Jay Batt Again Linked to Entergy
Former Councilman Still Can’t Wean Himself from Utility Trough

New Orleans -   According to the Times Picayune and campaign finance reports filed with the state Ethics Commission, former Councilman Jay Batt recently received $500 from Entergy consultant William Broadhurst.  Batt is trying to reclaim the Council District A seat he lost four years ago, primarily due to voters’ frustration with his close ties to the utility giant.

“I guess we shouldn’t be surprised Entergy is once again loading Jay Batt’s cart since he spent his time on the Council doing their bidding at every opportunity,” said Susan Guidry, Democratic candidate for District A.  “Instead of learning his lesson in the last election, Jay Batt is up to his same old tricks.  He’s taking another swing at the council, but after being sent to the dugout for four years, he’s still the same ‘ol Jay Batt.”

As a Member of the City Council, Jay Batt sided with Entergy over and over while electric bills kept going up for Orleans Parish consumers.  Batt took thousands in campaign contributions from Entergy and their lobbyists and used their private jet.

“The City Council wisely passed a resolution that they would volunteer to refuse donations from Entergy, or their advisors and consultants.  The same standard should apply to candidates for Council which is why I will not accept any money for my campaign from Entergy.  Jay Batt should adhere to the same standard, return the tainted money and wean himself from Entergy’s money trough,” continued Guidry.

According to B.H., a trip to WDSU’s studio confirmed that the Perry Campaign purchased just over $3,000 worth of television ads, consisting of a measly 8 spots.  Considering it would defy logic to buy $3,000 worth of ads on one station, and $19,000 worth of ads on each of the other 3 stations, it appears Mr. Perry’s ad buy is less then $15,000. 

That is a $45,000 difference.  Therefore, the Reduct Box is now calling on Boy Scouts of America to revoke Mr. Perry’s Eagle Scout rank, as he has blatantly violated the Boy Scout Code of Honor, which clearly states :

I am deeply disappointed in Congressman Cao’s  votes to block this historic bill to reform our nation’s healthcare system.  In this Congressional District, the bill would close the prescription drug hole for 5,600 seniors; provide tax credits to help reduce insurance costs for 11,100 small businesses and provide coverage for 63,000 residents.

Overall, this bill will expand access to healthcare for the uninsured, lower cost and increase competition in the marketplace, and reform the insurance industry by preventing such discriminatory practices like denying health insurance to people with preexisting conditions.

Though he voted for final passage of the bill, after the bill had already received the two hundred and eighteen votes to secure a majority, Congressman Cao first made back to back votes against the bill.  He voted for the draconian Republican “healthcare” bill which would not even prevent insurance companies from denying people coverage because of preexisting conditions, and he then voted for the Republican backed motion to recommit. 

Just like he did when he voted against President Obama’s Economic Recovery Package and against women receiving equal pay for equal work, Congressman Cao chose the extreme right wing in the Republican Party over President Obama and Congressional Democrats who want to reform the system.

Congressman Cao’s actions today, had he had his way, would deny his constituents affordable healthcare.  This is outrageous and only further highlights the need for an effective representative  who shares the values of those in the Second Congressional District. 

As a Congressman, I will break from Congressman Cao’s record of ineffectiveness and blind partisanship and work with President Obama to bring affordable, quality healthcare to our community.

Cedric Richmond Raises Over $115,000 in his First Quarter

Building Momentum for his Race for Congress

NEW ORLEANS, LA. –  Today, State Representative Cedric Richmond exceeded all expectations by  announcing he has raised over one hundred and fifteen thousand dollars in the third fundraising quarter in his campaign for Louisiana’s Second Congressional District.

 Richmond announced his candidacy on September 8th, meaning he raised the impressive total in shortened quarter, outpacing public predictions and internal campaign goals.

 “I am excited so many in the community have responded to our campaign’s message this early in the process,” Richmond said.

 “Over ninety percent of our donations came from Louisiana, which only highlights the strong desire for change in this district.”

Richmond stated that he was grateful for the support he has received throughout the Greater New Orleans Area, including Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro, whom introduced Cedric as “the next congressman” at a well attended fundraiser September 29th, 2009.

 Other notable officials in attendance at the fundraiser were Jefferson Parish Councilman Byron Lee, New Orleans Councilwoman Cynthia Willard Lewis, Louisiana State Representative Walt Leger, attorney James Gray II, and political observer Alan Katz.

 “The Second District is in desperate need of an effective representative that will fight for every federal dollar to rebuild our levees, restore our community, and help our economy recover,” said Richmond.

 Richmond added that his fundraising total further demonstrates that he will not be outworked.

 “I am in this race because it is important to have effective leadership for Jefferson and Orleans Parish.  There continues to be too many families in our community without affordable health care, too many guns on the streets of our cities, and too many people still struggling to rebuild their lives four years after the catastrophic levee failures.”

 “As Congressman Cao continues to be ineffective in his role, the people of Louisiana continue to suffer.  Too often Cao has chosen to side with the hard line Washington Republican leadership over the people of the 2nd District.  It is a time to elect a Congressman who will work with President Obama, not against him.”
