence to attempt it tonight, I’m just happy for you,” said Ramsay.

Remarkably, Jamie managed to prepare the entire meal within an hour and ultimately led Team Asia-Pacific to victory, beating dishes from Europe, Africa and the Americas.

The win also earned her the coveted Immunity Pin, protecting her from elimination in a future challenge, as well as a US$2,500 Home Depot gift card.

Many Malaysians were delighted by Jamie’s performance, not least because the victory guarantees that she will continue representing Malaysia on the competition for at least two more weeks.

However, as any Malaysian would tell you, success comes with conditions.

Despite her triumph, some Malaysians were still left mildly dissatisfied — not because of her cooking, but because she pronounced roti canai as “roti kanai”.

In true Malaysian fashion, winning MasterChef is one thing. But mispronouncing our favourite dish on TV? That’s bound to earn some unwarranted scolding.

He said the campaign’s logo, mascots and theme song embody Malaysia’s diverse tourism offerings and unique experiences, while the long-running “Malaysia, Truly Asia” slogan continues to define the nation’s tourism identity.

“As a preferred tourist destination, this campaign allows us to introduce Malaysia’s culture, heritage, natural attractions and the hospitality of Malaysians to the world,” he said during the launch, held at Pejabat Pos Besar Lama, Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, in Kuala Lumpur, today.

Also present were Director General of Tourism Malaysia Mohamad Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim and Pos Malaysia Berhad Group Chief Marketing Officer Fiona Liao.

Chiew added that Visit Malaysia 2026 is not solely aimed at attracting more tourists but also serves as a platform to spur economic growth, create jobs and benefit communities nationwide.

“The way we treat visitors, maintain cleanliness, preserve our cultural heritage and promote local tourism products will shape the experiences of every tourist who comes to Malaysia,” he said.

Police have warned citizens not to make speculations or spread rumours regarding the fatal car crash that claimed the lives of six family members during a tragic accident in Pinang Tunggal, near Sungai Petani, yesterday (7 June).

Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah asked the public to give the police some space to conduct a full investigation to determine the actual cause of the incident, New Straits Times reported.

The accident is believed to have occured around 3.50pm, and involved a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and a lorry carrying soil.

“The SUV carrying seven family members including a policeman, was heading towards Sungai Petani on their way to Merbok to visit the grave of a family member while the lorry, driven by a 49-year-old local man, was heading towards Tikam Batu.

“The accident caused the death of six family members, while another three-year-old girl sustained severe injuries to her face,” Adzli told reporters at the Forensic Department of the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

Police are carrying out a full investigation to determine the cause of the accident

He said that many members of the public privately sent him WhatsApp messages containing false information about the accident after footage of it went viral on social media.

“Some people told me that the lorry driver was drunk and also brought up the driver’s race. I would like to inform that the victims are Malay and the lorry driver is also a Malay, so such actions are highly irresponsible,” he said.

Adzli added that preliminary investigations revealed that the lorry was being driven at only 60kmh, but there were also parties claiming that the SUV might have had issues as it was only recently purchased and delivered.

“So we will investigate all aspects including sending the SUV to the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) for further inspection,” he said.

According to Adzli, the driver’s urine screening turned out negative, although he does have a record of seven prior summons.

The lorry driver was produced in court today for a remand request but the Sungai Petani Magistrate’s Court rejected the application.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,

The six victims who lost their lives in the accident were identified as Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Shukri, 29; Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri, 21; Jamaliah Sannusi, 29; Nora Mohd Husin, 55; Iskandar Affan Ibrahim, 7; and Ahmad Mikail Ahmad Syafiq, 2 months. Meanwhile, the little girl who was injured in the incident is three-year-old Aulia Sofea Ahmad Syafiq.

Dashcam footage of the incident went viral, many made speculations about the cause

Footage of the accident, which circulated on social media, showed an SUV driving down a small road before it slowly veered into the opposite lane and eventually hit a lorry in a head-on collision.

A few users shared photos of the family, who had only recently bought the SUV involved in the fatal accident.

Meanwhile, many also shared their condolences with the family of the deceased victims, while imparting advice on not driving a vehicle while sleepy or tired.

When the National Gallery of Victoria opens its doors to Cartier on 12 June 2026, visitors will walk through a survey of more than 300 extraordinary objects — precious jewels, historic gemstones, iconic watches and clocks — spanning over a century of one of the world’s most recognised luxury houses.

The exhibition, created by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in partnership with the NGV and in collaboration with Cartier, is billed as an Australian exclusive.

For most Malaysians, Melbourne is not an unfamiliar destination.

Arrivals from Malaysia reached 213,681 for the year ending December 2025, a five per cent increase compared to the previous year, according to Tourism Australia.

Seven in 10 Malaysian leisure travellers return for another visit, and Melbourne ranks among their preferred cities.

But there is a more specific reason why this particular exhibition resonates more closely with home.

A Tiara That Vanished From Record — and Reappeared in Pahang

In October 2024, royal observer Saad Salman — who runs the website The Royal Watcher and is acquainted with members of the Malaysian royal family — reported that a diamond tiara believed to be Queen Mary’s Diamond Lozenge Bandeau had reappeared at a Malaysian royal ceremony.

The Cartier-designed tiara had been commissioned by Queen Mary, wife of King George V, in the early 1910s.

She was photographed wearing it at public appearances throughout the 1930s, including the Leicester Square premiere of The Ghost Goes West in 1935 and a charity gala at London’s Savoy Hotel in 1939.

