The craft coffee company and festival sponsor unleashed the "Better Energy" of its chilled Cold Brew at a branded bus within the Coachella campground and at an interactive “Ice Sauna” photo booth at the DayClub Palm Springs for attendees seeking escape from the heat. They also rolled out a branded keg Trike, which cruised through the campground and outside the Sahara tent of the festival offering samples of its signature Baridi Black Cold Brew coffee on-tap.

How to make an athlete out of water

                    Local

You’re looking at the brief. It says “Water made active”. Hmmm. What’s the purest expression of that thought? What if you could somehow make the water become active – like it had come to life in the shape of an athlete?

The initial idea part is never easy, but the steps that followed were certainly no walk in the park. Gatorade’s G Active is a rehydrating blend of water and electrolytes, ideal for replacing fluid lost during exercise. So TBWA\Chiat\Day approached Unit9 and director Cole Paviour, who in turn enlisted Mr Moco and Machine Shop to somehow turn this very pure idea into a reality.

CGI would have been easier but cheating, so the challenge was to find the right technology to capture this idea in camera. Motion capture gave them a moving 3D athlete to recreate in water. Machine Shop custom-built a ‘rain-rig’ made up of over 2000 switches which worked almost like a 3D printer, using water and gravity to create a fleeting figure in liquid form.

Flash-lighting froze each frame in time and motion control came back into the fray so they could capture the effect with a synced camera move. This behind-the-scenes expands on the technical challenges they faced and how they overcame them. The ‘how’ is just as intriguing as the ”what’.

Bruno Acanfora’s quote rings true: “We were afraid, we were excited, afraid again.” That feeling of fear alternating with excitement is one we’ve felt when your pushing boundaries. It’s exciting to solve complicated problems no one’s faced before, but equally terrifying that you may not solve the next one while you’re splashing your client’s cash.

What do you know, it’s all worked out very well indeed. A simple, powerful idea mixed with innovation and technical excellence. Super job.

JanSport tapped their longtime AOR, Teak, to cast both the SuperBreak and the Hatchet backpacks as a companion for self-expression and discovery.

Teak Creative Director Greg Rowan found inspiration from the idea of urban exploration. “Cities are a magnet for people who are just starting out—instinctively following an innate sense of discovery. Urban explorers are pioneers, specifically targeting places that are off-limits or seldom seen, using photography to capture their own personal experience.”

To keep the campaign more authentic, Teak took a non-traditional path to finding talent, choosing to feature real young people, not actors. This approach extended to the video soundtrack, where Teak used up and coming musicians.

Check them out.

What benefits do customers gain by not having to carry their groceries, by having their hands free?

Introducing "The Worst Song in the World", a film by Monoprix, its agency Rosapark, and directed by Traktor, which demonstrates an unusual but all-too familiar advantage to having your hands free.

Uber brought its double decker dining experience to San Francisco for the weekend thanks to SF shop Manifold. In celebration of the Nov 2nd launch of the Uber Visa card, Manifold engaged Chef Jennifer Pucci of Park Tavern, Chef David Barzelay of Lazy Bear and Chef Anthony Tanagreta of Belga to create SF-inspired meals for a small group of Uber power users and frequent riders.

Manifold worked with Uber on all aspects of the fully-custom Uber Ride-and-Dine bus from strategy, to creative and design to production and fabrication.

Looks like a pretty cool activation.

HORIZON takes audiences on an artful expedition from the highest peaks to the deepest seas, through all ten provinces and three territories. Drawing upon artistic inspiration from the country’s rich cultural mosaic, the film features traditional and contemporary creative works set in the unforgettable urban and natural landscapes. HORIZON was created to celebrate Canada’s diversity on its 150th anniversary last year.

It's FREE - and kinda a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as the film has never screened in the USA. This technical exhibition is one-of-a-kind and at the largest all-digital-dome on Earth.

Hub thanks the A's for 8 years of fun baseball spots.

Sad news for Hub Strategy & Communication - as they've apparently lost the Oakland A's account that they've worked on for 8 years. But instead of letting it get them down, they decided to celebrate their work and create this fun highlight reel of the 70+ spots Hub produced for the Oakland team over the years.

Hub Founder DJ O'Neil told us, "I’m saddened by it, but I have to look at the bright side—it was a hell of a ride! It was one of those rare things in team sports where even the players (who did the commercials for free) were into it; many actually requested to be in the spots—at one point I even had two players collaborating with me on the writing of tv spots.

Nice work, guys.

barrettSF lets us all be superheroes for new FoxNext game.

barrettSF has created a new advertising campaign for MARVEL Strike Force, FoxNext Games’ just-launched free-to-play RPG.

The creative, which was edited into 60-, 30-, 15- and 6-second ads, are running across the internet and cable and broadcast TV. barrettSF is also working on a series of social videos for MARVEL Strike Force and several posters.

Everything except the gameplay shown at the ad’s end is original CG footage that barrettSF created with Los Angeles-based visual effects studio The Mill. Much action—such as a stuntman falling down a ramp—involved filming live actors in motion-capture suits. The designs for the characters came from game developer Fox Next. The agency took those assets, animated them and then inserted the world around them to create the spot.

“I’ve been a huge comic book fan ever since I was a kid,” said Todd Eisner, barrettSF Creative Director. “To be able to carve out a new corner of the MARVEL universe is a dream come true.”
