Are you sick of those ordinary Oscar office pools? Tired of only guessing the top 6 or 8 categories for the Academy Awards? Let your inner-movie geek shine with Bowl the Perfect Oscar Score (aka Oscar Bowling).

Try to nail 300 points on the 2018 Academy Awards.

This is a confidence list.

There are 24 categories.

How to play

Pick your winners in all 24 categories. Then, give each winner a confidence score. Your most confident pick gets 24 points, second most confident gets 23 points, third most confident gets 22 points, and eventually your least confident pick gets 1 point.

This is perfect for Oscar parties, because the lead keeps changing. The winner is the one with the most points at the end. A perfect score is 300. If there is a tie (there never is a tie), then the winner is the one with the most points in these three categories combined (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress).

You’ll eventually be able to say things like … “Once, in 2024, I got a 297 Oscar score.” Or, “I know a guy who once hit 300 back in 2015.” Yeah, you’ll be saying these things. Trust me.

Previous Scores
2017 – 226
2016 – 246
2015 – 208
2014 – 271
2013 – 257
Tired of only guessing the top 6 or 8 categories for the Academy Awards? Let your inner-movie geek shine with Bowl the Perfect Oscar Score (aka Oscar Bowling).

Try to nail 300 points on the 2017 Academy Awards.

2016 – 246
2015 – 208
2014 – 271
2013 – 257
2012 – 256
2011 – 246

If you don’t fully understand the rules, here are my Oscar predictions below.

Landline

Plot (courtesy of Sundance):

U.S.A., 2017, 100 min., color

Two sisters come of age in ’90s New York when they discover their dad’s affair—and it turns out he’s not the only cheater in the family. Everyone still smokes inside, no one has a cell phone, and the Jacobs finally connect through lying, cheating, and hibachi.

DIRECTOR: Gillian Robespierre

SCREENWRITERS: Elisabeth Holm, Gillian Robespierre

PRINCIPAL CAST: Jenny Slate, John Turturro, Edie Falco, Abby Quinn, Jay Duplass, Finn Wittrock

Review: With Robespierre’s feature debut, Obvious Child, there was a singular path which was to follow Donna (Slate) through her path to an abortion. It was a fantastic film with a specific focus. Landline is set in the ’90s and is a little messy. This works quite well because besides reminding us about pay phones and eyebrow piercings, it’s about infidelity. It doesn’t get much messier than that.

Dana (Slate) is engaged to Ben (Duplass). She’s having cold feet and drifts to a former crush. Dana’s dad, Alan (Turturro), is writing beautiful poetry to someone other than his wife (Falco). Stuck in this messy family is Ali (Quinn) who is up to the task of playing off of the extraordinary charismatic Slate, as sisters who are reconnecting through family mistakes. Honestly, I love Slate. She has such a loving freedom on screen. She snorts, and charms me. She cheats, and (almost) charms me. There are a few moments when I want more comeuppance in this film, but the journey of this family can ring true for a variety of people, not just New Yorkers, and not just those that are products of the ’90s.

Thankfully this film is stronger than the annoying subject of infidelity. There are plenty of powerful moments that can occur because of cheating partners, but it always has the inevitable selfishness and pain. Robespierre handles it like Slate acts, with a comfortable casualness. This isn’t to say the film takes cheating lightly, but Robespierre continues to play difficult subjects authentically.

It’s always nice to find a new director you can trust, and be excited for the next one. Robespierre is there for me now after two films. Hopefully, she keeps bringing Slate along for the ride.

Score: 7

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore

Plot (courtesy of Sundance):

U.S.A., 2016, 97 min., color

When a depressed woman is burglarized, she finds a new sense of purpose by tracking down the thieves, alongside her obnoxious neighbor. But they soon find themselves dangerously out of their depth against a pack of degenerate criminals.

DIRECTOR/SCREENWRITER: Macon Blair

PRINCIPAL CAST: Melanie Lynskey, Elijah Wood, David Yow, Jane Levy, Devon Graye

Review: It feels like director/writer Blair went to school when he was working with director/writer Jeremy Saulnier. This is a wonderful thing for the film title that you should say over and over again until you officially have it memorized, I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore. It is such a strong start for a director that it’s hard not to think about his influences. Thankfully, that can be after enjoying the hell out of this movie.

Everyone’s favorite (I swear I haven’t met anyone at Sundance who doesn’t light up when you say her name), Lynskey, gives an incredibly strong performance as Ruth. She’s a nurse who is sick of the assholes in the world. The film starts with all of the little things that do (or should) drive us nuts about other people happening over and over again to her. You know it’s just a matter of time before she snaps. She joins up with Tony (Wood) after throwing dog shit in his direction. Don’t worry, he deserved it. This is the kind of character that seems perfect for Wood, though I can’t say I’ve seen this side of him. He’s angry, remorseful, shy, Christian, and ready to punch. Tony ends up being the motivation for Ruth to not take anyone’s crap anymore. She doesn’t realize the darkness that truly lurks near her.

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore keeps turning up a notch, with Blair getting great performances from actors I didn’t recognize. There are guns, knives, snakes, and at the center Ruth is having a push and pull with whether she wants to be in this deep or is being dragged down.

When a coach has an assistant or former player do well, the coach is referenced. Blair might have this happen for a while with Saulnier. Who the hell cares? This is good art, and a very strong directorial debut. It’s also a title I will (hopefully) remember.

