Legendary New Haven educator celebrated with drive-by parade

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The Elm City community celebrated a legendary New Haven educator Sunday.

Jeffie Frazier is a Louisiana native who came to New Haven and taught in the Elm City’s public schools starting in 1966.

She eventually became principal of the Helene W. Grant School on Goffe Street and later the combined Wexler-Grant.

Sunday was her birthday and her community came together to honor one of their own.

“She led from the African proverb: ‘it takes a village to raise a child.’ And in such, she ensured to implement policies that would provide support and the supporting efforts of our youth in our community,” explained Shenae Draughn, president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. “She is a living legend in the City of New Haven.”

Frazier and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are both a part of AKA.

Students at New Haven school visit teachers, receive supplies to help with remote learning

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– After weeks of remote learning, students at one New Haven school got to see their teachers in person Friday morning. They got some other nice surprises, too.

Thanksgiving is not until next week, but there was a lot to be thankful for at New Haven’s Wexler Grant School. Students and parents got supplies and other goodies to make the distance learning thing a little easier.

Usually, kids are looking forward to not going to school for Thanksgiving. It’s all different this year.

“We know that we are remote learning right now and kids are not coming back into school,” explained principal David Diah. “So what we wanted to do was give back to the community.”

By giving the kids some things to make learning from home a little easier.

“We got them learning on the Chromebooks that they needed,” Diah said. “Now we’re giving them all the materials, the books, the supplies, the pencils, the paper, the whiteboard to make learning at home as smooth a transition as if they were in school.”

Helping out is the historically African-American sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha [Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter] with extras like water bottles and hand sanitizer.

“The children are happy to see their teachers, happy to see us and a little surprise, and their parents are happy that we thought about them as well,” said school speech pathologist and Alpha Kappa Alpha member Sondi Jackson.

As happy as the students are to see the teachers, the teachers are just as happy to see their students. Even though remote classes are still held every day, it’s tough to maintain a real connection without seeing the kids in person.

“So what you’re seeing right now is actually students and families teaming up with teachers and staff and that connection is still there, and we just wanted to give that day of joy for everybody,” Diah said.

What everybody wants to know is when they are going to be back in school for real. Unfortunately, nobody knows that. That is up to the Coronavirus numbers.

In order to do so, we partner with organizations engaged in assisting refugees and their families to integrate into American life. These organizations are involved in providing, inter alia, literacy classes, educational training, and other necessary transitional support.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter, continues to serve the greater New Haven area by supporting Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services (IRIS), under the framework of the Refugees in America Assistance Program (RAAP). The primary purpose of RAAP is to help ease the transition of refugees to America. Throughout the last year, our IRIS programming included donations of bilingual dictionaries, art supplies, children’s books, and also bringing awareness to how race plays a role in the treatment of black and brown refugees. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of senior activities for graduating high school students, we also joined IRIS in helping to celebrate the accomplishments of graduating seniors by purchasing (12) twelve $50 Amazon gift cards. We encourage you to join our efforts in supporting organizations such IRIS by donating time and/or resources.

MLK Conference Turns 50, With Fire(women)

MARKESHIA RICKS PHOTO
Veteran firefighter Erika Bogan loves telling children, especially girls, about what it’s like to be a firefighter. And she’s passing that passion on to new firefighters like Shy Floyd (pictured).

Both women were holding court with a group of 7-year-olds Monday during the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr conference at Wexler-Grant Community School.

People braved extreme cold and ice for the 50th year of the conference that celebrates the civil rights leader’s life with a day on rather than a day off. The first conference was held Jan. 15, 1969, on the same block at the former (and future) Dixwell Community “Q” House.

African-American professionals like Bogan and Floyd come each year to share their expertise on topics ranging from fire safety to public speaking skills. The female firefighters are two of 14 women in the department.

Bogan and Floyd helped youngsters learn about what to do if they’re ever in a fire. The women, who are based at the Lighthouse Road and East Grand firehouses, respectively, also did a little show and tell, and a little dress up. After having Floyd show the students how firefighters get in gear, Bogan also showed them her hat and explained the many stickers she has on it.

In addition to Sponge Bob, there’s a Wonder Woman sticker and a “No Whining” sticker, she said “because sometimes there’s a lot of whining.” Yandel, 7, (pictured above with Bogan) was the first to step up and try on Bogan’s gear. He learned pretty quickly that it’s heavy.

Firefighter Darnell Tucker, who has been with the city fire department for five years, is based at the Dixwell firehouse. He invited the children and their parents to drop by the station for a tour any time.

The annual MLK celebration draws in children from all over the city with opportunities to get fit with yoga and Zumba and to brush up on their tie-tying and public speaking skills. Adults also often stick around for tips on topics like funeral planning and financial literacy.

This year they had the opportunity to create art with Wexler-Grant art teacher Rebecca LeQuire, trying their hands at creating black and white paintings of King, Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama.

They also met some of the people representing them at the state and federal levels. Gov. Ned Lamont, Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal dropped in on Monday to meet event organizers like Sondi Jackson, who chairs the event, and other volunteers who help make it happen.

The Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha spearheads the event each year with the support of the Elm City Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Epsilon Iota Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., the Eureka Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Delta Phi Chapter, Pi Lambda Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, and the New Haven Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.

Workshops weren’t the only items on the menu. There was time for shopping with artist Jo-Ann Thompson-Claybourne…

‘Tis The Healing Season

'Tis The Healing Season

by MARKESHIA RICKS | Dec 4, 2018 12:11 pm

Healing comes in many forms. Some find it in dance. Others in prayer. The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. brought several forms of self-care together in an inaugural “The Art of Healing” luncheon.

The Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter of AKAs, which serves the Greater New Haven area, gathered about 200 of its closest friends at Cascades Fine Catering Sunday for an intimate afternoon of celebration to honor Congress’ newest member from Connecticut, U.S. Rep.-elect Jahana Hayes, along with stalwarts of the community who have made the well-being of others their life work.

They also gathered to raise money for scholarships and to glean tips for coping with the holiday season from psychologist and founder of Therapy for Black Girls, Joy Harden-Bradford a website and podcast dedicated to helping black women access quality mental health care.

Chapter President Khalilah L. Brown-Dean said the luncheon was inspired by a recent opportunity she had to interview the acclaimed actor Danny Glover. Brown-Dean, an associate professor of political science a Quinnipiac University said she was taken with his answer to a question about finding peace in uncertain times.

“Danny Glover says we find peace in art,” she said. “His quote is that ‘Art is a way of understanding, a way of confronting issues and your own feelings all within the realm of the capacity that it represents.’”

She said the best gift that people can give, particularly during the holidays is “the gift of a whole self.”

“We cannot build strong communities unless we invest in building strong people,” she said.

New Haven AKAs honored people from the Greater New Haven area who are busy building strong people, including Enola G. Aird, founder and president of Community Healing Network; Delphin-Rittmon, commissioner of the Connecticut State Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services; Kate Mattias, executive director of NAMI Connecticut; and Michael Taylor, Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center CEO.

