The inworld version is not ready yet, but should be in a fortnight. It will no longer be an inworld newspaper, but more of a magazine style format. It will also be available in notecard format for easier reading.

Teen SL News

By next friday i will of started the blog Teen SL news, which will be hosted by blogger for now. It will be free to read on the website, with an optional version in game that you can buy, which is still being designed.

I need writers. Although i will be writing most of the articles, residents will want to hear from lots of teens, not just me. Many jobs are available.

Writers
- The longer you've been a resident the better.
- Will be hiring almost every one who applies.
- You'll need an example of your writing or meet me for a short interview.
- You get paid per story, and will be told how much you will get paid after you contact me.

This is probably my last contribution to Second Life. I was in a Skype call earlier this evening, and I was reminded that I created some really useful textures. Ask around for "Dolus's Box of Textures That Are Interesting," and you can get them.

I'm done with Second Life. I find nothing to bring me back into it. As my friend Cirr put it, it's like a rotting fruit covered in sugar -- they just keep adding newer and newer stuff to it, but at its core, it's done.

Until Linden Lab can fix their problems, of which there are too many to list, listen to their userbase and follow what they ask, and stop adding new features, they will continue to lose their valuable users, and their current users will grow more and more disgusted with them.

Censorship is the first step to tyranny, they say. When I look at the blog and see the the vast majority of posts are about problems with the grid, and that all of the comments on them are locked, I have a serious issue.

Simply put, I'm disgusted with Linden Lab, and by extension, Second Life.

"Dolus's Box of Textures That Are Interesting" is what you want to ask for. You're not getting it from me. As of last month, the account Dolus Naumova is cancelled. I have no alts.

Good luck. And if it does get any better, the people whose opinions I trust will let me know.

Sad to see Dolus go... but ironically i have just come back to teen second life after a long absence due to finishing exams :) Hope not to much has changed.

How does it work?!: Devil Duck automatically detects the sims water level, and then adjusts to it. Once it's rezzed, it will explain, in easy terms, how it's set up. The owner gets to decide where the duck swims, within a rectangle. Then it randomly swims

Camp GK
Camp GK, for me, has finally come to an end officialy as i received my check and certificate through the post yesterday. I say it's the end, because that was the last camp GK related thing that needed to be done. I plan to use the money to go to a concert and get a new iPod. I'm not one for saving up :) The whole GK team know i'm happy to help out if they need it. I'm sure i'll do projects with them in the future :)

Password Reset

So after 2 trys, (i think), i managed to get the correct information for my main Avatar, Tecno Tiger, to change my password back to normal. Unfortunately, i wasn't as careful filling in details for 2 of my alts, one with the great name Expensive Television! So looks like i'll have to ring LL on Monday. This is all because, for some reason i'm not to sure about yet, LL has reset every residents password.

A Virtual Maze, Dealing with a Real Life Problem

I landed at the entrance of the Camp GK maze. After hearing so much about it, I couldn't wait to enter.

The entrance has several snapshots on the walls of others that have been in the maze, made it to the end, and taken a snapshot of themselves wearing a ‘Slavery Still Exists’ shirt. There is also a plaque with credits and a sign informing residents to enter mouselook when going into the maze.

I entered, and went down the only path I could find that wasn’t a dead end. The first thing I saw was an image of a young, female child curled up against a wall hugging a teddy bear looking distressed. As I continued down the path, another photo of a young female child showed her against a wall, crying into her hands, curled up like a ball. A few feet away was another picture of a person caged.

I started to feel a little upset, beginning to realise that this was quite a serious issue, even if it is shaped into a game like a maze.

Once again I saw a picture frame, this time containing a poster about Child Pornography. "Behind every picture there’s pain" it read. It must be a lot worse for children than adults enduring the Sex Trafficking industry, I thought, as I continued to search through the maze.

After turning into a dead end, I went back and found another poster reading, "STOP! Child pornography on the internet" and some text telling me that in the year 2000, 1.8 million children were exploited in prostitution or pornography worldwide. This made me think, right now as I go through this maze, someone on the Internet is probably downloading child pornography, and a child somewhere is probably being exploited for prostitution.

It was now imprinted on my mind that this Child Sex Trafficking is a real problem, happening in the real world, and I felt something needed to be done.

I continued to walk happily through the maze until… Uh oh, I was stuck. What looked to be a dead end was actually a door. It said, "Almost half way through this maze, but you can't go until you get through this challenge.” Then bellow it, “Click here for the question.”

Guess what I did next?! That’s right, I clicked it!

"Child sex trafficking is what form of business? A. Organized Crime B. Pornography C. Selling Drug.” I went with A, Organized Crime, and the door opened for five seconds, dropped me a “Slavery still exists” button .

I went through to the second half of the maze and continued on my journey.

I saw lots of images that made me think. They helped me realise that people are suffering all the time. "Child pornographers also take a child’s innocence, self esteem and dignity”, read a poster near to the end of this section. The path started to get foggy, and I came to a door, again like the previous one, but this time with different text.

