The Hit List – Be present with tarot

The past year has been a grinder. I’m still coming down from it. A few situations seem to be on their way to completion. Even so, the residue lingers. I sometimes want to crawl up into a little ball and hide away from the world. It’s like that sometimes.

One of the things I’ve learned is that it’s best to be present, no matter what. Checking out may seem like an option, but it rarely works for long. Eventually, whatever you’re trying to escape comes back around, nipping at your heels until you give it the attention it needs.

Tarot has always been my go-to tool when life throws me a million monkey wrenches (my least favorite tool is those wrenches). It has allowed me to see what may lie ahead and serves as a lantern for seeing what’s going on inside.

I’m guilty of ignoring my needs until my body gets my attention. That’s an old pattern I’ve attempted to break. Over the years, I have used the Body, Mind, Spirit spread to help me change that tendency. I’m not the creator of that layout, nor do I know who to credit. But I do know it’s the perfect way to check in and be present.

I featured this spread in my book, The Cards You’re Dealt – How To Deal When Life Gets Real: A Tarot Guidebook, because I’ve found it to be effective for reflection when you are faced with the hard stuff: loss, grief, illness, and so forth.

Last year brought many of these themes to my doorstep, and while I wanted to check out with a giant jug of wine, tarot pulled me back into the present. This is the spread I used again and again.

Here’s how you do it:

Shuffle your cards. When you’re ready, put the deck face down and cut it into three piles. Then, put the deck back together any way you like. You can choose three cards from the top of the deck or you can fan the cards out and pull three intuitively. The positions are simply body, mind, and spirit.

The cards can show you where you’re doing just fine – or need more support. Here’s a recent reading I did for myself.

Body: Knight of Wands reversed – Too many activities, not enough of the right physical activity. This is true. I was slacking on my exercise routines. Time to get back on the Peloton saddle!

Mind: Eight of Swords – This card can mean a self-imposed prison but also feeling powerless. I’ve had a lot of anxiety around a situation. It’s kept me up at night. In fact, it’s been hard to get my mind on different things. However, the Eight of Swords is a reminder that I’m not actually stuck. There is a way out once I stop struggling. The other side of this card is isolation. I prefer to “suffer in silence,” which is probably not helping.

Spirit: Four of Pentacles – I’m rock solid in this department. I’ve been doing grounding and shielding work, so this makes sense.

This reading helped me to see my body and mind needed attention. While I’d like to believe I’m good at self-care, the cards point to a different truth.

The Hit List – As the snow blows

Outside the window, I can see fat flakes of snow coming down, covering the ground like a fluffy ermine coat. Cars slip around as plows move past them in an urgent effort to keep up with the accumulation. Winter is here in all its messy, beautiful glory.

So much of the world comes to a standstill when the weather gods decide to play slip ’n freeze. While my state is accustomed to this yearly snow dump, others are ill-prepared. But I am not focusing on those poor suckers. Instead, I’m basking in the snow glow, content to be inside.

My sister says I am the only person she knows who likes winter. She might be right.

This time of year is quiet, especially now that the holidays are moving into the rearview mirror. It’s my opportunity to hibernate (although, frankly, I’m perpetually in hibernation mode these days). I can write, read, and bake. It’s less likely I’ll have company or be invited to anything. My introvert heart is content. As the younger set says: it’s JOMO. The joy of missing out. (I’ve also seen FOBO tossed around…the fear of being invited. Maybe that’s more accurate in my case.)

Soon, the snow will cease, and my new shoveling guy will be carving a winding path around the house. Salt will be tossed, and the melting will commence. Nothing lasts, not the snow, not the salt, nor winter. Even so, I’ll hang on to this time of year as long as I can.

The raging outside will end, but I hope my hibernation can continue well past the winter months.

What if you don’t like your tarot client?

I get lots of questions about tarot. Typical questions are “What deck should I get?” or “How can I find the right reader?” But recently, someone asked me, “What do you do if you don’t like your tarot client?” That’s an interesting query, so I thought I’d answer that here.

The short answer: it depends.

Sometimes, the person at your table has an obnoxious personality. For example, maybe they’re loud, or their laugh rubs you the wrong way. You might be tempted to pull out a deck with nothing but Tower cards, but that’s not the right approach. As long as they’re harmless, you should ignore it and get to work. After all, when dealing with the public, you’re bound to come across folks who are weird or annoying. It’s par for the course and no big deal.

