Sources are telling AllThingsD that Amazon is advising their developers to build apps for a 1280x800 resolution display, which suggests a new version will be coming soon with a display similar to the recently announced Google Nexus 7. The current Kindle Fire, released in November of 2011, has a 1024x600 display. The change not only increases the resolution, which should provide sharper images and text, but also changes the aspect ratio to be less "tall" in portrait mode. The new Fire is also rumored to be thinner, lighter, and to have a camera. With Google's release of the Nexus 7, and Amazon and Apple both rumored to have similar sized products coming soon, this fall will be a battle of the giants "tiny" tablets.

Worldwide, tablet sales will surpass laptop sales by 2016 says market research firm DisplaySearch. They expect total "mobile PC" sales, which includes tablets and laptops, to more than double by 2016, with tablet computers seeing more growth, and overtaking laptop sales at that time. Mature markets like North America, Japan and Western Europe, which currently make up 66% of global sales, are driving this growth. "While the lines between tablet and notebook PCs are blurring, we expect mature markets to be the primary regions for tablet PC adoption. New entrants are tending to launch their initial products in mature markets. Services and infrastructure needed to create compelling new usage models are often better established in mature markets."

Both Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal have articles about a rumor of an impending release by Apple of a smaller iPad that would compete with Amazon's Kindle and Google's Nexus 7. Anonymous sources from Apple's component suppliers say the tablet would have a screen smaller than 8" that would not be of the "Retina" quality of the new iPad. Though similar rumors have existed for more than a year, the supporting evidence seems to be increasing. Though many say it won't happen since the iOS interface would need major changes to adapt to a new resolution, strong rumors suggest an iPhone of a different proportion will be released, requiring the same changes. Will Apple add a 16:9 layout that works both on the new iPhone and a new iPad? We should know within a few months!

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is no longer available for sale due to a lawsuit by Apple. How did it happen? Apple is suing Samsung, saying that Samsung's "blatant copying" of the iPad violates Apple patents. Samsung initially defeated an attempt by Apple to halt sales of the tablet, but Apple appealed that decision. On June 26th of 2012 a U.S. District Judge from California ordered a halt to sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Samsung filed an appeal to the decision, which was rejected on July 2nd. Though Samsung has further appeal opportunities, this may mean the tablet remains unavailable until after the trial, which is set for July 30th.