Congresswoman-elect Hayes was celebrated for her recent historic win, having catapulted from being recognized by President Barack Obama as the 2016 National Teacher of the Year to political rock star status. The New Haven AKAs along with the Waterbury Chapter of The Links Inc. and the New Haven Chapter of The Girl Friends Inc. honored Hayes with a Christmas ornament representing the heart of Connecticut and a box of prayers.

“Being first can sometimes be lonely and being first can come with an overwhelming set of expectations,” Dean-Brown said. “When you are the first you don’t have the luxury of just representing the people in your district.”

Dean-Brown said she wanted Hayes to know that all those gathered were praying for her and that when she journeys to Washington D.C. She wasn’t doing it alone.

“We want her to take out one of those cards and be forever reminded that she is never alone,” she said.

Hayes said she didn’t set out to become a member of Congress but now that she is she knows it is exactly where she is meant to be.

“I never once thought about what this meant for me always recognized so much bigger than me,” she said. “I really had to give myself permission to even begin to imagine myself or my name coming after the word ‘Congresswoman.’”

Once she did that, she said the confirmation of what it’s all about happened while she was recently at orientation in Washington, D.C.

“I know I’m supposed to be here, because even though I question how I got here and how I’m going to make this work and what this looks like, last week we had orientation, and I was walking through the halls of the Capitol,” she said, “I thought I was lost. I was in the tunnel. I looked up and there were five young people running toward me. And they all looked like me. And the one girl started to cry. She said, ‘I’m so happy to see your face in this tunnel.’ I mean this is after hours, you had to be credentialed to be there. And she said, ‘You’re the one I’ve been waiting for in this tunnel.’”

Hayes said it’s not lost on her that she now has the keys to that tunnel and can hold the door open for the girl, and the other people with her that day.

“That’s what’s supposed to happen,” she added. “This is real. And it is happening. I know today more than I have ever known in my life that it was exactly the way it was supposed to happen.”

Finding Your CHEER

Harden-Bradford, or “Dr. Joy” as those who listen to her podcast know her, used her first trip to Connecticut to get right to the heart of the matter for most people: How to cope during the holidays.

“We are smack dab in the middle of what some of you have been waiting for all year long and some of you may have been dreading all year long,” she said. “The holidays can bring up a lot of stuff for us. There’s a lot that goes on. There are a lot of expectations.”

She offered the following tips to help you CHEER up:

C - Create new traditions especially if you can’t be with your family or you’ve recently lost a loved one. She urged them to resist the urge to simply forgo the holiday celebration. “When we avoid things we never teach ourselves that we can get through it,” Harden-Bradford said.

H- Honor your feelings. “Allow yourself to feel whatever you’re feeling. Give yourself permission to experience your feelings without actually judging them.”

E - Consider gifting experiences over things. It’s tempting to spend money on things to show people how much you love them, she said. But it’s the experiences that you and your loved ones share and the memories you make that will matter in the long run.

E- Setting realistic expectations. “You can’t do it all,” Harden-Bradford reminded the crowd. “Make sure you’re giving yourself some time. It is important especially during the holiday to say no.”

R - Schedule time for reflecting and setting your intentions for the new year. Harden-Bradford in addition to being a busy professional is a wife and mother of a 5-year-old and a 2-year old. She asked people to raise their hand if the best gift someone could give them was peace and quiet. Everyone in the room raised their hands.

“We’re often doing so many things during this time of year,” she said. “To get this time to reflect, you may have to move some stuff around. Whatever it is you need to do figure out how to give yourself the gift of stillness this season.

“Schedule some time to simply be still,” she said.

AKAs To Host ‘Sights & Sounds’ Gala Brunch

AKAs To Host ‘Sights & Sounds’ Gala Brunch

The Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will kick off the holiday season with a “Sights and Sounds of the Season” gala brunch Dec. 2.

The brunch, which will feature live music by local artists and a fur fashion show, will be at noon at the Aria Wedding and Banquet Facility in Prospect. Tickets are $65 and 100 percent of the proceeds will be used to fund scholarships and community service programs in the Greater New Haven, Meriden, and Waterbury communities.

“Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated places a particular emphasis on student development and achievement,” Dr. Khalilah L. Brown-Dean, chapter president, said in a press release. “The funds raised from this event help us ensure that financial need doesn’t prevent bright scholars from pursuing success.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is the nation’s oldest sorority founded by college-trained black women. Locally, the Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter is comprised of more than 90 women who fulfill the sorority’s mission through a number of innovative programs. Those programs include:

—Project A.S.C.E.N.D. program for young girls
—the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Conference
—civic engagement activities
—health awareness seminars
—cultural appreciation events

To date, the chapter has disbursed more than $150,000 for scholarships and book awards including donations to the United Negro College Fund. Unlike many other scholarships offered locally, the chapter’s signature Theta Epsilon Omega Scholarship is renewable for up to four years and provides important financial continuity throughout a student’s college years. Each year chapter members devote more than 5,000 volunteer hours to various service initiatives. The chapter actively seeks to partner with other individuals and organizations in the community who share their commitment to service.

New Haven sorority takes giving to heart, providing help to many

New Haven sorority takes giving to heart, providing help to many

Sorority meets needs of families, children, the hungry

By Shahid Abdul-Karim, New Haven Register

Wednesday, November 23, 2016

NEW HAVEN >> Talia Morton has a lot to be thankful for.

She was surprised when the Theta Epsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. decided to provide the Thanksgiving Day meal for her entire family last year.

“They brought us so much food that (it) lasted the following month,” said Morton, 38, a Newhallville resident who is married with nine children.

It was a critical time for the Mortons. Her husband had been laid off from work and he is still seeking employment.

“I asked, (and) they were there for my family in time of our need,” she said.

This type of philanthropy is part of the sorority chapter’s Adopt-a-Family program and is one among several that aim to engage in a variety of activities to uplift families throughout the year, but especially during the holiday season.

Adopt-a-Family serves as an arm of the Family Strengthening initiative.

For the Mortons, the program has been directly beneficial as the chapter goes above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to giving, Morton said.

“They’ve helped me twice,” said Morton. “They have come through for us like they have done for so many other families in the community.”

And for some city residents, obtaining basic necessities is not easy.

According to U.S. Census figures, 26.3 percent of city residents live below the poverty level and the city’s unemployment rate is 12.4 percent, which is higher than the national average.

In 2014, 13 percent of the Greater New Haven population lived in poverty, meaning they were in households with annual incomes below the federal poverty line, according to a report by United Way of Greater New Haven.

The report noted that the federal poverty line is equivalent to $15,730 per year for a family of two and $23,850 for a family of four.

While many area families continue to struggle, sorority chapter President Cathy R. Patton said the goal is to support the less fortunate.

