What's the inspiration behind your shop's name?

Kitty is my mum's nickname, Polly is mine, so it made sense to bring the two together as mum has been a great source of support & encouragement in getting the shop up and running. Sounds kinda sweet too...!

How old is your shop?

Kitty and Polly is approx two years old.

What inspired you to start your own home business?

I always relished the idea of running my own business, and having input into all aspects of it. As well at that, I've worked in industry for a long time and really wanted to do something more creative.

How do you find products to sell on your store?

I do a lot of research online, visit craft fairs and find new sources through the likes of Twitter and Facebook. There are lots of makers/craftspeople who get directly in touch with me as well.

What was the toughest challenge you faced so far?

I work full time as well so the toughest challenge is finding enough time to dedicate to Kitty & Polly and make sure I focus on the priorities - it's very easy to get distracted by Twitter and all the lovely blogs out there (such as yours !)

How did you get over it?

Not sure I have completely mastered this challenge, but I have developed a good routine which ensures I work on the business but also take time out to relax and enjoy life too !

A few days ago, I learned about This Is My Habitat Contest from Decor8 (read her post, really worth reading) and Caroline of Patchwork Harmony. I just wanna do a repost on this for those who may have not heard about it yet. It is an exciting competition that I want to share.

Habitat is a UK-based international home furnishing company with stores in France, Spain, Germany and retail partners in Turkey, New Zealand, Thailand, Iceland, and more.

On usual days, I'm a girl who prefers to walk in flats than in heels. I love ballerina shoes and these comfortable walkers from OTBT.

These Madeline slip ons are so cute.

But of course, you can't be wearing flats all the time. These shoes by Nicole have just the right heel and are a perfect wear to the office.

I also like these fall shoes by Apapezza.

Poetic License have a lovely mix of flat and heels. I love these two checkered pumps with accents of bow and flower!

This is not the first time that we're featuring Made By Girl. A lot of posts on this blog included items from the shop. Yes, she is a fave. Earlier this year, she was our Shop of the Month. This week is different because Jennifer herself answered the questions for our readers.

What's the inspiration behind your shop's name?

I decided on MadeByGirl because it was catchy and I wanted to make it obvious that the products were madeby a girl.... (me).

A little over 2 years old.

The ability to work from home seemed like an attractive idea to me, so i pursued it. I had a friend who was in the same industry & her success inspired me to really go ahead and take the leap of faith into starting my own. I've always loved Graphic Design, drawing and being creative.....designing my products keeps me doing all that and more.

Marketing. It is very time consuming and can be very draining at times. You feel like your never quite done.

How did you get over it?

I just take breaks & then give myself time to reflect on what I've done and what I have to tackle next.

I fell in-love with this online shop, the moment I took a peek. Thank you Holly of Decor8 for sharing this amazing shop. The name is La Cerise Sur Le Gateau (Sherry on the Cake). This French shop is owned by Designer Anne Hubert and offers a mix of screenprinted household linen - tea towels, laundry bags, pillows & cushions, duvets, tee-shirts (for kids), aprons, and other lovelies.

Ten Tips for First Time Student Credit Cardholders

Thinking about getting a credit card for college? Check out these ten tips:

1. Don’t sign up to get the freebie. Offers like free shirt, free cap, or free lunch may entice some young people to sign up and send an application. Before you know it, you could be stuck with a student credit card that does not match your needs.

2. Opt Out. Credit card companies may solicit names and contact information from campuses. If your mail box or inbox is flooded with marketing offers from various credit card issuers, you can minimize the number of offers you receive by calling (888) 5-OPT-OUT, or (888) 567-8688.

3. Shop around. You want to compare the rates, fees and the terms that each card offers. Use credit card comparison sites for easier evaluation. Choose a student credit card that will report your payments to the three major credit bureaus. See to it that it complements your lifestyle.

4. Watch out for misleading teaser rates. The interest rate may start out low or you may be offered 0% APR for the first few months, but what happens after that? How much will the regular interest rate cost you? Are there hidden charges? What’s the catch?

5. Study the fine print. Many people are lured to sign up for the “wrong” credit card because they do not take time to examine the Terms & Conditions. The small font and the length of the Agreement may be discouraging but it’s the only way you can know for sure if you made the right choice.

6. Keep it low. Going over your credit limit is bad. But if you want to stay out of bad debt and maintain good credit history, you need to keep your credit usage minimal. Do not charge more than 40% worth of debt to your credit.

7. Avoid the extra fees. You can avoid additional costs such as over-the-limit fees, late penalty fees and interest rates by being a responsible payer. Submit your payments on time. Make it a goal to pay off your charges in full each month or each billing period.

8. Pay more than the minimum. There may be times when you can’t pay off your full balance. In such instances, be sure to submit your payment on time. Instead of paying only the minimum due required, try to pay more so you can complete the rest of your payments more easily next time.

9. Think thrice. Before using your student credit card for any purchase, ask yourself, “Do I really need to buy this item now?”, “Can I afford to pay it back on my due date?” If you have any hesitations, it’s best to put off the purchase.

10. Look out for changes. Credit card issuers can change their rules and increase their fees at any time they wish as long as they provide an advanced 15-day notice. You need to be alert about the billing statements or notices sent to your mail. Review the fine print regularly. If you noticed some changes, call your issuer right away. Most companies will lower their rate or adjust their terms if you make the request, especially if you’re one of their best customers.

I got an e-mail today from Aprile Elcich, I'm sure you remember her. She owns the nostalgic collage shop You Are What You Love. She is going to have a solo show from October 16th to November 12th, 2009.

The Gallery showcase is presented by Industtrees, with the theme "The Royal Family". Aprile will be displaying her artwork- a series of mixed media collages inspired by a pair of scrapbooks she found at the St. Lawrence antique market (read more of it on her post).

What's the inspiration behind your shop's name?

It's a combination of my first name, and the last name of my German ancestors, VonBublitz. I always thought VonBublitz was a funny name and it kind of stuck. But now I can't stand my shop name and it's too late to change it!

I think I was being lazy when I came up with it, and now I really wish that I would have gone with something different. Oh well, live and learn. I learned a lesson in thinking things through.

How old is your shop?

I opened it in March, so I suppose that makes it just about 6 months old.

What inspired you to start your own home business?

My dissatisfaction for having to working for The Man!

What was the toughest challenge you faced so far?

Self-doubt. Wondering if I'm doing it all right.

I think that I will forever be working on that one. However, it helps when i reach out to other sellers and business-owners for advice and reassurance.

What tips would you want to share for aspiring home based entrepreneurs like you?

I still feel like i'm clumsily stumbling my way through all of this. the thing that has helped me the most, is often being reminded that not everything has to be perfect. there is no right or wrong way to start and maintain a shop. certainly don't blindly jump into it, but don't over think and over-plan. there are all kinds of great surprises and unpredictable insights along the way, so it's important to stay open and flexible.

also, utilize all of the amazing free resources that etsy has to offer sellers! I have learned sooo much from their articles and videos.

Any message to your customers and the people who support you?

I never cease to be absolutely amazed by my customers' and fellow shop-owners' genuine kindness. there is such a warm and supportive sense of community on etsy. i owe a huge, heartfelt "thank you" to all of the amazing people that i've encountered since i've opened my shop.