In 1948, she loaned it to her granddaughter Princess Margaret, who wore it at the inauguration of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands.

Its last confirmed public appearance was in a 1965 portrait of Princess Margaret.

For nearly six decades, royal watchers assumed it remained locked in the British royal vaults.

A Conclusion, Not a Certification

Instead, according to Salman’s account, the tiara was sold at a New York auction in 1988.

Princess Chulabhorn Walailak — Her Royal Highness, the youngest daughter of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit — recommended that the then-Queen Consort of Pahang, Tengku Ampuan Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, purchase it.

She did, and over the following three decades, the tiara was worn at Malaysian royal occasions including weddings, banquets and official portraits.

It was reidentified when Tengku Natasya Adnan, princess of the Sultanate of Pahang, wore it at her Istiadat Berinai — a traditional Malay ceremony held prior to a wedding.

Salman, who visited the Pahang palace to examine the piece, wrote: “I went to the Palace last night, where the Queen and I have excitedly come upon the conclusion that her Diamond Bandeau must be the one from Queen Mary, as we cannot find any differences.”

It is important to note that the identification has not been independently verified by Cartier or a third-party gemologist; it is based on a detailed comparison of historical photographs conducted by Salman and Queen Azizah of Pahang.

The Art Behind the Object

The NGV exhibition traces Cartier’s evolution from its early years at the turn of the 20th century through to its most contemporary creations.

Alongside jewels, it includes design drawings from the Cartier archives, offering what the gallery describes as “a rare glimpse into their exceptional craftsmanship.”

The exhibition design is a collaboration between the NGV, Studio Sabine Marcelis and CLOUD, two multidisciplinary design practices based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

For readers unfamiliar with the design world, this pairing is worth unpacking, because it signals that Cartier didn’t just hire decorators.

They hired artists who speak the same language as the jewels themselves.

Loans have been drawn from private and institutional collections across Europe, the United States and Asia, as well as from the Cartier Heritage Collection.

The story of the Diamond Lozenge Bandeau — commissioned in London, worn by British royalty, sold quietly in New York, and carried to a palace in Pahang — is not the subject of the NGV exhibition.

But it is, perhaps, an illustration of what the exhibition is ultimately about: that the objects Cartier made did not stay where they were made.

They moved, changed hands, and found their way into the lives of people far beyond the salons of Paris and London.

Cartier opens at NGV International in Melbourne on 12 June and runs until 4 October.

A petition calling for the deportation of Rohingya refugees from Malaysia has triggered sharp pushback from civil society groups who say the campaign is spreading misinformation and fuelling real-world violence.

The petition, posted on Change.org under the pseudonym “Aku Anak Malaysia,” claims that the presence of Rohingya refugees has placed growing pressure on Malaysia’s resources, infrastructure and social services.

But rights group Pusat KOMAS says that claim does not hold up to scrutiny — pointing out that the Rohingya community makes up approximately 0.4 per cent of Malaysia’s total population.

“Narratives like this deliberately portray the Rohingya community as only taking from the country,” KOMAS said in a statement, “while ignoring the fact that many of them contribute to Malaysia’s economy despite living in precarious conditions and facing frequent exploitation.”

KOMAS called on Change.org to remove the petition, arguing it violates the platform’s own community guidelines by containing discriminatory content and misleading claims targeting an ethnic group.

More alarming, the group said, is what the petition appears to be enabling beyond the screen — an increase in online calls for physical harm against Rohingya individuals, including threats to attack their homes.

Although the petition creator does not state this explicitly on the platform, this context is important in showing how such petitions are being used with malicious intent.

“A Misreading Of Islam”: ABIM Pushes Back On The Coward Narrative

The same day, the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) issued a separate statement urging Malaysians to step back from what it called a wave of extreme hatred directed at the Rohingya.

ABIM acknowledged that public concerns over security, jobs, and social harmony were real and should not be dismissed — but drew a firm line between legitimate grievance and collective punishment.

Valid anxieties must not turn into hatred against an entire group of people.

ABIM also pushed back against social media narratives labelling Rohingya men as cowards for fleeing Myanmar rather than staying to fight, calling such characterisations a misreading of Islamic teaching.

The group cited Surah al-Anfal, verse 74, which elevates both those who migrate under oppression and those who shelter them as mukminun haqqan — true believers — framing the act of giving refuge as a religious obligation, not merely a humanitarian choice.

ABIM is not a peripheral voice.

Founded in 1971, the organisation carries decades of moral authority in Malaysian civil society — its alumni include Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who served as its president in the 1970s before entering politics, giving the group a credibility that stretches across generations and ideological lines.

The UN Calls It Genocide, Malaysian Law Calls Them Undocumented

Both organisations noted that Malaysia has a history of sheltering refugees from conflict zones, including the Vietnamese, Bosnian Muslims, the Chin community from Myanmar, and refugees from Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, and Afghanistan.

The Rohingya are among the world’s most persecuted minorities, having fled a military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine State that the United Nations has described as bearing the hallmarks of genocide.

Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, meaning Rohingya refugees have no formal legal status in the country and are technically classified as undocumented migrants.

That legal gap has long complicated efforts to manage the refugee population through formal policy channels, leaving many Rohingya vulnerable to exploitation, detention and deportation.

Meanwhile, Rohingya refugees themselves have begun speaking out, appealing directly to Malaysians to understand what drove them from their homes — not ambition, but survival — and to meet their presence with compassion rather than suspicion.