“This program has been a part of who we are and what we really do for some time now,” said Patton, who’s been with the sorority for 34 years.

“We think it’s important that we support the family structure in the home, by providing what others may take for granted,” she said. “A lot of families just don’t have the basic necessities.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha Soroity Inc. was established in 1908 on the campus of Howard University, as the first Greek-lettered organization for black college women.

Its mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of service to all mankind.

The New Haven chapter was chartered in 1965 as a graduate chapter with 15 charter members.

Patton believes the city is resource-rich, yet, “in terms of collaboration of organizations, we’re poor.”

“I think we can be stronger if we did more things together to impact more families,” she said.

As a part of a community collaboration, next month the chapter will partner with the WYBC radio station and the New Haven Firebirds for a community-wide coat drive.

In January, the chapter will hold its annual community-wide Martin Luther King Jr. Conference at Wexler-Grant School, which Patton says has the strongest impact in the community.

“It’s our favorite,” said Patton. “We get to take all of our programs that we do throughout the year and conduct workshops all in that day.”

Some of the other initiatives include the A.S.C.E.N.D. Youth Enrichment Program, which is the sorority’s signature youth program; education; health; economic empowerment; and the AKA Connection.

The chapter also provides monetary support to the Connecticut Food Bank, American Cancer Society, Emergency Shelter Management Services and Children in Placement, among other organizations.

In addition to those initiatives, the chapter also adopted Ella B. Scantlebury Playground at Wexler Grant Park in an effort to help provide a better environment for children.

“It’s part of our community impact day(s). We want children to feel safe and play in a clean environment,” said Patton. “We have to monitor it all year and make sure it stays clean.”

While the chapter doesn’t have a physical office, it holds its meetings at Wexler-Grant School.

School Principal Sabrina Breland said the sorority is invaluable to the school community.

“They do so much for us here in terms of activities for the students,” said Breland. “They supply clothing for our students; hats, gloves and coats,” she said.

Breland said the chapter has a strong presence at the school and is highly active during school events throughout the year.

Chapter member Sondi Jackson knows exactly how the programs directly affect students and their needs. She serves as the school’s speech pathologist.

“The children have been exposed to the AKA’s (members) for a number of years. Students have seen us at all different levels within the community,” said Jackson.

For example, in previous years, the chapter adopted the kindergarten classrooms at the school and held activities for pupils.

One other project, according to Jackson, which she said worked well, was giving bicycles to students who came to school early in preparation for the Connecticut Mastery Test.

“In the areas where it relates to education and basic needs, we’ve been to the table serving the community,” said Jackson, who has been part of the sorority since 1981.

Among other issues in the city for families is food insecurity.

In New Haven County in 2014, 13.9 percent, or 119,880 residents, were food-insecure, and it would take more than $64 million to meet the needs of New Haven County’s food-insecure population, or $17.62 per week for each food-insecure person, according to a study done by the Connecticut Food Bank.

The figures remain the highest among Connecticut’s eight counties. Although 2013 data showed a higher 14.1 percent food-insecurity rate than the 13.9 percent rate reported for 2014, there is a $1.4 million increase in the food budget shortfall, from the figure of $62.64 million reported in 2013. The average New Haven County food budget shortfall increased by 60 cents per week, or 3.5 percent, for each food-insecure person, the report said.

Chapter member and Greater New Haven NAACP Branch President Dori Dumas said families are challenged with putting food on their tables.

“We do these programs because there is a need and we understand our community,” said Dumas, who has been a member of the sorority for more than 20 years.

“We know families that don’t have food; not just during the holidays, but year-round,” she said.

When the chapter adopts a family, Dumas said, no one is left out.

“We provide food, clothing and toys; everyone gets something,” said Dumas. “We shop like we’re shopping for members of our family.” .

For the holidays two years ago, the chapter saw the need to make the Mortons’ Christmas one they’d remember.

“They bought my kids lots of stuff; when they do things for you, they don’t play games,” said Morton.

“They’re also very good people to talk to,” she said. “They’re understanding and don’t judge you based on your circumstances; they look at you as a human being.”

Greater New Haven NAACP gets out the vote

By Renee Chmiel, News 8 Reporter

Published: November 6, 2016, 11:22 pm

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Volunteers at NAACP branches across the country are pushing to get out the vote. Dozens of people spent the day reaching out to voters at the Greater New Haven Branch of the NAACP.

The Get Out To Vote campaign kicked off Sunday, but the organization has been preparing for it all year long. It got more than 300 people to register to vote over the past year. Organizers have a message for all of them.

“It’s one thing to be registered but the other part is you actually have to go to the polls and to vote,” said Roxana Walker-Canton, Political Action Committee Chair for the Greater New Haven NAACP.

Volunteers spent the day getting that message out. They made phone calls and canvassed neighborhoods. They focused on areas that have had low voter turnout in previous years. Campaign organizers say more people are interested this year, however. They say movements like Black Lives Matter have had an impact.

“Those have politicized a lot of people who haven’t been politicized and definitely with the younger voters,” said Walker-Canton.

Volunteers handed out information or left it in mailboxes. They spent time talking with voters; some had already voted. They want to make sure everyone gets to the polls on Tuesday.

“Right now a lot of people think it’s not so important,” said Walker-Canton. “They don’t know that their vote really counts.”

They’ll be helping voters get to the polls by providing rides. Volunteers are also gathering information from voters about what issues are important to them. They’re looking to use it to help them past Election Day.

“It’s going to be used to help us be able to go out into the community and listen a little bit more to their concerns,” said Jeffie Frazier [Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter, AKA Connection Committee, Chair], who was in the office working to get out the vote.

Volunteers will be working Monday and Tuesday and they’re hoping more will join them to help them reach out to voters.

New Haven Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter has 50-year history of serving the community

Born and raised in New Haven, the three women are part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Theta Epsilon Omega New Haven chapter.

Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on Jan. 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University.

“It’s really based on the principles of sisterhood and service,” chapter President Nicole Murphy said.

Theta Epsilon Omega has been serving the community for nearly 50 years. Members started their work out of the Dixwell Community Q House and moved to Wexler Grant School after the Q House closed.

Their work is based on a vision set forth by the sorority’s international president every four years. Their most recent efforts are based off the 2010-14 Global Leadership through Timeless Service initiative set forth by President Carolyn House Stewart.

The chapters localize the international initiative to reflect the unique needs of their communities. This July, a new set of initiatives will be unveiled at the annual convention.

“Whatever the thrust has been internationally, we’ve been able to do it locally, and I would say, do it well,” Sondi Jackson said.

Jackson is a New Haven native and has worked in New Haven Public Schools for more than 20 years. She is currently a speech pathologist at Wexler Grant School.

Some of the chapter’s most notable work over the last four years has included the continuation of two scholarships, the Emerging Young Leaders program and a focus on health issues that disproportionately impact communities of color.

The chapter has worked with the National Kidney Association, American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association and pushed for civic engagement in New Haven.

