Fortune 100 CEO’s have not embraced social media. Let me rephrase that. They’re not even participating in social media. According to a report from UberCEO, only two of the top 100 have Twitter profiles and all 100 are ghosts in the blogosphere.

In addition, a Forbes Insights study (sponsored by Google) titled “The Rise of the Digital C-Suite” revealed that only 1 percent of those over the age of 50 provide daily contributions to a work-related blog. So what does this mean? If you’re old and powerful, you’ll likely not be active in social media? No. It just demonstrates the gap between those who entered the work force with a reliance on fax machines, phones and letters vs. those who live in an environment where Facebook, blog posts and tweets dominate the communications.

So what’s a newbie social media user who happens to run one of the world’s largest companies supposed to do? For starters, let’s take a closer look at seven CEO’s who are doing it right - regardless of fame or Fortune status. Follow them. Better yet, ask them a question. They know what social media is about so don’t be surprised when they respond to you.

It’s almost been a million years since our last post or at least it seems that way. As a result of the million-follower march on Twitter last week, we wanted to take a closer look at 7 of the most notable social media milestones-at-a-million.

7) Ashton Kutcher vs. CNN for One Million Followers on Twitter – Twitter has captured the imagination and interest of companies, celebrities and everyday citizens fascinated with the limitations and possibilities of communicating in 140 characters. The pop culture frenzy took an epic turn when Ashton Kutcher challenged CNN to see who could be the first to a million followers. While Ashton edged out CNN to the throne and proclaimed “a media revolution,” the real impact will be felt by the recipients of mosquito nets in Africa through Malaria No More. Kutcher, Larry King, Ryan Seacrest, Oprah Winfrey and Demi Moore pledged to buy thousands of nets to help prevent the spread of malaria. Hey guys, how about a race to a million nets that challenges the entire Twittersphere?

6) Crowdsourcing the News Gets Big When Digg Surpasses One Million Registered Users – Being featured on the front page of any media outlet is a noteworthy accomplishment, but empowering the community to create the headlines touched a nerve and created a new way to showcase popular content on the Web. Over the past 365 days, the top three stories that users have Dugg have been CNN.com stories on President Obama.

5) Second Life Reaches One Million Residents – What to do when you want more than just your own life? Create a second one in Linden Lab’s Second Life, “a free online virtual world imagined and created by its Residents.” This world captured the attention of both individuals and companies eager to reach a captive audience. The one millionth account or Resident was registered on October 18, 2006 and even produced a virtual real-estate millionaire named Anshe Chung. This week, Linden Labs reported that Second Life is surging in user-to-user transactions. The housing “bubble” is back!

Go on Ning and you’re likely to find a community that fits your lifestyle, with networks such as One Million Dancers or One Million Gardens.

The Obama page has by far more supporters than any other page – whether it’s a politician, celebrity, or band – on all of Facebook. For those who have touted the conventional wisdom that young people don’t care about politics, there couldn’t be a better testament to the energy and enthusiasm of young people today. One million Facebook users have made clear that not only are they engaged with the political process, they are ready for change to come too.”

Hi everyone; welcome back to The Social 7, a weekly conversation on the top 7 stories in social media and marketing. Instead of our typical video-cast, we’ve decided to write a blog post this week instead. But don’t worry, our beautiful faces will be back to grace your computer screens next week! On with the top 7 stories, and as always, feel free to submit ideas for future episodes.

7. Jack in the Box Goes Social

Anyone who was watching the Super Bowl knows that the “founder” of fast food chain Jack in the Box was involved in a tragic “accident” in which he was hit by a bus and subsequently fell into a coma. The stunt marked Jack in the Box’s first foray into social media, that included the launch of a micro site, http://www.hangintherejack.com, where fans of the chain could leave messages, photos and videos to the comatose Jack urging him to get better. Fortunately for fans, Jack has had a miraculous recovery and is back running the company, starting with a major logo redesign. Overall the campaign seems to have been highly successful for Jack in the Box, with tons of consumers taking part.

6. MySpace Execs Leave/MySpace Gets a Credit Card

Just as credit lines are being slashed for consumers around the world, MySpace is partnering with Citi to introduce a new credit card aimed at their core user base. Citi Forward by MySpace rewards users for making payments on time, doing things that are “good for the future” (like recycling, donating canned goods, using CFLs, etc) with lower interest rates and points they can use to download music.

