She studied at London’s Bridge Theatre Training Company, then went on to work extensively in the theatre, appearing in such roles as Helena in Chekov’s “Uncle Vanya” and Rosalind in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.” Claire has also written, produced, and starred in two short films that were devised from improvisation. Both films screened in Dublin and London. She also appeared in an episode of the successful web series, “Hurry Up and Wait,” in a episode improvised live on camera.

A photographer who loves telling stories through the camera, Claire especially likes making the disturbing appear beautiful. This is something she does as well with her writing. Her recently self-published book, “Alice,” is a dark poetic book about a little girl who lives in the walls of a house. Claire also spent the past five months living with her mother which, she says, “generated plenty of writing material.” She unfortunately has a penchant for ridiculous sorts of men. One of her favorite things to do is to prance about the stage like a pony, and her reading Wednesday in WANTED: WRITERS! will includes accounts of dates both hilarious and horrific, some galloping about the stage, and explorations of what it actually means to be a woman.

CARLILE is a native Californian from Santa Cruz, and resident of LA since 1976. His translation of the complete poetry and prose of Arthur Rimbaud–Rimbaud: The Works–appeared in 2001. Charles Nicholl has called these “…the finest English versions of Rimbaud since Wallace Fowlie’s nearly forty years ago, and in many instances they surpass that high standard.” His plays Delmore at the Last, The Trial of Tuna Christ, Jump! (Nijinsky’s madness) and Carved in the Fog have been produced in Los Angeles over the past two decades, the latter winning a Dramalogue Award in 1988. He is currently working on a long prose mini-epic and just recently completed a revision of his Bram Stoker play, Dracula or The-Undead.

“Once up, once down upon a time without a name there was a garden like a park without a theme. And it was between the rivers east of Eden and west of Salinas. There Godadog would play in the shape of a Maker … and he made figures in the clay that were alike yet not alike. And he named the one James and the other Natalie when he was done. And James was tall and seventeen and Natalie sweet and sixteen. And they moved like shadows on the wall and the wall moved not. For they were the shadows of God’s thought. And lo! it was1959 in the city of angels and the stars wept, for a serpent was hidden in the depths of the garden.” This is an excerpt from a work in progress: ORIGINAL TONGUES: a nuevo biblio mythic re:vision (where Sam the Man and Dolly LaLa in “The Book of Sams” play at bondage and head-shaving at home and, in the latterday parts, a herd of swine go swimming at the urging of a Mystic). DJ will be reading from these twisted bibical parables tonight.

Her paternal grandparents came from Russia and arrived in San Francisco while it was still on fire from the 1906 earthquake. Her maternal Russian grandmother, also Russian, was four-years-old and came through the Panama Canal with her parents as it was being built. Their guide abandoned them there instead of taking them on to North America as negotiated. Susan knew from the age of eight that she wanted to be an artist. At seventeen, she thought she would like to paint designs for fabric. She found her way to Los Angeles in the mid-seventies. With help, she landed a textile artist job after working at various graphic arts positions. She is still a textile designer today. “I write my stories,” she says, “because they were unique situations. They are about the strange characters I have met in my hapless youth. There are journeys or scenes in my mind that I find very compelling to explore in a creative way. Writing is a way of expressing what I could never paint on canvas.” Susan is a special writer, one with a powerful and unique voice whose remarkable autobiographical fiction seems to have captured directly key scenes from her life. For all those who “write your life,” this is a writer not to miss. (A big thank you to Susan’s friend, Karin Spritzler, for introducing us to Susan.)

JOE STAATS presents Variety SHOWCASE, now at The Lodge (1600 Ocean Park Blvd.) in Santa Monica, spotlights five invited, featured performers in shorter sets on one Thursday night each month. Our aim is to inspire, amuse, delight, and entertain you. Performers are carefully selected for their creativity, dedication, passion and excellence at what they do, and each program variously includes singers, musicians, spoken word/literary performers, comics, dancers, and actors/actresses with original theatre pieces. We want you to come and make an evening of it in a supper club/dinner theatre/concert atmosphere. Each performer on these programs is here for a reason and is very much worth seeing. Admission to the show is a modest $10. Several food options are available on the block (see dinner details below). Reservations are available. There is a full bar. We have a stage with professional lighting and all of the sightlines are excellent. Free parking is available behind the Lodge, or in the parking lot across the street.