“The majority of our membership is really from New Haven and really has a strong desire and will to be able to give back to students and families in New Haven,” Murphy said.

Murphy, a James Hillhouse High School graduate, works in Hartford but decided to join the New Haven chapter specifically to interact with New Haven residents.

“I work in Hartford and have had opportunities to do community service in that area but it just didn’t feel as right to me,” she said. “I didn’t connect as much as I connect with the community service opportunities that are here. I want to be able to interact with students at Hillhouse High School.”

The two scholarships continued this year include a nursing scholarship, the Susan Moore Lincoln Scholarship, at Gateway Community College, and the Theta Epsilon Omega AKA Scholarship, a four-year, renewable scholarship for high school seniors, valued at $4,000.

Theta Epsilon Omega holds about four fundraisers a year to support the scholarships and other activities. Murphy said the relationship with New Haven Public Schools has been “invaluable” because it allows the women to borrow resources and utilize venues.

“We’re very much focused on developing and preserving communities of color, so any issues or any needs that are affecting communities of colors ... Be it in the realm of health, be it in the realm of economic security, be it in the realm of social justice …” Murphy said.

One program the group is particularly proud of is the international Emerging Young Leaders program.

The Emerging Young Leaders program is replicated across the United States in about 981 chapters of AKA. To date, about 15,000 girls have enrolled in the program across the U.S. In New Haven, about 20 girls have come through the program since 2010.

Taryn Anderson, co-chairwoman of New Haven’s EYL, said EYL targets girls in sixth through eighth grade because it’s a “pivotal time in young women’s development.”

To qualify for the program, the young women must have decent grades and an interest in community service and leadership.

“That is our focus with them, encouraging their leadership skills and also helping them to develop a larger sense of community and community service,” Anderson said.

The program featured “academies” on civic engagement, time management skills, public speaking, leadership and other areas.

Tanaiza Glass, 12, heard about the program from a family mother and figured it would be a good experience.

“I did take away how to be a polite and respectful young lady, how to carry myself, how to have etiquette, mostly just how to be a young lady,” Glass said.

Recognizing changing times, Anderson said the program covers some of the newer challenges youth face, such as cyber bullying and developing an appropriate online identity. Students are taught to be aware of what they post on social media and are taught about “safety and safe space” so they know where they can go and who they can talk to if they feel unsafe.

Students also worked on community service projects, collecting and packaging toiletries to send to U.S. military members deployed to Afghanistan. The young women later participated in community service alongside AKA members, such as a walk for sickle cell anemia.

“I think that speaks to the importance of showing, not only just telling them, these are the things you should be doing,” she said.

Having benefited from mentoring programs themselves, the women agreed on the importance of mentors and youth programming. Murphy said mentoring can be a “make or break” factor in many people’s lives. For Murphy, mentoring and similar programs exposed her to culture, public speaking and appropriate social interactions.

“It’s about commitment and consistency,” Murphy said. “As long as we show up, and they show up, then I think the return on that investment is going to be invaluable.”

“When you talk about mentoring in general, you have to be committed,” she said. “Your mentees count on you and they look to you to provide that feedback, to provide that input, to provide that impact on their lives overall.”

Jackson echoed Murphy’s sentiments and said it’s particularly important that the women are “role models” and teach “the importance of giving back to your community.”

“It’s especially important for our young people to know who we are and that there are people who are interested in giving back,” Jackson said.

From Voter Registration To Mary Kay, MLK’s Dream Lives On

New Haven Independent, by Paul Bass

Medical student Kumba Hinds celebrated the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s birthday by guiding middle-schoolers onto the path she forged.

Hinds was one of dozens of adults showed up to one of Monday’s main New Haven’s events in honor of the slain civil rights leader: a day-long “Drum Mayor for Justice” celebration at Wexler-Grant Community School.

Some, like Hinds, came to run workshops advising young people on staying out of prison, getting to college, relaxing, eating right, managing money. Others came to sell beauty or art products at a fair in the cafeteria. All said they were there in the spirit of King.
Dixwell Alder Jeanette Morrison brought voter-registration cards and lessons about participating in government for her “Politics 101” workshop. This is her third year running the MLK Day workshop. “The big thing with Dr. King, he understood how politics, understanding government, is going to be the piece that makes us free as black people. Not just blacks, all people. I want my community to understand the politics of New Haven so they can participate in this process,” said Morrison, who noted that King belonged to Alpha Phi Alpha, one of the “divine nine” black fraternities and sororities. She belongs to Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Emmanuel Nwachuka joined Hinds in leading a worship on “navigating the education system from high school to graduate school.” “The more youth that we inspire to seek higher education, it’s going to create awareness. It’s going to help make the world a better place. I think that was Dr. King’s dreamundefinedto leave the world a better place” in part through higher education, Nwachuka said. Added Hinds: “We want to get them early so they can start thinking about different professions they might want to pursue and provide them some concrete steps on getting there.”

A similar dream inspired Derick Sampson to don a cheetah-style backpack and stand next to a man in a cheetah costume in the Wexler cafeteria fair. They worked a table for a not-for-profit called My Dream Cheetah. (CHEETAH is an acronym “Connect to Higher Education Electronic Tools Application and Help.”) Sampson’s mother, Paulette Lawrence, created the not-for-profit to start kids thinking about college at a young age. She designed a Cheetah wind-up toy, wrote songs, created books. “Dr King had a dream at one point. That’s everyone’s favorite quote. My mom had a dream. When I was in high school, sophomore year, she started this,” Sampson said. (His mom wasn’t present at the booth Monday.) “She felt that a lot of my friends weren’t interested in going to school. What she wants to do is get that mindset in young kids, you don’t necessarily need to work a 9-to-5 labor job, if you apply yourself at an early age.”

Personal shopper Alfreda Warner of New Haven credited King in part for her decision to launch V’s Accessories (“True girlfriends are like great pieces of jewelryundefinedbright, beautiful and always in style!”), wares of which she displayed Monday. “He’s helped us to move on,” she said of King. “He said that he believes in the dream; that dream has inspired me to pursue this dream of accessories.”

Two women working the Mary Kay Cosmetics booth had a King spin, too. Shirley Ellis-West, who runs the street outreach program at the New Haven Family Alliance, has begun developing a side cosmetics business with the help of veteran Mary Kay “Independent Beauty Consultant” Dani Nixon. “Mary Kay is about beautifying yourself, keeping yourself healthy, your skin healthy particularly [for] women of color,” Ellis-West said as she sat with Nixon Monday. “It has evolved into some wonderful products for women of color. Dr. King talked years ago of blacks and whites coming together. This is one example of that.”

Martin Luther King conference in New Haven focuses on education, service

New Haven Register, by Abbe Smith, Register Staff

NEW HAVEN -- Hundreds of people gathered at Wexler-Grant School Monday to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and to engage in community building through education and service.