But while MySpace is gaining its own credit card, it’s also losing more executives. Three execs, including Chief Operating Officer Amit Kapur, are leaving MySpace to pursue other ventures (read: start their own company). The blog-o-sphere lit up with questions and predictions about what this means for MySpace, particularly since it recently lost the “biggest social network” crown to Facebook, but so far all that is clear, is that some lucky exec at MySpace is about to get a big promotion.

5. Twitter Rolls Out Integrated Search

There’s always constantly new ways to interact with Twitter, usually coming thanks to a creative developer making use of the Twitter API. However, it looks like Twitter might actually be making a pretty major update to the site soon, by introducing integrated search. Twitter added basic search functionality last year, when it bought Summize and integrated into the site - however the current solution still requires users to navigate to a dedicated page. According to rumors (and screen shots from accounts that have had the feature rolled out to them) Twitter will be rolling out an integrated search bar across the site that will allow users to search without navigating away from their current page. This will address a complaint raised by many of the top users and could maybe even bring some traffic back to the site (currently 70% of twitter-ers use another application besides twitter.com to view and update their feeds).

4. To Blog (sponsored by insert company) or Not to Blog

Should our conversations be guided by cash? Forrester issued a controversial recommendation titled, Add Sponsored Conversations to Your Toolbox which sparked a firestorm of protest, as well as support.

“Blogging is a beautiful thing. The prospect of this young media being overrun with “pay for play” pseudo-shilling is not an attractive one to us.”

- Marshall Kirkpatrick, ReadWriteWeb

“Sponsored conversations are happening, yet we insist on it being done right and ethically, that means disclosure and being authentic.”

- Jeremiah Owyang, Forrester (also produced A Running List of Sponsored Conversations)

Would you tolerate sponsored blog posts, tweets or other forms of online dialogue?

3.YouTube Serves Up 100 Million Viewers (or roughly the population of Mexico)

YouTube reached the magical milestone of 100 million video viewers in one month last week. While this was music to YouTube management’s ears, other music-related news overshadowed this news, including a rumored partnership with Universal Music Group and the site’s decision to remove music videos from the UK.

2. Skittles Social Media Campaign

Last week, Skittles.com attempted to get savvy with the social Web, changing their Web site to portray different social media platforms. The homepage, for example, shows you their Twitter conversation; the “friends link brings you to Skittles’ Facebook page; while the “Media/Photos” tab shows you their photos on Flickr. This is a neat campaign and definitely an innovative way of connecting with those who are passionate connecters and active across different social media platforms, but are you having trouble seeing the value in this bold move? Well, according to Andy Beal of Marketing Pilgrim, Skittle’s new campaign increased traffic to their homepage by 1332 percent in one day! How’s that for value?

1. Facebook Updates

In a two hour long press conference last week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced some rather large improvements being made to Facebook, especially in the area of branded company and personality pages (read his summary of the changes here). From Zuckerberg himself - “Once called Pages, these new profiles will now begin looking and functioning just like user profiles. Just as you connect with friends on Facebook, you can now connect and communicate with celebrities, musicians, politicians and organizations.” In addition to branded page updates, Facebook will also be revising the homepage, allowing users to see friend updates as they happen (similar to Twitter) and choose not to see updates from certain people. Of course, in the good ol’ social Web, rumors and inaccurate information began circulating, which the unofficial All Facebook blog attempted to address a day later. A few friends of The Social 7 provided their candid feedback on the redesign:

sseverino: i can soon filter those boring status posts on #facebook!

JGoldsborough: Do think it hurts a Web site’s rep 2 redesign so often.

See you next week!

Top 7 Stories

7. Mobile Update - Yahoo and Google: Lots of exciting developments in mobile this week; Yahoo introduced a mobile platform, while Google added paid apps to its Android market.

6. Google Wins Street View Privacy Lawsuit: Aaron and Christine Boring who attempted to sue Google over privacy concerns walked away from the lawsuit last week empty handed. Note to all - please oh please, next time you think about suing Google, you might try kindly asking them to take the pictures down first?

5. ShareThis Introduces Major Updates: Sharing your favorite blog posts just got a whole lot easier. Last week, the popular ShareThis plug-in introduced several updates to make sharing faster and more user-friendly. Updates include a tab free interface, a contact manager, and an option to save content to your ShareBox account.

