BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) saw multiple fatalities both on land and water this last Father’s Day weekend. Three people were killed in a multiple-car accident, two died by drowning, and one died of an apparent suicide. In addition, 23 people were rescued by park rangers, who also responded to criminal incidents, including assault, theft, and drug use.

Lake Mead leadership is urging the public to keep safety and considerate behavior in the forefront when visiting. “Water levels are up, visitation is strong, and the majority of visitors are enjoying a safe, fun and healthy environment,” said Acting Superintendent Mike Gauthier. “Yet the tragic fatalities highlight the need to continually focus on safety and considerate behavior towards others when at the park.”

In addition to fatalities, rangers also responded to a rash of unsafe and unlawful incidents in the park. Park Rangers ask visitors to keep safety in mind at all times when at Lake Mead. Simple measures like wearing life jackets and driving the speed limit can go a long way toward saving lives. Know the rules, honor posted restrictions, avoid risky behavior, and be respectful of other visitors.

If you see unacceptable or criminal activity, call park Dispatch (702-293-8932) or 911 for emergencies. By practicing responsible recreation, park visitors can help staff to make a day at the lake a pleasant experience for everyone.

The post Lake Mead NRA experiences six fatalities over Father’s Day Weekend first appeared on The Standard Newspaper.

To keep the public safe from watercraft-related accidents this upcoming Fourth of July weekend, the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) and partner agencies will increase patrols on Arizona’s waterways from July 1-3 during Operation Dry Water.

This nationwide campaign focuses on decreasing the number of alcohol and drug-related incidents and fatalities and educating recreational boaters about the dangers of boating under the influence.

Law enforcement officers will remove dangerous and impaired operators from Arizona’s waterways during the holiday weekend. Officers may also give warnings or issue citations, including but not limited to safety equipment and life jacket violations.

“Boating or driving a car under the influence of alcohol or drugs are equally dangerous,” said Danny Rodriguez, AZGFD’s watercraft law administrator. “Our top priority is to create a safe environment for everyone enjoying Arizona’s waterways.”

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Fourth of July and Memorial Day holiday weekends account for more than one-third of all boating-related accidents and fatalities in the nation. One person died and six others were injured in watercraft-related accidents during the Fourth of July weekend last year in Arizona.

Arizona state law requires children 12 and under to wear a life jacket at all times while the boat is underway, and there must be one Coast Guard-approved life jacket on board for every passenger. In addition, a throwable flotation device, usually a cushion with handles or a ring buoy, is required for all watercraft longer than 16 feet (except for canoes and kayaks).

The post AZGFD to step up patrols for impaired boaters over holiday weekend first appeared on The Standard Newspaper.

YUCCA – An early morning semi-truck fire left some seared meat on Interstate 40.

At approximately 1:47 a.m. Sunday, Yucca Fire District was dispatched to a commercial vehicle fire at I-40 and the westbound off ramp of Santa Fe Ranch Road.

Golden Valley Fire Chief Dave Cunningham reported that YFD responded with a water tender and two personnel.

Desert Hills Fire District also responded with a fire engine and a water tender with three personnel. Upon arrival, crews found a tractor trailer fully engulfed in flames. The incident led to a brush fire that was quickly contained.

The contents of the trailer was packaged meat.

“Initial dispatch was a cattle truck and when we were responding all I could think of is, I hope the driver opened the gates,” said Oscar Lopez, one of the responding firefighters for the Yucca Fire Department. “As we were approaching all we could see was a fully involved tractor and trailer.”

Lopez made light of the situation.

“Well, it was loaded with cattle,” he said. “But they were already packaged and ready for the store. Forty pounds of briskets loaded from front to back in a 53-foot trailer.”

He also thanks his firefighter friends.

“Shoutout to Logan (Sweet) for doing the heavy work and to Desert Hills Fire Department for the mutual aid,” he said.

Cunningham said there were no injuries were reported and highway traffic was not affected.

KINGMAN – Pleas for probation were rejected Friday, June 23 in favor of prison for a Golden Valley woman held responsible for the traffic accident-related death of a young Kingman woman. Brittany Gresham, 32, pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of negligent homicide for the Dec. 5, 2022 death of Emily Sampson, 20.

Previous hearings revealed that Gresham was making progress in her effort to quit drugs and address mental health issues before the deadly crash. There was no dispute she had treatment related prescription drugs in her system when the crash occurred.

Gresham said her vision was obscured by sunlight when she pulled out onto Highway 68 from Verde Road in front of the oncoming 1988 pickup truck. Sampson, a passenger in the pickup, was dead of her injuries on scene.

“I’m sorry. I really am sorry,” said Gresham. “An accident can happen to anybody.”

The victim’s mother told Mohave County Superior Court Judge Lee Jantzen that the crash dashed her daughter’s dreams of getting married and becoming an environmental scientist. “She was going to change the world,” Sampson’s mother said.

Judge Jantzen recognized the defendant’s remorse and said he respected her lifestyle improvement efforts leading up to an accident that didn’t have to happen.

“You had this medicine in your system and you made a poor choice to pull out into the roadway,” Jantzen said. “When somebody’s life is lost like this, probation is not appropriate.”

Jantzen subsequently ordered a 2.5-year prison term, the maximum punishment possible under terms of the plea agreement.