More than 200 volunteers came out for the annual Martin Luther King conference, a decades-old tribute event that features music, free food, civil rights reflections, raffles and workshops for students, families and community members. The event was organized by local graduate chapters of the Alpha Kappa sorority and Omega Psi Phi fraternity, with help from the school district and numerous nonprofits, and donations from businesses.

"It's important to maintain tradition and history and, more importantly, to celebrate this day by giving back to the community," said Sondi Jackson, one of the lead organizers of the conference and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

She said the purpose of the workshops is to "uplift the community" and inspire people to think about the world around them.

United Way of Greater New Haven helped recruit volunteers for the event, which featured remarks from state Comptroller Kevin Lembo, Wexler-Grant Principal Sabrina Breland and Ward 22 Alderwoman Jeanette Morrison. The Rev. Brian Bellamy of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church gave the keynote address.

The workshops cater to different age groups. Programs for kindergarten through second grade students included storytelling about the Civil Rights Movement, fire safety, African dance and drumming. Kids in third through fifth grades got to try beading, dramatic arts and line dancing. Middle schoolers learned about bullying, self-esteem and planning for the future. High school students joined health discussions, learned about Internet safety and heard about the New Haven Promise college scholarship program.

Adult offerings included workshops on education topics such as the life of Rosa Parks, but also featured practical discussions about starting a business, navigating break-ups or divorce, estate and funeral planning, mental health treatments and weight loss.

In a workshop for young children about King's legacy, Al Lucas, director of the city's Office of Legislative Services, urged kids to remember the civil rights leader's life and dream of a better world, rather than focusing on his assassination. He told students about King's dedication to Gandhi's principles of nonviolence and his use of civil disobedience to fight racism and effect change. And Lucas reminded students that King was once a kid just like them.

"What do you want to be when you grow up," he asked the kids. Hands shot up and students vowed to be presidents, teachers, toy makers and principals.

In another room, youth mentor Timothy Brown engaged middle schoolers in discussion about King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. He asked students if they think King's "dream" for justice and equality has been realized. Jasmine Brown, a student at Elm City College Preparatory School and one of 200 volunteers at the conference, answered "no."

"That is not what's going on right now," she said, adding she believes society is moving closer to King's vision of equality.

While some of the workshops focused on King, others addressed practical issues and served to solve problems facing youth and adults. High school students learned about budgeting basics from presenter Terrence Jennings. Merieta Bayati, owner of the Girlie Girl Shop in New Haven, talked to a group of women about starting their own business and being successful even in a bad economy.

"It's all about how you carry yourself. You have to believe in yourself," she said.

Black women share pride in Harp’s election as New Haven mayor

By Shahid Abdul-Karim, New Haven Register

NEW HAVEN >> Vera Esdaile, Nicole Murphy and Doris Dumas said they believe mayor-elect Toni Harp’s victory was a momentous one for woman in the city.

And they are proud that she is black.

“I believe for all women it was awesome to have elected the first female mayor of this city and she is African American,” said Vera Esdaile, 48, a state social worker.

“I felt proud in that moment and proud to be a part of her historic campaign,” she said.

Harp, 66, a state senator, beat Alderman Justin Elicker, 38, last Tuesday in a tough race to fill the seat Mayor John DeStefano Jr. held for 20 years.

Harp won 54.6 percent of the vote to Elicker’s 45.3 percent.

“I felt a sense of pride and I said to her that night while hugging her, ‘you make us all proud,’” said Doris Dumas, 49, a New Haven native and James Hillhouse High School graduate.

“It’s a shame in this day and age we’re still having to see ‘the first of,’ the glass ceiling has been broken and it’s time to get to work.” Dumas said.

Harp is the city’s 50th mayor and is among 138 black women leading city’s in the country, according to Vanessa Williams, CEO/executive director of the National Conference of Black Mayors.

“I’m excited to see someone who looks like me in this leadership role, but more importantly, it’s about the future and how it’s the beginning of a new era for New Haven,” said Nicole Murphy, 37, also a New Haven native.

“This is an opportunity for all of us to rally together and be supportive of her vision to make this city great,” said Murphy, president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Theta Epsilon Omega chapter.

The image of black women

In some well-known instances in the entertainment industry, black women have been stereotyped, and according to a recent feature in Essence Magazine about a study of black women being portrayed in the media found many negative results, including black women labeled as baby mamas, black Barbie, gold-digger, unhealthy and fat.

But all three women said Harp’s election will help change the image of black women and bring some dignity to the community.

“I think she has a vested interest in black New Haven, she’s not removed from the needs of the community,” said Murphy, also Hillhouse High School graduate. “The image will change, but we have to have patience. I feel like her leadership is sincere and we (blacks) don’t hesitate to reach out to her, because whenever she see’s an opportunity to better the New Haven community she does it.”

Dumas said Harp understands the issues of jobs, economic development and education as it relates to the black community’s interest.

“It’s not going to happen overnight and it’s not magic, I think her vision and leadership will help change the image for us and the city,” Dumas said.

“I hope we (blacks) understand she’s New Haven’s mayor and when she starts doing things, she has to embrace the broader community; not just us,” she said.

Harp, who has been a state senator for the past 21 years, is noted as a consensus builder and received endorsements from the local, state and national democratic political machines.

“I’m humbled by it and had no idea people felt that way,” Harp said when told woman the city are inspired by her win. “When I see little girls they get all excited and it makes me feel really good.”

“I’m glad that finally in our lifetime that African American women can become mayors of cities,” Harp said.

She inherits budget and violence issues, but also a downtown that’s thriving and a public school system that has become a model for national reform.

Throughout the campaign, black voters stressed the need for more jobs, additional resources for youth programs and the need to address the alarming inequalities of wealth distribution facing New Haven.

Yet, Esdaile said she is a realist and that issues in the black community have to be fixed by the black community.

“It’s unrealistic for everyone to think since we have a black mayor now that all of our issues in the black community are going to be fixed overnight,” Esdaile said.

“It’s going to take the village to fix the image of the black community and it’s not going to happen just because we have a black mayor,” she said. “We can’t expect her to work magic for us, we have to do our part with our children making sure we’re on top of what they’re doing,”

Harp has been criticized by her rivals and some in the black community of her closeness with New Haven’s mostly white unions, arguing the unions will get undue benefits in exchange for their support of her campaign.

But Esdaile said people say negative things about Harp, yet aren’t involved themselves.

“Don’t just stand on the sideline and complain, get involved with the community and things that can make a difference,” she said.

Murphy said people in New Haven have a very strong sense of pride for their city, Harp is familiar to everyone and “she has the respect of a diverse pool of people in the city,” she said.

Gun violence in the community

The city’s gun violence has led to 17 homicides to date this year and drew national attention as federal authorities offering assistance this year in Newhallville, after gun fire erupted in their every day for a week.

During the campaign Harp said she was traumatized by what she found in Newhallville, where residents were afraid to leave their homes and felt menaced by youths involved in drug dealing and shootings.

