CNN.com interviewed a man who lost his house in the California fires. He had lost his wife to cancer a few months earlier. His spirit perfectly embodies the theme of my message. Here’s a rough transcript I took from the video:

Standing amidst the ruins of his home, voice full of emotion; appearing positive, a thankful smile on his face. “You know, life is a journey, and I’ve had a few bad days. But it’s been a beautiful experience for the last five days: I had the opportunity to see the support from the President of the United Sates; from the governor, and from the neighbors. Today I had 17 of my friends; they came to see the house, to help me just go through the rubble. I was able to find my wife’s ring. And one part of her earring….It’s just been an amazing experience. I did have 15 bad minutes, but I survived. …I made the wrong turn (running away from the fire) but I am just glad that I am safe. And as I look forward, it is the time to really rebuild.”CNN.Com interview 10/28/07

Yes, there is always a ring in the rubble, figuratively, and in this case, literally. Get digging for yours. What are you waiting for?

Just saw a story about a young man who lost his life in an accident. He was an organ donor. They interviewed his parents for the story (on ESPN2) and arranged for the parents to meet several of the people who had received their son’s organs. While nothing could ever replace their son or remove the pain of his loss, to see the immediate love and connection between the parents and the organ recipients, folks linked by tragedy, was moving. A beautiful ring amidst the painful rubble- it’s always there if you allow your self to search and see.

For those of you who have read the book or heard me speak you know I believe there is always a ring in the rubble, no matter how difficult the circumstance. Jeff Zaslow’s article in the Wall Street Journal Online today is a moving testament to that belief (see link below). He writes about a college professor- Randy Pausch of Carnegie Mellon- who only has a few months to live, yet just delivered one of the most inspiring and uplifting lectures of his life. Randy’s story reminds us that life is at once precious and precarious. If there is somethign you want to achieve, receive, accomplish or experience, get digging now, and with gusto. Randy teaches us that a passion for living trumps fear of dying for those willing to dig and enjoy life’s treasures. Thanks Randy, and thanks Jeff. Click here for article.

The face was creased, the hair wispy and gray. The eyes- dark, intense, alive. We crossed paths one day at the gym. “How are you today?” I asked. The old man stopped. The eyes darted and jumped. “If I told you how good I feel,” he said in a soft European accent, “well, I feel so good you might get jealous and beat me up! And you’re too big to risk that!” He turned to walk away, then turned back. Voice louder now. His joy could not be contained. “I feel wonderful. I am filled with the Holy Spirit!” As he walked away, suddenly, so was I.

Spread joy wherever you can. It’s free, easy to do, and even in small doses can make a big difference for all those you touch, even strangers. Give it a try and see what happens.

Unfortunately, job loss is a common reality for many of us. The stories are simillar: Your job gets downsized, right-sized or outsourced, and the next thing you know, you’re out of work due to no fault of your own. I hope this reader’s comments will inspire you to keep your head up and keep on digging.

My journey is only begining. It’s similar to many others - my job was eliminated. Timing couldn’t have been better for this book. The book has caused me to sit and reflect on what the new possibilities could be rather than just jump right in where I left off career-wise. Right now it’s my compass, my focus: “The ring in the rubble.” I know it is working because when I heard Atlanta Falcons QB-Mike Vick’s press conference a light bulb went off. As bad as it is for that person when he talked about the effect his behavior had on the youth, I thought there it is. The point is I can see rings in Mike Vick’s rubble. I hope he will sometime soon as well. Now I have to get back to finding my rings.

Thanks, readers, for your wonderful contributions. Keep those stories coming in! And don’t forget to share them with those who could use a pick-me-up.