Firm, But Not Cruel: Civil Society Draws The Line

KOMAS urged the government to address public concerns through structured, evidence-based policy rather than allowing fear and misinformation to drive the national conversation.

ABIM echoed that call, pressing the government to strengthen its approach across security, education, health and community relations — arguing that Malaysia can be firm on sovereignty without abandoning its humanitarian principles.

“We can be firm without being cruel,” ABIM said. “We can manage the refugee challenge effectively without sacrificing the principles of compassion and human dignity.”

Both statements stopped short of calling on the government to grant the Rohingya formal refugee status — a politically sensitive position that neither organisation addressed directly.

How Malaysia responds, ABIM said, will ultimately say more about the country than about the refugees themselves: “The way we treat the most vulnerable will be the mirror of the values we hold as a nation.”

It was not a smash that ended Malaysia’s campaign at the Indonesia Open.

It was a red card.

At 20-20 in the deciding game of their quarter-final on Friday (5 June), mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie saw a point transferred directly to their French opponents — Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue — after Soon Huat was penalised for time delay under the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) 25-second time clock system.

France won the next point to seal the match 21-15, 18-21, 22-20.

The husband and wife pair did not dispute the existence of the rule; what they disputed was its application — and the moment it was applied.

A Rule Still Being Tested

The BWF’s 25-second time clock, which requires the server to be ready before the clock expires between rallies, is explicitly still in a trial phase.

The system was first tested at the Indonesia Masters in January 2026, with the BWF stating that “enforcement will be mainly limited to verbal warnings” during initial trials.

It was subsequently extended to the Indonesia Open 2026, held from June 2 to 7 at Istora Senayan in Jakarta, where the BWF confirmed the system would be “in effect for all matches, with full enforcement by umpires as per regulations.”

That shift — from verbal warnings to full enforcement — sits at the heart of the controversy.

What Happened On Court

According to a statement posted on social media by Shevon, Soon Huat had earlier received a yellow card in the match after briefly leaving the court to retrieve grip powder, as his racket handle had become slippery.

He did not immediately return upon the umpire’s instruction — not, Shevon said, out of defiance, but because Istora Senayan’s famously loud crowd made it impossible to hear the call.

The red card came later, at the match’s most critical juncture.

At 20-20 in the third game, with the French pair taking time to prepare for their serve, Soon Huat briefly turned to communicate with Shevon.

By the time he returned to his position — which Shevon said was “well before the next point started” — the umpire issued a red card.

Under BWF regulations, a red card for a continuous or significant breach results in a point being awarded to the opposing side.

The French pair were handed a match point at 21-20, and they converted it.

Within The Rules — But Was It Within Reason?

On the strict letter of the law, the umpire was acting within her full, sanctioned authority — BWF’s Laws of Badminton permit red cards for repeated breaches, and the Indonesia Open was confirmed to operate under “full enforcement” of the time-clock trial.

A red card following an earlier yellow card is also consistent with BWF’s graduated misconduct framework.

But the question Soon Huat and Shevon are raising is a different one entirely.

Shevon’s statement was careful not to attack the umpire or the BWF — instead, it challenged the structural logic of applying match-deciding punitive consequences under a rule not yet fully established.

She also flagged a second gap: unlike tennis, which has electronic line-call reviews, or cricket’s Decision Review System, badminton offers players no on-court mechanism to contest umpiring decisions — leaving them, as she wrote, “forced not only to compete against their opponents, but also to deal with questionable rulings and the psychological impact that comes with them.”

The red card, issued by Indonesian umpire Helen Purnama Sari, has since ignited a firestorm among Malaysian fans — a reaction sharpened by the long-running badminton rivalry between the two nations.

The BWF has not indicated whether the time clock trial will be reviewed following the Indonesia Open.

The system is expected to continue at select tournaments through the remainder of the 2026 season.

For now, the pair’s exit from Jakarta leaves behind a question that extends well beyond one match: when does a trial become a verdict?

The Malaysian pair were not alone: Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh also received a yellow card for an alleged time delay at the same tournament, with observers noting that the umpire had flagged him despite his opponents not yet being ready to receive — suggesting the enforcement inconsistency extended beyond a single match.

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is not programming this one for comfort.

When the ASEAN Youth Orchestra takes the stage at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on 27 June, the programme will open with John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare and Theme, move into Russian composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and close with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 — “The Titan.”

That final work alone is a statement.

Mahler was a late 19th-century Austrian composer whose symphonies were considered too long and too strange in his lifetime — “The Titan” was booed at its 1889 premiere and is now considered one of the great works of the Romantic era.

It is a serious, structurally ambitious symphony that professional orchestras approach with care.

Putting it in the hands of 84 young musicians from seven ASEAN nations is either a bold artistic bet or a genuine declaration of confidence.

Possibly both.

The Gala Is the Destination, The Week Getting There Is the Journey

The soloist for the Rachmaninoff is Malaysian pianist Celestine Yoong Qian Yi.

The Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is one of the most technically demanding works in the piano repertoire — 24 variations built on a single Paganini theme, culminating in the famous 18th variation that has soundtracked more films than most people realise.

Performing it at DFP, with a regional youth orchestra, under MPO Resident Conductor Gerard Salonga, is not a small occasion.

It is the kind of debut moment that gets remembered.

The festival runs from 21 to 28 June, and the Gala Concert on 27 June is not where it starts.