Blacks represent 35.4 percent of the city’s population.

The majority of the homicide victims and known suspects in this year’s homicides are young black men.

Esdaile said the ‘it takes the village’ concept is far removed from the community.

“It’s about empowering parents. Some parents aren’t empowered, that’s one reason why we see so much violence in our community,”she said. “We have so many different resources and programs in our community for parents, but they have to involve kids in the positive things that work.” she said. “The churches could be doing more for the kids in the commuinity as well.”

Murphy said ending violence in the community is a dirty job and some people are afraid to get out into the community.

“We need to talk to those people that are out there in the community and find ways of how we can help,” Murphy said.

“Finding out what’s lacking that causes our youth to have a blatant disrespect for human life is key; it’s like a game for many of them until it’s to late,” she said.

Dumas said she is tired of seeing life lost by homicide or the prison system, as “no one wins’ she said.

Harp said she wants to get the Q House board of directors up and running again with programs offered in schools and other space within a few months. She expects to ask churches and Yale-New Haven Hospital to help with the funding.

We are honored and proud to share that one of our Women’s Initiative’s signature projects, the New Haven Food Truck, has been recognized by [Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter] with its Global Poverty Leadership Award.

The food truck, which recently completed its second summer on the road, delivers free meals to New Haven youths under age 18 during the summer, when those who rely on free meals during the school year are at risk of going hungry.

This past summer the Food Truck, which runs in partnership with New Haven Public Schools, expanded to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. It made stops at a total of 10 sites, serving two meals each day at every stop. One driver we spoke to in August said on a typical day he distributed about 70 breakfasts and between 180 and 190 lunches. The high demand for the Food Truck’s services shows that the need for it is great, and growing.

Our Women’s Initiative members - passionate about childhood health, nutrition and hunger – were a driving force behind getting the Truck on city streets and have supported the initiative as it has grown.

In presenting the Global Poverty Leadership Award to United Way for the food truck program, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority cited United Way “for sending a very strong message that every child deserves love, support, encouragement and a healthy meal.”

Every four years, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s international president adopts a program that guides all of the sorority’s chapter efforts during the course of her term. The current president, Carolyn House-Stewart, is focusing the group’s 2010-2014 program on “Global Leadership Through Timeless Service.”

New Haven NAACP branch encouraging residents to 'Get Out to Vote'

New Haven Register: Published Sunday, November 4, 2012

NEW HAVEN - In anticipation of Election Day on Tuesday the Greater New Haven NAACP Branch is encouraging city residents to “Get Out To Vote.”

The organization will be staffing a phone bank to make calls starting from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the branch headquarters, located at 545 Whalley Ave.

Neighborhood canvassing also will start from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

“We are excited about Tuesday’s election and we are preparing to canvas our communities to let people know that voting affects every aspect of our human life,” said Doris Dumas, first vice president of the local branch and leading the GOTV campaign.

With assistance from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority [Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter], more than 525 new voters were registered in New Haven since January.

Phone banking also will take place at the branch headquarters from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day Tuesday, and rides will be offered to those need getting to the polls.

Sunday’s canvas will target the Newhallville, Dixwell, Dwight and Fair Haven communities.

“We are in need of more volunteers for the canvas, and as we get more volunteers we can expand our areas coverage and encourage more people to vote on Tuesday’s election,” Dumas said.

Dumas also said the branch has solidified six volunteers as carpoolers to the polls and other volunteers are on standby if the number of people needing rides increase.

With regard to concern about voter suppression concerns that have arisen in the country, Dumas said, “We have not seen or heard of any voter suppression in our areas, however we encourage people to contact the 1-866-OUR-VOTE number for any voting irregularities,”

“People need to know when they go to the polls to remove candidate buttons, hats and cover up T-shirts, because you could be turned away,” she said. “We don’t want anything to stop us on Tuesday, our ancestors have fought and struggled for this basic right and when we don’t exercise this right we disrespect the dignity of our voice.”

Display of such political material within 75 feet of a polling place is not permitted under state law.

New Haven coalition launches series to register new voters

By Shahid Abdul-Karim, Register Staff

NEW HAVEN - The Elm City Communities/Housing Authority of New Haven has launched a series of non-partisan voter registration drives that will run until Oct. 30.

“Your Vote Matters” is the title of the series and it will take place throughout the Housing Authority’s family developments in the city.

“Elm City Communities is excited to launch the ‘Your Vote Matter’ series of voter registration drives for our residents,” said Housing Authority Executive Director Karen Dubois-Walton. “Along with our community partners we will be on the ground registering as many people as we can and letting them know that their vote is equally important in both a local and national scale.”

Registration times for the events will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at these locations: Thursday, Quinnipiac Terrace; Oct. 11, Farnam Courts; Oct. 18, McConaughy Terrace; Oct. 25, Westville Manor; and Oct. 30 at Eastview Terrace.

Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield, D-New Haven, said regarding the voting process that, “most folk only vote in presidential elections, not understanding or seeing the importance of voting in other local elections that affect their quality of life and the communities in which they live.”

The series of events was created to educate and engage residents about the importance of the voting process. During each voter registration session a group of volunteers will canvas designated sites to register residents and speak one-on-one to answer questions and hand out educational materials about the election process.

“All local organizations have been charged by their national offices to participate in voter registration. This has been our obligation and commitment to the community,” said Dori Dumas, vice president of the Greater New Haven NAACP branch [and member of Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter].

Elm City Communities partnered with the NAACP, Delta Sigma Theta sorority, New Haven Family Alliance, The People’s Center, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority [Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter], Junta for Progressive Action, Fire Birds of New Haven and Omega Psi Phi fraternity for the events.

Speak Out Against Hunger

September is Hunger Action Month - Speak Out Against Hunger!

Nationwide, one in six Americans - including more than one in five children - struggle with hunger.

Theta Epsilon Omega's Global Poverty Committee responded to these alarming facts by mobilizing members of the chapter and the community to wear the color orange on September 6, 2012 to speak out against hunger. (click image to the left to view pictures)

Why?

Because the nearly 49 million people in America who struggle with hunger often do so in silence. They live in our communities; they are our neighbors, our co-workers, and our friends, yet their struggles with providing food for themselves and their families often go unheard. By simply lending our voices, we expected to make a tangible contribution by mobilizing our community to do something - no matter how big or small - to end hunger.

To that end, the chapter's effort to end hunger does not stop at just wearing orange for a day.

Theta Epsilon Omega continues to advocate for the fight against hunger by partnering with organizations such as the Connecticut Food Bank. In the Spring of 2012, the chapter participated in the Connecticut Food Bank's Walk Against Hunger and donated $1,060.00.

The chapter's reach extends globally by supporting Heifer International, a world hunger organization that donates livestock to poor countries. Throughout the year, both chapter members and its Emerging Young Leaders participate in fun and unique fundraising activities to benefit Heifer International.

