Celebrate the culture of the Philippines during Memphis in May

Memphis in May hosts the biggest Memphis events. For 2012 the theme is A Salute to the Philippines. The festival includes exhibits around Memphis featuring Filipino art, photography, and textiles. In addition, lectures by visiting dignitaries will be given.
If music and performance is more your speed, check out the folk art dancing and the rock band Sponge Cola performing at the Beale Street Music festival. The Sunset Symphony features soul music and fireworks during Memphis in May. If you are into the movies, contemporary and historic, take advantage of the films about the Philippines that will be shown at theatres around the city.

Memphis wouldn’t be Memphis without barbecue, so don’t miss the annual World Championship Barbecue Contest during Memphis in May. Hundreds of teams compete for over $100,00 in prize money and bragging rights. But the real winners are the folks who get a plateful of sizzling meat.

To top it all off the Peabody Hotel will be the site for the annual International Gala. This year the gala will honor the Philippines as the “Pearl of the Orient” at the gala filled with local celebrities, Filipino dignitaries and the upper crust of Memphis society. Wildlife Thrives at The Greenline at Shelby Farms Park

Spend some time close to nature at Shelby Farms Park.

This impressive stretch of green is not maintained by tax dollars. It thrives on the support of great Memphis residents like you.

The trail is paved and runs from Tillman St. at Walnut Grove Rd. in Midtown to Farm Rd. at Mullins Station Rd. at Shelby Farms Park. You can access the trail at eight different points near Tillman Street., Highland Street, High Point Terrace, Graham Street, Waring Road, Podesta Street, Sycamore View Road, and Farm Road at Shelby Farms Park.

So what’s the big deal?

The park provides habitat to a variety of wildlife, with the forest, meadows and pine woods attracting more than 200 species of birds, bobcats, deer, reptiles, rabbits, minks, fish, muskrats, beavers, squirrels, and foxes in the heart of one of America’s largest urban parks.

More than 1 million people can access Shelby Farms Park with a 20-minute drive. They all come to hike and bike the trails, ride horses, play disc golf and enjoy many other outdoor activities.

Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park” Coming to the Bartlett Performing Arts Center

: Enjoy Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park” at the Bartlett Performing Arts Center

The TheatreStage Series at the Bartlett Performing Arts Center continues on May 10 with a performance of Neil Simon’s classic play Barefoot in the Park, 3663 Appling Road. The Performing Arts Center is one of many good reasons to live in the thriving Bartlett, TN area outside Memphis.

The play follows the storyline of Corie and Paul who are meant for each other. Or are they? With the honeymoon over, a much too small apartment a zillion flights up, no heat, a wacky upstairs neighbor, and a well-meaning but muddled mother, the made-in-heaven-marriage gets hysterically complicated.

Admission to the play is $10 and five performances are scheduled May 10-13. Call the box office at 901.385.6440.

The Bartlett Performing Arts and Conference Center hosts many performances as well as educational courses throughout the year including the Youth Citizens Police Academy, the Missoula Children’s Theatre and much more.

Memphis Update: New Bike Lanes/Road Markings On Neighborhood Streets

Some new symbols are appearing on the roads surrounding many East Memphis apartments close to Bartlett TN that you’ll want to understand, whether you primarily drive or bike. The City of Memphis has recently added shared lane markings and bike lanes to many of its streets, which can be a boon for both cyclists and drivers – if you know how to use them.

A shared lane marking serves multiple purposes. It reminds drivers to expect bicycles in the lane and to yield to cyclists in front of them. If you’re on a bike, ride directly over the shared lane markings, which position you safely away from the opening doors of parked cars and make you easier to see at intersections.
When on a bike, you can riding in the separate bicycle lane where present, which can make passing safer for both you and motorists on the road. When you’re driving a car, keep an eye out for bicyclists about to merge into your lane to avoid obstacles or make left turns, and never park in a bike lane.

Both drivers and cyclists should always remember to signal and observe all traffic laws, and keep the road safe for everyone!

Treat Your Car to a Wash at The Summit

Amazingly enough, your life always seems to feel so much more together when you are driving around in a clean and shiny car. Now that the temperatures are starting to warm up, there is no better time than the present to get your car looking in tip top shape with a wash. A major perk to living in The Summit apartments is that the community features an onsite car care station exclusively available to residents. Now you have no excuse to drive around in a dirty car!

Listed below are some helpful car washing tips for the best results courtesy of Consumer Reports:

Don’t let bugs, bird poop, and other pollutants pile up on your car for weeks before giving it a wash. Instead, try to take advantage of our community’s car care center on a weekly basis as it will make your car easier to clean and will always look good.
While tempting because it’s inexpensive, never wash your car with dishwashing liquid as it is harsh on your car’s paint. Instead, invest in an affordable carwash soap that you can pick up at your local auto parts shop.
Be sure to clean out your sponge throughout the wash as you do not want to cake grimy mud back onto your car.
Always wash your car from the top on down so that you can be sure that you remove all of the soap and dirt.
Ideally, you will want to use a chamois to dry your car when you are finished so that you don’t have unwanted watermarks all over your car.

Make Moving a Pleasure: Resident Resources Provided By The Summit!

You’ve taken a tour of The Summit Apartments, loved what you saw and signed a lease! The next step is naturally to plan your move-in. While moving in essence can be painstakingly tiring process, a little bit of organization and creativity, can take the dread out of the planning.

Create a positive experience with some of the below pointers we give to future residents:

Make a visual planner/graphic

You’ve seen those virtual space planners online. The Summit has one on our floorplans page. You can take it a step further and this on your own. Use graph paper and measure your furniture and then cut out pieces that will scale to the proportion that you’ve drawn.

Don’t over anticipate

This leads to over planning and over spending. The worst thing is to move in with too much unnecessarily-bought items. Before you buy a new piece of furniture or accessories arrange the pieces that you already have so that you do not add clutter to your space.

Use Moving Tools

If you have to move heavy furniture by yourself and do not have access to a furniture dolly place a piece of heavy fabric under the legs of your furniture and use that to assist you.
