GRADE 6 BLOG COMPREHENSION 6/09/2017

Mrs. Dowling marched purposefully across the lawn, half leading, half dragging a sorrowful looking, large, shaggy dog. She arrived at the front door of the house and rang the bell several times. Mrs. Winter opened the door, but before she could say anything, the dog twisted free from Mrs. Dowling's grasp and bounded through the open doorway. At the drop of a hat, Smith rushed towards the door.

"He was standing right in the middle of what used to be my flower bed. Look at him! He's still covered in dirt." Mrs. Dowling scowled at the mud covered, gray and black dog who was now watching her from behind her neighbor's legs. "Here's the cost to replace my petunias." She tore a page from a small spiral notepad, handed it to Mrs. Winter, turned, and walked across the Winter's the front lawn, back to her house next door.

Mandy Winter closed the door and turned to look at her son who was on his knees hugging the dog. "We can't afford this, Smith," She said. "He chewed up Andy Martin's cat's dishes, then it was the supplies in Mr. Bailey's shed -- and now this! He keeps getting out of the yard. If we put him on the chain, he barks all night. He chewed up all the linoleum at the back door when we put him in the service porch for the night. I have done everything to try to help you keep him, but he's just impossible."

"He's not! Charlie didn't mean to do that stuff. They just hate him!" Smith shouted. He turned and ran out the back door, Charlie at his heels. He sat on the edge of the brick planter that bordered the Winter's back garden wall. "Charlie, you've got to stop this stuff. She'll send you away," he said. Smith hugged the scruffy dog and buried his face in Charlie's fur.

"Maybe he didn't do it. My dad says you shouldn't convict without hard evidence and my dad's the best lawyer there is." Smith looked up. His best friend Kyle Peterson was peering over the back brick wall that separated their yards.

"Mrs. Dowling saw him this time. She caught him and brought him home."

Kyle climbed over the fence and dropped to the ground. "Maybe something made him do it, Give him the benefit of the doubt" he said.

"Like what?" asked Smith.

"Another dog?" Kyle said. "Mrs. Dowling didn't say anything about another dog. Neither did old Andy Martin when his cat dishes got all torn up. He said Charlie was sure to be the only one who could've done it." argued Smith.

"Another dog could've gotten into the Martin yard. He never said he actually saw Charlie chew up the dishes, did he?"

"But, Charlie always chases his cats if they get up on our fence," Smith said. "And what about the shed? Mr. Bailey said there were muddy paw prints inside his shed when his boxes of dry food supplies for camping were torn up. Charlie was all muddy from the rain that night."

Charlie looked at Smith, sensing something was wrong. He bumped his nose under the boy's arm, begging for an ear scratching.

"Poor Charlie. It's three strikes for him for sure." Smith hugged the dog again. Charlie whimpered at his best friend's obvious distress and started planting slobbering kisses on the boy's cheek with his long, pink tongue.

"But, nobody ever actually saw Charlie, right?" Kyle continued.

"What about this morning? I told you that Mrs. Dowling did. She caught him digging up her flowers -- caught him red handed," Smith exclaimed.

"Maybe she didn't see the whole thing" said Kyle thoughtfully. "Maybe we can prove Charlie has not done it. I've got an idea. Come over to my house. We've got some stuff to put together. This is going to be piece of cake" Kyle got up and started climbing back over the fence. Smith joined him along with Charlie through the backyard gate together.

Kyle's plan depended on a bag of dog kibble, good timing and a lot of luck -- and being able to slip out of their rooms without waking anybody. Their weapons were a flashlight and Kyle's new digital camera.

After everyone was asleep, Smith and Kyle sneaked out and poured the kibble into a pile near their back fence. From the tool shed in his backyard, they had a good view of the kibble. They spread a sleeping bag on the floor and settled in. Charlie lay between them, happily munching dog biscuits Smith had brought to keep him quiet.

Near midnight, Smith yelped in pain. He had Charlie's leash wrapped around his wrist. His arm jerked forward as Charlie leapt up, snarling. Kyle jumped up and helped Smith hold the dog back. Something was coming toward the fence. It was big, dark and furry.

"I'll get my camera," Kyle whispered. "Keep Charlie quiet. Don't scare it away. We've got to get pictures of it. Don't turn on the flashlight until I tell you to."

Smith balanced the flashlight with one hand while trying to control Charlie, who was now standing, teeth bared, with all the fur on his back standing straight up like a porcupine.

Charlie barked and bounded from the shed, dragging Smith behind him. The flashlight went on. Kyle ran after them, clicking the camera as he ran.

Blinded for a moment by the flashlight, the creature looked up from the kibble and made a whirring sound --"r-r-r-r-r-r-r", it snarled. Kyle kept clicking. Smith managed to dig his heels into the lawn and pull Charlie back.

