Today is my 13th wedding anniversary. Matt jokingly said that we should count our years “hotel style” and just skip to fourteen. Fortunately for us, we’re not superstitious and we’ve had more than our fair share of trials over the past thirteen years to know that difficulties in marriage just come when two people live life together—no unlucky numbers necessary! So what is the secret to a successful marriage and how do you make sure your marriage is blog-proof? Well, I certainly don’t have all the answers, but I know a few things that have worked for us and other successful bloggers.

How to Blog-Proof Your Marriage

There are a ton of articles on the web entitled “how to affair-proof your marriage” and I think many of the same tips apply to “blog-proofing” your marriage. Admit it. In the first few years of blogging chances are really good that you had a complete love affair with your blog! It was the first thing you thought of when you woke up in the morning; it was the last thing you thought of before bed at night. You sat by your computer hitting refresh, again and again, to see if anyone left you a new comment. You poured over your words, worshipped your latest creations, and virtually hugged your newest followers. Blogging is incredibly egocentric and can be very intoxicating and addictive.

1. Acknowledge the drug. Many of you might not know that I worked as a counselor for years before blogging. I’m going to dust off my degree today and put it to good use . Those of you who are depressed, have an attention deficit disorder, or are prone to addiction are at a higher risk for developing a blog addiction. Why? Because your brain tends to be lower in a naturally occurring stimulant called dopamine. And guess what helps give you an instant hit of dopamine? Blogging and social media! The constant feedback loop of “opportunities for reward” in blogging is non-stop. The latest emails in your inbox, the newest messages on your facebook and G+ page, the person who just tweeted you, the instagram pictures you have yet to check, the blog posts in your reader, the comments on your blog, the latest pins on Pinterest, and on and ON are all feeding the dopamine feedback loop. Did you know that our brains respond the same way to an internet addiction as they do to cocaine? Recognize that you might be addicted and set healthy limits on the time you spend plugged in.

2. Involve your spouse in your blog. When I began blogging four years ago, I had no goal and no real purpose. I just wanted a space to share my musings. I never intended for my blog to turn into a full-time business, and Matt & I never really talked about it. The income I have made from my blog has been a huge blessing to our family, but the amount of time and commitment involved has also been HUGE. As in any small business venture, the amount of time involved to keep things running can be all-consuming, and I could never do it all without Matt’s help.  Although Matt dislikes DIY’ing, he is supportive of my creative ventures and helps me with grocery shopping, laundry, and the kids. He is actually a rather gifted DIY’er and sometimes I am envious of all the “couple DIY’ers” out there and wish Matt would adopt my hobby as his own. However, it’s just not his thing, so I try to be very respectful of the DIY demands I place on him when I’m dreaming up a project.

I asked blog friends to weigh in on the topic of balancing blogging and marriage and here is what they had to say:

You have to have the support of your husband (to do it close to full time) or it won’t work. Thankfully my spouse sees my time online as “work” not play, but I still have to be sensitive to his needs. I turn off between 6 and 9 pm to spend time with family and then cozy up with the laptop at night on the sofa while we catch up on TV shows or the news. -Kate, Centsational Girl

My husband and I have gone round and round over the years and we have finally agreed to my business hours. I think that is key. Getting your husband on-board and choosing as a family how many hours mom will be working. We also made some financial decisions to help my blog too – my kids are gone from the house during mommy’s work hours. I also hired a house cleaner. It is worth the money I bring in, and I also shut the computer down when it is not my work hours. My kids have no idea I actually work, and I love that. -Becki, Infarrantly Creative

Even though my husband rarely actually reads NP, I still ask him a ton of questions about what I’m thinking and ideas and stuff–then, I actually try to listen to what he says. If he were to ever to say “hey you are spending entirely too much time on line” I’d want to be really sensitive to that. However, I think earning some money for all that time spent helps lessen that blow. It’s one thing when mom can’t get dinner on the table one night. It’s another thing when she can’t get dinner on the table but she already has take out ordered and paid for! -Nester, Nesting Place

My husband isn’t an active part of my blogging, but he’s active in DIY home improvement and decorating decisions. I think it helps that he has his own hobbies and interests, but we both share a passion for making our home our dream home and work well together. He enjoys the encouragement and feedback from the blogging community. He even picks up on certain comments/praise and reminds me that “our backsplash is to die for”. LOL! -Roeshel, DIY Showoff

3. Allow your man some space of his own. This suggestion came directly from Matt, “Make sure your husband has his own space to decorate.” The man cave ladies. It’s important. Matt’s “man cave” is actually our unfinished basement which he said, “isn’t quite as sanctified as I’d like it”. Sanctified? Wow. Such strong religious rhetoric for an unfinished-spidery-basement. LOL! But that just goes to show how important it is that he have a place all his own. If you and your husband don’t share the same decorating style, be sure that you are allowing him some say in some of your decorating decisions.

