Nom / surnom Laurence Desjardins

Tu as commencé à quel âge ? 19 ans

Name/ nickname : Jessi Preston/JP/Stax

Where do you live ? I live between Brooklyn, NY & Montreal, QC

Describe yourself in only one sentence : I am a tattoo artist, part owner of Two Horses in Montreal, and a sneaky devil all over your face.

Why do you have tattoos ? I started getting tattoos because I was curious about the transformative nature of actually getting one. I continue to get tattoos because it’s fun and I learn something new from every artist that tattoos me.

What is your interest in tattoos ? I have a great respect for the history and traditions of tattooing. When I started out I was mystified by the secrecy and excited by the opportunity to acquire knowledge that wasn’t readily available like everything else online these days. There was just so much that I didn’t know about the vocabulary of tattoos that I wanted to understand better. As a creative, I have a great appreciation for any craftsman that is pursuing their trade day in day out trying to achieve the best quality work they can. Tattooing just happens to be my trade and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I literally learn something new every day.

What or who is your inspiration ? There is inspiration everywhere. I love any and all reference books I can get my hands on, particularly old folk, circus/freak, nature, bird, victorian gems I can find. Old labels, vintage design, mid century furniture, japanese clothing design, you name it! I am super detail oriented, so anything with exaggerated proportions or clever use of matter gets me pumped. Of course all of the old school traditional tattoo artists from the US to Denmark are a huge inspiration for the work that I do. They shaped the trade and the iconography used today and it still holds fast. Traditional tattoos will always look good on the body, nuff said. I also love all kinds of music and find it super visual. I am currently working on a Nirvana flash set that I’m really excited about. When it comes to tattooing, I pour over instagram whenever I have down time. There’s so many talented tattoo artists out there that I love to look at!

When it comes down to each piece I do, unless someone is getting flash that I have pre-drawn, my clients inspire the design process. Their ideas are what I put on them so when it comes to inspiration that’s an unending gold mine of inspiration. I am lucky that I have great clients with really good taste! Thanks guys!!

Tell me more about your tattoos ? There’s no need for a story in a tattoo. If you have one, great! But I’m all about putting stuff you like on you. Plus, I’m a collector, so I generally get what the artist is into doing.

Rodin is an occitan multitask artist from Marseille. Rodin has been singing in a polyphonic band since he was 11 years old. He has been touring around the world. He writes and composes music, draws birds and clothes, shoots videos and writes poetry. He has got a complex vision of tattoo, but a great way to describe his mind and the relatioship between himself and his tattoos : he has tattoos to hide himself in beauty … Very romantic!

During the time I spent with Rodin, I’ve learned a lot about the notion of protection that tattoos might have. Tattoos help him to become himself. He feels protected by the mere fact that these drawings will hide and protect himself from the eyes of curious people. Rodin feels close to humble and straightforward people who don’t lie to themselves or the others.

Name/ nickname Keke

Where do you live ? Strasbourg

Your job? salesman textil

Describe yourself in only one sentence : Who likes the life and wants to live his dreams

Why do you have tattoos ? I do not know, I was always close to the musical universe where almost members are tattooed, that certainly directed me to this choice!

What is your interest in tattoos ? I like the fact of concerning the work of an artist me. I find that the human body is the best museum to expose creations, even if I do not necessarily try to show them, I imagine that I like also having badly, but the result is so worth it…

What or who is your artistic inspiration ? The music. (Deftones, poison the well, archives, the ghost inside)

What is the story of your tattoos (numbers, place, … ) ? I have a cuff on the right hand, not still finished, or will be almost all the musical instruments which count for me, in a very graphic style. All the proximales phalanxes or is written “coil” and ” hate “, I felt the need to make me tattoo that, I think that it is because I like myself so much that I hate a heart opened by half on the right hand, not that I am open-handed, the sentence of the tattoo is ” neither of artichoke, nor stone “. A star on the triceps, one on the trunk or is written ” time master keys(passes) by purpose my wounds remain “, a small under the left téton “the beginning” (tattoo in common with my darling), and one on the calf, the title of my album prefers of Terror ” keepers of the faith “. I am not covered yet a lot, but my tattoos is for me the best of the therapies, to look in eyes at my enjoyments and at my punishments, that’s right which I need…

When did you start ? I made my first tattoo at the age of 18, the star on the arm.

What was the reaction of your friends and family ? Given that I have an older brother who was already tattooed, that rather took place well, my parents were made a reason, and my close relations have for the greater part nothing against.

Your next tattoo ? Mhm it is a good question! At once if possible! It is always a problem of money in the final, but I hope I can be again tattooed by Androgynette during are fellow man guest to kofi in Strasbourg.

What would be your definition of the tattoo ? A therapy, a way of exteriorizing all that we have in us..

When you will be an old man/ old woman ? by making me tattoo I know pertinently that I would age with, it raises me no problem, I am ready to assume them all the life.

Your favorite picture ? Artist ? Given that the music is all my life, I am going to give an artist or rather a group: Comeback kid!