The midnight bandit rose on it's hind feet and stared at them. It was a raccoon almost as big as Charlie. It munched a few more bites of kibble and then calmly turned and disappeared into the hedge without a sound.

"Wow! That's what Charlie's been after. He's huge! He's the culprit. We've got proof now that it wasn't Charlie." Smith said.

"Do you two know what time it is? What in the world are you two doing out there?" Kyle's dad yelled from an upstairs window.

"No sweat, Dad," Kyle called back, beaming with pride and waving his camera aloft. "I'm clearing an innocent client. Just like you would."

A Boy Who Hated Homework

Harry hated homework. He played cricket and football and even computer games. But homework? No, Sir! His teachers told him,"Harry!Do your homework or you won't learn a thing." And it's true; sometimes he didn't know the simplest things. But he found homework so boring!

One day while playing football, he saw a cat playing with something shiny. He shooed the cat away and picked up the tiny object. It was a tiny little remote! It had just one button. Harry pressed the button. Poof! A tiny little man appeared in front of him. He was as tiny as a mouse! Harry was shocked; he almost threw away the remote.

"Oh please, please don't do that. I'll do anything, save me from the cat! I'll grant you a wish, I promise you that." Now Harry was clever, Harry was wise. At once, Harry decided and told the little man,"You've got to do my homework for the whole year." The little man's face looked as dark as a rain cloud. He shook his fists and jumped up and down, but Harry was as firm as a rock- the little man had to do his homework.

They started that evening. In the beginning everything went fine. The little man had such a lovely handwriting and he wrote so fast. Harry was sure all his problems were solved. But soon there was a problem. The little man hardly knew any words! He didn't know the meaning of even simple words.

"Oh get me the dictionary, Harry, please do, or better still, look up the meaning, why don't you?" So Harry helped him with spellings and meanings. But that wasn't all! The little man had no idea of multiplication. "What are these tables", he yelled, "I can't multiply, divide or even add! Harry, please help me, now you are a good lad!"

So Harry helped him with Math. Now the little man came from another country, so he had no idea of history or geography or even science. Harry worked hard day and night. The little man knew nothing, so Harry helped him do the homework. Harry worked hard the whole year. On the last day of the year, the little man quietly slipped away. Harry got A's in all the subjects. His classmates were amazed; his teachers smiled and were full of praise. And his parents? They wondered what had happened to Harry. He had completely changed. He cleaned his room, did his chores, and was cheerful, never rude. You see, Harry still thinks he'd made that man do all his homework. But I'll share a secret, just between you and me. It wasn't the little man; Harry had done it himself!

Read the passage and answer the questions given below:

The Incredible Machine

Everyone has a favorite attraction at an amusement park, and I am no different. However, unlike most people who seem to prefer rollercoasters, my favorite ride is a little gentler. Every time I go to Coney Island, Navy Pier, or the Santa Monica Pier, I absolutely have to ride the Ferris wheel.

The Ferris wheel is simple and yet also quite complex. That is, riding it is easy, but how it works is complicated. A series of carts are attached to a wheel, which is attached to a rim. That rim rotates vertically around an axis, and gravity keeps the carts upright. As simple as the ride seems, only advanced engineers can make safe and fun Ferris wheels.

What It Lacks in Thrills…

While the Ferris wheel is not as thrilling as a rollercoaster, it is still very exciting. The fact of being high in the air makes it so much more entertaining than a lot of rides. I mean, how often do you hang from that high up in daily life?

Nevertheless, I have to admit, I don't seek Ferris wheels out because of their excitement. Rather, I find them very relaxing. At the top of the Ferris wheel, you get beautiful sights of the park. You also get a sense of calm that you don't get in the hustle and bustle of the park below.

Additionally, Ferris wheels are also gorgeous to look at when they are lit up at night. In fact, the original Ferris wheel was designed as much to be seen as to be ridden.

It happened at the World's Fair

The first Ferris wheel was made by and named after George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. He designed it for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. It was the tallest attraction there, standing 264 feet high.

However, visitors to the fair were impressed by the size of the ride as well as the mechanics of it. In 1893, anything that was not turned by hand was considered a sight to see. And the wheel, which was a machine, was truly incredible to see. Further, as one visitor put it, the wheel was amazing because it seemed to be missing support. That is, it did not look like it could stand on its own. And yet it did and even rotated!

They Keep Reaching Higher and Higher

Ferris wheel technology has only improved since then. Most of today's Ferris wheels are much larger than that first one. The largest in the world is the "Singapore Flyer," which stands slightly taller than twice what Ferris's did!

Today, the Ferris wheel is the most common amusement park ride. But that does not mean you should take them for granted. Instead, be thankful for Ferris' invention. The next time you're at an amusement park, don't just look up at the impressive wheel in the sky on your way to a newer attraction. Take it for a spin!