Before the curtain rises at DFP, there are 12 free public workshops at the historic Rumah Tangsi mansion in Kuala Lumpur, running from 23 to 25 June — sessions led by MPO musicians, open to anyone, and centred on knowledge sharing and artistic exchange between the visiting youth musicians and the public.

A World Premiere, a Full Orchestra, and Four Familiar Voices — All Free

On 25 June at 8.00 pm, the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) will perform a free community concert at the DBKL Auditorium.

Themed MPYO & Friends: Echoes of the Region is the programme where the festival gets genuinely interesting for a wider audience.

Malaysian singers and musical artists Aina Abdul, Amir Masdi, Ruebben Chelvan and Ruhil Ariana join the MPYO for a set that moves between ASEAN folksongs, Rasa Sayang, Tanah Pusaka, You Raise Me Up, Pangako Sa’ Yo and Sahabat Selamanya.

It is a crossover moment — a youth orchestra sharing a stage with some of Malaysia’s most recognisable voices, bridging the gap between the concert hall and everyone who has never set foot in one.

The most quietly significant item on the programme is a new work by local composer Sebastian Ooi, entitled Memories of Childhood, which will receive its world premiere at that same community concert.

A Malaysian composition, premiered by a Malaysian youth orchestra, at a regional festival — that is the kind of cultural moment that tends to be mentioned in passing and remembered for years.

A 19-year-old university student came across a lending advertisement on social media before 12 May, applied for RM1,000, and received only RM700 — a common practice in illegal lending, where fees are skimmed upfront.

The student, identified only as Ye, used the money for an online investment.

On 25 May, he repaid the full RM1,000 principal as agreed, and when the lender asked whether he wanted to borrow again, he said no.

That refusal triggered what would become a weeks-long campaign of escalating demands, rotating characters and carefully timed threats.

By the time it was over, Ye and his family had lost RM16,800 — 24 times the original loan.

The case was made public on Friday (5 June) when Ye held a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, accompanied by MCA Youth leaders.

The Fees That Never Ended

Almost immediately after Ye declined to borrow again, the lender demanded RM8,000 as a “clearance fee” — supposedly to delete his personal data, including his identity card number and home address, from their records.

Sensing something was wrong, Ye filed a police report at the Wangsa Maju police station.

The syndicate appeared to find out almost immediately — the next day, threatening messages landed in his family members’ phones, and those messages contained details that seemed to echo what Ye had told police, leaving the family feeling that even the authorities could not protect them.

The demands did not stop there.

The family was told they now owed an additional RM4,800 because the police report had allegedly caused a bank account to be frozen, and another RM4,000 to have Ye’s name removed from a blacklist — bringing the total to RM16,800.

Wanting the nightmare to end, the family paid it all, transferring the money in stages to the accounts they were given.

It Still Did Not End

On the same night the final payment was made, Ye received a message from a man who claimed he had been paid RM1,000 to spray-paint the family’s home and offered to stand down in exchange for RM3,000.

Ye’s father called the original lender to confront them.

During that conversation, he noticed that the bank account provided by this new individual was linked to accounts used earlier in the scheme.

The family concluded that they were dealing with the same syndicate operating under different personas and refused to pay further.

Shortly after, another man contacted Ye, claiming to be the syndicate’s boss.

He demanded RM12,000 to call off the runner, and set a deadline of 1 June — warning that if payment was not received, the family’s home would be splashed with paint and set on fire.

Unafraid of Police, Until the Cameras Came

With no clear path forward, the family reached out to MCA Youth’s Federal Territory chapter for help.

Mike Chong, the chapter’s state chief and MCA deputy president of the youth wing, said he personally contacted the loan shark syndicate after receiving the appeal.

The response, he said, was defiant — the person on the other end said they were unafraid of the police and continued sending threatening messages to Ye.

However, once the case became public and MCA Youth’s involvement was known, the harassment stopped.

Chong said he had also been in contact with the Wangsa Maju district police chief, who confirmed the case would be investigated.

He advised anyone with genuine financial needs to approach licensed lending institutions rather than responding to advertisements on social media.

Abdullahakmal also hopes political parties will outline concrete plans to boost local economies in Johor Bahru and rural areas, while addressing the outflow of workers to Singapore due to limited opportunities and low wages in Johor.

Johor Bahru-based operations manager Boon Ming Choon, 46, echoed similar concerns.

He said the next state government should focus on creating quality jobs, attracting investments, improving infrastructure and public transport, and ultimately raising incomes and living standards.

Despite having to potentially vote twice should the state election be held separately from the next general election, Boon said he had no issue doing so.

“For the sake of our future generation,” he said.

For Kuala Lumpur-based food trader Roseni Slamat, 49, returning home to vote has become a tradition she has maintained since her younger days.

She said she intends to travel back to Johor to cast her ballot and spend time with her family in Pasir Gudang.

Roseni’s business partner, Zaleena Zakaria, also 49, said she would similarly return to vote, just as they did during the 2022 state election.

“Both of us also went back in 2022 to vote. I’m hoping the next state government would provide more high-paying jobs for the future generation.

“Hopefully our kids won’t have to move out from Johor to make money for themselves like us,” she said.

However, not all voters are enthusiastic about the prospect of another election.

Kuala Lumpur-based lawyer Arjun Mohanakrishnan, 33, admitted he no longer feels the excitement he once had when he first voted in the historic 2018 general election, where he also volunteered as a polling and counting agent.