BRADLEY BOBBS has a childish appreciation of poetry, or has retained his childlike sense of wonder (we think he’s a little hard on himself in this regard) which explains why his favorite poems come from books like “Winnie the Pooh” and “Alice in Wonderland”. In any case, tonight he will give a must-see dramatization of Lewis Carroll’s ‘The Walrus and The Carpenter,‘ that amuses, enthralls, and stupefies, as well as a selection from A.A. Milne‘s “Winnie the Pooh.” Plus, he will recite a few of his own poems that he describes as “gratuitously frivolous.” When he’s not being frivolous, Dr. Bobbs in his day job develops new types of lasers and other electro-optical devices. He loves L.A., especially for all the live entertainment it offers, and has lived here his entire life. Bradley, a frequent attendee at our shows and others, steps into the limelight tonight and his performance (which should not be missed!) will surprise and delight you. His set is from 8:00-8:30 pm.

Singer/songwriter BILL BURNETT has written songs and comic material for a host of famous and infamous personalities, including Bette Midler and Patti Lupone, and his songs were featured in every episode of ChalkZone, the popular Nickelodeon cartoon show he created. He also sings and plays guitar as part of our favorite pop vocal quartet, THE BACKBONERS, a unique and very talented group that also includes Suzy Williams, Kahlil Sabbagh and Ginger Smith, and for whom he writes all the songs. Burnett must be regarded as one of the preeminent contemporary California songwriters, and we are thrilled to finally have him doing a well-deserved and long-anticipated turn on Variety SHOWCASE. Bill will be performing between 8:30-9:00 pm.

In Los Angeles, Jeanette has performed in many theaters, including notably at Asylum Theater, The Odyssey, and the Hudson. She likes to write about normal, everyday things like loving relationships with suspected manic-depressives; living with terrorists/ freedom fighters, and pretending to look for work in the worst U.S. economy since the Great Depression. She’s currently writing a story cycle about her adventures in Ireland, which may be morphing into a novel, and from which she will be performing tonight. On the page, and in her acting out of the story, she brings her characters vividly, and hilariously, to life. (Apropos of nothing, whatever you do, please remember the name Joan Toronto, which is never mentioned in her story tonight.) Catch Jeanette performing live on our stage from 9:00-9:30 pm

*****NEIGHBORHOOD DINNER OPTIONS: Several close dinner options are available for those who want to eat during or before the show. (As we are now not cooking for this event, it’s okay if you want to step out and bring something back into the venue to eat at your table.) Just a few doors down from the Lodge on the same side of the street is a lovely restaurant called Thyme. Those in the know in the neighborhood also patronize Bob’s Market at the opposite end of the block, which has an excellent, inexpensive takeout deli. You can also grab pizza by The Slice from Grigorio, closer yet to the Lodge. For those of you who feel like walking, there is Café Bolivar at 1741 Ocean Park Blvd., which is two blocks down on the opposite side of the street. (Give our greetings to Alejandro.) We ask that you do not bring alcohol onto the premises, as the Lodge has a full bar. Please tip Ashley and Pam, your bartenders.

Kondomozo (at left) is a character that JUNG ji “MASA” LEE invented. “He serves,” he says, “as my surrogate self, a synthesis of Korean and Japanese cultures, a metaphor for the meeting of opposites, and the border that separates them. While one may interpret this character as a reflection of a variety of ideas and aesthetics particular to Asian experiences and identities, Kondomozo is primarily a response to the racism I faced as a bi-racial person. I wanted to create a creature who is culturally flexible and who personifies self-acceptance. The universe that Kondomozo inhabits is constructed from conscious and subconscious drawings, doodles, text and maps. The palette is inspired by cave paintings. Kondomozo’s simple shape is repeated and juxtaposed against a chaotic, drawn environment. Kondomozoacts as a smooth-skinned, nearly-featureless guide, in a wildly unpredictable and marred universe.”

“Masa” finds inspirations in the work of several artists and the aesthetics of many cultural movements. These influences include: Jean-Michel Basquiat; On Kawara; Yoshitomo Nara; Inka Essenhigh; Mark Manders; Laura Owens; Suh Do-ho; Cy Twombly; Julie Mehrets; Andy Warhol; Jackson Pollock; Gustav Klimt; Noh Theater; Japanese YOUKAI story with Natsuhiko Kyougoku works; KOTODAMA; Super Flat-Takashi Murakami; Otaku culture and Mandala paintings.

