Arriving in Germany

Whew, what a journey! The overnight flight from the US was long, but uneventful and actually quite enjoyable. We landed in Germany an hour early, thanks to a tailwind. That’s usually good news, but that meant another hour we would have to stay active to keep ourselves awake.

On the not-quite-full flight, we were at the very back of the plane. Everyone had a tv screen, which offered some needed brain candy at first. E and O eventually nodded off and got in a few hours of sleep. N had a hard time separating from the tv screen. The food was horrible. Brad had selected “vegan” for us, which is what we usually prefer but it was really bad. They served us some sort of curry, and well, none of us like curry. Breakfast was just as bad and basically some sort of granola bar straight outta the woods.

The landing was smooth and we quickly debarked to find the closest bathroom. The bathrooms have some differences, so E moved cautiously. I remember doing the same on my first encounter.

We then waded through customs. That is always a bit nerve-wracking, not knowing how we will be received. We’ve also watched too many episodes of To Catch a Smuggler. Not that we are smugglers, but I know I wear my emotions on my sleeve and I was a bit nervous. If you watch the show, then you know that is a major red flag for agents.

Once through customs, we had to get food. It had been too long since we had eaten and we were some hangry people. We stopped at a café in the airport and grabbed some fresh pretzels and a couple of lattes. That gave us the boost we needed to navigate the next couple of hours.

Our last moments at the airport were spent outside, enjoying the morning sun and taking in our first impressions of the culture while we waited for our driver to arrive. We were a tired bunch, but so relieved to have the journey and the whirlwind that was the previous two months behind us. It felt good to be home.