"Click the door in front of you. After answering the question correctly, you may proceed to maze # 2." I clicked, and was given this following question, "Besides American citizens, which other groups is exploited in the US sex industry? A. Eastern Europeans and Asians, B. Latin Americans, C. All of the above.”

I went with C, and the door opened for five seconds, giving me enough time to run through and make it to a hallway leading to the second maze, whilst receiving a “Slavery Still Exists” ball and chain.

"In Sri Lanka, children often become the prey of sexual exploiters through friends and relatives. The prevalence of boys in prostitution here is strongly related to foreign tourism”, read some text accompanied by a photo of a child in the foreground and men in the background, standing in a line. From following images I saw in the second maze, I started to think that the second maze was focused more on young boys rather then female children in the first maze. The next quote backed up my theory. "In El Salvador, one- third of the sexually exploited children between 14 and 17 years of age are boys."

The second maze so far had been more informative with facts and figures than the first, still with plenty of images as well. Also a bit trickier to get round. Maybe it's supposed to be? Is each maze of the three mazes harder?
"Mexico is the No. 1 country providing sex trafficking to the United States, accounting for the majority of federal trafficking cases." Halfway again! Another dead end door. I clicked for the question.

"How do traffickers trick and trap economically poor children into the commercial sex trade? A. Promise of freedom from parents. B. Promise of money or a good job. C. All of the above.”

I went with C and received a “Slavery still exits” wristband. Lots of information was everywhere on this second half of the second maze. I learnt that 1/3 of the prostitutes in Thailand were under 18.

Carrying on, I went deeper into the maze, for quite a while, only to lead to a dead end. I found it hard to retrace my steps. I felt trapped. Although there is no way I could ever feel like the victims of the Sex Trafficking industry without going through it, this did give me a small idea of what it feels like: going deeper and deeper through deceit and lies, trying to take everything life throws at them on the chin, until it's gone too far and they’re stuck.

Finally making it out, past some more images of children who have suffered, some crying, I made it to another door. Clicking it, I received this question, “How many people including children are trafficked across international borders each year? A 700,000 B. 50,000 C. 90,000.”

I went with A and once again got the question correct, receiving a really cool “Slavery still exists” freedom dove.

Avoiding two dead ends, I entered the third maze. I was happy to see the first image was a group of children smiling together; it made me remember that Child Sex Trafficking is a problem happening to a lot of children, but not all children. What happened in the third maze next was really weird. I got completely lost; there were no pictures or text anywhere. I kept walking around aimlessly for a while, then somehow, without passing the half way door, got to the end door of the third maze. Spooky!

True or false the door asked this time. “If all commercial sexual exploitation is stopped, some children will be robbed of their means to survive.”

Going with false, I came to another hallway and received a “Slavery still exists T-shirt.”

Then I came upon a cool looking teleporter, which I right-clicked and was teleported.

I arrived at a monument, over 500m up in the sky. There was a donation box, where I donated some money, using the in-game currency called Lindens, and then signed the petition on a website against child sex trafficking, using the link an object in-world had given me. There was a promotional pane for holymeatballs.org, a website/blog run by Global Kids. Putting on the freebies I had won through the maze, I took a snapshot of myself and sent it to Rafi GKid, as a note card informed me to do.

It had been a good adventure. I enjoyed myself, learned a lot, and most importantly, helped raise money to fight Child Sex Trafficking.

It's sad to know, but Camp Global Kids is now officially over. All of the participants in the camp, including me, had great fun taking part. It came to my attention, after a blog post on Holymeatballs, that certificates participants were given in world were also being sent home to them, along with the $100 incentive for taking part. " The reason Global Kids is sending out a RL certificate, in addition to the in-world one that we handed out to people at the last day's "closing ceremonies" is for a couple of reasons." Lori told me, "We thought it would be really special to have a real world memento of the Camp Global Kids experience. Something tangible that you could tack to your wall if you wanted, and that when you looked at it, it would make you smile and remember what a great experience you had We wanted to give you a real world representation of your achievement, especially since it makes the achievement so much more legitimately." Lori continued to say, "Recognized by people who might not be familiar with Teen Second Life or our Global Kids program in it, and thus might not understand that even though the program was virtual, your achievement is real". Lori was then asked if the certificates were going to be signed, "It's funny you should ask about the signature, because I JUST finished signing the stack of certificates that are almost ready to send out " The cool GKid went on to tell me that other GKids who have signed the certificates include Rafi and Zach. Unfortunately Mercury wasn't able to sign them due to being a remote intern, but Lori says there may be someone signing them in his absence. I then went on to ask the owner of Private Island Mecca, Tin Bling, if he thought RL certificates were a good idea. "I think the certificates are a great idea. (I personally can’t wait to get mine). And the stipends are nice added bonus: P I am sure some colleges will look at something on that order as a good thing, like volunteer work. Also, it is something nice to add to a job resume" Every participant i have seen have said how excited they are to receive a real certificate for taking part in a virtual program, and it's nice that an organization like Global Kids will take the time to do this.