Diving is my passion, my life. I have been doing it since I was a kid, starting out with somersaults on the trampoline, and graduating to the springboard of our neighborhood pool. I was taught by my dad, who had been a diver at the University of Pennsylvania.

Later, I attended Pennsylvania State University, where I became a platform diver. A 10-meter platform is as high as a three-storey building. You hit the water like a bullet. My first time on the platform, it took me a half hour standing at the edge before I got the nerve to dive. I have never looked back since.

After I graduated, I moved to Florida to train with legendary diving coach, Ron O'Brien. Coach O'Brien said I stood a chance of making the US Olympic team that would compete in the Barcelona summer games.

Training is grueling. The impact of hitting the water at high velocity again and again takes its toll on the body. But all the training was worth it. When I was named to the US Olympic Diving team, I called back home immediately: "I made it, Dad !"

Though I had good news, Dad had bad. He was scheduled for open-heart surgery. My first impulse was to skip the Olympics so I could stay with him. Dad would not hear of it. "After all, Mare," he reassured me, "isn't this what I got you started on ? Remember ?"

Through all my years of competition, one image I kept close was that of my father bending me into the proper dive position on the springboard when I was little.

Now, hugging me goodbye before I left for Barcelona, my father said, "I'll be watching you on TV, Mare." Dad, who had taken all seven of us children to church every Sunday, kept a strong faith that would sustain him through whatever lay ahead. On the plane, I prayed and received the strong impression he would be all right.

Soon I was faced with another dilemma. The opening ceremonies were scheduled to take place between 8.00 pm and 1.00 am the night before my first event. I would get only a few hours' sleep if I marched with the other US Olympians. "We can always watch it on TV back at the Olympic village," Coach said.

I recalled Dad's words: "I'll be watching you on TV." I had got word he had come through his surgery nicely and was recovering well. It would make him very proud to see me with the other Americans. So I marched, the only platform diver at the ceremonies.

After the next day's competition, I was in second place. My coach said I was "a dark horse for a medal". The Russian and Chinese divers had been heavily favored. At 29, I had been written off by most people as too old to win. "Maybe you should march before all your events," Coach joked.

But my next-to-last dive was a disaster and plunged me into fifth place. I had one final shot at a medal. As I stood on the platform ready to take my last dive, I paused a bit longer than usual. The announcement came over the loudspeaker. "Mary Ellen Clark of the United States, doing a backward one-and-a-half somersault with two-and-a-half twists.

I stepped up to the edge of the platform and turned my back to the water. With a quick prayer and an incredible sense of lightness, I was airborne, arcing out over the pool, twisting and tumbling, the Barcelona skyline flashing by. A micro-instant later, I ripped into the water. I knew I had nailed the dive. When I shot back to the surface, Coach O'Brien was yelling, "Bronze, Mary Ellen, bronze!"

As I stood on the awards platform to accept my medal, I knew Dad was watching. This is for you, Dad, I thought. What an incredible feeling!

It has been my lifelong dream to play on the middle school basketball team. I began playing basketball when I was in the fourth standard. My older brother taught me to play. He is three years older than I am. He practices with me every afternoon. And always encourages me before a match.

This year I started sixth standard. The school basketball team selections were announced. Last month. Every day since the announcement, my brother has helped me prepare for the team tryouts. The selections were held last Saturday morning. Twenty-three students from my class tried out for the team. The team only has spaces for fifth sixth standard students. I know I worked as hard as I could to prepare for the selections. I felt like I had a good chance but I was still nervous on Saturday night and Sunday morning, waiting for the team list to be posted. On Sunday afternoon, my parents took me to the school to see who had made it to the team. I was so happy when I saw my name on the list! It is so exciting to be part of the team.

When we left the school, my parents said we would go out for pizza. It would just be a little family celebration in my honor. They called my brother, and he met us at the restaurant. He walked in with a big smile on his face. He was really proud of me. My parents were very proud too, although they warned me about not neglecting my studies and making sure I did all my homework every day. They do not need to worry about those things. I'll work very hard to stay on the team.

       The child who saw Santa Claus

Once upon a time, there was a child who wanted to see Santa Claus. 'I am old enough now to see Santa Clause,' the child said. 'I am seven years old. Show him to me, mother,' he begged.

'Oh, I cannot show you,' the child's mother said.' I can tell you about Santa Claus but I cannot show you his face.' 'May I go out and look for Santa Claus, myself, then?',the child asked. 'Yes, you may go out and look for Santa Claus,' the child's mother said, and she brought him his warm coat and cap and his mittens (gloves). 'But do not go too far away from home,' she added. At the gate, the child met his grandfather. He was a very old man with white hair and spectacles. Now, his grandfather's arms were full of fat packets. One packet looked as if it were a toy fire engine and another packet looked as if it were a mask, and a ball and gloves.