Masa believes “that everyone perceives themselves—in some way—as a minority of sorts. It is my hope that Kondomozo may act as an ambassador of “Other-ness” and that people of all backgrounds will feel at home with him, or curious about him.”

JUNG ji “MASA” LEE won 2010 Showcase Juried (1st, Abstract) and Showcase (4th, Abstract) ArtSlant awards, and in 2011 won 2nd, 4th, and 6th place ArtSlant awards in the drawing, mixed media, and painting categories.
Artist Reception at RUMOURS, 2/4/2012, 7:30-10:00 pm

Aside from a few art classes in high school, JACKIE BOLAND has not had any formal training in the arts. As she began to explore and develop her artistic vision at age 14, Jackie’s paintings evolved into her own individual style. She found great influence from many different dynamics including: musicians, spiritual energies, historical figures, the surf, anti-violence, religion, and street art.

Fascinated and inspired by the intricacies of shadows and the drama of light, Jackie has spent hours fixating on the details of her work. Jackie has focused this inspiration primarily on the two mediums of painting and shooting photography. Jackie has described going into every project with a vision and has been proud to exceed even the highest of her own expectations.

The ‘Black & White’ series highlights distinct features of an object, landmark, or figure by accentuating the contrast of light and dark.

The two-tone sharpness of black and white paintings makes the details pop, wrinkles stand out, and overexposed images come alive. A minimalist approach manages to capture the true essence of recognizable characters, objects and landscapes.

Boland’s photography focuses mainly on the surf-and-skate lifestyle of California. A lifelong dream of Jackie’s has been to photograph and paint surfers around the world.

PAVEL VOLYKHINE, who goes by the artistic nom-de-plume ‘PALEV,’ was born on July 30, 1961 in the small town of Ust-Labinsk, in the southern part of Russia that is part of the Krasnodar region. From a very young age, he evinced a fascination for and attraction to art as ex…pressed through listening to classical music and audio books on the radio, devouring art books, and then teaching himself to draw and paint. He started learning to play guitar as a seven-year-old, and a year later started to play solo trumpet with an orchestra. From these early beginnings as a musician he began to develop a passion for music, poetry, and songwriting. He became a singer/songwriter–and eventually a rock star–traveling and performing throughout Russia and Europe during his young adulthood and appearing onstage with some of the biggest touring American musical stars: Carlos Santana, Willie Nelson, Diana Ross, Kris Kristofferson, Paul Young, Paul Horn, Billy Joel and many others. Pavel moved to Los Angeles and continued his music career for a while before switching up and heading to NYC to try his talents at writing, acting, and painting. He found his attraction to the visual arts calling out to him there and found that he had a natural ability that demanded expression. It was during this NYC sojourn that he developed a unique and specific style of his own. Once he picked up a brush and began to express himself on canvas the results were startling. More than five hundred canvases emerged, each vibrant with color, uniquely expressive of his intensely passionate nature, and imaginative in a way that belies his rough and bleak beginnings. Each of these abstract, improvisational paintings is an exciting blend of fearlessness and imagination. Each features astounding color, lyrical sensibility and brushwork, and may be seen as bursts of spiritual energy in which each viewer can find his or her own feelings and story.

However, he is consequently no longer available to cook for events at the Lodge, including for SHOWCASE. Several close dinner options are available, however, for those who want to eat during or before the show.

Kim writes memoir and short fiction and holds a B.F.A. in Dramatic Writing from New York University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles. She has attended various writers’ colonies and conferences including the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and Vermont Studio Center. Kim is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Literature at the University of California at Los Angeles, and she lives with her husband in Los Angeles, California. Kim will be reading from her memoir, First: A Black Girl’s Journey across America’s Great Racial and Class Divide. First is her story about growing up in two different worlds: black and white, poor and rich.

DANIEL WILLIAM CAROTHERS comes from the Rust Belt town of Sharon, PA. With little formal training or schooling (he is a high school drop-out who later earned a G.E.D., and whose love for the arts and literature is largely self-taught), he nonetheless shows a remarkable real talent as a self-trained natural poet. Daniel’s is a most unusual story of how a life turned disastrously upside down found “gold” in the basement of the Los Angeles County jail. When fellow inmates literally took the mattress he slept on out from under him, exclaiming “You gotta give up your mattress for La Raza!,” Daniel’s response was to find a pencil lead and a lunch bag on which to try and write himself out of the county jail system. Instead, he shortly found himself enrolled in the “California Writer’s School,” a.k.a. Delano Prison. His autodidactic study of literature there gave him an Elizabethan/Victorian style of writing poetry. He counts as influences Ben Johnson, Rudyard Kipling, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and William Butler Yeats. Carothers is often quoted as saying “You don’t have to suffer to be a poet, but it helps!” He also took instruction and sustenance from this quote of Ernest Hemingway: “To learn to write, put one word in front of the next.” Critics might be doubtful of him, but with works like “The Rhyme of the Pale Horse” and “Charon’s Wharf,” he reveals himself as a pressurized chunk of carbon become a literary diamond in the rough. He also developed some thespian abilities along the way and has an entertaining and personable declamatory style. He recites all his poetry from memory.