Score: 8

Ingrid Goes West

Plot (courtesy of Sundance):

U.S.A., 2016, 97 min., color
A young woman becomes obsessed with an Instagram “influencer” and moves to Los Angeles to try and befriend her in real life.

DIRECTOR: Matt Spicer
SCREENWRITERS: Matt Spicer, David Branson Smith
PRINCIPAL CAST: Aubrey Plaza, Elizabeth Olsen, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Wyatt Russell, Billy Magnussen

Review: The films about being obsessed with social media won’t stop. They will keep getting liked, shared and redone. Thankfully, a quality filmmaker, screenwriter and cast will always be able to shine a proper light on the subject and that is exactly what Ingrid Goes West is able to pull off.

Ingrid (Plaza) has just lost her mom and attaches herself on Instagram to anyone who will give her a hint of reason. That leads her to Los Angeles and clinging to Taylor who leads the perfect online life. It’s easy to see where we are eventually heading with stalking, but the film doesn’t feel weighted down by inevitably, instead it keeps finding wonderful commentary on our society through these well thought out characters (instead of big speeches on the compulsion of an online life).

Plaza is perfect as the Single White Female in the making. More importantly, we don’t ever get too much beyond the surface of Taylor, which is the point. She is not nearly as obsessive as Ingrid, but it feels like they are dealing with the same problem of living an authentic life, or at least having the perception of one. Ezra (Russell) is the LA artist married to Taylor. He sees the flaws of where his life with Taylor is leading, but grabs a bottle, drinks, and continues to go along for the ride. Stealing the show is Jackson as Dan, who continues to prove he’s an actor who will be around for a long time, and not because Ice Cube is his dad. Dan is a landlord/screenwriter with his own infatuation, which is Batman. He is the most present person in the film, but still distances himself from reality. There are many toss away lines from Jackson that become the funniest moments of the film.

Any sort of stalker film has the eventual problem of the “fall from grace” moment, but Ingrid Goes West deals with it quite well. Taylor’s brother Nicky shows up and escalates the crazy. The ending gets a little messy when you start to add up Ingrid’s money situation, if police should be involved, or how this all could work out, but I was truly satisfied when walking away from this film.

If you have thought, rethought, typed, deleted, then finally posted something only to wait for the approval of a “like” and felt true joy from that, then Ingrid Goes West is a movie you should sit with for an hour and a half.

Score: 7

I have been thrilled to bring readers to the Remedial Film School at Film School Rejects.

Here are a select few of the films that notable film personalities and critics have had me watch…

Drew McWeeny chooses Dead Man.

Drew McWeeny of Hitfix.com is our first guest, and he chose Dead Man, saying it somehow is connected to the Dreamworks animated film Home, which opens March 27.

It’s time to get things started.

McWeeny explains: So why Dead Man?

When I have the entire sum total of every movie Jeff Bayer has not seen to choose from, and I choose Dead Man, it’s a fair question. What makes that movie special? Why should that film be seen by everyone, much less by Bayer specifically?

For one thing, when I bitch in public about feeling let down by Johnny Depp’s choices for the last decade, Dead Man is the best example of why I consider his current work so problematic. Jim Jarmusch’s meditative joke about the death of the American Mythic West is full of tremendously talented actors playing all sorts of roles, and none of that works unless the figure at the center of things can hold it all together. Depp is tremendous as William Blake, a man who feels completely lost and helpless as he wanders this blasted hellscape.

Amy Nicholson chooses All About Eve.

“Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.” (Nicholson explains): All About Eve is hit-the-brakes fantastic, a movie so good that you shouldn’t watch anything else until you cue it on Netflix. For film fans who are just starting to get into the classic Hollywood canon, or have heard that Davis is one of the best actresses this city ever had, this is where to start.

Davis plays Margo Channing, a theater star as big and frightening on Broadway as she herself was in pictures. She’s got mean quips and big moments — the infamous, “Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.” But she’s also vulnerable, loving, and calculatedly restrained. In her first scene at an awards banquet for an ingenue she despises, Davis channels her disdain just by blinking. And if you’re a Gone Girl fan, listen to Anne Baxter’s scheming Eve Harrington — you can hear where Rosamund Pike borrowed her numbed line readings.

Vince Mancini chooses Seconds.

“What kind of man is he? There’s grace in the line and color, but it doesn’t emerge pure.” (Mancini explains): I first saw Seconds in college, in a film class taught by Jean-Pierre Gorin, a guy who used to work with Godard in the ’70s. But at the time, I knew him only as “JP,” an insane Frenchman who’d waltz into class late, chugging a massive latte, who would openly ogle students and was given to pronouncements like “Sir, you are a cretin, you are nevair alload to speak een my class again,” and “Teacheeng eez not about being bored, or boring, eez about the the grand clowning act of child molestation.” Needless to say, I loved that man. I didn’t share his tastes on all films, but one he showed that always stuck with me was Seconds.

The easiest way to describe Seconds is that it’s like American Beauty meets The Matrix, but better than both. It’s a trippy sci-fi film about something so grounded — suburban ennui. If you think about it in terms of its historical context (it came out in 1966), it’s one of the best expressions of the existential angst that American life produced in the ’50s and early ’60s. America in the ’50s was the most comparatively wealthy country in the history of the world. You could earn enough to have more than you ever even knew you wanted, just from working at a factory. People were prospering beyond their wildest dreams, yet a lot of them looked around and thought, “All that striving … for this? Twin beds, a fancy washer/dryer, and bridge on the weekends?”