Having experienced governments led by Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional, Arjun said ordinary Malaysians have seen little difference regardless of who is in power.

“Politicians are politicians, despite the different logos,” he said.

He added that Johor desperately needs fresh and courageous leaders capable of breaking away from decades of political familiarity.

“If my constituency has a stronger alternative compared to the mainstream parties, perhaps I will feel excited.

“Johor really needs fresh and courageous politicians. It feels the same for the past few decades,” he said.

Caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi dissolved the Johor state legislative assembly on June 1 following the consent from Johor Regent.

In the last state election BN won 40 out of the 56 state seat offered in Johor followed by PH (12), PN (3) and Muda (1).

Political analysts are divided over who has the most at stake in the upcoming Johor state election, though Umno leaders have emerged as the figures facing the biggest political gamble.

International Islamic University Malaysia political analyst and ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute fellow Associate Professor Dr Syaza Shukri said that Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi arguably has the most at stake as the election is widely seen as a Barisan Nasional (BN)-driven move.

While acknowledging speculation that the push for the early polls could have come from Johor Umno and BN chief Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi or the Johor palace, Syaza said the Umno president would inevitably be linked to the decision.

“I would argue that the one most at stake is perhaps Zahid. Because this is a BN-led move. Some say Onn Hafiz is behind it, some say the palace, but whatever it is the president must be behind it as well.

“If the gamble works and BN comes up winning a comfortable majority then great. But if not, that would set the tone for other elections and the need for Zahid to defend his role as president of Umno,” she told TRP via WhatsApp.

Syaza said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also had much to lose, but could argue that the decision to seek fresh polls was beyond his control.

On whether Johor could serve as a precursor to the 16th General Election (GE16), Syaza said timing would be crucial.

She said that if the 16th General Election (GE16) is held shortly after the state polls, the outcome could set the tone for the national contest.

However, she cautioned against reading too much into the results if the general election is only held towards the end of next year.

“We have to remember that’s what happened in 2022. BN was confident because they won Johor’s state election, but then when GE happened at the end of the year, BN came in third,” she added.

Meanwhile, Universiti Malaya senior lecturer Dr Mohammad Tawfik Yaakub believes Onn Hafiz himself has the most riding on the election after initiating the dissolution of the state assembly despite BN already enjoying a comfortable majority.

According to Tawfik, the polls have effectively become a referendum on the Menteri Besar’s leadership, governance record and ability to secure a stronger mandate from voters.

“A convincing victory would strengthen his position within Umno, while a weaker performance could invite criticism over the necessity of holding an early election.”

Onn Hafiz surprisingly announced the dissolution of the Johor state legislative assembly on June 1, despite having said that the Johor state government has over a year more to govern the state.

At the federal level, Tawfik said Anwar would also face scrutiny as the Johor polls are expected to reflect public sentiment towards the Unity Government and the cooperation between Pakatan Harapan and BN.

“A strong showing by the ruling coalition would reinforce confidence in the current federal arrangement, whereas a disappointing result could provide ammunition to critics who argue that support for the government is weakening ahead of the GE16.”

Beyond deciding the next state government, Tawfik described the Johor election as an important barometer of Malaysia’s political direction.

He pointed out that Johor’s mix of urban, semi-urban and rural constituencies make it an ideal testing ground to gauge support for both established and emerging parties.

The election, he said, would reveal whether voters remain supportive of the current political order, test PN’s ability to expand its influence among Malay voters and offer the first meaningful assessment of newer political forces seeking to challenge traditional parties.

Monash University Malaysia issued an urgent security notice to students and staff, urging them to temporarily evacuate the campus around 11.40pm on 4 June 2026.

The next day, the university shared that the Sunway City campus is safe. It was revealed that the university received an alleged bomb threat, and the police had carried out a security assessment of the campus. The police provided clearance for normal campus operations to resume on 5 June 2026.

On 5 June, Monash’s Clinical School Johor Bahru (CSJB) campus in Johor also received clearance from the police and relevant authorities after a security assessment was carried out. The campus resumed normal operations on the same day.

Monash University said it will continue working with the authorities and review its current safety and security protocols.

In a separate and possibly unrelated incident, Taylor’s University campus in Subang Jaya activated its emergency response protocols also on 5 June. Initially, they called it a ‘’security incident” and ordered the students and staff to evacuate as a precaution.

Videos online showed a crowd gathering and waiting outside the campus building.

In an official statement later, the university confirmed the emergency response procedures were activated due to a bomb threat.

Following a thorough security sweep, the Subang Jaya district police declared the campus safe and normal operations resumed.

Taylor’s University requested the public to follow official updates from the campus and relevant authorities.

Before Belly Treats became a popular dessert destination in Johor Bahru, founder Nurul Haziqah Mazlan, 34, also known as Zyqa Mazlan, was simply baking for fun from home.

It began with a birthday cake for her boyfriend, who is now her husband.

She posted the cake on Facebook, and friends and family started placing orders.

Soon, orders began coming from people she had never met. Alongside direct customer orders, she also supplied cakes to well-known stores around Johor Bahru.

As demand grew, her home kitchen could no longer keep up.

The business continued to expand, and later moved into a larger, more strategic location in Larkin, where customers could buy desserts for takeaway or dine in.

Learning Business Along The Way

Zyqa did not enter the food and beverage industry with formal business training. She was a Diploma in Science student and taught herself dessert-making through magazines, YouTube, and websites.