However, there are times when a client might cross a line. An off-color joke or rude comment doesn’t need to be tolerated. If this happens, you have two options: you can set a boundary immediately or refuse to read for them. Generally, I choose the former. A simple “I don’t like that joke/comment and if you continue speaking to me like that, I will end the reading” lets the querent know you won’t put up with that behavior.

You might also come across someone with different beliefs, which can feel uncomfortable, especially if they are vocal about it. I’ve read for many people who do not share my political or spiritual philosophies over the years. All of that goes by the wayside when they’re at the tarot table. I’m there to do a job – not argue about who is right. It’s only rare occasions when someone gets pushy (usually after an election). In those cases, it’s best to let the person know you disagree and move on to the reading. Suppose their beliefs are genuinely objectionable, and you cannot get past that. In that case, it’s better to refer them to someone else. (For the record, I’ve had to nix a few people for this very reason.)

Creeps should never be tolerated, period. Sexual innuendos or unwanted physical contact are a hard no. Fire them immediately. (This is one of the reasons why phone readings are better than in-person. It minimizes the risk of this sort of scenario.)

I’ve also found that when there is a personality mismatch, the client will feel it, too. They’ll usually go off to find a reader who is a better fit. That’s my favorite solution.

Ultimately, you need to determine what feels right for you. You deserve to feel comfortable and treated with respect. This will be different for every reader. Some don’t mind dirty jokes, while others might. Again: it depends.

While you cannot always control who comes through your door, you have a say over who you serve. The customer is not always right….for you.

This is where you need to go. After all, the Mountain Goat isn’t content to rest on the safe grass. Instead, they’re willing to scale the treacherous mountain terrain because they know the view is better at the top. Bold ambition is IN at this time. What you believe, you can achieve. An auspicious angle with Uranus occurs shortly before the New Moon saunters in. This provides the right amount of rebellion to push past obstacles, objections, and conformists. You can break the rules as you see fit. In fact, it’s better that way. Trails are rarely blazed by playing by the rulebook. A few hours after the New Moon in Capricorn, Venus trines Chiron, which soothes fears. It also delivers a jolt of creativity and healing, the perfect combo for manifestation. Nothing can stop you.

Capricorn is associated with ambition, structure, hard work, organization, recognition, and success. Take time to jot down intentions around these themes. The Universe is on your side and ready to work with you to achieve what seems impossible. In other words, today is LIT for those who are ready to blaze trails and succeed wildly. The Hit List – Some things never seem to go away…until they do.

It’s a new year. Resolutions, fresh goals, and a positive outlook…yeah, that is my usual mode. However, I found myself feeling prickly this time around. Last year was hard, so perhaps that is the culprit.

Or maybe it’s something else.

Instead of focusing on all the new things on the horizon, I spent days brooding over all the things that never seem to go away.

Such as:

:: Imposter syndrome cropping up out of nowhere, making me feel like running for cover.
:: The relentless craving for sugar.
:: Old family grudges being rekindled by someone who refuses to drop the subject.
:: Anxiety about last year’s situation.
:: A nagging shoulder pain I thought was gone.

No matter how much therapy (physical or emotion), tarot cards thrown on the table, or hours spent journaling, these things hang on year after year, a reminder that life changes but some things are resistant. There is more work to do.

So onward I trudge into 2024, with hope and worry, happiness and sadness, relief and anger, marching side by side like mismatched animals in Noah’s Ark. I know eventually this will subside, because busyness is soon to follow, leaving little time to wallow.

This morning, as I popped a piece of chocolate in my mouth, I realized the shoulder is better. I can move it around without wincing. What did I do? Nothing. Because that’s the thing: sometimes you just need to leave well alone and let it resolve rather than trying to “fix it.”

Perhaps part of the problem is assuming I need fixing. That there is something wrong with cravings, grudges, or insecurity. Do I need a resolution every year? Or can I just let go and trust it will all work out? Maybe this is the year to let it be and see what happens.

A second Full Moon in Cancer happens on December 26th at 7:33 PM ET. Yes, you read that right. The first Full Moon in Cancer happened on January 6th. Which means this year has been bookended by an emo Cancerian vibe. Considering the Moon rules Cancer, you might say this double shot is auspicious.