Dr. MELISSA F. ALVARADO is a narrative poet from Nebraska, now living in Los Angeles, who recently performed with the legendary Wanda Coleman and Laurel Ann Bogen. She is a Nebraska Center for Writers author with work published in journals including The Midwest Quarterly, Chum, The Toronto Quarterly, Plains Song Review, as well as in Looking Past (Goldfish Press), and Times of Sorrow, Times of Grace (Backwaters Press). Melissa says her first break occurred when she received the honor for best work from the late Poet Laureate of Nebraska, William Kloefkorn. Melissa holds baccalaureate degrees from the University of Nebraska in both English and Biology, and a Ph.D. in pharmacy from Creighton University, a private, Jesuit college in Nebraska. Tonight, Melissa will be reading and performing poetry from her forthcoming chapbook, It Wasn’t Like In the Movies, a work dedicated to her late niece, Dakota Cierra Christina Moler, who lost her life at the young age of 14 to drowning while heroically trying to save the life of another child.

Her career as a singer includes television variety shows and concert performances throughout the United States and abroad. Originally hailing from Philadelphia, she has emerged on the Los Angeles musical scene as a highly-regarded singer, songwriter, and session vocalist. Her clear, soulful voice is at one moment a commanding powerhouse, and in the next hauntingly exquisite, while yet keeping her audience attuned to the sentiment of the song. Her songs have found their way into many independent films (Gaia, Jack and Bobby) and television shows (Brothers and Sisters, Charmed, Everwood, Felicity, Smallville, CSI–Miami & New York and others as instantly recognizable). Nicole has written and recorded with legendary songwriter Gerry Coffin (‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow,’ ‘Natural Woman’) and Mike Stoller of the legendary songwriting team Leiber & Stoller (’Hound Dog,’ ‘Stand By Me‘). She works regularly with Emmy Award-winning and nominated composers Ernest Troost and Blake Neely on film and television projects, as well as with numerous other composers and songwriters. She has shared the stage and performed with such notable singer/songwriter talents as Colin Hay, Kaki King, Lucinda Williams, Sophie B. Hawkins and Shaun Colvin, as well as having had the great fortune to work and play with some of the best musicians in the world. Tonight she will be performing songs from her latest CD release, the moving Songs of Shiloh, and others. Nicole will be playing and singing between 9:30-10:00 pm.

The B.O.L.T. was formed in late 2008 by charismatic front man and lead singer The Other Deepak, who also functions as songwriter/composer as well as violinist for the band; lead guitarist Brandon Fox, and drummer/percussionist Christo Pellani. With diverse influences and musical backgrounds, including Christo’s time spent touring the world with the Australian pop band Air Supply, the band spent months developing a sound that was unique and palatable for mainstream markets as well as for indie and underground sub-cultures. With several different formations of band members over the ensuing two years, they finally locked in the perfect combination in January, 2011 when they reunited with old friend and bass player Nico Barry. Currently based in Los Angeles, they have also have developed followings in San Diego, Miami, Baltimore, Washington D.C., New York, and other neighboring regions. With influences ranging from Radiohead, Talking Heads, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin, and Coldplay, their sound is defined by magnetic vocal melodies, thought-provoking lyrics, ecstatic rhythms, and the searing sounds of electric violin and guitar. They are also known to write new songs in the moment during a live stage performance, connecting directly with the audience and making each concert a unique and interactive experience. The B.O.L.T. is a band on the rise if not on the run, and they are a lot of fun to see and hear. They should not in any case be missed. The B.O.L.T. will close our show, rockin’ us into the night starting at 10 pm.

(Give our greetings to Alejandro.) We do ask that you do not bring alcohol onto the premises, as The Lodge has a full bar. Please tip Ashley and Pam, your bartenders.
