K.I.E.R.E.M.E

Yo te respondo tu me replicas

“No + llorá” was written by Spanish singer Bebe and features on her second album “Y.”. “Y.” was released five years after her very successful debut album “Pafuera Telarañas” and “No + llorá” is the first track on the album. “Y.” entered the Spanish charts at number one. It includes the Latin Grammy Award-nominated song “Me Fui” and other single “Pa’ Mi Casa”. The album was produced by Carlos Jean, who also worked with Bebe on her debut album, and was recorded over a year in Madrid and Cadiz. Bebe wrote all of the lyrics, dealing with such issues as love, sex and self-respect. Y. received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album.

The Spanish lyrics:

He estao durmiendo a dos metros bajo tierra

No, no, no, no,…

No tengo ninguna prisa
Paro! donde quiera!

La música que llevo
Será mi compañera, ahh, ahh, ah…

Aprendí a escuchar las noches
No pienso enterrar mis dolores

A punto a punto..

“Ella” by Bebe is another single from her debut album Pafuera Telarañas. Here you can listen to this great Spanish song and read along with the Spanish lyrics to work on your Spanish listening and reading comprehension skills. How do you understand the lyrics? What do you think this song is all about? Please let me know in the comments below this post. Maybe other blog users have the same interpretation. Maybe not.

Hoy vas a comprender
Hoy vas a hacer reir
Hoy vas a conseguir

Hoy te vas a querer

Hoy vas a conseguir

Hoy vas a comprender
Hoy vas a hacer reir
Hoy vas a conseguir

“Con mis manos” by Spanish singer Bebe is another great single from the 2004 Bebe album Pafuera Telarañas (“Out with the spiderwebs”). Con mis manos was written by Bebe and released on November 15th 2004. It is very difficult to describe Bebe’s musical style. Maybe alternative gypsy folk rock, with tinges of dance, punk and flamenco. She is always original and always surprising and every song on Pafuera Telarañas just gets better and better with every play.

Malo by Bebe is a harrowing, flamenco-flavored tale of domestic abuse with the powerful chorus of: “Malo, malo, malo eres; no se daña a quien se quiere. It was the lead single from the 2004 Bebe album Pafuera Telarañas (“Out with the spiderwebs”). Malo was not only super popular in Spain, it also went to number one in the Mexican charts and number seven in the US Latin charts. It was one of those songs that was heard everywhere you went in Spain in 2004. The simplistic black and white video and Bebe’s ardent and icy eye contact perfectly convey the anger of the lyrics.

Malo, malo, malo eres, siempre, malo, malo, malo eres

Spanish singer-songwriter and actress Bebe (Maria Nieves Rebolledo Vila) was born in Valencia, May 9, 1978. She only spent one year in Valencia and then moved to Extremadura. She was raised in a musical environment with her parents part of the folk group Suberin. In 1996, after completing her studies in COU, she went to Madrid to study drama. A few months later she began acting in the capital and in 2001 won a contest for songwriters in Extremadura.

In late 2004 she released the fantastic debut album “Pafuera Telaranas” with the production of Carlos Jean for EMI Music. Best known songs included “Malo”, “Ella”, “Con Mis Manos” and “Siempre Me Quedará”. Bebe “Malo” is a harrowing, flamenco-flavored tale of domestic abuse and is the album’s emotional centerpoint.

Diarios de motocicleta (The Motorcycle Diaries) – 2004 – Rated R – Adventure/Biography – 126 mins

Diarios de motocicleta (The Motorcycle Diaries) is a 2004 biopic about the 1952 expedition across South America by Ernesto Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado. Ernesto Guevara would later become known all around the world as the iconic Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. This is the film representation of his written memoirs as a wide-eyed 23 year old and we see how Ernesto develops as a person and discovers himself transformed by his observations on the life of the impoverished indigenous people of South America that he meets along the way. Ernesto and Alberto initially set out on Alberto’s old motorcycle (named “La Poderosa” – “The Mighty One”) from their home in Argentina, but are forced to use a variety of different modes of transport to reach their final destination.

Their planned route takes them north across the Andes, along the coast of Chile, through the Atacama Desert and into the Peruvian Amazon in order to reach Venezuela just in time for Granado’s 30th birthday on April 2. Due to various complications along the way they arrive three months late. They set out from Buenos Aires a semester before Ernesto Guevara is due to complete his medical degree with the intention of finding fun and adventure and to see as much of Latin America as they can. Their route takes in more than 5,000 miles in just four and a half months and it is an extremely ambitious ask. The screenplay of Diarios de motocicleta is based primarily on Guevara’s real-life travelogue “The Motorcycle Diaries” by Ernesto Che Guevara, with additional context supplied by “Traveling with Che Guevara: The Making of a Revolutionary” by Alberto Granado.