Cancer is associated with home, family, and security. What changes and challenges around those themes have you experienced this year? Maybe you moved or a loved one exited the picture. Or perhaps you’ve gotten clear on what makes you secure. This Moon represents the closing of the cycle. Let go of any remaining emotional baggage so you can go into 2024 with a clean slate.

This lunation pits the tender Cancer Moon against the stoic Capricorn Sun, which could find you stuck between your heart and your head. While it’s best to listen to your feelings, remain grounded, otherwise you could be in for a wild emotional ride. However, do not attempt to stifle yourself. Allow yourself to feel. A good cry could bring a release.

Stars Crossed – How to Get Along with Sagittarius

The Stars Crossed series focuses on astrological compatibility. While it’s way more complicated than just your Sun sign, we’re starting off with the Sun because it is an important part of your astrology profile. After all, it’s your core personality.

This month, we look at Sagittarius. Keep in mind this will be general info. As we progress in this series, we’ll look at many other details so you can get the complete picture of the Sagittarius in your life (or yourself).

What to know about Sagittarius:

Element: Fire
Quality: Mutable
Symbol: The Archer
Ruling Planet: Jupiter
Key Phrase: I see.
Traits: honest, adventurous, optimistic, loves freedom

The two things to keep in mind if you want to get along with Sagittarius folks are truth and freedom. Simple? Yes and no. Sagittarius is notoriously blunt and independent, which can feel like a harsh brush-off to sensitive types. But if you learn to roll with this vibe, you’ll see that these fiery Archers make excellent companions.

Sagittarius is mutable, which means change is vital for their happiness. They hate being pinned down. You must give them room to breathe, roam, think, and explore. If you can stay busy while they’re off seeing the world, you won’t have time to worry about what they’re up to. Because they’re honest, they’ll let you know what they’re doing. See how this works?

Because of their tendency to flit around the globe, these restless souls need to wait before settling down. If they partner up too early, they might resent it later. When that happens, a good ole midlife crisis solves the problem. While some Sagittarius folks are capable of commitment, they fare better if they have life experience under their belt first. However, if they have a partner with a nomadic spirit (looking at you, Gemini), they have no trouble hanging in for the long run.

Sagittarius tends to be happy-go-lucky, which is an attractive quality. They’re fun to be around. Spend time with these optimists, and you’ll feel better in a flash. If you’re a cynic, their peppy demeanor might be annoying. Even so, it’s hard not to like Archers.

They’re a Fire sign, so they have a million passions and plenty of energy. It’s challenging to keep up with them! Physical activity makes their hearts swoon, so you’ll want to be active, too. Sports, exercise, or running multiple errands – get ready to move your body!

While Sagittarius is known for honesty, at times, their delivery can be brutal. You’ll need to have a thick skin because that truth can sting. Most of them are not good liars. When they try to fib, it shows on their faces immediately. However, I’ve met a few who were accomplished at the art of deception. While they didn’t get away with it for long, they were convincing. The reason why: they’re sincere, so you assume they’re telling the truth. That ability to convey trust means they can fool some of the people some of the time.

Romancing a Sagittarius: It’s best to be straightforward if you want to charm a Sagittarius. Don’t play games. They hate that. Instead, let them know you like them immediately. Chase them a bit. They’ll adore being pursued. Because they’re a Fire sign, they’ll want to take the lead eventually. For dates, you want to consider new experiences instead of the usual dinner and a movie. (Avoid Netflix and chill…they want to be out and about). Tickets to cool concerts, road trips to interesting destinations, long hikes, or horseback riding win their restless hearts. Conversation is important for Archers, too. If you’re up on current events and love philosophy, you’ll have plenty to chat about. They’re also outrageous flirts. If you’re the jealous type, that might get on your last nerve.

Sagittarius parents: Open communication, fun, adventure, and trust make Sagittarius wonderful parents. These free spirits allow their youngsters to be themselves. They never try to mold them into mini-mes. However, they tend to be a bit freewheeling when it comes to discipline. They want to be friends with their kids, so they’ll be a bit more easygoing than some of the other signs of the zodiac. In some cases, they can be neglectful. Their desire for freedom at all costs can lead to irresponsibility. Keep in mind these are only extreme cases. For the most part, they are playful, honest, and willing to give their children a lot of space to just be kids.