Other hunger-focused community programs that the chapter is currently involved in include: volunteering at the Community Soup Kitchen; organizing a food drive to benefit FISH New Haven; and adopting families to receive gift cards to Elm City Market, a local grocery store that stocks healthy foods, including many sustainable and organic food options.

Theta Epsilon Omega wants you to continue to adovocate for those who struggle to keep food on the table by educating yourself, your friends and family about the problem of hunger in our communities. For more information on how you can help, please e-mail programs@akanewhaven.org.

Martin Luther King conference in New Haven focuses on education, service

Martin Luther King conference in New Haven focuses on education, service

Monday, January 16, 2012

By Abbe Smith, Register Staff
asmith@nhregister.com / Twitter: @abbegsmith

NEW HAVEN - Hundreds of people gathered at Wexler-Grant School Monday to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and to engage in community building through education and service.

More than 200 volunteers came out for the annual Martin Luther King conference, a decades-old tribute event that features music, free food, civil rights reflections, raffles and workshops for students, families and community members. The event was organized by [Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.] and Omega Psi Phi fraternity, with help from the school district and numerous nonprofits, and donations from businesses.

“It’s important to maintain tradition and history and, more importantly, to celebrate this day by giving back to the community,” said Sondi Jackson, one of the lead organizers of the conference and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

She said the purpose of the workshops is to “uplift the community” and inspire people to think about the world around them.

In a workshop for young children about King’s legacy, Al Lucas, director of the city’s Office of Legislative Services, urged kids to remember the civil rights leader’s life and dream of a better world, rather than focusing on his assassination. He told students about King’s dedication to Gandhi’s principles of nonviolence and his use of civil disobedience to fight racism and effect change. And Lucas reminded students that King was once a kid just like them.

“What do you want to be when you grow up,” he asked the kids. Hands shot up and students vowed to be presidents, teachers, toy makers and principals.

In another room, youth mentor Timothy Brown engaged middle schoolers in discussion about King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He asked students if they think King’s “dream” for justice and equality has been realized. Jasmine Brown, a student at Elm City College Preparatory School and one of 200 volunteers at the conference, answered “no.”

“That is not what’s going on right now,” she said, adding she believes society is moving closer to King’s vision of equality.

“It’s all about how you carry yourself. You have to believe in yourself,” she said.
A Community Discussion on the Death Penalty

Did you know that since 2000, over 200 people on death row have been exonerated due to new evidence confirming their innocence?

In the wake of Troy Davis, who was recently executed by the State of Georgia despite strong questions about his innocence, people nationwide are engaged in heated public debate on the inequities and failures of the death penalty. Even in Connecticut, where in just three months the state legislature will vote on whether to abolish the death penalty, there are many citizens voicing their concerns and hoping their state senators will take them into account.

On November 22, 2011, Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter was the lead sponsor of A Community Discussion on the Death Penalty at Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hamden, Connecticut. The chapter joined with other organizations and concerned citizens to discuss the impact of the death penalty on our communities. The event represented an important effort for Theta Epsilon Omega to take the lead in promoting greater community engagement with important challenges we face.

The panel discussion included Kimberly Davis, sister of Troy Davis; Lumumba Akinwole-Bandele, Senior Community Engagement Advocate with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund; Victoria Coward whose son was murdered in New Haven in 2007; and Representative Gary Holder-Winfield (D-New Haven). The event was moderated by Superior Court Judge John Turner.

Other sponsors of the event were The Connecticut State Conference of NAACP Branches; The Greater New Haven Branch of the NAACP; WYBC 94.3 FM Radio; the ACLU of Connecticut; and the Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty.

Special thanks to Dr. Khalilah L. Brown-Dean, Theta Epsilon Omega's First Vice President, for spearheading the panel discussion, and to the chapter's Social Justice and Human Rights Committee for coordinating the volunteers.

Dr. Elizabeth Alexander Inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority

Dr. Elizabeth Alexander Inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
Alexander Hailed as an Internationally-Acclaimed Poet, Essayist and Playwright

Chicago, Illinois - August 16, 2011 - Dr. Elizabeth Alexander, an award winning poet, essayist, playwright and a Pulitzer Prize finalist was recently inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority as an Honorary Member. Alexander, who serves as chairman of the African American Studies Department at Yale University, was initiated in a members-only ceremony held in New Haven, Connecticut.

Presiding over the formal induction was Alpha Kappa Alpha's International President Attorney Carolyn House Stewart. Participating were the Honorable Peggy A. Quince, the International Chairman of the Honorary Members/Awards Committee, and Executive Director Deborah Dangerfield. Also joining in the induction were former International President, Barbara A. McKinzie, former International Chairman of the Honorary Members/Awards Committee, Mae R. Carr, and Elicia Spearman, president of Theta Epsilon Omega of New Haven, Connecticut, which nominated Alexander.

An honorary membership is the highest honor the Sorority presents and those who are inducted represent the highest standards of character, courage and womanhood. Through her creativity, and as expressed in her poems, plays and essays, she embodies the Alpha Kappa Alpha ideal, which is captured in its credo: “Providing service to all mankind.” This is Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's core mission, the foundation upon which the Sorority was founded in 1908.

Professor Alexander has earned worldwide acclaim for her contributions, which make her an ideal candidate for membership.

Creative triumphs, awards and recognitions have punctuated her journey to greatness. Most recently, she composed and delivered “Praise Song for the Day” for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. The poem was recently published as a small book from Graywolf Press. In addition, she has published five books of poems: The Venus Hottentot (1990), Body of Life (1996), Antebellum Dream Book (2001), American Sublime (2005), which was one of three finalists for the Pulitzer Prize and was one of the American Library Association's “Notable Books of the Year;” and her first young adult collection (co-authored with Marilyn Nelson), Miss Crandall's School for Young Ladies and Little Misses of Color (2008 Connecticut Book Award). Her two collections of essays are The Black Interior (2004) and Power and Possibility (2007), and her play, “Diva Studies,” was produced at the Yale School of Drama.

Professor Alexander is the first recipient of the Alphonse Fletcher, Sr. Fellowship for work that “contributes to improving race relations in American society and furthers the broad social goals of the U.S. Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954.” She is the 2007 winner of the first Jackson Prize for Poetry, awarded by Poets & Writers, Inc. Other awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, two Pushcart Prizes, the George Kent Award, given by Gwendolyn Brooks, a Guggenheim fellowship as well as the Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at University of Chicago.

Alexander has degrees from Yale University and Boston University and completed her Ph.D. in English at the University of Pennsylvania.

“We are honored and proud to have Dr. Alexander join our great sisterhood,” said Stewart. “Her devotion to education and her commitment to delivering human rights messages through her poems, essays and plays embody the qualities of the Alpha Kappa Alpha woman. She will make a great addition to our Sorority and we look forward to supporting and embracing her.”