4. The Trial of Pirate Bay: Last week, Pirate Bay founders Gottfrid Svartholm Warg (aka Anakata), Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi (aka Brokep) and Fredrik Neij (TiAMO) went on trial in one of the most important copyright infringement cases the file-sharing community has witnessed to date (this is the first time that someone has been put on trial for hosting a site that only directs people to .torrent files without actually hosting them). The three are pleading not guilty, though they’ll have a tough time getting past the likes of Warner Bros, MGM and Fox.

3. Boxee Loses Hulu Support: Last week, Boxee, a media center software package that allows customers to stream online video to their TVs, announced that Hulu would no longer be supported. Why? The request came from Hulu’s content partners, who insisted that Boxee support be removed. Apparently, at the end of the day, it’s the content that matters to Hulu.

2. Succestival Twestival: Twestival, a monumental event that came together in just under a month’s time in 202 cities around the world, raised more than $250,000 for charity: water. This event truly shows the power Twitter has to mobilize the masses.

1. Facebook Terms of Service… Flop!: Facebook customers used to own their content… not anymore! Facebook introduced a new privacy policy (who actually reads those?!) saying that they own all rights to the content you upload to their site. But wait; they didn’t? Facebook claimed that they had to make the changes to accommodate the way its members were using the site. The public didn’t buy it and ultimately they had to retract the new TOS after a firestorm of controversy.

Tweet of the Week

John Mayer was apparently quite pleased with the way he looked at the Oscars, to quote his tweet: “I’m not going to lie to you, I look good. But don’t get used to it, because I can’t stand perfection.”

Viral Video of the Week

Rick Santelli set off a firestorm of debate and controversy last week after his tirade on CNBC. His rant led to rebuke from the White House and a widespread debate about whether a reporter should be reporting their own opinions.

Social Shutterbug of the Week

In case you haven’t heard, the Tour de California is well underway, with tons of great photos on Flickr. Will Lance Armstrong take this race, too?

Social media is playing a significant role in how consumers participate and share information online. Instead of our weekly video on the top 7 stories, we’re taking a closer look at how 7 different industries are creating new opportunities and relationships through social media. Law firms, healthcare, action sports, real estate, travel/tourism and colleges are all examined further. If you’re in any of these industries, we encourage you to provide additional examples or share insights in the comments below.

LAW FIRMS: As expected, lawyers are in an intense debate about social media, especially when it comes to Twitter. Many have embraced it and find tremendous value in communicating directly with clients through this community. Lawyers USA covered the opportunities and reservations about Twitter here: “Attorneys flocking to Twitter for marketing.” Want a list of lawyers on Twitter? JD Scoop has a growing list of more than 500. Need an attorney in Milwaukee, Wisconsin or just need to fact check a law in this state? Follow @moanderlawfirm

David Harlow, a health care lawyer, recently gave a presentation at the Law Practice Management Section of the Massachusetts Bar Association and shared insights on “social media as a set of tools for marketing a legal practice, focusing on blogging, Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.” His slides are available here.

YouTube is also a key marketing channel for many law firms. Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, “a preeminent plaintiff firm that handles serious personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits across the nation,” (disclosure: a friend works here) posts videos of the various TV appearances of its attorneys as well as animated videos that are used in trials. It’s most watched video, an attorney discussing a jet crash in Aspen, has more than 44,000 views.

-Nick Mendoza

HEALTHCARE: Whether its patients checking for information on WebMD, or doctors talking to each other about the latest developments in online chat rooms, healthcare has embraced the internet and social media strongly over the last several years. Physicians in particular have taken to using social media as a way to connect with both their patients and each other.

A recent study by Manhattan Research shows that at least 60% of physicians are active on social media sites or plan to join one soon (as an interesting corollary, they also found that these physicians were more likely to write prescriptions than those not on social networking sites). In particular, doctors have been drawn to specialized, physician only, social networking sites (like Sermo and Medscape Physician Connect) that offer an isolated and functional community suited more closely to their needs.

My take on the next trend to look for: pharmaceutical and medical supply companies reaching out to doctors and engaging them through social networking sites. What we won’t see: doctors on mainstream sites, because do you really want to be “poked” by one of your patients or have to do a “wall-to-wall” diagnosis?