Through the characters that Ernesto and Alberto encounter on their journey, they experience first-hand the imbalance between the haves and the have-nots of South America. The pair came themselves from relatively wealthy backgrounds and were exposed to people and social classes they would have never encountered otherwise. The trip plants the initial seed of cognitive dissonance and radicalization within Che Guevara, who would later view armed revolution as a way to challenge the continent’s endemic economic inequalities.

Che Guevara is played by Mexican actor Gael García Bernal and Alberto Granado by Argentine actor Rodrigo de la Serna. De la Serna is a second cousin to the real life Guevara on his maternal side. To prepare for the role of the young Che Guevara, Gael García Bernal went through six months of intense preparation which included reading every biography about Guevara, traveling to Cuba to speak with Guevara’s family, and consulting with Guevara’s then still living travel partner Alberto Granado. Bernal also had to work hard on his Argentinian accent and spent 14 weeks reading the works of José Martí, Karl Marx and Che Guevara’s favorite poet Pablo Neruda.

Diarios de motocicleta is directed by Brazilian director Walter Salles and written by Puerto Rican playwright José Rivera. The film was an international co-production among production companies from Argentina, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Chile, Peru and France. It won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures and the 2005 BAFTA Film Award for the Best Film not in the English Language. The sountrack of Diarios de motocicleta is beautiful. The majority of the soundtrack was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, but it also includes the song “Al Otro Lado del Río” by Jorge Drexler which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2005.

El laberinto del fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) – 2006 – Rated R – Fantasy/Drama/War – 119 mins

El laberinto del fauno (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) was released in 2006. It is a Spanish language movie written and directed by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro and produced and distributed by the Mexican film company Esperanto Films. El laberinto del fauno is a dark fantasy movie that deals with the grueling topic of the Spanish Civil War from the perspective of a fairy tale loving ten year old girl. It is actually set in Spain five years after the Spanish Civil War, during the early Francoist period, but the war is still fresh in people’s minds and Spain is in turmoil.

The real world is interweaved with the fantasy world of Ofelia and we are taken to an abandoned labyrinth where we meet a mysterious faun creature. Ofelia interacts with the faun and leaves the horrors of the real world behind. Director Guillermo Del Toro stated that he considers the story to be a parable, influenced by fairy tales, and that it addresses and continues themes from his earlier film “The Devil’s Backbone” (2001). Some of the other works he drew on for inspiration include Lewis Carroll’s “Alice” books, Jorge Luis Borges’ “Ficciones”, Arthur Machen’s “The Great God Pan” and “The White People”, Lord Dunsany’s “The Blessing of Pan”, Algernon Blackwood’s “Pan’s Garden” and Francisco Goya’s works. In 2004, Guillermo del Toro said: “Pan is an original story. Some of my favourite writers (Borges, Blackwood, Machen, Dunsany) have explored the figure of the god Pan and the symbol of the labyrinth. These are things that I find very compelling and I am trying to mix them and play with them.”

There are similarities between El laberinto del fauno and Walt Disney Pictures’ The Chronicles of Narnia: both films are set around the same time, have similar child-age principal characters, mythic creatures, and themes of disobedience and choice. Del Toro said, “This is my version of that universe, not only Narnia, but that universe of children’s literature.” In fact, Guillermo del Toro was asked to direct The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe but turned it down to work on El laberinto del fauno.

This is not by any means a children’s movie. Some of the subject matter is quite shocking and the movie is extremely dark. The horrors of the war and fascist Spain are represented by Ofelia’s stepfather, the Falangist Captain Vidal whose job is to hunt out and kill anti-fascist rebels. At the beginning of the movie, Ofelia travels with her pregnant mother Carmen to meet Captain Vidal who is the father of Carmen’s unborn child. Not wanting to give too much of the story away, Ofelia’s mother grows increasingly ill and her relationship with Vidal increasingly strained. Ofelia is visited by several strange and magical creatures who become central to her story, leading her through the trials of the old labyrinth garden.

El laberinto del fauno premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and has since won numerous international awards, including three Academy Awards, the Ariel Award for Best Picture, the first Saturn Award for Best International Film and the 2007 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. The score for El laberinto del fauno, composed by Javier Navarrete, was released on December 19, 2006. Navarrete and the score were also nominated for an Academy Award. It was entirely structured around a lullaby, and del Toro had the entire score included on the movie soundtrack.