'Where are you going?'the child's grandfather asked. 'I am going to see Santa Claus,' the child answered.

The grandfather smiled until his blue eyes shone(looked bright and shiny). 'Will you know Santa Claus when you see him?' he asked. 'Oh, yes,' the child said. 'Santa Claus is an old man with white hair, and twinkling (sparkling) eyes, and a nose like a cherry-' but the child suddenly stopped. 'Oho!' his grandfather laughed, and the child listened in surprise. He had never heard such a merry laugh before. The child saw some horses coming his way but did not know which way to go. He might have been hurt, but a hand took hold of his and helped him safely across the street. He looked up at the man, who wore a long red cloak. 'Who are you?' the child asked. 'One of the christmas helpers,' the man said. 'I stand here at the street corner and ring a christmas bell. People who pass by give me money for the poor people I help. And where are you going?' he asked the child.'I am going to see Santa Claus,' the child answered. 'Will you know Santa Claus when you see him?' the man asked. 'Oh , yes,' the child said , ' Santa Claus wears a long red cloak-' But then the child stopped...wondering.

A little farther on, there was an old man, sitting in a shop, and making toys. The toyman turned to the child who was just going out of the shop. 'Where are you going?' the toymaker asked the child. 'I am going to see Santa Claus,' the child answered. 'Will you know Santa Claus when you see him?' the toyman asked. Oh , yes,' the child said, 'Santa Claus will be making toys-' but he did not say any more. He got down from his bench and put a box of little wooden animals in the child's hands.'Merry Christmas to you from Santa Claus!' said the toyman, as the child thanked him and went on, wondering. The child went back home and his mother was very glad to have him back.'Did you see Santa Claus?' she asked. 'Oh , yes!' the child answered. 'I saw him when I met Grandfather, and I saw him standing in a red cloak at the street corner and helping the poor. I saw him in the toyman's shop. I saw Santa Claus everywhere,' the child said.

Students visited Dr.Bhau Daji Lad Museum which was a treasure trove for the learners where they learnt about the rich and diverse culture and heritage of India.They got good knowledge about the birds and animals and about their distinct features and their surroundings at the Byculla zoo. The sight of Penguins at such close proximity, surrounded by ice and water was a sight to behold. The trip was not only entertaining but a great learning experience for the young learners.

The Silent Shepherd

Aaron lay close to his father to stay warm in the cold night air. Nonetheless, a shiver went through Aaron. He wanted desperately to be like his father, able to call to the sheep. Many times, he tried to call to them, but the words never came. He only could make strange sounds that no one could understand. Sometimes, Aaron would see tears in his father's eyes when he tried

to speak. He felt that his father was disappointed in him. He would never be a shepherd.

"Aaron, why are you so restless? It's time to sleep," Aaron's father said as he stroked his son's hair.

Aaron tried to sleep, but all he could see was the sadness in his father's eyes. If only he could talk! His father would be so pleased with him.

After a while, Aaron's eyes grew heavy and he fell asleep. He dreamed that he was able to speak. When he called his sheep, they followed after him. His father's eyes were free from tears.

Suddenly, Aaron was awakened by a brilliant light in the heavens. Aaron's father held Aaron close to him.

They both huddled together in fear.

An angel appeared to them and said," Do not be afraid. I bring you news of great joy. The Christ Child has been born tonight in Bethlehem. You will find Him wrapped in a blanket, lying in a manger."

Then the angel was joined by a multitude of other angels. They watched in amazement as the angels sang, praising God. Then the angels returned to heaven.

Aaron couldn't wait to see the Christ Child. He tugged at his father's sleeve and pointed towards Bethlehem.

"Let us go to Bethlehem and see the Christ Child."

In great excitement, they hurried to Bethlehem with their sheep following behind them.

When they found the manger, Aaron was afraid to come inside. He felt he wasn't worthy enough to see the Christ Child. With all his heart, he wanted to say happy birthday to the Christ Child but he knew he wouldn't be able to say even a single word to Him.

Aaron's father, seeing the fear on his son's face said,"Don't be afraid. Our Savior wants your love not your words."

Aaron held his father's hand. They knelt in

adoration before the Christ Child. As Aaron looked upon the Christ Child, all of his fear left him. How he wanted to be able to wish the Christ Child happy birthday. Suddenly Aaron felt his words ready to burst forth.

"Happy Birthday!" Aaron shouted to the Christ

Child. Tears of joy came to his father's eyes and he embraced his son.

"I love you, Father," Aaron exclaimed.

"I love you, Son."

Overjoyed, Aaron and his father went back to their fields. Aaron spent the rest of his life telling everyone about the birth of the Christ Child and how he once had been a silent shepherd.