“I started with interest and curiosity, then learned everything myself,” she said. “That experience of starting without business knowledge shaped how I see business today.”

She credits consistency, curiosity, and a willingness to try new things as the traits that helped her grow Belly Treats.

Early In The Johor Dessert Scene

When Zyqa started Belly Treats, Johor’s dessert cafe scene was still developing. She believes the timing worked in her favour because there were relatively few dessert-focused competitors in the area.

“F&B was starting to grow rapidly, and desserts were still a relatively open space in JB,” she said.

As the business expanded, new challenges emerged: raising capital, buying equipment, managing raw material costs, and overseeing staff.

“When the business grows, the responsibilities grow too,” Zyqa explained. “You’re not only responsible for food quality and service, but also for ensuring daily operations run smoothly.”

One of the most difficult moments came when Belly Treats lost nearly 70,000 Instagram followers after years of building its social media presence. The brand then had to start rebuilding from scratch.

“It was mentally challenging because social media is very important in F&B,” she said. “But it taught me not to rely on numbers alone. I focused on building stronger connections with loyal customers and continuing to create content consistently across platforms.”

What Keeps Customers Returning?

According to Zyqa, the biggest factor behind Belly Treats’ longevity is staying consistent while continuously evolving with customer preferences.

One of the cafe’s unique practices is changing cake flavours daily, so regulars always have something new to try. She also enjoys creating desserts that are harder to find elsewhere in Johor Bahru.

Ideas come from customer feedback, current trends and her travels abroad, where she studies desserts and presentation styles for inspiration.

Signature Dishes

The menu item closest to Zyqa’s heart is the Pecan Butterscotch Cake, one of Belly Treats’ earliest customer favourites.

Another standout is the cafe’s mac and cheese, which many customers consider a must-order dish whenever they visit. (We tried it btw, SO GOOD).

Meanwhile, the Smores Cookie Bar, introduced in 2021, has become one of the brand’s most enduring hits. Belly Treats has developed more than 20 flavour variations, creating anticipation among customers eager to see what flavour appears each day.

A Different Rhythm During Ramadan

Every Ramadan, Belly Treats takes a different approach. Instead of operating as a cafe, the business temporarily closes for a month and focuses on selling Raya cookies.

The process begins weeks before Ramadan, when hundreds of vendors send in samples for consideration. According to Zyqa, more than 300 submissions are typically received each year, with every product reviewed before selections are made.

“We look at quality, taste and variety,” she says.

The selection process is also carefully managed.

If too many vendors offer similar cookies, Belly Treats may limit the number accepted to ensure customers are presented with a wider range of choices.

Over time, the annual Raya cookie initiative has become a significant part of the business, creating a seasonal shift from the cafe’s usual dessert offerings while showcasing products from a diverse group of local bakers and entrepreneurs.

What plays a major role in shaping the business, according to Zyqa, is customer feedback.

“We read comments, reviews, and feedback carefully because it helps us understand what customers enjoy and what needs improvement.”

Social media has also been central to Belly Treats’ growth, particularly on Instagram, TikTok, and Threads, helping the cafe reach new audiences and showcase its atmosphere and new menu launches.

Zyqa hopes Belly Treats will continue growing into a stronger brand recognised beyond Johor Bahru. She plans to expand the menu further, not only in desserts but also in savoury offerings, while exploring opportunities to grow carefully into other states if the timing is right.

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs

“Don’t wait until everything is perfect before you start. Sometimes you just need the courage to begin, even if you’re starting small.”

After all, Belly Treats itself began with a single homemade birthday cake and a Facebook post. The rest was built through persistence, learning, and the willingness to keep showing up every day.

This appointment makes Tunku Nadzaruddin the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, succeeding Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

At the same time, Rais questioned the legality of the DUN dissolution, arguing that Nadzaruddin had already been appointed state ruler by the ruling chiefs on April 19.

“Now, that is a very big question, and I would urge that all legal minds now focus on it,” Rais said.

Rais added that under Article 28 of the state laws, the definition of the ruler includes the Undang, who were not consulted during the dissolution process.

Meanwhile, The High Court in Seremban today granted an ad interim injunction to stop a planned special sitting of the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang Negeri Sembilan (DKU) and to prevent any attempt to remove its secretary, Raja Norazli Raja Nordin.

The injunctions were obtained by Raja Norazli and the DKU as part of their legal challenge in court, reported NST.

As a result, the plaintiffs — including former Undang of Luak Sungei Ujong Datuk Mubarak Thahak, the Undang of Luak Jelebu Datuk Maarof Mat Rashad, the Undang of Luak Johol Datuk Muhammed Abdullah, the Undang of Luak Rembau Datuk Abdul Rahim Yasin, the Tunku Besar of Tampin Tunku Syed Razman Tunku Syed Idrus Al-Qadri, and the Shahbandar of Sungei Ujong Datuk Seri Badarudin Abdul Khalid – are barred from convening any DKU meetings, including a special sitting that had taken place earlier today.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Federal Government only recognises Tuanku Muhriz as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.

He said the position was based on the law and the Federal Constitution, stressing that any attempt to remove or depose a ruler would have far-reaching implications for the country and national stability.

“I do not deny anyone the right to pursue matters through legal channels and the state constitution, but the arguments must be strong. That is why we view this seriously and I have conveyed this view to the relevant parties.