This is the fifth and final of the Spanish English Parallel Texts with Spanish audio about Spanish city Barcelona in Cataluña and here we look at the typical food of Barcelona. Barcelona is an amazing Spanish city in so many ways and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. Barcelona has everything really that you could wish for in a tourist destination: close proximity to the coast with beautiful beaches, great restaurants and bars, good weather, a hustling and bustling modern city, culture, art, history, etc, etc. Parallel Texts are a fantastic way to practice your Spanish. You can listen to my Spanish audio and see how much you understand and then after one of two listens you can check first the Spanish text and afterwards the English text. Try to push yourself not to go straight for the easy option of listening and reading and especially try not to concentrate too heavily on the English translation. Remember that you cannot always translate everything literally and you have to go with the flow of the Spanish version primarily. We have already looked at lots more other Spanish cities in this Parallel Texts Spanish English Course so far and all of the lessons are available completely FREE on the website.

Parallel Texts Barcelona Parte 5 Gastronomía

In English:

Catalonia has a reputation for fine modern and traditional cuisine. Barcelona cuisine is characterized by a flair and creativity that other Spanish regions lack. A pioneer of modern cuisine and the “Nueva Cocina Española” is Catalan chef Ferrán Adrià. Adrià, one of the most famous, most imitated and well respected chefs in the world. It is easy to recommend a visit to one of his wonderful restaurants, but of course you should be prepared for a hefty bill. Adrià is often associated with “molecular gastronomy”. However, he prefers to call his style “deconstructivist” and says his goal is to “provide unexpected contrasts of flavour, temperature and texture”.

Barcelona food has three staple ingredients however: tomato, garlic and olive oil. Due to its proximity to the Mediterranean, great seafood dishes are easy to find and there are also clear signs of the influences from neighbouring France and Valencia. Valencian influence can be seen in the variety of rice dishes that are available in Catalonia.

Some popular local dishes include “Pa amb tomàquet” (thick toasted rustic bread with garlic, salt and tomato rubbed in and olive oil drizzled on top), “Zarzuela” (a seafood casserole that can include any combination of different types of white fish, prawns, shrimp, squid, mussels, clams, crayfish or lobster with olive oil, tomato, lemon, paprika, white wine, sherry and other spices), “Fideua” (similar to paella, but instead of rice, the base is “Fideos” – short, skinny noodles) and finally “Crema Catalana” (a cold custard dessert with a crispy, caramelized sugar coating).

Barcelona is an amazing Spanish city in so many ways and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain.
Parallel Texts Barcelona Parte 4 Qué visitar

In English:

Barcelona is a city full of fantastic parks. Urban parks, historical parks, forest parks and botanical parks. “Montjuïc” park is the largest park, located on the mountain of the same name, followed by “Ciutadella” park, “Guinardó” park and “Güell” park, designed by Antoni Gaudí.

Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) was a Catalan architect who belonged to the Modernist Art Nouveau movement and was famous for his highly individualistic designs. He was born in the province of Tarragona in southern Catalonia and is widely acknowledged as a key element of what makes Barcelona so special. His most important works include “Park Güell” (1900–1914), “Casa Milà” (1905–1907), “Casa Batlló” (1905–1907) and, of course his unfinished masterpiece, “La Sagrada Família”. Gaudí was a devoted Catholic, to the point that in his later years, he abandoned secular work and devoted his life to Catholicism and his “Sagrada Família”.

Barcelona has seven beaches, totalling nearly three miles of coastline. “Sant Sebastià” and “Barceloneta” beaches are the largest, oldest and the most frequented beaches in Barcelona. The Olympic port separates them from the other city beaches: “Nova Icària”, “Bogatell”, “Mar Bella”, “Nova Mar Bella” and “Llevant”. These beaches were opened as a result of the city restructuring to host the 1992 Summer Olympics, when a great number of industrial buildings were demolished.

The city’s main commercial centre is found around “Plaça Catalunya” and “Avinguda Diagonal”. Barcelona has several commercial complexes, including “L’Illa” and “Diagonal Mar” in “Avinguda Diagonal”. Others include “La Maquinista”, “Glòries” and “Maremagnum” by the port. There are several impressive skyscrapers, the tallest being the Hotel Arts and its twin the Torre Mapfre, followed by Torre Agbar.