The blog is not the problem here. It is all the redecorating that comes with it. And the fact that my guy and I don’t exactly share the same decorating style. He has mellowed a bit and has allowed me more freedom actually thanks to the blog. He is so supportive of me and my blog that ‘it is for the blog’ has been a good argument to agree with certain things. And I guess my taste has moved to a more sleek more modern look too. -Marianne, Songbird

4. Make time for your spouse. You have heard it said a thousand times over, but it still remains true. You have to spend quality time connecting together on a regular basis if you want your marriage to be healthy. Close your computer, turn your phone to silent, and just enjoy talking, cuddling, kissing, and fill-in-the-blanking *wink, wink* regularly! Here are some tips from other full-time bloggers on how to make time for your man:

It is really tough to find a balance when you are a blogger (especially a DIY blogger!) I’ve found that scheduling a weekly walk with my husband for an hour gives us the time to connect and make him feel like he matters. We usually trade sitting with a neighborhood friend. She banks our hours and then she and her husband go out for several hours on their date night. -Brittany, Pretty Handy Girl

We work on the projects together, and have fun with the DIY projects, so the hard part has actually brought us closer together. I write during the day, so the “job” part of blogging is done while he’s at work. I do social media in 5 minute spurts – morning, noon, night, so I don’t get bogged down. Also having a smart phone is incredibly helpful for quick email, Facebook responses. My hubby and I always spend time together after Ridley is down for the night which keeps us connected. He fully supports my blog, so that’s incredibly helpful. If my husband asks me to close up the computer, I do. He rarely asks me so I know if he does that he is feeling neglected and wants to spend time with me. I also have him proof read my posts because I suck at grammar and that way he feel apart of it. I put the kids to bed, blog or edit photos for about an hour and then my husband and I veg on the couch talking or watching “our” shows. Hands down, your marriage is your first love and priority and is much more important than your blog. Hi everyone! I have a very quick tip for you tonight that I recently shared on facebook but it’s yummy enough to share here too. If you need an incredibly easy yet incredibly delicious gluten free cookie, allow me to introduce you to flour free peanut butter cookies. My mom used to make these for me as a kid because I couldn’t tolerate wheat and now I make them for my celiac inflicted kiddos. Warning: These taste so good you’ll want to eat them all!

Gluten (Flour) Free Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup of peanut butter

1 cup of sugar

1 egg

chocolate chips to taste

Mix the peanut butter, sugar, and egg together in a mixing bowl with a spoon. Mix in chocolate chips are just smush (yes…smush not smoosh) them on top. Bake in a preheated oven at 350* for 8-10 minutes. Enjoy!

Blogging has connected me to a world of amazing women who I now call friends. I’ve said this many times before, but our blog community is like a big family in many ways. We laugh, celebrate, encourage, dream, and even grieve together. Today one of our own is hurting and we have a tremendous opportunity to help provide comfort. Heidi, a gifted seamstress from the blog HoneyBear Lane, has asked for our help.

Tragedy struck Heidi’s extended family this week.  Heidi’s sister-in-law, Alice, gave birth to her third baby and then fell seriously ill with a terrible infection (strep A toxic shock syndrome.)  Alice fought hard, but in the end it was too much.  She passed away on Tuesday.  Heidi’s family is completely shocked, devastated, and heart broken. Heidi’s brother had just graduated with an MBA but did not have health insurance and he does not have a job. He is grieving, jobless, and is now a single father to his three children, one of which is a newborn baby.

Please read the following post and consider if you are able to help in some small (or great) way. Times are tough all around. If you’re unable to help financially at this time, I know that Heidi would appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and words of encouragement.

The loss of a loved one is a strange surreal reality. Life is completely normal except for one large, gaping hole. Each day the pain seems to become more real and defined as the actuality of what has happened sinks in.

Heidi of Honeybear Lane, lost her sister-in-law, Alice Hansen, this week to complications following the birth of her third baby. She fought a hard fight to stay on this earth with her husband and three little children who love her dearly. But God wanted her with Him and there is none who can stop Him. Her husband, Heidi’s brother, was left behind to take care of their two little boys and newborn daughter.