-Alex Miller

ACTION SPORTS: From surfing the waves to the World Wide Web, the action sports industry is doing a nice job integrating their content into the social sphere. Virtually every action sports magazine, Transworld Surf is one example, has an affiliated Web site and blog, and action sports enthusiast blogs are popping up everywhere, in every niche imaginable. Video podcasting is also a growing trend in this area, with everything from mountain resorts to sponsor brands pushing out content on a regular basis. Don’t have a TV or want to see exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage? Head on over to Fuel TV (you can watch Red Bull Snowscrapers this Thursday!) Or perhaps you are learning to surf, but have no idea where to start? Learn to surf on YouTube!

Many traditional action sports-related brands are also hosting a flurry of contests to engage enthusiasts online. There’s Burton’s Snow at Home Contest, Totino’s Roll into the X-games Contest, and many more.

- Andrea Nowack

REAL ESTATE: Home, tweet, home! What is a real estate agent to do in a recession? The demand for homes is stagnant, but the interest in reaching potential buyers through social media is growing fast. Relationships are a critical component in real estate leads and smart agents are seeking connections through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more. Armed with the knowledge that 9 out of 10 buyers research homes online (according to the National Association of Realtors), shouldn’t all real estate agents be actively pursuing contacts online? A few notable individuals in real estate:

Andy Kaufman, a REALTOR with Keller Williams Realty in Berkeley, blogs and has 4,588 followers on Twitter: http://twitter.com/andykaufman

Daniel Rothamel in Palmyra, Virginia is a REALTOR who blogs at Real Estate Zebra and shares insights on the real estate market through a podcast, Facebook and Twitter: http://twitter.com/realestatezebra

As social media expert Chris Brogan commented, “The first and most obvious thing I think the real estate world can (and should) be doing is buying video cameras and shooting their own walkthroughs.” A quick real estate scan on YouTube results in 3,200 channels (see above). Additional suggestions are featured on Brogan’s blog.

-Nick Mendoza

TOURISM/TRAVEL/HOSPITALITY: The travel and hospitality industry is very active on social media with multiple airlines, hotels, travel sites and even cruise ships offering deals, customer support, tips, reviews and more. Thinking of going to Vegas? Why not follow Vegas.com on Twitter: http://twitter.com/vegascom You’ll quickly learn that May 2 is the grand opening of Sapphire Pool and that Flight of the Conchords is playing at the Joint on May 23.

If you want to stay at the MGM Grand, explore this profile first: http://twitter.com/mgmgrand Flying to Vegas? Southwest Airlines is fully engaged with communications and promotions filtering through Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Flickr. Taking a cruise? Learn more about an entire community dedicated to passengers on Carnival Cruise Lines at http://www.carnivalconnections.com. Prefer to stay on land? Follow the “suite tweets” of Fairmont Hotels: http://twitter.com/FairmontHotels

-Nick Mendoza

COLLEGE CAMPUSES: The market where Facebook originated, college students are a natural target for social media campaigns as they live more integrated lives now than ever before. This is why many colleges and universities are using social media to connect with students and help them connect with each other. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, right?

Auburn University is a great example of a school that is doing an outstanding job stepping outside the traditional Intranet to engage with students in a way that meets their needs. The school its own Facebook page, Twitter feed, blog for releases, and YouTube channel. Robert French (@rdfrench), PR professor at Auburn, has taken social media one step further by requiring his students to be actively engaged in a variety of different social media channels, from creating Web sites to using Wikis. His department has its own social network (only for students and alumni) that is used to call out events, scholarships, videos, job & internship postings, and more.

Similar to Robert French, Kelli Matthews (@kmatthews) at the University of Oregon blogs frequently about topics students might be interested in, and also requires her PR students to start blogs and twitter accounts. Many of her students have gone on to continue writing even after the ten week class, turning their class project into a long-term hobby (and in some cases, finding a career from it!) The school’s career center also has a great blog.

University of the Sciences, a smaller University in Philadelphia, interacts with students via Twitter (many schools are also jumping on board), and plans to create student blogs aimed at prospective students soon. Have a question about the University? Ask a current student!

