Microsoft: 88 Million Copies of Vista Shipped

Despite frequent reports of Windows Vista being a failure, Microsoft Corporation has now shipped 88 million copies of its latest operating system, almost double the number of copies of XP in the same amount of time at its launch. CFO Chris Liddell credited strong sales in emerging markets, due in part to anti-piracy and legalization programs there. Microsoft had previously said that it had shipped 20 million copies of Vista in its first month, 40 million copies of Vista in the first 100 days, and 60 million in late July.

Three-quarters of the copies sold of Vista were Home Premium editions. The 88 million figure mostly includes Vista-installed PCs bought by consumers and small businesses, as well as packaged copies of Vista sold in stores or online. It does exclude the tens of millions of Windows corporate volume licenses. There, many enterprises continue to hold off on deploying Vista, acknowledged CFO Chris Liddell, though he expects them to start deploying it when Vista Service Pack 1 arrives in the first quarter of next year. Nevertheless, revenue from companies renewing their volume licenses for Windows, which gives them the right to upgrade to Vista, was up 27%.

Apple Refuses Cash For iPhones

Apple Computer inc. has introduced a new policy according to which it will not accept cash when buying an iPhone.Apple also limits the sale of iPhone as 2 per person.

The new policy started Thursday, said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. Before then, there was no cash restriction and the purchase limit was five per person.

One needs to use a credit or debit card to buy an iphone.the initiative was taken to prevent unauthorised resellers.

Gmail Gets IMAPGmail Gets IMAP

It appears that Google is working on integrating IMAP into Gmail. Download Squad reader eD! Thomas sent in a tip letting us know he came across the new IMAP setting while snooping around Gmail. However, it is only appearing in select few Gmail and Google Apps for domains accounts at the moment.

When we checked Gmail Help database this evening, Gmail had said that they support POP, but not IMAP. Then a few minutes later, that doc was gone, and a stack of IMAP related help docs were up. The new pages explain how to integrate the new mail feature. It's as easy as setting up POP, but with huge benefits.

Device driver updates causing Vista to deactivate

duh! another vista problem.any minor changes to vista's drivers or hardware change such as swapping video card cause vista to deactivate.
your copy of Windows will stop working with very little notice (three days) and your PC will go into "reduced functionality" mode.
to get it again working,you need to reapply to microsoft for a new activation code.

Apple Profits Surge Due To The iPhone and new iPods

Apple Computer inc. has reported a profit surge of a whopping 67% in three months until the end of september,thanks to its new iPod lineup and popular iPhone.
Apple said it had sold 1.12 million iphones and shipped 10.2 million ipods.

Windows vista may not have been Microsoft's most successful operating system as the former expected it to be but vista's interface , the "Aero",looks pretty.the main focus of this tutorial is to make the default gnome ubuntu desktop look a close as possible to that of windows vista.this tutorial is completely newbie oriented one to bring the so called "wow" to gnome-ubuntu desktop.
Heres what you can get

Basic elements of vista desktop

1)Icons
download the this icon set .
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Theme.drag and drop the file onto the window.then select the option “apply new theme”.

2)Cursor
Windows vista uses a white aero cursor.download this file.
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Theme.drag and drop the downloaded file onto the window.
select “keep current”
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Mouse.select “Aero”.

3)Font
Windows vista uses Segoe UI font.download it from here.
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Font
press "details" and select "go to font folder"
drag and drop the font file onto the folder.
now close font preferences window and reopen it.
select segoe font for window title, document font and desktop font.

4)gtk theme
download this theme.
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Theme
drag and drop the file and select "apply new theme"
rightclick on the bottom panel and delete it.now right click on top panel choose add to panel and add "window list" and "main menu".delete the menu bar on the left. now rightclick on panel select properties and choose size 30 pixels.drag the top panel to the bottom.arrange the panel items as below:

5)login screen
download this login screen.
Go to Menu->System->Administration->login window
press the "local" tab and drag and drop the file downloaded.
select "vista" theme.
click on background colour and in colour box key in "#54E27D"

6)Desktop Effects
Vista actually has only a few desktop effects."Compiz Fusion", the open source compositing manager when installed will give you many other effects other than the vista ones.for example look at this video.
and not forget it also runs fine under my spare 3 year old computer with 256mb of RAM!!!
to install it on ubuntu fiesty(7.04) visit forlong's blog.
do not forget to install "emerald" and "emerald-themes" packages
Go to Menu->System->Preferences->Compiz configuration
select plugin "effects" and click on it and select open/close animation as "zoom" and under "effect settings" tab under zoom,select "zoom from center".
also select "shift switcher" plugin and click on it and select "flip" mode.select "window preview" plugin as well.

Update: latest version of ubuntu, i.e. gusty(7.10) has compiz installed by default.

7)Window Border
Vista has a blurred transparent window border.since we have already installed emerald,download this theme and double click it to install.

8)Sidebar
install screenlets application.download this skin.

9)splash screen
type this in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install gnome-splashscreen-manager

then press alt+f2 and

gnome-splashscreen-manager

and get a matching splash screen in gnome-look

finally get some vista wallpapers here.

The popular open source cross platform browser "FireFox" in its third version is set to get a visual makeover.
FireFox is available for Windows,Mac OsX and different Linux distros.The FireFox team decided to create different skins for firefox in different operating systems.
The Mozilla interface designer, Alex Faaborg posted in his blog “personally I think a unified cross platform UI results in applications that at best feel foreign everywhere, and at worst don’t even feel like real applications.”

The latest version of the popular linux distribution is set to be released on the 18th of this month.It is codenamed "gusty gibbon" and version number is 7.10.
it brings many new features like
1) Compiz out of the box...this rocks so hard!

3)Fast user switching allows you to easily switch between multiple user sessions without the hustle of entering the username and password.

Google increases Gmail storage

The popular search gaint Google increased the storage on its popular email service,GMail.
As of October 23th, users will get 4321MB of storage, and from January 4th next year, will see 6283MB of storage.
After that users will receive 3.3MB every day, which is apparently 10 times larger than the current rate of growth.

Yahoo and Microsoft have recently increased the online storage they offer, so it appears as if Google, once the market leader in the area, has moved to catch up.