Sagittarius children: Sagittarius children have tons of energy right out of the womb. As soon as they can walk, they’re ready to run! In other words: these live wires will keep you on your toes. If you want to make them happy, regular physical activity is a must. Get outdoors, hit the playground, and let them burn off that energy! They are curious about the world, so books about philosophy and social justice will interest them. If you can travel, you’ll spark a lifelong love of exploring. Sagittarius kids demand total honesty. If they sense you’re twisting the truth, they’ll call you on it. They’re skilled debaters, so choose your battles wisely. Give them as much freedom as you can, but make sure they respect your rules, too. Compromise will be necessary if you want peace and peace of mind.

Sagittarius bosses: A Sagittarius boss wants a positive working environment for their employees, so they’ll do what they can to make that happen. Fairness, honesty, and generosity – if you work for an Archer, you’ll get a square deal. They’re natural leaders and know how to inspire people. Because they are passionate about their work, they’ll expect you to be, too. If you’re not a good team player, you won’t last long. Keep in mind they are independent, which means they’ll expect you to work without supervision. If you need a lot of direction, you might want to look for employment elsewhere.

Sagittarius employees: Sagittarius are trustworthy types, so they make excellent employees. They tend to be extroverted, which means you’ll want to avoid sticking them in the back. Instead, put them out front where they can be part of the action. Better yet: give them a travel allowance and the ability to work remotely. They’ll love that! Because many Archers hate being tied down, they choose freelance work. An independent contractor gig means they’re free to do other things once the contract comes to an end.

Sagittarius friends: If fun, truth, and adventure appeal to you, you’ll love having a Sagittarius pal. They are always up for something. A last-minute road trip, spontaneous dance party, or visit to a casino – you can count on your Sagittarius friend to drop everything and go! They’ll never lie to you. But if you ask if the pants make your butt look big, don’t expect a soft touch. At times, they can be flaky. It sucks when they blow you off for something else that seems more exciting, but soon enough, they’ll be back with lots of tales about their latest madcap adventure and tickets to a rave. It’s hard to stay mad at them.

The Hit List – 2023 is ending and I’m on a holiday break

2023 is almost over. WHEW. Just a few weeks until the glittery ball drops in Times Square. But I’ll be far from there. Instead, I’ll be hunkered down with my loved ones and all the books.

I started taking lots of time off in December about two years ago. It’s been one of the best decisions I have ever made. This time is for rest, writing, reading, tidying up loose business ends, and baking…or nothing at all. So the blog will be quieter. Same with my social media channels. I have a few things to publish, but it’s minimal all the way.

So, here’s to the end of the year, a delicious holiday break and silent nights. Sending you all my love for a wonderful wintery season.

Different Tarot Decks for Different Moons

Every two and a half days or so, the Moon moves into a different astrological sign. That’s why some days you may feel like crawling under a boulder while others might find you rarin’ to go.

I follow the Moon closely. I know on days when the Moon is Gemini, I can write like a human ticker tape. But when the Moon slides into Pisces, I just want to nap. Honoring the Moon’s cycles allows me to move and groove with the energy rather than flop about like a salmon washed up at the top of the river.

This got me thinking: what if you chose a different tarot deck for every Moon cycle? I have been playing around with this behind the scenes, and it’s been great fun. Although I am a Rider-Waite-Smith fan, some decks seemed to vibe better with different lunations. Interesting! (Plus, this experiment gave me an opportunity to dust off some tarot cards that should get more action.)

I compiled a list of newer decks to try for each Moon phase. I’ve tested these out, and they seem to fit the lunations I picked. Here are my recommendations:

Aries: Totem Tarot – The Aries Moon is for new beginnings, risks, and boldness. This is the best lunation for taking chances and blazing trails. The Totem Tarot is a true original that jump-starts your intuition with stark black-and-white imagery. When you want to see things differently, try this one.

Taurus: Weiser Tarot – Taurus Moons are your time to focus on comfort, security, and beautiful things. A classic Rider Waite Smith deck works well, but The Weiser Tarot is a fresh update with pretty watercolors and representation. A comforting deck for a chill Taurus vibe.