Your favorite restaurant ? It is more a snack bar sandwich that a resto, but I ever ate nothing of such, ” Made in France ” in Strasbourg, tourists, go there blindly!

The perfect song ? For me, a perfect song is a song which will know how to do me shudders, it has to be melancholic I would say ” The end of the year era ” about Hopesfall

What entertains you right now ? At the moment I absolutely need to reform a music group to make really something, I play the drum kit, then if you like the melodic hardcore, call up I!;)

Name/ nickname Agathe

Where do you live? Brussels

What’s your occupation? I study interior architecture and built environment.

Can you describe yourself in just one sentence? Oh I think the cat got my tongue!

Why did you get tattoos? I started to alter my skin to mark a particular life landmark. And then it grew on me, the pain and the happiness you feel when you see your skin decorated.

What do you like about tattoos? I like tattoos because they’re a way to claim your body as your own. To enhance and beautify certain body parts. The harmony of the designs and their placement are crucial. You also have to trust your tattoo artist and think about getting a one of a kind design you’ll keep for a lifetime.

What/who inspires you artistically speaking? I love flora, the delicate intricacy of it. I like minimalist designs too, simple and symbolic pieces.

Who are your tattoo artists? Caroline Karénine, Capitaine plum’, Greg (Briko Tattoo, Lille)

Can you tell us the stories behind your tattoos (number, placements…)? The first one was really small. It’s on my inner arm next to my armpit. It was just a symbol, like a talisman I could carry around with me. Soon after that, I was craving a nice big piece that would cover a lot of skin on the ribs, like jewellery. Something I’d like to see everyday and would look good over the years. The latest one is this small crown above my elbow. This one has a special meaning, it’s a tribute to an artist I like a lot.

How old were you when you got your first tattoo? I was 19.

How did your friends and family react? When I first told them about my plan, they seemed a bit concerned yet interested. When they saw the finished piece, they realised I knew what I was doing and eventually liked it.

When are you getting the next one? I’m going to get on with my life for a while. I’ll probably think of really meaningful designs along the way.

Give us your own definition of the word tattoo: It’s an art work with – or without – symbolic significance. It’s part of the body, it sticks with you no matter what and tells stories about you to others. To me, tattoos are a private matter, something very personal. Yet you still have to deal with how others perceive you. Sometimes you want to show off, you pull up you sleeve, sometimes you just don’t. That makes you different in the eyes of others. It’s a really interesting thing about tattooing.

And what about when you get old? I don’t think about it now.

Who’s your favourite artist/what’s your favourite piece? Yves Klein and Basquiat. Lately, I’ve had a super crush on the Hell’O Monsters collective.

What’s your favourite place to eat? Chana at Parvis de Saint Gilles. It’s a lovely place and the falafels are to die for.

To you, what’s the perfect song? Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division.

What excites you right now? Discovering, getting inspired, creating.

Nom / surnom Agathe

Où habites-tu ? Bruxelles

Tu as commencé à quel âge ?

Ton peintre, artiste, oeuvre favorite ?

»love will tear us appart » joy division

Corpus tattooing is an approach where the entire body becomes a cohesive canvas for interconnected and meaningful designs. Rather than treating individual tattoos as separate works of art, corpus tattooing focuses on integrating each piece into a unified whole. The idea behind corpus tattoos is to create a flowing narrative or visual concept that spans the body, turning it into a living, breathing masterpiece. This style of tattooing often requires long-term planning and collaboration between the tattoo artist and the individual. The placement, size, and style of each tattoo are carefully considered to ensure that they work together harmoniously.

Symmetry, Flow, and Storytelling

In corpus tattooing, symmetry and flow play a crucial role. The human body has natural lines and contours that can be highlighted or enhanced through tattoo design. For example, the spine, ribs, and shoulders are often used as central points around which designs are built. The goal is to ensure that the tattoos interact with the body’s natural movements and shapes, creating a dynamic visual effect. Additionally, storytelling is central to this style. The body tells a story through its tattoos, whether it’s a spiritual journey, a representation of life experiences, or an exploration of identity. Each tattoo contributes layers of meaning and symbolism to the broader narrative.

The Process and Commitment

Creating a corpus tattoo requires a significant commitment, both in terms of time and trust in the tattoo artist. The process often involves multiple sessions over the course of months or even years. The artist must have a deep understanding of the client’s vision and the ability to translate that vision into a cohesive design. Because the body is treated as a single canvas, consistency in style and technique is essential. Many who pursue corpus tattoos work with the same artist throughout the process to maintain this consistency, ensuring that every element is seamlessly integrated.

Symbolism and Artistic Diversity

Corpus tattoos are not just about the visual impact; they also hold profound symbolic meaning. The concept of the body as a canvas symbolizes the connection between mind, body, and spirit. In many traditions, tattooing is seen as a rite of passage, marking significant moments in a person’s life. In terms of styles, corpus tattooing is incredibly diverse, ranging from minimalist, black and gray designs to vibrant, colorful compositions. Popular themes include geometric patterns, organic forms, mythological creatures, and spiritual symbols. This approach allows for a wide range of artistic expression, all woven together to reflect the individual’s identity and personal evolution.