Heidi’s family opened a donation account for Alice and her family. This money will go towards funeral costs, residual medical expenses, and the costs of raising children without a mother or a job. Her brother is going through a very difficult thing and while nothing can replace the ache of losing his sweetheart, any sort of donation will help to ease the burdens a little.

My love for fashion is second only to my love for home decor! So today I thought it would be fun to share with you twenty-five casual summer outfits which caught my eye. Typically my summer wardrobe consists of sundresses, jeans, khakis, shorts, tees, tank tops and a ton of cute accessories! So what can we expect to see in summer fashion 2012? Well, I’m not a super trendy dresser so this post won’t be about the trends. However, here is what is inspiring my wardrobe this summer!

Fashion Tip: When you are putting together an outfit, implement the same rules for putting together a room or vignette. You are the blank canvas and just as when decorating a room, you want to think in terms of layers, colors, and textures. In the outfits I chose, you will see the same themes repeated over and over. Specifically you will see solid-colored bottoms (blue jeans, white jeans, blue jean shorts, white jean shorts and khaki shorts) mixed with mostly solid-colored tops. Think of  your tops and bottoms as your furniture or anchor pieces and your shoes, jewelry, and handbag as your toss pillows, vase of flowers, artwork, etc. If you start with good basics, you can easily change up your look with your accessories. Accessories make the outfit!

Preppy nautical looks in navy and white are hot this season. I personally love wearing navy and white and will often pair a belted cardigan over a sundress to provide more coverage. Matching your jewelry to your shoes and other accessories instead of your top or bottom is a fun way to add an accent color to your outfit.

I pride myself on being thrifty, and as a full-time blogger I am embarrassingly low-tech. Just to give you a sampling of how low-tech we truly are:

• We don’t have cable television.
• We own one television that is sporting a big backside and bunny ears.
• We don’t have a blue-ray player.
• We have one portable DVD player that we connect to said bunny-eared television.
• We don’t even have Netflix.
• We don’t own any gaming devices.
• We don’t have a stereo
• We don’t have a cell phone plan

Up until last week our cell phones were pay-as-you-go, T-Mobile phones from the year 2003. Below is a picture of the old relic. Yes, it still works but not all that well.After traveling for several weeks and being completely at the mercy of everyone else for all of my communication needs, I decided enough was enough. I came home and purchased two iphones. A 4S for myself and a 4 for the hubs. My credit card company, knowing me all too well, wouldn’t allow the transaction to go through and actually called me to ask if my card had been stolen…or if I had gone temporarily insane. I told them that it was the later .

So now I have officially joined this century, and I have to admit that I am LOVING it! Who knew it was so bright and shiny and convenient in this era? Yes, yes…..you did. Okay, so here are some of the apps I’ve downloaded and played around with so far:

In my defense, the two games somehow jumped on here when I sunk my phone. They were in my itunes from my kids’ 1st generation itouch and are now uploaded onto my phone.

As you can see, I have a lot of camera apps because I’m addicted to taking pictures. I adore my Nikon but it’s not super practical for taking pictures of the cute pillow on sale at Target, or of my entree at a restaurant, or of the paint I’m using for a project—you know, all the weird things we as bloggers take pictures of everyday! The camera is definitely my favorite aspect of my phone. Granted most of my pictures so far have looked something like this:

So what apps am I missing that are must haves?

I was told to get an Otterbox Defender case for my phone, but I was feeling truly reckless and instead went with this adorable case from Joss & Main. Perhaps I’ll be crying over this decision when my phone shatters into a million pieces but for now pretty is winning over practical!

And this is completely unrelated to my new love but might help out some of you procrastinators. I bought two of these Groupon deals today for Mother’s Day. It’s $20 for $40 worth of FTD flowers which I thought was pretty decent. Just be aware that they add $15 for shipping and handling so take that into account when you choose your flowers.

I love getting together for dinner with my extended family! We always have the best time catching up over some of the yummiest culinary creations. At our most recent family shin-dig, I was in charge of the cocktail hour. Here is the menu served:

• Simply Cranberry Cocktail Sangria
• Simply Cranberry Cocktail Mojitos (virgin and non)
• Cranberry Topped Brie with French Baguette Rounds
• Bacon-wrapped Apricots with Cranberry Dipping Sauce
• Strawberry Spinach Salad with Dried Cranberries, Feta, and Balsamic Vinaigrette

I’m a fan of Simply Orange® and Simply Lemonade® so was excited to try their latest addition to the Simply beverage family when they asked me to. Like their orange juice,Simply CranberryCocktail is gently pasteurized with no added preservatives and is always kept chilled from the time it’s blended to the refrigerated section of a store near you. The cocktail is made with 27% not-from-concentrate cranberry juice and has a good balance of sweetness and tartness. Best of all it tastes fantastic in many-a-mixed drink .