After the formal induction, Alexander expressed pride in joining the Sorority. She said she was particularly uplifted because poet Sonia Sanchez - whose work and character she admires -- is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Photo Caption: Dr. Elizabeth Alexander (wearing glasses) beams with pride after being inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority as an honorary member. Joining in the congratulations are (from left): Camille Cooper, vice president of Theta Epsilon Omega of New Haven; Alpha Kappa Alpha's international president Carolyn House Stewart and Elicia Spearman, chapter president - Theta Epsilon Omega.

Yale School of Medicine honors its first African-American women graduates

On June 2, 2011, the Yale School of Medicine will honor its first African-American female graduates. Two of the women being honored, Dr. Francis-McBarnette and Dr. Wethers, were members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Theta Epsilon Omega is a co-sponsor of the event.

For more information about the event and the contributions of the honorees, please read the article published by the Yale Office of Public Affairs and Communications.

School of Medicine honors its first African-American women graduates

Published: May 27, 2011

New Haven, Conn. undefined As part of its bicentennial celebration, Yale School of Medicine will host a special program to honor its first three African-American women graduates on June 2.

The event will take place 5-7 p.m. at the Harvey Cushing/Hay Historical Library, 333 Cedar St. The honorees are Beatrix Ann (McCleary) Hamburg, M.D.'48, Yvette Fay Francis-McBarnette, M.D. '50 and Doris Louise Wethers, M.D. '52. The event is free and open to the public and begins with a reception 5- 5:30 p.m.

The celebration will also honor two others who established firsts as African-American faculty at the medical school, Dr. Claudewell Sydney Thomas, the first appointed African-American full-time faculty member in 1965 and Dr. James Pierpont Comer, the first African-American faculty member to attain tenure status and full professor rank.

"We are delighted to celebrate the accomplishments of these extraordinary African Americans who courageously broke the racial barrier at Yale School of Medicine," said Yale School of Medicine Dean Dr. Robert Alpern, "All subsequent students, both minority and non-minority, owe them a debt of gratitude."

Hamburg's achievement in 1948 as Yale's first African-American woman to graduate with a medical degree was not the first path breaking challenge of her career. She was the first self-identified African American to graduate from Vassar College, the last of the historic "Seven Sister" colleges to integrate. Coming to Yale to "seek the best medical education," she left to embark on a career in child psychiatry that led her to the highest ranks of academic medicine as a clinician, innovative researcher and educator. She has held professorships at Stanford, Harvard and Mt. Sinai Schools of Medicine and received numerous distinctions and honorary awards. She is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine and fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Her academic career continues today as the DeWitt Wallace Distinguished Scholar in the Department of Psychiatry at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Her daughter, Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg, is the current U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissioner.

Hamburg's graduation in 1948 ended a long era of restrictive racial and gender-based admissions practices at Yale School of Medicine. Yale had previously trained African-American men in medicine. In 1857, Dr. Cortlandt Van Rensselaer Creed became the first African-American medical graduate of Yale. Twelve other men followed over the next four decades. These signs of racial progress at Yale ended abruptly at the beginning of the 20th century. In step with social norms and legal strictures that enforced segregation in the society, Yale School of Medicine quietly closed its doors to African Americans for nearly one-half century, leaving no record of African-American graduates undefined male or female undefined between 1903 and 1947.

Hamburg had an immediate impact on admissions at the medical school. The next two African-American graduates were also women, Dr. Yvette Fay Francis-McBarnette in 1950 and Dr. Doris Louise Wethers in 1952. Other African Americans continued to graduate through the 1950's and 1960's but significant numbers were not achieved until after 1970. There are now more than 400 African-American men and women graduates of the medical school.

"Dr. Hamburg prevailed against extremely rigid racial, gender and institutional barriers that once closed doors of opportunity to women and African Americans in medicine," said Dr. Forrester A. "Woody" Lee, professor of medicine and associate dean of multicultural affairs at Yale School of Medicine. "We are truly honored to celebrate with her and her family the legacy she has created at Yale."

Francis-McBarnette left Yale in 1950 to train in pediatrics at Michael Reese Hospital before returning to Queens, New York, and establishing one of the first comprehensive sickle cell treatment clinics. Wethers, a 1952 graduate, trained in pediatrics in Washington, D.C. and Brooklyn, New York. She became the first African American appointed to head a New York City voluntary hospital department. She also followed a career in sickle disease and headed a comprehensive sickle cell treatment clinical and research center at St. Luke's Hospital in New York. She was a member of the teaching and research faculty at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and published more than 30 scholarly articles on sickle cell disease. Wethers and Francis-McBarnette often worked in partnership to raise research funding and establish clinical care guidelines for sickle cell disease. They were both nationally recognized experts in the disease and helped guide local and national policies for sickle cell screening and treatment.

The three women honorees share much in common. They were each raised in Harlem and attended New York public elementary and secondary schools. Francis-McBarnette and Wethers graduated from New York City public universities, Hunter and Queens Colleges. Each woman entered hospital internship training programs as African American firsts. Their career paths converged on a focus of care for children, especially those underserved and challenged by difficult medical conditions, mental health and sickle cell disease. They each led professional careers combining clinical care, research, teaching and advocacy.

The other honorees, Comer and Thomas, joined Yale the faculty since 1968 and 1965, respectively. Comer is the Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center, and Thomas is professor emeritus of child psychiatry at the University of California-Los Angeles.

The event sponsors are the Yale School of Medicine Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Yale Alumni Association, the Yale Minority Organization for Retention and Equity, the Yale African American Affinity Group, the Yale Office for Diversity and Inclusion, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Celebrates 103 Years

International President, Carolyn House Stewart welcomed members to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. National Founders' Day celebration in Little Rock, Arkansas. In honor of 103 years of Global Leadership through Timeless Service, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members, including Elicia Pegues Spearman, President of Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter, held true to its founding values by spanning the city in numerous acts of Service to All Mankind.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 15, 1908. The National Founders' Day celebration ran from January 13-16, 2011.

Here's just a snippet of the difference made in Little Rock, Arkansas by members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.:

As part of the "Pink and Green in Action" service projects, over 60 members winterized the homes of six elderly citizens.

Members played BINGO with residents of a Little Rock public housing development while providing door prizes and refreshments.

Members sorted and packaged donations of hats, scarves, books, toiletries, and shoes to be shipped to area schools, shelters and service organizations.

Members redecorated rooms at a domestic violence safe haven for women and children.

Members gathered at a Little Rock high school to speak with students about how Martin Luther King, Jr. impacted their lives.

Members assembled toiletry kits for local residents in need.

To promote financial literacy and to encourage the development of young leaders, members made a large donation of books to a local magnet school during the Founders' Day celebration.

Members engaged and played with children ages two to five years old at an in-residence substance abuse treatment center for women and children.

Members prepared food baskets for and served hot lunch to more than 150 people who are homeless or simply in need of a helping hand.

Read the full stories of the various service projects here.