“We must follow the court process that made its decision earlier, and we have also given our advice, but the declaration was nevertheless proceeded with at the hotel,” Anwar was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

The Negeri Sembilan customary crisis has been ongoing since April, when four Undang, including Datuk Mubarak Thahak of Sungai Ujong, whose position itself has been disputed, announced the dismissal of Tuanku Muhriz and proclaimed Tunku Nadzaruddin as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar, with immediate effect.

The 70-year-old driver involved in the fatal head-on collision that killed a food delivery rider a month ago has not been charged—a fact that has led to public questions.

Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar announced on 18 May that police had completed their investigation and submitted the case to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) for review.

Because he is out on bail, he is not considered a flight risk and remains under the authorities’ supervision.

The case is being actively investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

Building the Case: Evidence Requirements

The Proton X70 must undergo a mandatory, comprehensive mechanical inspection by PUSPAKOM.

Investigators must rule out or confirm mechanical issues, such as a stuck accelerator pedal or brake failure, before attributing full criminal fault to the driver.

Complete post-mortem and toxicology reports for the victim, alongside final medical clearance documents for the elderly driver, must be officially compiled into the case file.

The police do not have the power to charge someone in court for Section 41(1) on their own.

Once police gather all dashcam footage, witness accounts, and mechanical data, they submit the Investigation Paper (IP) to the DPP.

Why Some Cases Move Faster Than Others

Cases involving alcohol or drug impairment can result in charges within 48 hours under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act, as breathalyser and blood test results provide immediate evidence.

However, investigations under Section 41(1) for reckless or dangerous driving require extensive forensic documentation, and multi-week or multi-month gaps between accident and court charge are standard in Malaysian traffic fatalities.

The Sam Ke Ting “Basikal Lajak” case in February 2017 saw the driver charged over a month later despite national media attention, while the 2024 Penang Bridge crash required nearly three weeks of back-and-forth between traffic police and the DPP to verify structural damage and dashcam evidence.

Once police submit the investigation paper to the DPP, the prosecutor’s office conducts a thorough review—a process that typically takes anywhere from two weeks to several months, depending on case complexity and workload.

Once the DPP clears the case file, the driver will be officially summoned to court and formally charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

If convicted, he faces a mandatory prison sentence of five to 10 years, a fine of up to RM50,000, and a minimum five-year driving licence suspension.

Petaling Jaya OCPD ACP Shamsudin Mamat told The Rakyat Post that the investigation paper has been sent back to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) for further instructions. He added that the public will be updated once feedback is received from the DPP’s office.

Dr Amalina Che Bakri has officially earned her PhD in Surgical Innovation and Breast Cancer from Imperial College London.

She posted pictures of her graduation on her official Instagram, including a heartfelt message to her daughters, Arabella and Aurora.

In her message, she expressed her hope that her daughters would one day understand that she pursued her PhD out of love for them.

During all the long nights away from home, Amalina admitted there were times she felt guilty and was worried she wasn’t doing enough as a parent. But in those moments, she shared that her love for her daughters never wavered.

She hoped her daughters would look back on this day and be proud of their mum because she tried for herself, the world, and both of them.

According to Imperial College London’s official website, Amalina’s research focuses on the use of wearable technology to improve surgical and patient outcomes. Her work encompassed the use of artificial intelligence and radiomics, an advanced medical imaging technique that uses AI-driven algorithms to extract massive amounts of quantitative data from standard medical scans like CT, MRI, and Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

Making Malaysia proud

Amalina graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2013 with a medical degree. She also completed a BmedSc in Pharmacology and an ERASMUS exchange at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

She then did an internship at Harvard Medical School in the United States, followed by foundation training in Cambridge. At the University of Cambridge, she completed a Master’s in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics.

During her surgical training in London, she was awarded the prestigious Darzi Clinical Research Fellowship.

Amalina also actively shares medical knowledge on social media for medical students, junior doctors, and the public.

Her contributions earned her various accolades, including being Highly Commended at the UK Women of the Future Awards (2021), the Inspirational Youth Award from the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Malaysia, and the Muslim National Award from the King of Malaysia.

The leadership crisis in Negeri Sembilan shows no sign of easing despite the official dissolution of the state assembly today.

Earlier today, four Negeri Sembilan traditional chiefs — Undang Luak Johol Datuk Muhammed Abdullah, Undang Luak Jelebu Datuk Maarof Mad Rashad, Undang Luak Rembau Datuk Abd Rahim Yassin and Datuk Syahbandar Sungei Ujong Datuk Seri Utama Badarudin Abdul Khalid — were temporarily barred from entering the official residence of Tunku Besar Tampin, Syed Razman Syed Idrus Al-Qadri.

Syed Razman’s residence was the venue for the Special Sitting of the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU).

According to Berita Harian, the adat dignitaries had arrived at the location at around 9.30am but were prevented from entering by authorities.

Johol Undang Muhammed Abdullah slammed the move to bar them from the special sitting, describing it as a disgrace to Negeri Sembilan’s traditional institution.

“I seek your cooperation. If there is any unrest or dissatisfaction, I will take responsibility. If action is necessary, summon me to the police station.

“I am not in charge of security outside. Please do not humiliate the adat institution.

“If this were the Conference of Rulers, would you stop them? The same principle applies to the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang. Open the gate now — I want to enter,” he said, as quoted by Malaysia Gazette.

However, the tense situation was eventually defused after Syed Razman himself came to the front gate and instructed that it be opened, allowing the traditional leaders to enter the premises.

Former Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Rais Yatim was also spotted at the gathering.