Here is the recipe for my Cranberry Sangria.

Ingredients:

• 1 bottle of red wine such as Zinfandel
• 5 cups of Simply Cranberry Cocktail
• 1 cup of orange juice
• 1 cup of orange liqueur
• 1/2 of an orange sliced
• 1 lime halved and sliced
• 1 green apple, cored, and sliced
• 1/2 cup of sliced strawberries

Combine all the ingredients and let chill for at least five hours. Serve over ice and enjoy!

In addition to Cranberry Sangria, I made virgin and non-virgin Cranberry Mojitos for everyone. We had trouble deciding which drink we liked better. Both were refreshing and delicious!

Ingredients:

• 3 wedges of lime
• 5 fresh mint leaves, washed
• ľ oz simple syrup (to make simple syrup take equal parts sugar and water and boil for a minute on the stove; cool and chill in refrigerator beforehand)
• cubed ice
• 1 oz Simply Cranberry Cocktail
• 2˝ oz vodka
• 1 oz soda water (or lemon/lime soda for a sweeter taste)

Directions:

1. Combine the lime wedges, mint leaves and simple syrup in a bowl and crush with a mortar and pestle (or back of a fork).
2. Transfer ingredients to a shaker and fill the shaker with ice.
3. Add the vodka and Simply CranberryCocktail.
4. Shake vigorously.
5. Pour all of the ingredients into a wine glass without straining.
6. Top with soda water and garnish with mint.

For our hors d’oeuvres, I first served some Cranberry Topped Brie with French Baguette Rounds. To make, simply heat 1/2 cup of dried cranberries and 1/2 cup of Simply CranberryCocktail in a pan over medium heat stirring frequently until mixture is syrupy. Pour cranberry mixture over your brie and serve with crackers or french bread.

And finally, I served the easiest yet most amazing appetizer that is a must try: Bacon-wrapped Apricots with Cranberry Dipping Sauce (recipe modified from Yummly.com).

Ingredients:

• 2 t cornstarch (mixed with) 2 t water
• 3/4 t mustard (grain)
• 1 1/2 t brown sugar (packed)
• 1/2 t ground nutmeg
• 12 sliced bacon (sliced in half)
• 24 dried apricots
• 1 1/2 cups Simply CranberryCocktail

These recipes were all incredibly easy to make and the continuity of our Simply CranberryCocktail theme was so much fun! I hope you’re inspired to throw your own “cranberry party”!

Today is a lazy Sunday afternoon and I was craving some chocolate chip cookies! Have you ever made chocolate chip skillet cookies before? They are incredibly easy to make. All you need is your favorite cookie recipe and a two inch deep skillet!

Butter your skillet thoroughly and make sure you don’t miss the sides of the pan.

Any chocolate chip cookie recipe will work for skillet cookies! Just make sure you don’t overload your skillet with dough and you’ll be good. Your recipe should be for about 24 cookies, in a 10 inch pan for best results. If you’re feeling lazy, you can even use a mix. I like oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, so I used the recipe located at the bottom of the post however I reserved some of the dough (and I might have ate a bunch of it too:).) The recipe at the bottom makes 3 dozen large cookies which will be a bit too much for the skillet.

Press your dough into your buttered skillet. Tip: If you want your cookie to look prettier, add some chocolate chips to the top of the dough and then press down with a spatula. 

Bake in a 350* preheated oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Allow the skillet to cool for a few minutes before cutting.

Enjoy! The cookies will taste more like chocolate chip bars than traditional cookies. They are excellent served warm with a dollop of ice cream and chocolate sauce! Yum .

Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar (I think the dark makes them richer.)
1/2 cup butter, softened (1 stick is half a cup. The original recipe calls for 2 sticks but wowza! That’s a lot of butter. Less butter will result in a crumbly, softer dough but it will still taste yummy.)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
2 cups oats (I like to grind mine up in my Magic Bullet a bit to make the oats finer.)
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (You can use whole wheat if you want. I use King Arthur All Purpose Flour.)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1. Heat oven to 350°F. In large bowl, stir brown sugar and butter until blended. Stir in vanilla and egg until light and fluffy. Stir in oats, flour, baking soda and salt; stir in chocolate chips.
2. Press about 2/3 of the dough into buttered skillet. Use the rest of the dough for traditional cookies, or freeze for later use. If you use all of the dough, adjust your baking time accordingly and watch for overflow. You will be making very thick cookies.
3. Bake 30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly before cutting.