-Andrea Nowack

THE AUTO INDUSTRY: Car companies are going through a host of changes right now (as anyone who has been alive for the last several months knows) and part of that change has been an adoption of social media to reach out to and connect with consumers. A number of manufacturers are among the first “old” companies that are realizng the true value of social media and hiring people to interact with these communities (note I said interact with, not throw up a facebook page promoting their product and call it a day).

A great example comes from Ford; back in December, Ford was threatening to sue an enthusiast website, The Ranger Station, because they were selling knockoff products using the Ford logo. Merits of the case aside, this was a PR disaster waiting to happen - TRS has tons of very dedicated and very engaged members who felt a loyalty to the site and were willing to defend it. Fortunately for Ford, their social media “guru” saw the controversy unfolding and immediately responded: promising to investigate and get to the bottom of the issue. His quick actions helped diffuse the situation before it had a chance to blow out of proportion (he also managed to work out a compromise between Ford Legal and TRS). This serves as a great example of why its so important that your social media team is actually a part of the networks that they are engaging (as I blogged about earlier during the MotrinMoms controversy).

Top 7 Stories

7. Mystery Murder: Last week as his trial came to an end, a man was found guilty for killing his estranged wife last year after she changed her Facebook marital status from married to single.

6. Vatican on YouTube: Just when you thought just about everyone was on YouTube these days… Last week, Pope Benedict XVI launched an official YouTube channel for the Vatican.

5. Get Married on MySpace: Last week, MySpace announced that it plans to create a 13-episode reality series called “Get Married on MySpace,” which will debut on MySpace TV this spring. What’s next? Virtual Weddings?

4. The White House is a Bloggin’: As Barack Obama was sworn into Presidency this past Tuesday, the technology seemed to follow. In the tech. mix, the White House launched its first official blog Tuesday.

3. Internet Is One Billion Strong: In this day and age, who could really live without it? Last week, ComScore issued a report stating that the Internet officially surpassed one billion global users in December.

2. Ustream Launches an iPhone App: Just in time for the Inauguration, Ustream.tv launched an official application into the iTunes app store and in just a few days became the most popular free entertainment application.

(Disclaimer: Ustream is a Zeno Group client)

1. The ‘Social Media’ Inauguration: Though his Presidential campaigning has long since come to a halt, President Barack Obama’s use of social media continued to prevail. In the most social Inauguration ever, people everywhere engaged in conversation about the monumental event in more ways than one.

Tweet of the Week:

According to the Twitter blog, the company saw about 5 times as many tweets per second as normal on Inauguration day. Thought many thought Twitter wouldn’t be able to handle the excess traffic, it performed surprisingly well. Jeffjarvis: “If people would stop writing tweets predicting that Twitter will fail, maybe that will lighten the load enough so it doesn’t fail.”

Viral Video of the Week:

Pope Benedict calls the Internet a “New Way to Speak to God” during a video posted on the Vatican’s new YouTube channel.

Social Shutterbug of the Week:

President Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address

7. Online and Mobile Inauguration Streaming: Don’t have TV access to a TV on Inauguration day? That’s okay, you can still watch… and all you need is an Internet connection or iPhone! Hulu, along with several other Inauguration streaming partners, will stream the event live, and Ustream just released their much-anticipated iPhone application to the Apple app store.

6.
5. Chipotle iPhone App: Like Chipotle? Well, apparently, so does everyone else! This past week Chipotle launched an iPhone application that was so popular it crashed (or, “ate”?) the application and the company decided to pull it from the app store a few hours later. Burrito lovers, don’t fret - Chipotle plans to reintroduce the app in two weeks after they’ve had a chance to work out a few of the bugs.

4. MySpace Webmail Client: Rumors of a supposed MySpace Webmail client are beginning to circulate the Web. If (and when) this happens, MySpace users will be given [user]@myspace.com e-mail addresses, making MySpace the third largest Webmail client providers on the Web, third only to Microsoft and Yahoo.

3. Yahoo Names New CEO: Sorry Jerry, someone has finally arrived to fill your shoes… and this time she’s bringing a pair of heels! This week Yahoo named Carol Bartz as new CEO of the company.

2. U.S. Government Now on YouTube: Social media in politics is now extending beyond just Presidential campaigns. This week, both the House of Representatives and the Senate launched official YouTube pages.

1.
The internet lit up with news of a plan making an emergency landing into the Hudson River - Tweeters jumped all over it, especially those who saw the plane go down! Here’s the first Tweet announcing what happened.