Sorry I haven't posted for a while...
I've been busy with Coursework and blogging for http://holymeatballs.org. To go over everything i've been up to since I last posted would take a while, so i'll go over key points. I've taken some footage for the movie tralier contest, created a car as seen in picture, taken part in Camp GK, started on a website about my SL and i've been MOD'ing the forums. Also I hosted a building class last week. More frequent posting soon!

Events MG Only? Not Any More!!
Teens can now use the inworld event client. Held back before as MG events where appearing there, we are now able to post partys, classes, more or less anything we want!

300,000 Residents!

Ok, LL is starting to get what they want, allot of residents. The problem is that "304,160" is just a figure of accounts that have been made. With the new registration process, people can go crazy wih making alt accounts, as mentioned and demonstrated in a Second Cast episode. Some of these accounts aren't active, and LL can see which ones these are, but people can still log in to here account and then there alt so they appear as active on both and we still don't know how many people acctually play.

Another problem with the latest registration process is the fact that there is no authentication. These no point kidding our selevs,there are adults on the TG, and there are teens on the MG. The latest update, from what i hear, now has a device that sends LL a red flag if a computer logs into a TG and MG account. So they think they can catch people out this way? If there doing it by the computers MAC address, then the user can force there computer to use a fake one. If it's a pedo, they will only want to log on to the TG anyway, so this device won't work.

Lindens have enfourced the fact that grid hopping is a really bad thing to do, but now they've unlocked the door for anyone who wants to go in to the other grid. They need to do something to sort this out!

Details About Camp Global Kids!
This post shares some details about Camp Global Kids.

What's Camp Global Kids all about?

Global Kids, a New York City-based educational organization, will be hosting a free summer camp program within Teen Second Life. The program will involve exciting leadership-development activities and fun workshops focused on global issues.
The program will be run by Global Kids staff who have been trained in the fields of youth development, global education and digital media as well as by teens active in Global Kids leadership programs.

When is this happening?

The summer program will last for 4 weeks, July 10th - August 4th. Participants will be expected to join us Monday through Friday. Each day's session will last 3 hours a day, from 10 AM to 1 PM, Second Life time (PST). The time of day, however, is not set in stone, and may be modified prior to the start of the program with the agreement of the participants.

What is Camp GK?

Camp GK is a program for teens in the virtual world of Second Life who want to know more about what's going on the world. Through fun activities and workshops, this program will be a chance to learn about U.S. foreign policy, and what youth can do to make a difference. Teens who take part in Camp GK will select an issue, design a plan of action, and launch a project that will be carried out in the teen grid.

Who should apply?

Applicants need to have completed their freshman year of high school (or the home school equivalent). Teens living outside the United States are welcome to apply to Camp Global Kids.

Camp GK will be a lot of fun, but it will also include a lot of serious engagement with important global issues. Participants should be motivated and enthusiastic. You should be interested in learning about international affairs and thinking critically about the world we live in.

At Camp GK you will be encouraged to think freely and openly about all kinds of international issues and form your own opinions about these issues. You should apply if you are interested in taking part in lively discussion with a diverse group of individuals who offer a variety of perspectives. You must be able to work well with others, showing respect for people who come from different backgrounds and people who have opinions that differ from yours.

What kind of commitment does Global Kids expect from the participants of Camp GK?

Participants will be required to come to the program each day that it is in session, and give their full attention to Camp GK activities when they are there. Planned absences may be approved in advance.

Participants will also be expected to support an atmosphere of respect. This includes treating each other with respect and also showing respect for other people's opinions.

Global Kids will not tolerate disruptive behavior like PVPing, excessive gesturing, the use of unacceptable language or disrespect for other people in the program.

What can you expect from Global Kids?

In exchange for your participation, here is what you can expect to find at Camp GK:

> thoughtful adults skilled in working with teenagers, both online and offline.

> a place where each person's voice is heard.

> a safe space where individuals treat one another with respect.

> a chance to learn and have fun at the same time.

> the opportunity to learn about important issues, formulate your own opinion and learn how you can make a difference in the world.

> the chance to take on a leadership role in Teen Second Life, as the participants of Camp GK spearhead a project in the teen grid about an issue of their choosing.

There will be a stipend of $100 US for participants who complete the program.

How do I apply?

Complete all four parts of this online application. We highly recommend typing your responses to the essay questions first in a word processing program so they can be easily edited and reviewed. When complete, paste the text into this online application form.

Global Kids is committed to diversity and this issue will be taken into account in the application process.

The last day to submit applications is June 23rd, by 12 pm SLT.

Allar has done a good job as a moderator, but in this case, crossed the line in implying a connection between two accounts. Because the resident moderator program operates with a zero tolerance policy, Allar is being removed from the program. I thank Allar for his enthusiasm and efforts in his time as moderator.