The Negeri Sembilan customary leadership crisis escalated after four Undang questioned Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun’s ability to lead the state and openly stated that he “deserved to be removed”.

In April, there were also attempts to remove the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, further deepening the unprecedented tensions within the state’s centuries-old adat institution.

Kelantan religious authorities have launched an investigation into Malaysian influencer and entrepreneur Farhana Zahra over a ghost-themed birthday party she organised for her three daughters in Tumpat.

Popularly known as Cik Na, she threw the RM500,000 party on 29 May with the theme ‘’Bunian Village.’’ According to Malay superstition, the orang bunian or invisible people are believed to be supernatural beings from another dimension.

Videos of the extravagant event showed attendees dressed in all-white clothes while actors dressed as ghosts, pocong, or the dead roamed about. One or two attendees also walked down the ‘’aisle’’ with gifts in hand. In another clip, it looked like two male actors were waving their hands in front of a crouched female ‘’ghost.’’

Farhana, who runs a beauty and dietary supplement business, was asked to give a statement to the Kelantan religious authorities because her event was said to contain elements deemed inconsistent with Islamic teachings.

The Kelantan PAS government observes a strict interpretation of Islamic law. State mufti Mohamad Shukri Mohamad stated that worshipping ghosts is prohibited in Islam, adding that birthday celebrations for children should be conducted in a manner permissible under the religion, such as through prayers or other practices in accordance with syariah law.

Farhana gave her statement

Farhana gave her statement to the religious authorities on 2 June. She shared that she didn’t know holding a ghost-themed party would cause issues because there are haunted houses at schools and expos in Kelantan. She said the incident was a lesson for everyone.

The Kelantan Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAHEAIK) is in the final stages of completing its investigation papers on the case. The case is investigated under Section 12 of the Syariah Criminal Code Enactment 2019.

Farhana isn’t a stranger to controversy. Last year, she made headlines after she apologised for only spending RM1 million on her daughter’s 11^th birthday.

Negeri Sembilan caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said the state government needs a fresh mandate from the people following the political turmoil that saw repeated attempts to withdraw support for his administration.

Announcing the dissolution of the Negeri Sembilan Legislative Assembly last night, Aminuddin said the move was necessary to resolve the uncertainty surrounding the state government and allow voters to decide the state’s future.

“We saw the political turmoil unfold. Initially, there were claims that several Umno assemblymen had withdrawn support for me and intended to leave the government.

“It is not suitable for a government to continue operating under such circumstances. Therefore, a fresh mandate from the people is needed,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

The dissolution, which takes effect on Friday, was granted by Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir after Aminuddin sought an audience with the ruler at Istana Hinggap at 8.30pm on Thursday.

Aminuddin said the dissolution was carried out in accordance with the Negeri Sembilan State Constitution 1959 and that the state government would formally notify the Election Commission (EC), which will determine the dates for nomination and polling.

He also revealed that the decision to dissolve the assembly had received the agreement of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Rejecting claims that the move came as a surprise, Aminuddin said the worsening political situation necessitated returning the mandate to the rakyat.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that seat negotiations among Pakatan Harapan component parties had been concluded, with the coalition set to contest all 36 state seats.

However, he declined to reveal the distribution of seats among PKR, DAP and Amanah, saying an official announcement would be made next week.

“The seat allocation has been finalised. We will contest all 36 seats and details will be announced next week. Amanah has agreed, DAP has agreed, and PKR supports the arrangement.”

In April, 14 Barisan Nasional (BN) reps in Negeri Sembilan withdrew support for Aminuddin leading to a political crisis in the state. Both PH and BN previously held 31 state seats in Negeri Sembilan while Perikatan Nasional (PN) holds five seats.

Malaysians can soon apply for a new Malaysian passport with a 10-year validity for RM350. The standard 5-year option for RM200 remains available.

The 10-year passport option is available to those aged 18 to 59, as gazetted on 3 June. However, there has been no announcement yet on when Malaysians can start applying.

A longer passport validity helps reduce paperwork, and frequent travellers don’t need to renew as often as before.

This follows the new government order, the Fees (Passports and Visas) (Amendment) Order 2026), which was gazetted and came into effect on Wednesday.

For those not aged between 18 and 59, this is the pricing for the 10-year passport validity:

• Age 60 and above: RM175 | RM100 for 5-year validity
• Age 18 and above + OKU card: Free
• Immigration Department officer/staff: Free

The following groups remain under the 5-year passport category:

• Children aged 12 and below (RM100).
• Students aged 21 and below enrolled in overseas degree programmes (RM100).
• Pilgrims travelling for Haj (RM100).
• Individuals under 19 with disabilities (Free).

What’s the replacement fee for a 10-year passport?

The amendment sets the fee for the replacement of lost and damaged passports at:

Age 18 to 59:

• RM550 for the first replacement.
• RM850 for the second replacement.
• RM1,350 for the third and subsequent replacement.

Senior citizens:

• RM375 for the first replacement.
• RM675 for the second replacement.
• RM1,175 for the third and subsequent replacement.

Eligible OKU card holders and Immigration Department staff:

• RM200 for the first replacement.
• RM500 for the second replacement.
• RM1,000 for the third and subsequent replacement.

Additionally, the amendment changes the wording related to students studying abroad. The updated regulations narrow the eligibility criteria for students, now specifying those ‘studying for a degree programme abroad’ rather than the broader term ‘studying abroad’ used in earlier provisions.