Gemini: The Outsider Tarot – When the Moon is in Gemini, it’s time to communicate, write, run errands, and learn. Geminis are also a bit offbeat, so a funky, colorful deck like the Outsider Tarot works well for this lunar phase. Use this deck when you need a bit of pizzazz and fun in your interpretations.

Cancer: The Knight-Waite Tarot – The Moon is happy in Cancer. Here, it can connect to home, family, history, and the things that make us feel secure. The vintage imagery on the Knight-Waite Tarot recalls time gone by. It’s also excellent for intuitive readings, which thrive under the Cancer Moon.

Leo: Grimalkin’s Curious Cats Tarot – Leo Moons are best for leisure, play, and creativity. It’s also fantastic for self-expression. The lush imagery in Grimalkin’s Curious Cats Tarot will get your creative juices flowing. Plus, cats are the perfect homage to the biggest feline of all.

Virgo: Houseplant Tarot – You’ll want to put your energy into daily routines, tasks, and well-being when the Moon sits in Virgo. This is a fussy placement for La Luna but perfect for creating order in the house. The Houseplant Tarot is simple, clean, and green – perfect for this perfectionist Moon phase.

Libra: Ephemere – Libra is all about beauty and elegance. During Libra Moons, you’ll want to focus on beautifying your surroundings and self. Fairness, balance, and justice are also themes now. The Ephemere is the eye treat you need during this refined lunation.

Scorpio: The Goddess of Love Tarot – Scorpio Moon gets a bad rap (so unfair!), but it is the spiciest, sexiest, most psychic Moon of all. Any tarot works well now. Heck, if you are plugged in, you don’t even need a deck! But if you want to honor the hotness of the Scorpio Moon, pull out the Goddess of Love Tarot. Readings are sure to be steamy AF!

Sagittarius: Wanderers Tarot – Once the Moon enters Sagittarius, it’s time to expand your horizons. Travel, study, take classes, and read all the books. In other words: give your mind time to roam and grow. The Wanderers Tarot offers a unique point of view. If you want to look at tarot with fresh eyes, this is the deck.

Capricorn: Black and White Rider Waite – Capricorn is known for structure and tradition. When the Moon is in the sign of the Goat, you can create divine order in any area of your world. This is your cue to organize and minimize. The Black and White Rider Waite is like a traditional RWS but with an elegant flair. The lack of color allows for clean, clear readings.

Aquarius: Abstract Futures Tarot – The Aquarian Moon is for rebellion, innovation, social activity, and technology updates. It’s also your best time to get logical. The Abstract Futures Tarot matches the far-out energy of this lunation. An absence of humans creates a funky backdrop for groovy future-tripping.

Pisces: Guardian Angel Messages Tarot – A Pisces Moon is your cue to get mystical. Spiritual practices, meditation, and silent retreats will soothe your soul. The Guardian Angel Messages Tarot is ideal for connecting with your angelic guides. The pretty artwork will please your senses, too.

New Moon in Sagittarius 2023 – and Tarot Readings for Each Zodiac Sign

The New Moon in Sagittarius 2023 adds a shimmery glow to the winter skies when it shows up on December 12th at 6:32 PM ET. It brings much-needed positivity as the year begins to wind down. Hope returns, the bigger picture is visible, and the urge to roam is palpable. This New Moon wants you to expand your outlook and yourself. Where do you want to go? How do you wish to grow? What risks will be required? It’s your cosmic nudge to take the leap of faith and see where it takes you.

Truth and freedom are the main themes for this lunation. Because the New Moon favors fresh starts, it might be an excellent day to ask yourself: Am I really living my authentic life? Or have I been caged in by other people’s expectations? Liberate yourself from those constraints and take the first step to live your life in a way that represents the real you.

Sagittarius is represented by the mythical centaur, half human, half horse, with a bow and arrow. Perhaps it’s time to shoot for the Moon on this day? Set new goals, especially those that feel like a stretch. For example, maybe you want to see the world. Or perhaps you want to pursue a new career. Whatever your mission, don’t play small. After all, Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the largest planet in the galaxy. This is reason enough to aim high and trust you’ll hit your mark.

The next day, Mercury stations retrograde, a three-week journey of introspection. You’ll have plenty of time to fine-tune the goals you set today. By the time January 1st rolls around, the retrograde will end, giving you the green light to go as far as you want. Nothing can hold you back.
