With the Memorial Day weekend quickly approaching, it’s time to turn your attention to the start of summer and the end of the school year! It’s almost time to get out there and have some fun in the Austin sun. And the Memorial Day weekend is a great time to make that happen.

If you’re not exactly sure on what’s going on around Austin for the holiday weekend, here’s a look at some of the Memorial Day weekend events throughout Central Texas, but near The Remington apartments.

43rd Annual Fiesta Amistad: Round Rock will be hosting the 43rd annual Fiesta Amistad, “Central Texas’ largest Hispanic 2 day event“, on Memorial Day Weekend 2012. In addition to the music, there will be family entertainment and plenty of excellent food.

6th annual Crawfish fest: The Crawfish festival in Fredricksburg offers visitors Cajun and country music, crawfish and German sausages, and lots of fun for the kids as well. May 25-27.

Kerrvile’s Annual Folk & Music Fest: The annual fest is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary this year, and as always, the festivities begin on the Memorial Day Weekend.

• Free concerts: On the first Thursday of every month, the famed South Congress Street downtown comes alive with live music, street vendors and other special events.
• Lady Bird Lake: This body of water is surrounded by excellent jogging and biking trails. They are free to access. Don’t forget to stop by Auditorium Shores to see the famed statue of musician Stevie Ray Vaughan too.
• Ruta Maya: This coffeehouse has a ton of free events almost every day. Free salsa lessons, free yoga and tai chi are just some of the things you can participate in here.

Just because you’re living in an apartment doesn’t mean that you can’t have the best patio garden. You can!

Don’t let limited space on your balcony or patio limit your garden! If you’ve been looking to get into gardening at your apartment, here’s a few tips on how to plant a patio garden at the Remington.

Selecting Plants: Select plants that are compatible in terms of light, water, growth and the conditions in the chosen site. Don’t mix a shade- and water-lover like impatiens with a dry-and-sunny plant like thyme. Some plants like mint are such aggressive growers they need a pot of their own.

Watering Your Container Garden: Pay close attention to watering. For containers in sunny, hot or windy areas, watering twice a day may be necessary. A plant that has outgrown its pot will also need more frequent watering.

Consider using a water-absorbing polymer; it will improve the moisture retention of the potting soil. Follow the directions on the package.

With all of the green living ideas and events that happen around town, it’s probably hard to not have been exposed to the green movement by yet. But even with that said, there’s more you can do to get involved with in Austin.

If you haven’t yet gone green because you think it is too much of a transition, here’s 3 easy ways to go green in Austin.

Buy local: When you buy local you support your local economy and limit the long-distance transportation needed to move products to your area, this helps reduce the carbon footprint before it even gets into your bag.

Research: Whenever possible, do your homework before shopping, especially for large items. You can save a lot of money in this area with some good research and comparison of products.

Buy things that last: Spending a little extra money upfront on a better, longer lasting product can save you money and the environment in the long run.
